  • After recently discovering my toilet flush pump was seized solid, the only option was to replace the pump. In this video I replace the flush pump and show its really not that difficult on the C260 Thetford Cassette toilet.

    Great video with clear information and instruction. With my previous caravan my pump had stopped working twice and the first time was a bit of a shock as we had just arrived on site for a weeks holiday. It transpired that the impeller had become stuck and also had blown the fuse. I found a TH-cam video similar to yours and was able to free the impeller successfully. It’s good that people like yourself take the time to film these instructional videos and I will use it if I have a broken pump problem in the future. Thanks again.

    Brilliant video for the C262 model. I had no idea how to gain access to the pump before watching this. The fault I found was a tiny length of string wrapped around the impeller. Once removed we are back in business. Thank you so much.

    Thank you so much, your excellent video, saved me a fair few quid. I was able to carefully peel back the Thetford "Sticker" and only needed to clean and release the impeller to get the pump working again. It all went back together with no issues, I'd not have had a clue without your help.

    Hey Dan. I do like your videos and how you de-mystify caravan issues. Yet another superb video on how to DIY a bog pump repair. I myself dump 2 litres of screen wash into the header tank for the toilet and run it till I get screen wash in the toilet bowl. The screen wash protects down to -20'c and is from Prestone. Keep these coming as I find them highly informative. Well done that man. 👍👍

    • @Ronin6069

      @@jonathanp6538 It's screen wash. Good enough for cars, good enough for a toilet whilst it is in storage. Besides, I would like to think that Whale pumps tend to be of a better quality than the rubbish pumps they put into cars imo. Lots of threads about using screen wash to prevent the freezing of pumps.

    I just fitted a non thetford pump, "Comet" off E Bay under twenty quid. you have to cut off the old connectors and fitt them to the new one. Someone on here made a video of this but I noticed they made the connections below the grommet. In what would be the wet side. I decided to make mine above the grommet. Works fine.

    Another cause of pump failure is adding too much pink to your tank. It causes some kind of algea to grow which starts to choke the pump until it eventually fails. Same happened to me. Better still , don't use pink. Before the caravan I had 3 motorhomes. All 3 toilets fed from the on-board fresh water tank. No problems at all. When I used sterilisation fluid on the fresh water circuit it also cleaned my toilet pipes.

    I agree with your thought Dan that the pump was faulty to start with.To have allowed water to seep into the pump over time to the point of seizing up. Nice easy job but as Martin Caravan Nut says it's easier to change than the C250. The C250 pump is on the outside of the tank to the rear of the toilet. Take care Dan and family. Cheers Rob

    Hi dan , same thing happened to me today, put it a pitch to check it over after the lockdown & the toilet pump is seized solid. I went onto Facebook unicorn 4 page looking for help. One chap on there is very good with advice, this is what advice he was given & has passed it on. .....
    The one time i had mine seize was fully drained as well. I spoke to a Thetford engineer and he recommended to me leaving half litre ALdi style screenwash in over lay up periods. As rubber friendly and contains lubricant for screenwash pump. Enviro safe if not overly friendly, protects down to minus 40 if that cold here i have bigger problems. He explained it as when fully drain you are still in moist atmosphere old flush chemicals can crystalise and damp air helps corrosion form. Leaving it in half litre no air so less risk . I have done this last 8 years and all been good. I just drain into a bottle before towing and can put it back in when i return too storage.

    I changed the pump on our Eccles Topaz last month.
    The genuine Thetford pump for the C250 toilet was nearly £20 more expensive than the pattern part I replaced it with. They both use bog standard 600 size brushed motors which are dirt cheap.
    Simple job that took about 20 minutes.

    Hi Dan, Pumps are designed to push water in one direction and to not let it run back out when turned off. Therefore, in frosty weather, unless you remove pump and drain it water will remain inside and cause the damage you demonstrated. As a car owner I'm sure that in winter you use an anti freeze solution in you windscreen washer bottle. Put a little of this solution in you toilet cistern and activate the pump to primed it and you will have no more burst pump problems.

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, we always run the pump to empty it at the end of the holiday. In Feb the pump was running just as normal, yet in April when i checked the pump was completely seized. in the space of those 2 months, we didn't have any frost or freezing weather.
      So, whilst what you say is 100% correct, it just doesn't ring true with our actions.
      Hope you are well,
      Take care

    Hi, just a quick question. I am looking to venture into caravaning and looking to buy a large (ish) or even a twin axel caravan and I have looking for a vehicle to tow it with. How does the land lie with sites on towing with a van. The van will be only for personal use and unsigned. It would be a advantage for me to have a van over something like a 4x4 but it’s not a deal breaker. Many thanks.

    Do you travel with an empty tank ? Maybe the pump can swing around inside and damage the casing or it was just bad luck .

  • @richardbinnie
    @richardbinnie 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello. When you empty the tank do you drain from the outside taking the rubber stopper from the draining tube. No need to do this when there is no risk of frost but I was once caught out by not fully draining the tank and the small amount of water left in the tank froze splitting the pump exactly as you have shown here. Is it possible this has happened here. Either way a really informative video. Thanks.

    • @TheTrudgians
      @TheTrudgians  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI Richard, on our last day a part of my "i don't want to go home" ritual, is emptying the flush through the rubber hose and running the pump into the cassette. so by the time we are back in storage the flush tank and the pump should be bone dry. So, like i mentioned the only way i can see this pump being this broken is by it failing somehow.
      Take care

Appuljack Engineering did a great job sorting that although its not cheap. Now the caravan is all ready - apart from the bleeding toilet flush again - its had a new pump, new reed switch pcv, countless new fuses - nothing. don't think I'm getting power to it at all. A warranty claim on that pump would likely have been rejected on the grounds of frost damage. Maybe you always drain and empty the flush but not everyone does. The job can be done without removing the foil if you buy a pump on its own.

      Ok, it’s likely you have a blocked pipe. Try taking the pump out and release the attached pipe and either blow some air (tyre pump) up the pipe or drizzle some mild bleach into the pipe. It could be the nozzle is blocked so a thin bit of wire up the nozzle in the bowl could be an idea too.
