    July in Pennsylvania, the end of the dance for great trout fishing. We either head to the small streams to catch small fish or some of we sinners go bass fishing. Killer fly for smallies. Thanks for another great one Davie.

    Davie I hope people see this again and again. First it is a good pattern, much. Like the Woolly Bugger, it should be in everyone's fly box. With minimal effort it can be weighted, you can change color combinations, it can be adjusted endlessly and be very useful. Such a good pattern. I would like to see it with purple Jungle Cock Eyes as well! Thanks for the reminder!!

    Thank you for giving me an excuse to use my massive bag of Guinea fowl feathers I just got from local farmer's dead Guinea fowl. Was in a bit of a mess because I cannot afford to buy the materials for salmon flies and was struggling to find trout flies that used it!

    Hi stephen welham,
    No this is not my version of the ace of spades but it has been the way that I have always known it to be tyed, it's a very popular pattern and can vary anywhere it's fished...
    All the very best Davie

    Hi Davie I think my all time favorite fly to tie and to fish is the Matuka. In fact some of my pass words at work have Matuka in them. I was excited to see the Ace of Spades. I haven't seen this one before. Great job of tying! It just looked fishy. :)

    Davie, finally got my hands on the LAWS. Really makes a difference. I've got hands like the honey monster but now I can get right into a size sixteen. Thanks for giving me the address.

    very nice fly, but tricky to tie. I am getting better thread control and my bodies are looking much better. I am having a time with maintaining the space for the head and making it look nice. I suppose it will come with practice. I am also taking a class but I am learning more from you. I really surprised my instructor with the wooly bugger I tied last week. I told him I was watching you. I hope he tunes in. Thanks Sean

    The matuka is a very effective streamer with the brown trouts, overcoat in black, brown colors...
    Good fly.

    Great fly tying as usual Davie. Could you let me know which is the specific hook you used? Thanks for all your tips and advice over the years.

      Hi @123troutie,
      It looks like I used a Kamasan B175 size 10 though a Kamasan B830 classic streamer is also a very good hook for this pattern too...I'm glad you enjoy the videos..

    Davie, have you ever heard of a fly called the Glister Ollie or the Glister Oilie? ... I heard it's a cracking early season fly in lakes here in Ireland.

    I haven't seen such elegant tying since Poul Jorgensen.
    Even chenille doesn't get Dave McPhail down.
    I hated tying Montana Nymphs and Woolly Buggers by the gross.
    Thank God for peacock herl and Dave McPhail.

    I think I am becoming quite opinionated as of late, I liked it better without the bronze mallard. Do I really have to tie it on? There is a time when we just have to go with what we like too, right? I don't have any business going off on my own now, but I still have an opinion and that is it. ;) All the best, Sean

    Well davie, any chance you could do a video on how to tie a matuka badger, very hard fly to get these days and not many videos on how to tie one either

    davie, you're techniques are flawless and a joy to watch, thanks for sharing. Are you self taught, what got you started?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi ferrousoxidedog,
      I would say that I'm mostly self taught though we do pick up and get inspired by other tiers especially as I have been tying for over 30 years..I do tye a lot of flies so I practice working with materials to find other methods and techniques which I like to pass on and as well hopefully come up with a new fly..I'm glad you enjoy watching the videos...

    Very nice fly, what conditions would you fish this fly?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Chip Kraft,
      I would always fish the Ace of Spades mostly at the beginning of the season on a sinking line when it was really cold and when there was very little happening, it was also worth using on my local water amongst the rocks of a large dam where there was a lot of fry about...It's a good all-round lure and I'm sure it would easy hold it's head high amongst any modern lure...
      All the very best Davie

    Hi Dave i have been tying for a few years and noticed that you break off your waste instead of cutting is there a reason for this.

    This is a nice small streamer. It is a streamer, isn't it?
    For what kind of fish you need this? Can I use it for perch or small pike?
    With compliments.

    What black substitute could i use for the body please Davie?
    Dewi

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dewi,
      I've used black wool, seals fur, ostrich herl and rabbit instead of the chenille on this fly over the years and I'm sure you could use other materials and it will still work fine as it's a great fly...

    • @DavieMcPhail

      Hiconnor wade,
      I like to use a dubbing mix of black seals fur or SLF and some flash which works just as well...
