    He’s telling you his name is Eric. I rescued an African Meyer’s Parrot whose owner died and I started calling her Kiwi because we didn’t know what her name was. After a while she started calling out the name “Cokey”. I then started calling her Cokey and she would become excited and calling out Cokey with enthusiasm. Poor baby, I love her so very much. ❤

      @@ArcYT I'm sharing this for the first time, and never even with family members: When I was 12 years old, we had a sweet and playful German Shepherd puppy that I loved to bits. My older brother and I had named him Apollo, mostly because it sounded cool, and also because that was the time of NASA's Apollo program. In spite of having been vaccinated for distemper, Apollo came down very fast and very hard with the disease and was suffering terribly. My dad, likely knowing what was in store, suffered my presence in joining him and Apollo for the trip to the vet. I still don't recall ever seeing my dad affectionately interacting with Apollo in the ways that I did (perhaps because when you're 12 years old, you're in your own world and miss a lot of stuff), but when the vet ( I remember he looking very sad) told us that our pup couldn't be saved and needed to be put down, my dad broke down and openly wept... something that I had never seen him do before. Afterward, he asked me to not tell anyone about his reaction at the vet's. I can relate this now since my dad is now gone. Whatever meaning, whatever life-lesson anyone could take away from all this, will be very personal and likely varied. All I can say is _learn_ from and, if fortunate, _cherish_ your memories.

    I've had 2 cockatoos for 10 years now. It is amazing how much personality they have. The male also sings spontaneously and talks a lot. The female only really says "hello." The male also calls for "Emily," but we have no idea who she was. He's 29 now, she's 26. He was abused for 10 years, kept in a cage with no toys, nothing to do, in a room by himself and he was only fed and watered. Of course he plucks himself because of this, but since we've had him he does better. We think the female was a breeder. We do not breed them.

Please don't ever get this sort of bird without keeping in mind that they bond to you like it's their soul grafted on to their humans. It almost killed her when I was stuck in the hospital for 3 weeks over a decade ago and since then, I have contingencies to keep her emotionally well and stable so we can keep herself physically healthy. ❤ she is worth it and I want her here long enough to inherit my kid who she loves one day.❤

      If that's your bird in your picture she's absolutely lovely. What a great idea to have plans in place for if you need to be gone and she needs other caregivers.
      I do want to say, and maybe I misunderstood what you meant so feel free to correct me, make sure to make a plan for your bird in the years ahead, after you are gone or can no longer care for her. While I'm sure its a lovely notion for people that their kids can inherit their pets, it's not so nice in reality. I'm dealing with this right now with my elderly parents and their two parrots. I grew up with both of those birds and I am fond them, but I am not in a position where I can adequately care for them after my parents are gone. In fact if my parents can't put in place a plan for the birds for after they are gone, that puts me and the birds in a very precarious situation.
      If your child grows up and bonds with your bird and is ready and willing to take over her care when you are no longer here, then that's the best case scenario. But also plan for if your child can't. If he/she doesn't want the bird, or isn't in a situation where proper care can be given for that kind of pet. It's not fair to expect that of your child when they've had no say in the matter.

      I think a lot of them also don't really understand the level of intelligence these birds possess -- the equivalent of about a six-year-old child. They require a lot of attention, high interaction and stimulation. If they're not given what they need, they're quite capable of turning into little monsters to get it, just like kids can.

    It's so heart warming to see when a cockatoo finally finds a genuine forever home.
    I have a 'rescue too' myself and yes they are a HUGE handfull. Breaking old habits, making new ones, removing fears and anxieties they may have had from the old relationship, forging new bonds and friendships, it's a lot of work, but SO rewarding when they turn out to be the angels you always seen inside them!!
    When my parents died, one right after the other, I was in a very bad place, with nobody to turn to. The rest of the family was bickering over who got what etc. I was all alone with nothing but my quickly deteriorating outlook on life to deal with. One day I was having a really bad time and just thinking of saying F it, im done. While I sat in my chair staring at nothing really, my little sweetie out of nowhere, climbed up the side of my chair, up my arm, across my shoulder and nuzzled my neck and nibbled my ear and said, I love you, then climbed back down and sat on my lap, working his way under my hand and arm to be pet.
    It was at that point that I realized that I HAVE to stick around, ...to take care of him, because nobody else would, and he needed me.
    (I needed him desperately too at that time, I am able to look back upon and now realize).
    Even to this day, he seems to realize when I am down or not feeling good and will always come to try to cheer me up, or just sit there quietly with me, being company, basically my little feathered guardian angel. I have it in my will that when I go, he goes to one of the 'forever homes' for parrots along with a healthy stipend to ensure he is taken care of properly until the end of his natural life as well.

      I have a Congo African grey parrot. He’s probably almost 40 years old. He belong to my mother. And my mother decided that she wanted to give them to me. So I took him and he didn’t trust anybody. But he was a talker and he love to sing. Anyway, I had to gain his trust, and I’ll tell yeah I’ve got some scars on my arms and on my fingers where he had bit me. I got him in 2014 and within the six months he really started to trust me where he would sit on my shoulder and I wouldn’t worry about him biting me. My mom was like wow. Unfortunately my mother was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in September 2017, and, I really do miss her. I wish she could see my Congo. African grey parrot now, because he is a spoiled brat. He loves me so much. And there are times when he’s talking to me. He sounds just like my mother. He was supposed to go to my son when I passed away. But unfortunately 10 days after my mothers funeral, my 26 year old son passed away from an aneurysm. So I am 60 years old now and yes I had my children in my 30s. Smoky loved my son..And my parrot has been taken very good care of and he could live to be over 100 years old. I know that he will outlive me. My daughter said she didn’t want anything to do with him. So I had been so worried. Well her little seven-year-old daughter, which is my granddaughter, promised me, GiGi I will take care of smoky!!! He has bitten her twice when she was younger on the finger. But now that she’s seven years old when she’s visiting my home, they have started bonding. She can now hand him a peanut. But we still have a lot more work to do. Because smoky loves me so much. And there are times when he talks just like my son. And it brings tears to my eyes and smoky starts crying with me. They say he has the mentality of a six-year-old child. And he carries on some of the greatest conversations with me. He sings he dance. And I just hope that I live long enough where Sophie will be able to take care of him. Since she is trying to bond with him too… so I loved your story. And I wanted to share mine.❤❤❤❤

