My dad has a 50 year old Amazon and he's 70. She used to hate me and even tried to sneak in my crib and kill me, lol, but once I moved away and came back after 6 years she clearly missed me and loved my new children. Which is great because she would be willed to me. There is nothing quite like a bird that lives long enough to witness generations of your family, all the changes, losses, ups and downs. I love Doodle Bird.

It makes me sad for the birds to think about how much they will miss their loved ones when they pass. It must be hard for them to live so long just to have their humans die before they do. 😢 In a perfect world we would all have our fur and feather babies live lives filled with happiness and security for all of their lives.

I’ll definitely take care of him. I always wanted one but I don’t trust any breeders who sells them. I had two sun conures someone gifted me and they passed because they were old. One died 1st then a couple of months the other one. Then I got a Quaker from my mom’s Quaker couple. He still with me and his everything. Talks, laughs and barks😅.
I have 2 dogs and he mimics all their sounds. He’s just a member of out family. We even take showers together and go for walks. I’m 32 years old and feel capable or taking care of this bird. I have 2 kids, one is 16, the other is 12 and at this point I’m not going back for another baby. A bird will be my best bet. Sometimes my kids go out and I stay home alone….”Barbara” could be my companion.
So if you ever feel you don’t know what will happen to him when you’re gone, I can be the one who can adopt him 😊

Any Cockatoo raised in the way Chris has obviously been raised is capable of the same. They are highly intelligent and sensitive. When the trauma of being rejected and passed around from home to home robs them of so much of their innate qualities. Just like a child. Chris is an extremely fortunate Cockatoo. Much appreciation to his human companions.

You would be surprised. I'm not as much of a bird person who can call out specific breeds on sight, but I do know there's TONS of bird types that can speak it's taught language up to about I think 5 years old child. This guy is obviously one. The most striking and sad story (that you can look up) was a bird actually testifying in court 😭 he witnessed the whole thing and would frequently repeat his "Mom's" last words and cries. Poor baby bird was so traumatized. 💔

If you’re talking about the bird that re-enacted the murder of Glenna Duram’s husband, the bird 🦜 didn’t actually testify, although the prosecutor considered it.
Glenna gambled away many thousands of dollars, destroyed her and her husband’s credit and put their home into foreclosure. I believe that she killed her husband (and failed at killing herself) so that he’d never know how she had destroyed their lives and so she wouldn’t be prosecuted for her crimes.
Glenna is now in prison for life (😃👍) and the hero bird is living with the murdered man’s ex-wife.

@@EYE_GOTCHA Wow! Thanks for that, I might Google it for further reading. I'm honestly not sure if that's the case or not. I wish I could remember the channels name but I pretty sure the bird was an African Grey? The channel was basically it and it's rescue mom after the fact. But that poor bird was haunted and said some very strange things. Would hid in corners and just yell abusive stuff it had obviously heard way to many times at night. His mom would have to find him and calm him down with cuddles and "you're safe here". That part just always really broke my heart and stuck in my memory. I may try to find and link the video where she does a q&a about why he did those things and talks about the specifics of the incident and subsequent after math. I could have just made an assumption that it happened instead of considered. It was a long time ago. I really hope there's not too many similar stories. 💔

I'm an Australian, and have flocks of wild cockatoos in my area. I love watching them at twilight in spring and summer as they are very sociable and natural comedians.
There are always a few individuals doing tricks to amuse themselves and the group.
They're loud when they're talking together, but it sounds glorious when they fly over in a huge group, their voices an attention grabbing birdy orchestra, and their white plumage a wonderful sight against a bright blue sky.
God bless you all, especially grandma Barbara ❤️🇭🇲

Feather-plucking is a reaction to stress. It is a bad behavior and should be dealt with by the use of avian vet!! I briefly had a Goffin's cockatoo whose original owner could not afford a prioer sized cage. He literally had bought just a cockatiel sized cage. That led to instant feather plucking by the young bird and maybe firtunately the young man became allergic to the feather dust. A pet store owning couple rehomed him to a full family. Cockatoos are SERIOUS COMMITMENTS and are not toys! Generally last up to or longer than a human lifespan, so please do not get one unless you have the resources needed to deal with that They are wonderful, intelligent, loving creatures that change your life!!

