    Nice tie Davie. I like the tips with cutting the waste chenille and the black varnish.

    As usual, I tried tying this after watching the video. I have to say getting the tips of the feathers to line up would try the patience of a saint! You make it look so easy though. Amazing skills Davie

    Oh Davie that's a lovely trip down memory lane, and it's one of the few I haven't re - tied. I will have to put that right.

    A golden oldie Davie, I remember tying this one 30 odd years ago. A favourite for rainbows, I got the tying from from Dave Collier’s book.

    Absolutely beautifully tied Davie! I love the double tinsel, not only is it a looker, I imagine it is a sturdy fly as well. I’ve seen you do this on some of your salmon fly patterns and began using this method myself even on the simple bugger patterns, and it definitely elevated the pattern. Just another great tool to add to our boxes, you’re pretty good at giving us plenty to choose from.

    As a young lad I also found that it is best to use the lid to get the black varnish. Fun to see you use the same method!

    Hard to figure out why we do things, back in the 80s I use to fish a lot of different Matuka style flies and for some reason stopped using them . A few years ago I was digging through my fly boxes and found a whole box of these and used them and guess what they still work . I don’t have any ace of spades though so think I will tie some of these up today just because it’s -2 here in Montana and the fishing sucks right now . Thanks for the video

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Nikolay,
      I've never iced fished though I have fished through the winter both on the river and when I used to manage a trout fishery many years ago..Most beaded nymph patterns worked as well as your standard nymphs Ijust had to get them down to the fish or fish very close to the bank and especially the mouth of the burns ..I'm glad you liked the fly..
      All the very best Davie

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Iain,
      I've fished it for sea trout many years ago which was in the summer months though It's mainly fished in the lochs as both brown trout and rainbows will take this fly I've even had pike on it..I'm glad you liked it..
      All the very best Davie..

    I have a question about the vanish, my vanish dries out much quicker than yours, don't have so much time to work with it. Is there any tricks to slow it down? Love your work you're my fly tying Guru 🙏 thanks for your videos much appreciated Chris

    • @tylerpaquette9376
      @tylerpaquette9376 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Chris I don’t have a lot of experience with varnish but maybe a touch of some thinner may solve your issue hope this helped ya

    • @etamaman
      @etamaman ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I second what Tyler said. I use to steal a touch of my wife’s acetone. You can also add more to thin for more penetration into thread or materials or midge patterns.
      Tight lines!!👍🏻

    Davie, about your scissors, how do you sharpen them since you cut tinsel and wire with.

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sera Tang,
      I get around 6 months to a year out off a pair of scissors before I need to replace them as I have tried to sharpen them but never as good as they were..I only cut the tinsels with a pair that is on it's way out as I'll not do this with a new pair..I do need to invest in a good sharpener but they are not cheap though with the pairs I have went through over the years I could have bought one..Marry Christmas..
      All the very best Davie..
