Is it just me, or does this animation look strangely better than your average theatre movie?
I was going to scoff at this ... but, among other elements, the vegetation on the forest floor is pretty incredible. Some of it is a cut above, yeah.
Because "Your average theatre movie" is made by cheap bastards.
Well no, not cheap bastards per se. Just those with time constraints and a audience who will mainly not care for the details.
It's because real life doesn't look like this. The whole thing was done through CGI and was made too look fantastical, with over-saturated colors and a lot of fancy effects. My guess is they were trying to make it feel like the video game.
This is a 4 minute short made with no time constraints as opposed to a feature-length movie with time and budgetary constraints. Be quiet.
HOLY SHIT...

ZeldaMaster Hi ZeldaMaster! 😊
With the Mario movie so successful, I’d love to see a dark, eerie Majora’s Mask movie. I know it’ll never happen. But a person can dream
Mario movie sucked compared to this. I'm not being aggresive w you, just opinion
@@bruuuh4892 that mario movie was just a nostalgia trip for older fans and a fun adventure for younger fans. It wasn't supposed to be a complicated story, and I enjoyed it for what it was. Did you? Your opinion is valid, but implies you didn't like it
@@lordofmcflies8982 In my case I'm an older fan. Known Nintendo since the 90s. And my opinion is that the script was bad, and lacked Nintendo essence. That's what Illuminatons took care of. I think Ember Lab would have done a job 10 times better. Just my opinion, Jack Black was excellent though.
@@lordofmcflies8982 I dont think a complicated story Is what we need. I mean, puss in boots 2, was a simple story and is a masterpiece.
They are making a Legend of Zelda movie. Not sure of what format/style
After six years, I finally realized that Skull Kid's stumbling and screaming when he puts on the mask is directly inspired by Link's animations when he puts on the transformation masks. And Skull Kid looking up at the camera for one final scream means the transformation is complete, just like with Link's masks.
Amazing. Beautiful. Absolutely astounding the amount of details the animation team here added. It's 2023 and I'm still noticing new things
definitely. These folks need to be in charge of a Majora's Mask film without a doubt!!! I'd go to the cinemas to see a 2hr version of his short countless times!
Another detail I love is the Happy Mask Salesman's voice. Did you notice his accent? He's played by a Japanese actor, which is very fitting when you realize the character was modelled after Shiggy.
Omg how did I not see this lol
Another thing that is noticeable but is never out right stated is that these transformations HURT, either you're ripping limbs body structure to fit the form
Or your ripping your soul into there body or vice versa
Either way it's cracked
Also also the mask has tentacles it could easily be plugging the ears eyes and nose sockets like some alien face hugger
Anyway welcome to my nightmares
Calm down. You look way too deeply into shit. Majora took skull kid's soul . He was just an imp who found a mask and it gave him unimaginable power. He used to be friends with 4 giants. Forest, Snow, Fire, Stone. Get yer shit right before ruining a godsend game
it gets more dramatic when you realize this is about a kid's life being ruined by a small amount of curiosity leading him to a dark future
I think what you wanted to say was: Leading him to a terrible fate.

They're making a Zelda live-action now in case you didn't know. I really wanted it to be animated instead, but we can pray
Majora’s Mask is ranked to be the 5th most disturbing game title ever created, and this video amplifies the amount of terror that game provides tenfold. Truly a masterpiece of horror.
Where’s that list?
ya, list please.
Not ever, and not out of all games on the market. At least I can’t find any evidence of it. It’s the scariest/most disturbing Zelda game in the franchise but I can think of plenty of those games that top this. Outlast?
Someone hire this guy for movie animation/game animation it's too fuckin real
I KNOW RIGHT?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?! AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
This is some good damn animation here.
It's a team of people animating
It's a whole studio I believe
Joe Mueller correction. Two people animated this. The others did rendering, production, and etc...
when you hear about a game being made into a movie, you'd expect it to look like this.
Exactly but most companies want to change things around to make it different or "more realistic"
Saddly once a major studio gets involved it becomes %100 profit driven, the movie would consist of endless waves of exposition attempting to explain zelda lore to people who've never played any of the games, it would try to be both serious and funny, it would try to aim for children and adults, it would shove in political messages and diversity casting, and would inevitably become a cluttered unfocused mess of concepts attempting to appeal to the widest audience possible and end up appealing to none... This video right here is a masterpiece of love and effort, as someone who does a lot of 3d design, simple things like the water running off skull kids hat, to the animating skill where the happy mask salesman has this perfect expression of unsettling malice, it truly shows the soul and passion put into this, something that a major studio doing a full length movie would just never be able to accomplish. Lizard people of the movie studios have never exactly been known to have souls.
but no, they just make a movie that has the main 3 characters of Zelda (Link,Ganon,Zelda) in some overly unfunny circumstance that otherwise has nothing to do with the games.
and then it ends up looking like the mario movie from the 90's lol
@@thatoneoctopus7494 pretty much

