All this time I wondered how it was done, I tried it and came out beautiful, yes epoxy a light coat before wrapping a thread, I did mettalic blue with a gold trim , thank you!!
Wow John kind of like a handmade winding check. I don't think it would be for me because me and propaste don't get along that good. LOL thanks for the information man appreciate you for sure.
I use Propaste with size D colorfast 353 and I have a difficult time trying to up my ramp as John explained. On my next build I will use plain nylon non ncp.
Really Good video. Well done. If I may I would like to suggest a second step before you begin wrapping thread. If I feel my ramp isn't smooth enough I usually apply a coat of Flex Coat to help soften any divots that may be present. I gotta say, you do some great work. really appreciate your channel.
Hey John, what a faff a ring of 1/4" masking tape saves the mess on the seat then just use epoxy to build up a lovely collar perfect every time and finished without all that uneven collar to worry about, thought you yanks where good.....lol
Do you let the paste set at all before doing this I tried it with fresh mixed propaste and it was way too sticky it all wanted to peel off on the popsicle stick
Yes, it is a tensile wrap and you can watch the video on it here. th-cam.com/video/IE0B6FuZsQk/w-d-xo.html Please let me know if you have any more questions.
You have to work fast. Put in on the dryer. It looks like one of those swirled bowling balls. I put a couple colors in usually. Cover with epoxy when finishing the thread. Evens and smooths things out.
Just few some on a rod last night. Red and black pigment. My brother is a Nebraska Conhusker fan and wants those colors. Should’ve used more black. When I cover in epoxy it will be more black. Fun to play with options.
@@samhennies6493 - Yes Sam, it is fun playing around with them to see the different patterns you, and I’m sure your a looks great. Thank you for watching and commenting.

You’re spreading the epoxy the hard way. Get the base amount on it, then put it on the dryer and go ahead and put a thick glob on it. Use a blow dryer to spread it on the highest setting. It’ll pull all the bubbles and give you a silky smooth finish.

Just came across this video. Really nice technique! Are you using the quick dry paste also do you recommend size D thread. Thanks again John!!
Hey Tom, I’m glad you found it and that you appreciate it as well. Size D for the reel seat ramp? If so, yes I do. Thanks again for watching.
Should I make my Ramps before my decorative wrap ?
I would make the ramps before the threat wrap in a hat area of the rod, yes.
Are you concerned about the finish getting on the reel seat gasket? I’ve been told the finish and silicone from the gaskets don’t do well?
No I am not concerned about it Ched, and thank you for watching and commenting.

No John, you don’t. I just apply the paste and then wet my finger to smooth it out. Hope this helps.
Thanks John, looking forward to doing one of these ramps on 2 builds I have going now.
Awesome and glad to hear it. Thank you for watching and commenting as well. 🙏
Hi can you tell me what the multi colored wrap is made of?

You can eliminate all those peaks and valleys if you mold it w your finger covered in alcohol. Makes for a smooth ramp and shaped the way you like.
Thank you William and I am aware. I’ve used both alcohol and water to smooth them out before. Thank you for watching and commenting.
5 minute gorilla glue epoxy works great with some pigment. Pretty it up with threadmaster later works well, too.
So you mix the pigment in with the gorilla glue? If so, that is an interesting technique. Thank you for watching and commenting.

I prefer 8’6” MHX salmon blanks.
