Why I Chose Sony For Video

- I've been analyzing all cameras brands for video, testing them out for vlogging or at home youtube videos. They all have major faults, some are good at autofocus but terrible for stabilization, others have both of those but are heavy and weird. Let's talk about why I think Sony is the overall best for video, now and into the future. We'll be testing the Sony A7III with Laowa 15mm f2.

wow the first thing I noticed about the immediate changeover to the Panny G9 was the IBIS being alot smoother.
I think it looks way better, even with the warping. The jittering of the Sony makes it even more nauseating for me.

@@omeharto288 But Sony's IBIS doesn't warp with UWA. The active stabilization from the A7Siii get rid of all the jitter. Hopefully we will get active stab in the lower-end camera sometime soon.
Yep, that's why I still have my gh5. And an a7r3 lol. But those MFT cameras are just so smooth hand held. I went FF when the a7r3 came out and I really have no plans on selling my gh5 unless a gh6 comes out with amazing auto focus phase detect. Then maybe. But we all know that ain't happening.
A7III has the worst IBIS in the game. Panasonic stabilizes the middle of the frame nice, but the corners get very distracting for a full vlog. A7S III solves all these issues.

Yes the Sony felt much bumpier
The Tamron 17-28mm has had a recent firmware, make sure you install it. For the AF in 120p, choosing zone AF and putting the zone in the middle helps. HLG doesn't come with the AF penalty, and is almost as good via a LUT and doesn't need the workaround for color.

The g9 warpy is more distracting than the slight shake of the Sony, in my opinion. Either way a7siii is better than both of these

@@Matchstiix nah I disagree to be honest. It's more stable, but the warpy corners makes me focus away from the centre of the screen, if rather a natural bit of shake

I switched back to the G80 for vlogging manual focus is 100% reliable lol slight 4k crop is slightly annoying but it's still an amazing camera years later.

It took 4 weeks and several phone calls to fight to get them. Perhaps you should check with your distribution, she wasn't very happy with the process and they were 2 weeks late for my birthday 😜.
Panny stage was so much better. Can't wait for A7S III to actually compete. You were right to wait, A7 III is a sad specimen aside from dynamic range and mostly AF.

I'm thinking of buying a Sony FDR-AX700 Camcorder.
Is there a reason that you don't consider camcorders for your vlogs? Is it the lens choice?
Tiny sensors, no wide lenses, cheap image.
It's common for the AF to loos you in S-Log. If you use another picture profile the AF is far more reliable. Cool video as usual!
I totally get the stabe critique here. I can't handhold video with this thing to save my life. BUT I firmly believe, this camera was made for stills photography, and at the time they released it, most video makers were using gimbals. For photography SteadyShotInside works perfectly fine. When you test the 70-180mm, you'll appreciate it very much. Yes, you will. Don't argue. It'll be the best thing you've experienced in your life. Your WHOLE life.

I really love my A7iii but when I use the G85 I realize how much more polished the UI is which makes for a more enjoyable user experience especially when using it all day. A7iii with a Panasonic menu or S5 with Sony autofocus would be perfect.

I am not a vlogger and there are many things that I don't know about this, don't kill me if this sounds stupid, but I am wondering about those back mirrors that are used on the cameras that don't have a flip screen. I tried and it was really hard to use for framing and impossible with manual focus. Is there a reason for not using a smartphone mounted on the hot-shoe or an articulating arm as a monitor using camera's app?

@@colonelangus8247 What about entry level? The average family who just wants a real camera for occasional use don't want to spend that much money. Sony needs a much cheaper camera to compete with the now aging Canon M50. That camera still sells so well it was the number 1 mirrorless best-seller on Amazon today when I looked to see what was selling.
Far more people buy entry-level cameras than pro cameras.
@@DanPandrea the price sucks but it's just slightly more than the 6600 and would be about what you would expect for the 6800 if it ever happened. That's why there probably won't be a new apsc body.
@@cooloox I just picked up a open box 6000 with kit lenses for $500 to help out a beginner, for most purposes that's just fine and it's not a uncommon deal. Its the photographer that takes the picture not the camera.

If you install Playmemories Home, it will detect an SD card and you can import your files painlessly - they will be sorted by date in your import folder.

I have the a73 it’s awesome your right about the slow mo it’s useful but a pain also the file system to get your pics is tedious nice vid bro
You're right about 2 things (not only):
- a larger mount means that lenses will be heavier and "thicker", just because of the added mass at the rear.
- E-mount has a huge lens selection advantage because it's an open mount, so third party can design lenses that will work just as reliably as Sony lenses, and it means you have a variety of focal ranges and prices, there's a Sigma 14-24mm for example for $1399 (which you should try), yes it's expensive, but if you look at Nikon, they have an equivalent lens for $1000 extra.

