You're a life saver. We just bought a hundred and twenty year old house that has the same trim. But they took it out of the bedrooms to put plastic thin trim.
Just subscribed. You make this seem effortless. Love it! Thanks for the info on the nail guns. What brand of paint and what tone of white do you use for the trim? I'm at that point now where I need to paint and I don't want for instance a white that has a gray tone to it. Looking pretty much for pure white or something close. TIA
I’m in the process of building a new house and refuse to pay a fortune for all the upgrades. I opted for the “basic” on the windows because I knew I could do this. Thanks for the clear instructions! I’m feeling a lot more confident!
Ditto. Bought a spec home 2 years ago that had the layout and basics of what I wanted. Now I'm ready to tackle the upgrades that were out of my price range.
Haha I understand! I did one like this several years ago in a remodeled kitchen with no plans to do any others and that’s the window that started everything. After that, I ended up redoing all the ones in that house 🙈 it’s almost an addiction haha
I just thinks that type of millwork around windows and doors makes it look so high end. Drives me crazy going into a expensive house and not see this type of trim work. It looks great!! Thanks for the video showing how to do it!
Easily my favourite DIY channel. Simple designs that look so classy. A very difficult mix to get. Been acquiring tools for two years, garage renovated last year in readiness (gotta start somewhere so a paintbrush seemed a good way!). Now to build cabinets. I'll be good at boxes by 2023. Thank you for your clear steps and I love you explain everything. Including the "why" and sometimes the inevitable mistakes we all make. So often these are omitted or simply overlooked from the viewers perspective. Cracking job and thanks for the inspiration over the last month to actually get on sketchup and start playing with some ideas. Garage first so I'll learn there where it doesn't matter then work on an entertainment centre (which I took a lot of inspiration from the one you did for your Mum. (Mom!) Not even gonna apologise for the essay as people are often quick to criticise but are rarely so forthcoming when the message is purely positive.
Absolutely the best description of this channel! I love that everything looks so professional and beautiful but doesn’t make me feel like I’m way out of my league
You are so kind. This “essay” means so much to me. I truly appreciate your kind words and am so glad to hear you find the videos and ideas helpful and inspiring. That’s awesome you have a newly renovated garage you can work in! I think you’ll be good at boxes well before 2023 😂 give yourself some credit. You got this! 🙌🙌
I’ve been wanting to add trim to my windows for so long and a leaky roof gave me a test window. Came across your video and loved the look and simple design. 4 windows done and absolutely love it! Thank you so much for sharing ❤
I had always looked at trim like this and wondered how difficult and expensive it would be to do. Thanks to you Shara, I not only have my answers, but I have realized that they are simple enough that I feel like I could do this in my house and make all my windows and doors “Fancy”! (Oh you Fancy!!”). As usual, you can always be counted on for good ideas which are very workable and easy to follow along with you, and this is why you are one of my absolute favorite TH-cam channels and creators.
Thank you for such a clear video. My new place could use some trimmed windows and this makes it plausible for me. Thanks for noting the gauge of the nails, this is often not mentioned and it was important to know the difference.
I’ve watched about 50 window trim videos and yours is the BEST!!! I love the additional trim too. Thanks for sharing this! Wonderful job! You also helped me to decide to redo the door trim in my master bedroom. Thanks!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Shara, you look really good in your new shop. Great job on your trim with excellent explainations. Now your giving me some ideas on how I can make my shop look a little bit better. Thanks for Sharing!
I'm renovating my house now. I'm using your design for the windows and door trim. Thank you so mush for sharing!!!! I love this design. I noticed you used a step latter to work up high. I know you must use saw horse also, but thought I would share the one's I use and love them anytime I have to do something up higher on the wall or ceiling. Klondike "KTL" model 140-02 all aluminum. Only costs $100 each for the 2 foot high one's.
Wow! I also replaced all the trim in my builder grade home with new door and window trim and baseboard. And I made the same door/window as you did. Great results. 👍😃 And cutting those little, tiny, half-round returns is fun, isn’t it! I’m going to enjoy this series.
Awesome! Isn’t it crazy the difference a little trim can add to a space?? 😍 also I cringe every time I cut those little half round end caps 😂 they usually go flying and I have to go find them 🙈
This was absolutely perfect! Thank you so much! I'm building a tiny house from scratch and now just getting to Windows and Doors inside. Very hard to find such clear cut information on this process

Looks great! Your new shop is really going to be nice! I like your step-by-step explanation of each and every project! The use of common 1x’s adds a bit of a rustic, yet modern look that’s very, very nice! Priming the wood sure does help with the final finish. Looks great! Have a nice weekend Shara!

Thanks Shara as always, always useful and inspiring videos. Love all. Just put a new door to outside through my utility room. Will finish this way and knowing me I'll be wanting to replace trim throughout. Lol Couldnt do it without you. Always the best, easiest to follow. Thanks so much!
Love that craftsman style look, it's very similar to what I've installed. For those crown miters, a Collins spring clamp or two work well, too, until that glue dries. Just fill the holes like you do for nails, and paint. Love your builds, Shara!

