GSC my first Pokémon games, they'll always have a special place in my heart. I remember asking my mom for both Pokémon Gold & Crystal and a Gameboy Color back then and the only way i could get it was if i got good grades at school. Coming back home that day and looking at three square boxes in my living room and one of them being a Kiwi Green Gameboy Color really made me jump out of happiness. Spent the entire evening playing the hell out of Crystal Version and man the improvements they did in these games were amazing for the time, moving Pokémon sprites "In Crystal only", a day & night cycle, traveling between Jotho and Kanto, ect. This was the pinnacle of my childhood and these games are what helped me make friends back then "which most of them are still friends with me to this day"
It's certainly the one I've got the most nostalgia for, but in retrospect Gen 2 was sadly quite flawed. The level curve is atrocious, a lot of the cool new Pokemon are locked behind Kanto where they are so low level it's a grind to use them for what little is left, the daily events were a cool idea as a kid but just annoying as an adult and roaming Legendaries have never been fun. That said, as someone who's been around since Gen 1, I still feel Gen 2 is the overall biggest improvement any single generation made to the series. Gen 1 truly feels like a rough prototype in comparison. Having two regions and ending with a match against your own prior in game avatar, representing younger generations surpassing their elders in a way only a video game truly could, would've been a fantastic finale if the series had ended here as originally planned. Only way I could see the game series bowing out on such a high mark now is to pull in Ash for the grand finale now that he's been retired from the series as the best that ever was.
I never understood the hate for baby pokemon, or useless uncompetitve pokemon in general. Like, they are the replacement for animals in this world, why wouldn’t there be pokemon that aren’t capable of serious battling? It’s a world building tool built directly into the mechanics of the game. I, for one, think that’s very cool.
27:28 for those that feel like its wrong for falkner to have a level 9 second stage pokemon that shouldn't be available, that same one could be caught in veridian forest in yellow. Violet city is close to new bark town, which is a short surf away from kanto, where gate takes you to league or veridian. So getting a level 9 pidgeoto is feasible for falkner
When the active box is full you still have to change the box in order to catch Pokémon. Billl calls you and tells you when your box is full. From Ruby & Sapphire onwards you don't have to change the box.
I had Gold months earlier than all my friends as my dad got it from the states. I remember having a crowd around me at break time in the playground! Also Onyx can hold stuff in his mouth
When I was a kid I got both silver and gold for Christmas and a link cable, so obviously I picked Cindaquill, then traded Totodile over, I loved both of those little guys, I heard there was in fact a grass starter but I’ve never seen one. But yeah if I HAD to pick between the two, I’d probably still pick Cyndaquil just because I tend towards the fire type starters.
As of the lv 9 Pidgeotto, that's an exact encounter in Viridian forest in pokemon yellow. And well, yes I'd eat pokemon no question if they're the equivalent of irl meat providing the same nutrients.
You forgot to mention how hilariously buggy some of the new poke balls are in these games. For anyone that doesn't know, go see how the Moon and Fast balls actually work in game 😂 Great retrospective 👏
I hate that I missed out on the painful Whitney experience. Like it was the normal gym and dude in town will trade you a Machop, seemed simple enough. Like I played the game and missed out on one of the biggest shared experiences in the entire series.
While Gorochu would be cool, Raichu has always been my favorite and an evolution would just make the underappreciated older brother to the series mascot even more disrespected
Instead of buffing the Pikachu evolutionary family by giving a final evolution, they nerfed it by giving it a baby form, making Raichu the final form...
Hi, i found out about your channel not a long time ago and really enjoy it, specially your pokémon retrospective videos, hopefully you'll cover the next generations as well. I think it would be really cool if you made let's play series playing them. Also, chikorita is awesome and my top pick for gen 2 and that footage of her being prepared for a meal is going to give me nightmares. Keep up the good work and thank you.
Speaking of shiny odds, I've played every generation except 8 and didn't see my first non scripted shiny until Legends Arceus. If we're excluding that as they seem more common there, wasn't till Violet I encountered my first wild shiny, a Murkrow who looked amazing as a purple Honchcrow. That's also counting the dozens of rom hacks I've played and replayed over the years
The thing about eating Pokemon is, in Gen 1, it was implied that there are non-Pokemon animals in the world, just like there is vegetation. Countries like Guyana (Mew) and China (Arcanine) exist, which is weird to think about. Lt. Surge fought in "the war". There were generic fish in the anime, though James thinks Magikarp are delicious. I suppose they wanted to tidy up the lore and world-building by Gen 2 and the humans of the Pokemon world had to eat something, so SLOWPOKETAIL and RAGECANDYBAR were introduced.
You should actually check numbers and trainers, some of them are the only way to get thunder stones, leaf stones, and water stones before you get into kanto Plus the rematch trainers are good due to the limited exp and money in game, it is annoying to deal with all the excess call though
20 years ago TV was lame but nice times nobody was black over-representation. Peopled were based on demographics rather than races....... Oh and we could DREAM of owning a 1 bedroom apartment without a kitchen, unlike now
This is the generation I'm the least familiar with, since my parents got caught up in the "Satanic Panic" around this time. Still was able to play Crystal much later, and I have a copy of Heart Gold I bought at release. Fun games though!
Worse sequel. The level curve is very poorly adjusted (especially in Kanto, where almost all Kanto leaders are at the same level) and half-empty Kanto doesn't make up for how small Johto is (and the lack of dungeons compared to original Kanto).

