The riot shots are from an actual riot that occurred when the Star Hotel was closed. The song was written by Don Walker after seeing news reports of what happened. The Star Hotel was due to be shut and demolished and on its last night apparently some sections of the crowd attending didn't like the idea that the hotel was closing at the normal time and wanted it to stay open until all the alcohol was drunk. Things escalated from there. Cold Chisel have always been my favourite Australian Band since I first saw them in the 70's. Great sons, and great live performances.
It wasn’t the crowd reaction like that. What happened was the cops came in and told the band to unplug and finish, then punched the lead singer in the face…. That is what started the unrest and then when the cops put the crowd offside by doing that is when it started to get rough . If they’d just let the band finish as planned and then called last drinks it wouldn’t have happened. Blame the cops for what took place….

All started before the band was turned off. It was that crowded on the street that the Newcastle workers club set up a stand selling beer on the footpath across the road from the star. This caused the crowd to cover king street. An old bloke drove through the crowd telling them to get out the road and someone banged their hand on his boot. He got scared and called the cops
"Star Hotel" (1980) captures the mood and events of September 19, 1979, when, in the working-class steel-town of Newcastle, police came to close down the city's main pub-rock venue, The Star Hotel. The police found themselves confronted by an angry crowd spoiling for a fight. Police cars were overturned and set alight in the course of a civil disturbance that echoed convict rebellions of two centuries earlier. The hotel was finally closed down, but the punters had made their point - and Chisel weren't going to let the police forget it. Peace out.

I live about 10 minutes walk to where the Star Hotel used to be, and I know people who were there when it happened.
And now you have CHEAP WINE to go - a beautiful melodic number in a similar vein to Flame trees and Forever now.
It evokes a nostalgic story thats bitter sweet in it's chord changes, like flame trees

Wow! This is really a song I have been dreaming of you reacting to for ages. As others have posted, the song was inspired by news reports about a riot that happened the night they closed down the Star Hotel (a working person's pub/bar). But the vocals are ridiculous, as you said. There are a bunch of songs from the same album that also highlight Jimmy's clean, very high voice, including Standing On the Outside and Tomorrow. If you want a ballad, Four Walls also fits the bill.

You got it right Nic, whilst there are some great bands from down under, there have not been any like Chisel. Their musicianship, their great diversity. Their soul and blues rock sound is fire. And now I hear the reggae mixed in to their sound because of your reaction. There may be people who don’t appreciate Jimmy, but he has so so many more people like me who think he’s the bees knees. He will always be my number 1.
I was seeing these bands at their best in my twenties for $10,, in a pub.great times that sadly we will never see again.

The Star Hotel in Newcastle is making a comeback. Its been re-opened for a couple of years now and my best mate is the Publican. Different vibe than what it used to be from it's dark old days when the riot happened. Getting some live music back in there too now. Worth dropping in for a beer, music and some great food. He's hoping to get Jimmy to make a guest appearance one day.

An uncontrolled crowd went crazy …. Don’s songwriting always taps into the Australian psyche and the feelings of that particular moment.

I went to TAFE with the owner of the Star Hotel in the '90's and more recently, played music trivia there. I am also friends with two people who were there on the night of the riot. - but the riot was before I ever moved to Newy.
This song is written about a pub in my home town Newcastle.

You have to listen to "Four Walls" beautiful ballad about being locked up, ends all arguments if Jimmy sings, Brilliant. try the albums "East" Circus Animal" and swingshift to mention a few, (in that order)

About Newcastle’s Star Hotel ( now closed down ) Star Hotel was getting rough and rowdy backing the late 70s early 80s police closed it down one night then a riot broke out .
Cold Chisel was nowhere near Newcastle at that time , Chisel’s main songwriter keyboardist Don Walker was influenced by the event .
Another legendary Australian band Australian Crawl was performing a gig that night in Newcastle not that far from The Star Hotel they was told to leave Newcastle before their gig was finished apparently .
The Star is still going, at least it was last time i was there a year or so ago though it was shut for a long time. I used to know the bass player from Heroes, the band that played the night of the riots, lovely guy

a local band call heroes was playing on the night of the riot . it was the last night that the hotel was to trade. the police entered the building and grabbed the mic and closed the pub early. that was what cause the start of the trouble. the band heroes later released a song called The star and the slaughter.

my Mum always said Jimmy just shouts!, had to reply!, well, least he made me feel happy!, when he shouts!.
It was filmed in my home town of Newcastle, NSW, Australia. My cousin was there, I was too young. The hotel never got demolished, it was always changing hands and trying to rebrand itself. It was a great place to go to, the last time I went there was in 1998. I don't go out anymore.

My uncle lived with us then.
He snuck in late one night with a brick under his arm.
He had been to bloody newcastle to the last night of the Star, and drove back to sydney ( he was from the central coast so).
It was cool i was a kid n knew exactly what this song was about when i heard.
Best Aussie band ever imo.

Developers were knocking down a very popular hotel in Newcastle to build units and people went off after the last night of trading at the Star Hotel

What amazes me is Jimmy is now up their in age and can still belt out that range like no time has passed. Compare Axl Rose who is a little younger and not been actively singing for as long.. his vocal range just isn’t there anymore and he’s about to embark on a world tour ...

As an Australian boy, Cold Chisel is in my veins. In some way they are a band in touch with the Aussie heart and soul. They're all great musicians, made better by combining talents, and the result is a unique rock band with diverse influences. I think the reggae stuff comes from the drummer Steve. His style has been called "Australian Reggae".

Man you need to get the album 'Swing Shift.' This live song is off it and it in many ways is an early 'best of Cold Chisel' performed live. It's a double album and if you play enough times you will be another Cold Chisel devotee! Thanks for sharing!

I stayed at the Star Hotel back in my teens - they had drag queens changing the bed linen. Bit of an eyeopener for my at the that time sheltered self. Awesome place.
That's why so many people get sooooo frustrated with other people who keep insisting that Jimmy can't and could never sing he just screams. And then say that Bon Scott is a great singer and Brian Johnson which I agree. But they can't see the hypocrisy in what they are saying.😠 Great reaction. Love Cold Chisel, love Jimmy ❤️

I was at The Star on the night of the riots. The mood there was great until the police got involved.
When the cop punched the singer in the face and said unplug was the turning point I believe….
I was not in that particular bar at the time, I saw the cops go in and then all hell broke loose. I went home a few minutes after that.
Interesting you picked up on the reggae beats: there was a bit of that in the late 70s early 80s when Bob Marley was on the go. Jimmy Barnes voice is great too.

I used to walk past the Star Hotel on my way to work every day. It's a little embarrassing how long it took me to connect this song and the burnt-out building.

There was another Australian band that were pretty iconic too, still going to this day.. You may have heard of AC/DC lol.. Only kidding.. Chisel are definitely Australia's most iconic Australian sounding band.. AC/DC kinda went commercial.. Chisel just did Chisel..