Love the idea Shara, wish I'd thought of it, I have been hand contouring my trim piece by piece as I remodel rooms. Gets tough keeping them looking the same. Especially if there is any length of time between room renovations.

I love how the crown molding really adds extra dimension to the window. I am curious as to how much dust (and sawdust) ends up getting captured behind that crawn over the course of a year. Do you ever check/clean the empty area behind the crown?
I’ve only had this in my shop for a week and haven’t made much sawdust in there yet since then. But I’ve had these for years in my other houses and I guess dust gets stuck up there, but it doesn’t like “fill up” or anything. I painted the wall two years after installing some around the doors in the hallway of a past home and it wasn’t much up there. A few dead lady bugs and some spider webs 😂 but if it bothered you, a quick vacuum here and there wouldn’t be too difficult.
Hi Shara, Thank you for giving me hope on how to get a great looking trim around doors and windows without the expensive price. Could you please let us do a rough price comparison between store-bought trim or having a pro do it vs doing in ourselves like you did? Thanks and keep up the great work! You are simply inspirational 🙂 Btw, I just activated the bell so I'll be notified for all your future videos.
Thanks so much for following along! I’m not sure how cost compares. To be honest the store bought trim kits are the exact trim I’ve been going around in my homes replacing for years because I hate them. I have no idea their cost as I’ve never been interested in buying them 😅 and also I’ve never had a professional out to look at replacing my trim either because I knew I could do it myself much faster. So I’m not sure how much they’d cost either. But I can imagine it would be hundreds of not thousands to replace all the house trim.
Great video! I'm honestly surprised you haven't made yourself a better insert for your miter saw. It goes a long way to prevent any blowout from the standard insert that has such a large gap.
Thanks! I use a fine finish 100 tooth blade on my miter saw and rarely have issues with tear out on it. When I do, I know it’s time to change the blade ha.

I love your videos and that youuse Ryobi. 😲 I want to buy an auge Ryobi AirStrike 18V ONE+ nailer but there are too many of them and its hard to find some informations. And now I see you have 3 of them. Could you make a video about the difference? 😌
I talk about this a little in the video. The differences are in the size and style of fastener they shoot. The 16 gauge shoots a larger nail. It leaves a bigger hole, but will have a stronger hold. I use it for things that really need to stay put…like the main trim here. The 18 gauge is a little smaller. It’s better for more delicate pieces. The stapler shoots thin, but long staples and it’s good for securing thin materials (like using 1/4” ply, mesh, fabric). They also make a pin nailer (which I don’t have) that shoots very small nails. That’s good for trim, but won’t provide much hold. It’s best for “pinning” pieces in place so you can come back and secure them better with a bigger nail (or glue would work too). I THINK those are the four types of airstrikes they have right now.
Great timing with this video! I'll be trimming out windows and doors in my newly remodeled basement rec room soon. Excellent tutorial on doing this! How do you maintain your Air Strike nailers? Any oiling/maintenance tips? Mine often dry-fires, especially after not using it for several weeks or months even. Thanks!
I’ll be honest, I’ve never done a thing to my airstrikes. I’ve had the 18 gauge for 4-5 years now and use it OFTEN and have done zero maintenance. Every now and then (maybe 1/30 nails?? I’ve never counted haha) it will dry fire, but I just reshoot the nail and move on.
Thank you for sharing this! We have a new build and our builder made the inside of the windows dry wall. Do we have to take the drywall off first or can we skip the step of trimming the inside of windows with new wood?
It depends…if you add the wood on top of the drywall, if it’s still not covering the glass or moving parts and it’s still just on the outside frame, it’s probably fine. But if it covers any of that, you’d need to remove the drywall. Does that make sense?
Do the wood knot holes bleed through the paint? Looking to do something similar and would be really nice to use the wood with a few knots and not pay for the premium boards.
I’ve not had an issue with it to date. I’ve done my door and window trim like this in my home for years and not dealt with bleed through. I don’t know if this is the whole reason, but I attribute it to good primer. I like Kilz 2 or 3.
You're a life saver. We just bought a hundred and twenty year old house that has the same trim. But they took it out of the bedrooms to put plastic thin trim.

Oh my gosh I re read what I sent you and there are so many typos. I was typing fast 🤦🏼♀️🙈 I’m so sorry. I’m going to go back and edit that 😂
@@WoodshopDiaries That's no problem 😅. I always hope that my posts are understandable.
I’ve never counted haha) it will dry fire, but I just reshoot the nail and move on.
you're the best best best!! Thank you so much for this.
The window trim in my 1923 house is very similar to this.
That looks fantastic. Nicely done as always. :)
Thanks so much! I appreciate it!
Shara , thank for video !!!
How nice!!!
Awesome Job