Seeing red was the pinnacle of mine..it was god like
Fantastic Retrospective, I loved your narration style and pacing. You got me through a 5 hour car ride!!
Don't listen to the podcast episodes then, I may make your ears bleed
The greatest generation
hmmmmmmmmmm i dont know if i can agree.....ahh dont hate me

The anime premiered in Japan in 1997. The games came out in 1999.
So even the kids in Japan didn’t know who Ho-Oh was when they saw it.
Really....well this is why I should research..
Gotta love seeing a fresh vid about my favorite region and generation.
I hope it is a good enough video
I’m just now realizing that for no reason at all, Khangaskhan doesn’t have a pre-evolution even though it’s carrying one in it’s pouch. Very wierd.
There is a lot of problems when it comes to the breeding process of that thing

because I want Gorachu!!!

all lies....falsehoods......but actually correct
When the active box is full you still have to change the box in order to catch Pokémon. Billl calls you and tells you when your box is full. From Ruby & Sapphire onwards you don't have to change the box.
If I see Bill, I am gonna slap him
I love the leep from redblueyellow to goldsilvercrystal and totodile is the only starter right behind Charmander
woah woah.....he goes before
@RetroWarsuk na charmander was my dude my elite 4 team on yellow was Pikachu Nidoking and Charizard
I grew up with red and blue and still believe Black and White(and their sequels,) were the best in the series.
Black and white will get an episode on the podcast.......one day....god knows when that will be
I had Gold months earlier than all my friends as my dad got it from the states. I remember having a crowd around me at break time in the playground! Also Onyx can hold stuff in his mouth
Yeh my cousin was like that....i hated him for it hahahah
TheSmithPlays released Crystal Legacy in December and he and his team nailed updating the gym leaders' teams
I need to have a look at that...the amount of rom hacks I have played is silly
@@RetroWarsuk definitely check it out. He also just released Yellow Legacy
Will: Girafarig, Alakazam, Jynx, Slowking, Xatu
Koga: Nidoking, Venomoth, Ariados, Crobat, Muk
Bruno: Hitmontop, Poliwrath, Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, Steelix
Karen: Umbreon, Houndoom, Murkrow, Sneasel, Tyranitar
Lance: Aerodactyl, Charizard, Lapras, Gyarados, Rhydon, Dragonite

