  • The third generation of BMW's most compact SUV represents a giant leap from the very first iteration of this car which debuted nearly 15 years ago. The offering is now closer to what you might experience in one of BMWs other X cars, the X3 and X5.
We sent our video guy Ciro De Siena to find out if the new offering is worth the sticker price of just over R750,000.

I like that comment about auto journos, its quite true. In the UK and India especially, if a car cant do 0-60mph in less than 5 seconds is garbage. Doesnt matter if its a family hatchback or a Type R, it must be a beast! However alot of people dont know the fine print that alot of them are former racecar drivers and they take their perspective as gospel truth.

    • @thatomokoena5098

I agree. These auto journos have destroyed cars for me and most people who aren't aware.
Now we have Volvos with stiff suspensions that can handle themselves on track, nobody buys a X90 or Hilux because it can attack an apex. Now it's less comfortable and the steering offers more deedback than we need on our roadtrip mom's school run

      The difference is.
      1. Fuel consumption- chinese motors not nearly as efficient as BMW motors. 20d offerings can do 4.7l/100km while the H6 averages 8.5l/100km on highways.
      2. Parts.
Had a friends wife break down with a 6month old H6, had to wait 4 weeks for replacement parts.
Had a coworker who got in an accident with a small Haval, same story no parts and had to be placed on a waiting list for Radiators ect.
BMW have plants in SA so parts are available all over.
      3. Resale value
German Marques have much better resale value as the demand is higher…as you say, people still willing to pay for the badge.
      4. Service and aftersales.
Try breaking down in colesburg/Kathu with a Haval and see how long it takes them to get there if at all…BMW has a much wider dealer network so in case of emergency or service requirements its much more convenient as branches and support are nationwide.
Pros and cons to both, don’t just look at Retail price.

@@DECA94 Noted! I have owned 3 BMWs so far and yet, still - the difference in price for the "entry level/intermediate level" Chinese offerings vs German brands is offset by the difference in price.

@mzwandile makhowane yes the Chinese have made leaps compared to their offerings 5 years ago. However Jump over from the BMW, or any established german brand for that matter to the chinese offerings and you immediately feel why the premium is asked. Its just a superior product.
Like Ciro said, you can just tell its been made by people who have been making cars for over a 100 years.

Bought a 118i pre-owned, for R239k, 4 years later, sold it to we buy cars, got 200k. My Yaris I bought brand new for 183k, after 6 years, and 60k mileage, they gave me 100k.

Had 4 BMWs none of them gave a days problems. All of them driven over 100k km.
Had an X4 for 3 years sold it for 30k less than i bought it for.
Traded to an X5, on 100k km now not a single problem
Will probably trade it on another BMW in the future
Buy from reputable dealers, check service history and maintain it on schedule, and its as reliable as any brand out there.

Driven many BMWs for thousands of miles with no problems. It’s Land Rovers and Jags you need to watch out for.
