Decided to compare the original mono mix and the shitty 5.1 remix of the movie The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, which replaced a bunch of old sound effects like gunshots with newer and more modern ones.

I hate when they do this to old films. Those classic gunshots have a charm that modern sound design can never capture.

Yeah i hate the remix version

Exactly. These idiots have no idea how to do any damn remaster. Just lazy use of stock sound effects and layer them on top of existing sounds. So lazy.

Same. As long as I respect every remix version which is made for digital surround speakers, using some stock sucking fashion, I'd like to stick with the original.

The gun shot and horse neighing at 0:05 was sampled by The Avalanches in "Frontier Psychiatrist".

Why do they always do a crap job on these remixes? The sounds just never sound right, too loud for one. The originals just sound so much more meaty and real

"More real"? If you just like me ahead founded the guns sounds of the remix weird, you will become depressed by how much trash guns sounds like in real life!

The old sounds aren't real but are more expressive and have souls. These lazy remix is simply some stock gun sounds layered on top of the existing sounds and calling that a day. No investment in any proper sound design that tries to recapture the classic feeling. There's a lack of craftmanship that we have seen from the crew of this movie.

@@hoppinggnomethe4154 It's also not helped by the fact that iirc there are no real stem sources for the original audio left that they can use to remix it. So they can't seperate the music, voices, and sound effects etc. So the 5.1 remixes by their very nature have to be the original mono but with tacky new sound effects added on top of the old ones, which are still there underneath the new sound effects, so they can make it 'surround' and all that. The fact is, it's not even possible to do a good 5.1 remix of the movie, even putting purism about original mono mixes aside (I always prefer them even to very faithful surround sound remixes) the material just isn't there to make an even passable remix to begin with.

Redo this video with the new 4K release from Kino, it has a much better mono track sourced from the 1990 Laserdisc, puts the 2017 mono to shame.

    • @charvelgtrs

@@raccoonwarriorprincess1024 The source is much higher fidelity, not tinny like the mono track from the 2017 Blu ray.

@@charvelgtrs in all fairness I didn't use the 2017 mono track for this comparison, you may be thinking of the 2014 mono track which I know for a fact sounded terrible
The 2017 track to me sounded decent but I haven't heard the new track yet

Anyways, the English mono track on the 2017 disc is from the same source as the 2014 disc with the only difference being lossless instead of lossy.

where is 0:58 sourced from? sounds a lot more stereophonic and believable than the 5.1 shown after.

The mono sounds better they really ruined it with 5.1 this is why you always spend time looking for the most original looking and see if it has mono Audio included

Both are good but I prefer the 5.1 remix. The surround sound adds a lot to the movie.