      @aarons7975 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

      @@aumi.jewels It takes a while for a bird to trust you, to REALLY trust you, especially if they came from an abusive environment. Greys are a bit more quirky on this as well, they often want to bond with one person and everyone else, go away !! it'll take time with your daughter but it will happen eventually. I have found that they can really detect / sense what is in a person's soul, no matter what kind of false face that person tries to put on! If he's letting her give him food, then he trusts her and that trust will grow. My Paco now, I am lucky, he's an attention whore, it takes him about 5 minutes to decide if he likes you or not and once he does .. it's hard to get RID of him!
      It's funny in a way, I have had people come to the house over the years, trying to sell me this, that and about everything else you can imagine! I'll bring the Peach Pest out to say hello. If he's all quick to want to hop on their shoulder I know the person is at least somewhat a decent person, but if he don't trust them or is edgy around them, not interested, go down the road buddy!! he has not steered me wrong yet!
      Thank you for your story, wish there were more out there, but also on the same hand, glad there are not, because we don't need people thinking oh I want one now TOO!! and a few years down the road, here's another bird needing rescue.

They are some the the MOST high maintenance pets to have by far! They often have complicated behavior problems, do not mix well with children and other animals, require a tremendous daily time commitment, are VERY loud, and have very expensive vet bills. Some people consider the drawbacks worth it, but many find them to be overwhelming!

I would talk with them and they would talk with me. They loved to be gently petted and scratched. I even brought two of them to school when I was in kindergarten for show and tell - and they were so calm. Once I had been playing with them and my mother called me to go to the store with her. When we got in the car and backed out of the driveway - the chickens chased after the car! Of course we stopped and took them back home. I've had MANY different animals for pets (including dogs, cats, horses, lizards, etc) and ,as far as birds go, would not consider chickens particularly high maintenance, and in my case, they were certainly child friendly - though their needs and local zoning laws would need to be attended to.

      @@turnerturner3281 thank you for your great insights here 👍❤️… I believe you are right, 100%. Birds are very high maintenance, amongst all the pets one can keep. Actually, all animals that ppl keep as pets, whether cat, dog, rabbit, Guinea pig, amphibian, and so forth and so on… require a lot of attention and care. However ppl seem to think that pets like cats and dogs, for example, are super easy to care for, as long as they’re fed twice a day. But NO, that’s not true. These animals have many needs, and those needs are important to their ongoing happiness and welfare. I won’t rattle on right now, or I’ll bore you to death, but there’s much to learn about caring for any animal. We have taken in a number of cockatoos over the years. We still have several, as some of them came after being on terrible diets like short bread and Coca-Cola. Each one had big personalities, but none like yours. People would get them very young and then after the noise, dust and carrying on drove them nuts they would come to us. Feather picking is a common issue as they take it personally when their human family hands them off to another family who a year or so later does the same thing. They can be terrific birds with the most beautiful eyes, and give the most wonderful hugs which they will appreciate for 24 hours a day if you let them. You have done wonderful work with this bird, has a great deal of fun with your pen drawer and the hormone stage I would call nest mode when they are ready to breed and may even lay eggs and defend their cage at all cost for a month or so. Glad you brought this bird back to its full healthy self, nicely done.

    they are so strong, big, loud and beautiful in the wild. i was once in a park in a remote country town where there was a flock of about 150 of them. i flew a kite. they had never seen a kite before, they were screeching and attacking it. it was wild. the noise was deafening . beautiful birds

    My brother-in-law gifted my husband an umbrella cockatoo he couldn't handle. The first year I was skeptical I thought of her as a liability. Now four years later the more I learn about her and the more she's grown into the family. I know she's a member of our family for Life, me and my husband constantly tell our Three Sons one of them is going to have pepper our bird. Chances are she will still be alive when me and my husband are gone, and I want her to always be with family.

      @Gloria Eller He is called CUMULUS - Eric must have been someone important in his life at some point, or more to the point, someone that was part of the human he (cumulus) lived with, so he would have heard that name a lot. They clearly say in the video: "Nobody knows who Eric is"

    • @mala3isity
      @mala3isity 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      That's an interesting idea, kinda makes sense. His original owners would have said his name over and over so he'd learn. That'd explain the singsong Eric. He's also a mischievous bird, that'd explain the scolding Eric he does. Like everyone else, I first thought Eric might've been his first child family member or maybe another pet but your idea makes me wonder. Animals often get new names with new humans so we don't know if Cumulus is his original name.

    Cumulus is HYSTERICAL! So much personality in such a small package. I love the whispering even though it sounds like gibberish, he's very goofy, and even though I know it's not good, the bad behavior is too funny - especially the attitude he gives back when he's not supposed to be in the office supplies. Oh yeah, and the constant repetition of the name Eric - such a lovable goofball.