Yeah, she had ONE experience with an Umbrella cockatoo, and decided to badmouth them for all eternity. Very unprofessional. She made a video in which she acted all paranoid over her own Galah, exagerated everything. She is a bird trainer. Their motto is: saving lives, one bird at a time. She should add: except for cockatoos, because they can go f*ck themselves. Cockatoos are indeed a challenge, but the reality is that people still have them, adopt them and want to give them a forever home, and she just doesn't help them at all. All because of her personal 'trauma'. Hell, I have been bitten so many times by my U2 in the beginning, but we worked through everthying. She should get over herself. I unsubscribed, because I couldn't stand her anymore.

Sorry I brought her up, Jamie was just being honest about her own personal experience, I like that. I nor Jamie are definitely not saying if one of the thousands of cockatoos that have lost their 'forever home', should not be you're dream bird, just be warned. PBS has an excellent documentary in their archives 'Parrot Confidential ', all should watch this very difficult truth before bringing a parrot into your home, much less encouraging breeding. This very kind lady mentioned when Barbara has left the planet, she may consider giving Chris to a sanctuary, there is a good chance Chris might grieve himself to death, I've seen it happen. I think it's wonderful how you feel about your Parrot no matter how many times it has bitten you, not everyone can handle that, so the bird gets ignored and left in its cage, until it is given up or worse. Suggest you research how much sanctuaries are overwhelmed and packed to the max all over America with 1000s of these now homeless beauties. Peace

That is not what I am saying. I know very well of the plight of sanctuaries and the cockatoos that are abandonded, neglected, or abused. That’s why it is so important to offer training and courses to people who have a cockatoo (or want to adopt one), so these birds don’t end up in those already overcrowded sanctuaries when things don’t work out.
Besides, she is a ‘professional’ bird trainer; she is supposed to handle all parrots, and not exclude the ones you experience some difficulty with. And I have seen macaws worse than cockatoos in her videos. She wasn’t honest; the whole setup was staged, and she was faking her fear of her own cockatoo. Also, the information both she and her husband put out there is inaccurate. All they do is profiling the kind of person that would get a cockatoo, implicitly trying to find an excuse for their pov. And how could they know about cockatoos?? They never train one, much less spend a long period of time with one.
Being honest about the nature of and care for cockatoos is different from letting one personal experience cloud your vision and your responsibility as a bird trainer with a clear philosophy, and subsequently deciding to exclude all cockatoos from you videos or from being a project bird. That is racist to me.
I adopted my U2, and I always discourage people from getting one, because I know how fickle people are. It takes so much to take of a parrot. They are not toys, but very much like toddlers that will stay that way for the rest of your life. My U2 is my child and soulmate, and I will always put this health and happiness above mine.
Sorry for the rant. I just get so pissed off when people like her talk smack about cockatoos, especially when they don’t even bother to really know about them. By all means, don’t ever sugarcoat it. But be part of the solution instead of adding to the problem by sweeping it under the rug.
By the way, I think the lady in the video was talking about herself when discussing Chris’s fate. Barbara might not have long. I hope she finds him another paront.

I watch a lot of Cockatoo videos because I love Cockatoos. Out of all of them this is the one that demonstrates the extraordinary intelligence, emotions, awareness, understanding, and yes compassion. As you have had him for 20 years, I infer that Chris has had you as human companion from the beginning, and has never been rejected and passed around from home to home. What a difference the absence of trauma can make in the life of these intelligent, sensitive birds. You obviously give him the attention he needs to thrive. So many people have no idea what is required to bring a Cockatoo into their life. I am thankful and grateful to you on behalf of all Cockatoos.
His reaction when Barbara goes to the bathroom is hilarious. My aging dog has recently taken to doing the same. He barks in a summoning manner and sometimes comes in to check that I'm really there and not lying to him when I bark back to say, "I'm in the bathroom!" 🤣

Please put more videos on TH-cam if you can.. Apart from the fact that they are a delight to watch, they are educational because people can see the difference between a Cockatoo that has been raised with knowledge and compassion vs many rescues who've been traumatized and have behaviour and trust issues. The people who rescue these birds are saints. No different from rescuing an abused, abandoned child from social services. It can be a daunting challenge. It is gratifying to see that there many who not only rise to that challenge, but dedicate so much of their lives to provide a safe space with consistency, compassion, and interactive attention.
The downside to all these wonderful videos is that so many people say, Oh, I want one! having no idea of the commitment involved.
Thanks again for so clearly demonstrating the difference. 😘🙏