My thoughts on the rat have improved over the years for sure

Great retrospective 👏
I actually didn't know about any of that as I never ever used them
@@RetroWarsuk they're honestly so funny. Cheers for a great vid
I hate that I missed out on the painful Whitney experience. Like it was the normal gym and dude in town will trade you a Machop, seemed simple enough. Like I played the game and missed out on one of the biggest shared experiences in the entire series.
That was the stuff of nightmares
While Gorochu would be cool, Raichu has always been my favorite and an evolution would just make the underappreciated older brother to the series mascot even more disrespected
Yeh Raichu is my favourite too but GOROCHU!!!!!!
Instead of buffing the Pikachu evolutionary family by giving a final evolution, they nerfed it by giving it a baby form, making Raichu the final form...
Slowpoke tail soup😂😂😂😂😂😂
See that sounds yummy

Thanks for the message. Not sure when I will go back to Pokemon. I haven't covered ruby and saphire get on the show, so it could be a while as of yet

my first one was......a wild red gyarados....not that one. Next was a caterpie :{

I wanna eat a milktank
@@RetroWarsuk Good luck catching one with its 100 base speed. Thing's as fast as a Salamence, Starraptor, Zapdos, Entei, ect.
Crystal was my first gen. Asked to get a Gameboy color even when the GBA was available
I wish I still had a Gameboy colour
@@RetroWarsuk haha same. Mine is long lost 😭
To be fair I saw one at someone's house and thought how small is the screen
I love this gen as it was the first game I ever played.
I hope I didn't ruin it
April 2024:
I subscribe to this channel before it blew up! Less than 1k subs as I write this!
Thank you, I am just happy making videos and podcasts which make people laugh
Just started a gen 2 play thru for the first time in over a decade so this video was wrll timed for me 😊
As long as I didn't ruin it...or you picked chikorita
@@RetroWarsuk I did 😂😂😂
40:33 give flakner hoothoot and murkrow. And maybe give whitney a stantler
oooo I like the Stantler idea
I didn't expect these to be ad-libbed. That's impressive.
Too lazy to do a proper script
That Fera sprite is from Gen 3
Damn....................
Nice video. From your new vegan subscriber who picked Chikorita as my starter 😂 all the jokes on me this time
Welcome to the club. Call it by its proper name 😁
At least it’s not STAB 😂
33:46
God the STAB....I forgot to mention that
You should actually check numbers and trainers, some of them are the only way to get thunder stones, leaf stones, and water stones before you get into kanto

I would rather watch the world burn then speak to people on the phone
Jasmine need skarmory steeling and scizor shoe off steel team
Yeh Skarmory would have been a good one to have in there for sure
I miss the shitorita series
Yeh I do too. Stupid shadow bans
Why does this footage looks so laggy? Is your emulator skipping frames? This is just terrible to watch
I think it is the celebi footage. It is mostly from the entei video so it should be ok
Not liking or subscribing for the Chikorita persecution.

Mate I'm just happy I have a bed at night
B why is there not a system for me to donate. I want to keep you going bro but at the same time I can't select something to help you
You don't have to give me 100 bucks lol. I do have a patreon for the podcast. Come over and be a part of the community
Second draft of the script, cover some of your pronunciations and maybe a bit less angry about things, but yeah sure, good vid so far.
What's a script?
I'm sensing that you don't like chikorita 🤔🤔🤔
Never.....I love the thing, like a pet
This is the generation I'm the least familiar with, since my parents got caught up in the "Satanic Panic" around this time. Still was able to play Crystal much later, and I have a copy of Heart Gold I bought at release. Fun games though!
I made a point of the satanic panic in the red blue yellow video. My mum and dad didn't care thankfully
Play crystal...unless you want mareep. Then gold/silver instead
Ahh Mareep, he just felt like such a let down
Worse sequel. The level curve is very poorly adjusted (especially in Kanto, where almost all Kanto leaders are at the same level) and half-empty Kanto doesn't make up for how small Johto is (and the lack of dungeons compared to original Kanto).
Yeh the level curve is a bit of a mess. The worst sequel though? Nah, they could have just done Johto and we would have been happy
