  • All-new for 2023 BMW's entry-level SUV, the BMW X1, has entered a new generation featuring new looks, a more luxurious interior and even better tech! This specific vehicle is a BMW X1 xDrive 28i and was the only X1 model available until BMW just announced the X1 M35i. But there is no need to care about performance driving if BMW can't nail the basics of what a luxurious subcompact SUV needs to deliver.
    Clocking in at $54,485.00 CAD here in Canada and powered by a 241 horsepower 2.0L Turbo I4 the BMW X1 seems to be in-line with it's main German competitors: The Mercedes-Benz GLA and Audi Q3. But with our recent somewhat mixed experiences with the latest Mercedes models, BMW might have the chance to capitalize. Today we're taking this BMW X1 for an in-depth test by looking at it's exterior, interior, the new iDrive 8 infotainment and then taking it out on the road for a mix out of comfort and performance driving! Does the X1 reign supreme? Find out in today's review!

    I drive an X1 with 18” wheels, lumbar adjustment, sports seats, adaptive cruise, heads up display, X-line edition; $45K. Very agile, quick, and roomy. Seats comfortable. Easy entry and exit. Excellent 36mpg on highway at 75 mph. Best unusual feature: car remembers how to back out of garage automatically by following how you drive in. Drawbacks? 1) User manual does not cover infotainment and most electronic adjustments- result is driver must deal with the in-auto instructions, a complicated obscure maze of cryptic instruction. 2) Even with 18” wheels ride notices bumps, and on a washboard feels like a massage unit 3) Driver has to become educated in using the throttle to avoid annoying lags or sudden jerks at stops. 4) Built-in nav system is too awkward- driver will end up using Car Play or Waze.

      I’ve owned several BMWs and I always vow that the next time I buy one I’ll order it with springs and shock absorbers instead of having the wheel carriers bolted directly to the chassis.😂
      Seriously, I always thought the ride was just a part of the BMW experience until we got a 530e. Even with the Performance option low profile summer grippy tires it rides surprisingly well. Maybe it’s just a function of the sheer mass of a plug-in hybrid. I looked up the weight which is 2 metric tons or 150 pounds more than a 1957 Chrysler 300! With the 530e you still know the bumps are there, but they aren’t jarring, it feels like the car is just steamrollering them flat as it goes over them.
      We have a new X2 on order which comes with 19” wheels as the base. I guess I’ll find out how that rides, but I’m not expecting a creamy ride.

    I have this exact car. A couple of things i did.
    1. Create a shortcut in the UI for 'Deactivate Once' for the start/stop.. do this first!! When i start my car, every time i swipe down and tap this to stop the auto stop-start. The auto stop-start needs an option to permanently switch it off, it's intrusive and I think, could be dangerous in some situations.
    2. Make sure hi beam assist is turned on, if not... if you put high beams on manually, the assist mode is turned off, which means you will blind oncoming traffic and get road rage.
    Overall, the car is terrific, very comfortable, a small/midsize proper SUV without the nonesense. BUT... BMW need to bring back some analogue controls, such as seat heating and so forth.
    The problem with touch screens is that to reach the touch screen when you are driving, you may need to lean your body very slightly, the act of leaning towards the screen means your hand / fingers will have much reduced fidelity in movement accuracy.
    I have written to BMW and advised them that the iDrive 8 ignores 'Fitts Law', when the body is in motion or the torso needs to lean, movement accuracy is significantly compromised.

    I agree with your description of steering wheel as “twitchy” I like the thickness but almost over reactive. Also I can’t stand going through the far to reach touch screen to adjust climate controls. But it was a fun and peppy ride. Thanks for the quality review. Regarding the touch screen and abandonment of physical buttons, especially for climate. Isn't the voice activitation available? In past models, driver could change drive modes and climate with "hello bmw...".