Your comment on the extra reach on APS-C with Sony. There is a function in the full frame Sony cameras to punch into APS-C, you should definitely bind that to one of the buttons, I personally put it on the 'trash' button during recording.
Here is a tip for better stab, with any camera including the Sony A7III;
Put it on an actual tripod (travel size works best) and hold it from the center pole above the legs. You'll get much better stab. than holding the camera or using a small 'vlog' tripod.
What about using a taut camera strap handheld?

The cropped 7.5mm fisheye with the digital stabilization crop looks better than the rectilinear lens.

I HATE the warping on Panasonics, so I’d definitely take the Sony. As an aspiring filmmaker, a gimbal is a must anyway so this whole ibis thing isn’t a topic. Plus it’s not like the G9 is completely gimbal smooth. That joint has shake too.
Has anyone tried the Fuji 8-16mm for vlogging? I imagine it's hotel warps-alot and that $1500 on sale price is prohibitive, but wondering what it would look like? Not sure if the 4.3 equivalent toneys are enough but the width is there. Weight would def require the monkey strength program though!

So there is a work around for the Sony files for easier access but kinda a long process to get the files in to a single folder.
It works for both Mac and PC I think. You need to select all the files from the memory card with the video files, drag and drop them into a folder named delete or trash I believe it’s called and bam there you go you can view them all in one folder. 😁

Still, having to click 30 different things just to get the video out is ridiculous! Is the a7s the same way? So you do like The 17-28 Tamron? I think that's gonna be my next lens. I keep going back to it. Anything else I should look at for a wide angle on a budget?

Terrible stabilization on the Sony. Giving me headaches! My Olympus EM1 Mark III is much better (using IS-1 setting)

Has autofocus been improved? Dpreview said it had trouble tracking fast subjects.
@@professionalpotato4764 Oooh, there are some big problems with that review. 1. They bizarrely didn't use face detect, one of it's strongest features. Use that for tracking running bearded men. 2. For C-AF on Olympus, you use multipoint 5x5 or 9x9 like a DSLR for focusing on anything without a human face. DPR used TR, which is only good for recomposing within the frame.
Casey has the real run-down on the strengths and pitfalls of Olympus video. AF is not one of them.
@@romainprovost7164 You dont need his update example, just watch CC's Olympus video, then you head will simply ache due to the Sony. Also, he CC compared G9 to Oly. Here is comparison between Sony and G9. To me, less shake is the better route, so if the Oly won over the G9, i would say Oly is the winner. Thank me later.

You don’t know what the C-line has in mind for RF Mount in the future. Perhaps the CXXX will have a humongous C4K sensor that utilize the entire mount ^_^ I’m so curious as to what their RF C-plans actually are.
I think the warpy stuff is more indicative of a vlog than something thats supposed to be more cinematic and more professional

don't know what it is, maybe me, but the stabilization on this video was horrible. Almost got "sea sick" watching the background bounce around. Love your videos and your sense of humor.
I was lucky enough to get a sony A7s3 on the morning of the US release... And, I will have a FreeFly Astro to fly it.
I love the image my Fuji XT3 produces, but you really need to practice and play with the AF settings. I just got a ZV1 for a Livestream with basically no camera operator and it is far superior for anything that uses auto. That IMO is where Sony is killing it. Exposure doesn't step, AF is rock solid, lots of options for exposing for face, product showcase, etc.. a7siii might be the ultimate, but will wait until the price inevitably drops.
Still willing to buy an m43 GH6 if they implement PDAF.

@@Thegbiggamerz It's the reverse though. Mft primes cost like 1.2k for a 85mm f/2.4 equivalent. You get a cheap 85 f/1.4 for only 500
@Foto4Max I'm looking at the 24mm f1.4 GM lens that's $1900 meanwhile the "leica" panny 12mm f1.4 is $1700 or used much closer to $1300. Yes the ff sony offering is better no doubt about that. I'm okay with losing ~2stops saving $ & a bit of weight.

Also ibis and weather sealing are quite good to have plus flippy screen and dual SD card I found sorts helpful. BUT that FF glory is insane I hope lenses drop in price it'll make me consider getting a first gen a7 body and a couple of primes untill I can upgrade to the a7V or something
@@Thegbiggamerz That is true. I'm very tempted to buy m43 (g9 or em1-3) cos of the ibis and weather sealing. I'm personally ok with f/2.8 ff dof so I don't mind using Sigma 16mm and 56mm I think. But some people want to shoot faster. The full frame look is also super attractive. I wish I can earn money faster :)

it's easy to custom WB, check video "How to create your own custom white balance color filters on Sony Cameras
" WB +1 red +1 pink (=-1 green) you get canon color. You can custom with K degree WB, custom WB (by gray card), auto WB to shirt +1 red +1 pink (-1 green).
R5 has squirrel eye autofocus. If you had got a CFexpress card and shot 4k 120p you would have discovered that.
The monkey strength program seems to be helping with the a7iii’s stabilization. Definitely the best footage I’ve seen handheld!
