    Nice fly. Bet that floats like a helium balloon with the snowshoe hare fur.

    Beautiful variation of Fran Better's Ausable Wulff pattern. These flies float like corks here in the turbulent waters of the Adirondacks. Well done Davie!

    Well Done Davie. Very nice fly! Perfect for riffles and a good dry dropper fly!

    This is the first time I’ve seen snowshoe rabbit used on a Wulff style dry. Even if it’s a bit more unruly than calftail, it certainly looks good & will stand up the the roughest water you can find. Definitely worth tying. Thank you.

    Nobody ties with such a cleanness and sense of proportion as Davie. One would like to fish all his patterns just for the sake of it.

    I inevitably end up fishing a 10/12 Royal Wulff if things are very slow on the lake - with a silver back buzzer attached 18” off the hook ‘tail’ - and nine times out of ten- catch trout on one or t’other! That’s a lovely pattern you’ve tied Davie. I will tie and try some in the Spring when the Seasons open again. Thanks

    Sweet , l went through a period of tying where I used Snowshoe rabbit where ever I could . Drys and emerges Were the main flys but never thought to do a Wolff pattern . Like you I don’t fish them that much but with the Snowshoe rabbit I bet it would float like a cork . Thanks for the video

    Snowshoe certainly lasts longer than deer hair. I'm also using squirrel for the tail on Wulffs. I find it helps to split the tail to increase surface tension floatability. Rather than waste the snowshoe underfur (there's a lot of it) I drop it into my dubbing 'bran tub' along with other waste. That bran tub provides an amazingly usable melange of dubbing for all sorts of flies. Tiny flecks of ice dub in the mix add subtle attraction on many patterns.

    I also skip doing the double posted Wulff style wing on this style of fly. Snowshoe hare seems like it would be an improvement over calf body hair…which, in my opinion, is a pain to tie and doesn’t float as well as snowshoe.

    It’s a little pain but I like snowshoe as an under wing on a lot of patterns with a deer hair wing.

    Thanks Davie. Great video. I live in New England and like to use materials that I personally harvest. I have many snowshoe hare feet. I also have red squirrel skins that could provide dubbing. What do you think of gray squirrel tail for the tail of this fly? Would they be stiff enough to support it on the surface? It’d be pretty neat to tie a variant with all those.

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi C Naj,
      I was going to use the grey squirrel as it makes a great tail until I found the piece of badger as I thought it was a bit closer to the woodchuck so I would definitely recommend the squirrel for the tail..I'm glad you enjoyed the video..

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Herwig Van Hellemont,
      It would be a good fly to fish in the fast water. This style of fly is fished a lot in America and will represent a few flies though it can also take a fish or two when things are quiet..I have fished them in the lochs when large mayfly are hatching as well as caddis especially in a good wave where they work really well..I'm glad you like it..
      All the very best Davie..

    Awesome material switch on an awesome Betters take on the awesome Wulff pattern. Fran B. must be smiling now, looks just like he would have have tied it, nice and "buggy"! Beautiful SS foot and you even split it. Great hackle too, Badger tail looks great. I have everything but that Cree, which I'll probably never get, or that dyed burnt orange squirrel dub. Did you dye that Davie? It looks like it came from Betters' own dye bath. Thank's for the inspiration Davie, I'll be tying some SS wing Wulffs.

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Joe,
      Red fox squirrel dubbing dyed fiery brown or a hot orange though you have to use a lot of dye to get the darker colour. If you buy the SLF Squirrel dub you can mix their finery brown with their hot orange and this will give you that nice colour..I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for the kind words..
      All the very best Davie