    • @GCCarsCA
      @GCCarsCA  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you kindly! Voice controls are a thing, but I think they're utterly pointless. Not only do these systems often struggle to hear properly, but to go through the whole spiel takes 5+ seconds if it works. Adjusting the temperature myself with physical buttons takes about 2 seconds and I don't have to ask people in the car to be quiet for a second. Sorry, I feel strongly about this, ha!

    • @Lincoln7Zulu
      @Lincoln7Zulu 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @GCCarsCA good to know. I was hoping the voice controls were going to compensate for the lack of buttons. It's the main reason I just don't get the X1 tomorrow. The price gap between the X3 and X1 almost seems worth it. But the X1 is a better size. Such a bummer to see that touch screen handle climate.

    I bought a 2024 x1 last week with pretty well every package available on it. It drives fantastically well, feels luxiuous, has a lot of space and overall as a vehicle is very good. It also has incredible fuel milage.
    However, the software (iDrive 9) REALLY needs some work. I've had several issues with it so far (takes a long time to boot, phone audio is broken, assisted driving has disabled itself, android auto drops). There's also things that were available in iDrive 8 (and 8.5) that have now gone in iD9 (the post below about adding a shortcut to disable start/stop - yeah can't do that in ID9).

    • @GCCarsCA
      @GCCarsCA  หลายเดือนก่อน

      We haven't used iDrive 9 yet, but what you described certainly doesn't sound great. Is there a way for you to "flash" the infotainment and install iDrive 8.5 on it?

    • @dnorth98
      @dnorth98 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GCCarsCA negative. The iDrive 8 systems were Linux based whereas the iDrive 9 systems are android based. The good part is you can install android apps via the connected drive store. The bad part is it needs some work...

      Unfortunately it seems like BMW hasn't shared that data. A quick web search didn't yield any results, and even other publications such as Car And Driver don't have those measurements for the X1.

    For the most part the X1 has great features and very peppy but I drive long distances and the seat is very uncomfortable for me… cuts off circulation in my leg…my right foot almost falls asleep after driving about an hour. ..thankful for cruise control but disappointed that the material of the seat is harder than expected for a “luxury brand”

    Specd out Xline is around $37-38Κ USD plus taxes and fees but all we care about is leasing.
    Now leasing is same as Q5 premium plus. Which one would you buy?

    • @GCCarsCA
      @GCCarsCA  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have not experience with the Q5 as Audi is notoriously difficult to get a press vehicle from. That being said, while the Q5 is quite a bit older than the X1 you will enjoy a good amount of extra room. So if you're planning on seating 4 - 5 people or loading up the trunk regularly I would go for the Q5.

      We just recently tested the refreshed Cadillac XT4 and were quite surprised by how good it is, slotting in just below the X1 in our personal small luxury SUV rankings. Your father might prefer it over the X1 as the XT4 is a little softer and more relaxed than the BMW while still offering a genuinely nice experience.

    People are starting to wisen up to the X1 after the whole "iT's NoT a BmW, iT's A mInI cOoPeR" noise wore off. Got my F48 four years ago and felt it was a really strong value, despite Redditors telling me it was a piece of shit and I would do better to get a Mazda (lul). Never once have a regretted the car and am now waiting on dealerships to get the M35i in so I can test drive it. The xDrive variants very rarely show their hand as being FWD biased, the quality of the interior feels nice, and my parents even preferred the backseats of my F48 over the X5 M50i we had in Washington as a rental. Furthermore, the B48 has just been solid after 70k miles and constant throttle abuse. I'm hoping the M35i sufficiently delivers on feeling sportier because I'd be happy to get into another X1. That all said, the X3 M40i or even the X3MC do have my eye, but I am tempered by the fact that a complete refresh is imminent and I do have an itch for a new car (retail therapy, ya know?).

    • @GCCarsCA
      @GCCarsCA  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The X1 is certainly a step well above the Mazdas. And I say that as someone who really likes what Mazda offers. I think this new generation of the X1 is a home run and we can't wait to test more BMWs soon, maybe even the M35i!
      Hope your test drive will be fun!
