    Montreal, QC, Canada - 2011: Had a freind tie 8 (6/0 hook) of these, except for Northern Pike and Muskie, with a 1/2" trailing treble and black Marabou tied atop like the white. White Marabou was extended 1/4" past the treble bend. I had none left and replaced the flyline twice, what a fabulous day. It was stupid but the best feeling ever to have two 3-5 lbs. Smallmouth Bass, a 13 in. Pike, a 17 in. Pike, and a 3 ft. Muskie take off like a bullet on a cheap Canadian Tire flyrod kit, so much fun.

    One of the things that make your videos so valuable is the explanation of •how• the materials are best used. Here I learned THREE new techniques on marabou alone! Thank you Davie for sharing your knowledge. Cheers from British Columbia.

    I live in western Canada and in the 80's as a youngster trying to get a hold of flytying I picked up a book by Bob Church. The jacket had a cover of Bob in a cardigan and a tweed deer stalkers cap. Nobody!!! dressed like that where I was, he was very strange looking.I poured over that book and the flies were even stranger. Pink boobies, white streamers, hulks. We were fishing life-similar leeches, dragonflies and chironomids. everything from green to brown!! Slowly over the decades many patterns in that book began to be used around here. Boobies and their mechanical twins microleeches in particular. He was ahead of his time.

    Another repeat viewing for me. You are first and foremost a great teacher. You took the opportunity to take a simple pattern and use the tying of it to teach some fine points.
    You have made it a lot easier for people to make it through a very tough year with your videos.
    Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
    I wish you and yours all you wish for yourselves and more.

    Been fishing this lure since the seventies on UK lakes and reservoirs but in lots of different colours black orange and white being the most popular. Black with a bright green butt known as the green arsehole being excellent when the summer daphnia is around.

    Davie, what's great about our hobby is that there's always something new to learn. It never occurred to me to roll feather hackles to mix them, I've always mixed the hackles by putting them in a small stacker and whack away at my wife's dining room table. Please weigh in publicly: does head cement penetrate the thread when the thread is waxed either by the manufacturer or the tier? My Tie-Flying club is split on this issue. Thanks again for a great tye!

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Bill,
      I have varnished thousands of heads over waxed threads and never had any problems with my flies or from anyone I've tyed for have ever complained about the varnish coming away due to this..Though I do make sure that I don't over do it with the wax as once or twice through wax is enough and I also remove any excess by running my fingers along the thread before I tye with it.. With salmon flies especially I also coat the heads with superglue first which dries within a few minutes then I varnish the head a couple of times to finish off which gives me a lovely finish..I use Veniards Prepared Fly Tyers Wax and nothing else...
      All the very best Davie..

    Very nice Davie! QUESTION: Just curious, why is this fly called a "lure"? I associate the word "lure" with plugs and spoons used in spinning and bait casting, I would have described it as an "streamer/attractor" fly. Beautifully tied and thank you for the detailed commentary. ATB! Hank

    • @DavieMcPhail

      Hi Hank,
      It's just a term used for these type of flies here in the UK as they are tyed on a lure hook, it's also representing a small fish rather than a fly so If I had called it a fly here in the UK I'm sure someone would have said to me this is a lure and not a fly. I have been asked this question many times over the years as in some countries this would not be called a lure and more liking to be call a fly pattern as you said..I'm glad you liked it and I'm sure if you give one a go it will catch you a few fish...

      @@DavieMcPhail Thanks for the reply Davie! Small fish (minnows and fish fry) are the preferred forage of the species that I fish for so I am as serious about imitating them as I am caddisflies and mayflies. Cheers! Hank

    Дэйв здравствуйте , покажите самые уловистые мушки. Спасибо.

    • @AlexK-vy3tt
      @AlexK-vy3tt 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Уловистость мушки зависит от многих факторов: где, когда и какую рыбу ловить. На сухую хариусовую мушку крайне трудно поймать, скажем, щуку. Хотя в принципе и возможно: летом на севере щука может подбирать насекомых с поверхности воды. Но редко.
      На мушку, представленную в этом видео, клюет практически любой хищник в озерах и реках центральной России. Если повезет с погодой и правильной подачей - то клевать будет как из пулемета.