Ganon is a giant boar with magic, who's origins we know clearly. Majora is a powerful eldritch horror which can consume even the best of people who's only desire is chaos, and we have no clue where it came from. So yeah, Majora is scarier than Ganon
Only thing Ganon has on Majora is the constant reincarnation
Hacky Zach majora is a cursed soul that can destroy a planet and move a moon while Ganon is a being of pure demise that is cursed to bring destruction to hyrule,They’re both pretty much the same but one curse is on a mask and the other is on hyrule. On top of that majors is stronger than ganon, majora might as well be a stronger ganon curse that’s easier to break.

This hits a little different when you know he’s really just a poor lonely child that got lost in the forest and turned into a skull kid ... ):
Jitske's World I’d imagine he just wanted to play with the mask, just a curious child >.
Yeah, this was the first game I bought for my brother's N64 back in January '01. I got OoT after it, so I didn't learn about the stalchild origin until I beat this one. I replayed MM when I was about 10, and picked up on a ton of stuff I didn't when I was 8. It was the first video game to make me cry from the emotion of it. MM has some really touching moments for a Nintendo game.
Relevant to learning the origin of stalchildren, one example is the giant in the ocean temple. The giants have only seconds to convey a couple critical words to help you on your perilous journey, and one of them chose to use that precious time to say "save our friend." Not free us. Not save Termina. He said "save our friend." Save Skull Kid. Despite the death and destruction Skull Kid had wrought upon the world under the mask's influence, and despite Skull Kid hating the giants for abandoning him, they still loved their little old friend. They knew he was possessed by Majora's Mask, and they implored you to spare his life and try to save him from the mask.
Another hard-hitting one for me was the little girl in the music box house who was desperately trying to keep her father locked in a cupboard of full of talismans. He'd succumbed to the gibdos curse and was turning, all while their home was surrounded by undead creatures seeking to claim him. When you reactivate the magic song then break his curse, the girl runs to her father and embraces him. Dazed and confused, the father asks his child what had happened. The girl assures him it was just a bad dream, likely something he had said to comfort her in the nights they spent together in that little research station in those haunted lands. Then you realize, this child, no older than 9, was forced to keep herself and her dying father alive for God knows how long, surrounded by monsters banging at her door, in a wasteland where no one was coming to save her, with access to countless tomes of arcane research that could probably save his life, but each far beyond her level of understanding. All she knew was the talismans. It was like a child trying to apply band-aids as she watched her only living parent bleed out from a deadly wound.
@@literallyunfunny Beautiful insight! Thank you for the input it definitely got me thinking.... now I want to play it all over again!!!
Finding that mask was his terrible fate.
@GayNation I've never read any fanfiction. The game's pretty vague, so there's no gospel text to pull from. It's nothing more than my interpretation, but a very reasonable one I think. I mostly just put together things we know for a fact. The largest leap I took was with the charm tags in the closet, making the assumption that she put them there herself and knows enough of her father's work to do so. To be fair, all this could only apply if they intended all the elements of the game to tell a coherent story, which I believe they did. Like if we assume Aonuma just said "oh the dad is in the closet because we needed a place to put him so you could get a mask" instead of thinking "Hm, what would the daughter do if her dad were cursed? Ah, let's put him in the closet, and we'll let the the players know that's what happened because if they approach him, she'll imply she's trying to keep him in there."
I love how Skull Kid's voice deepens when he puts on the mask, just like Link when he puts on the transformation masks.
6 Years later and this is still a masterpiece
Agreed 😩
Why does it look like it`s animated in 2040
Because its a cg animation
No dip, Sherlock
This is what you can do with modern technology. Movie studios cut corners and go as fast as possible so they can make money as soon as possible
Fan works have love and time
Cuz it was made in 2040 B)
Because it's not all CG. The environments are real places they filmed and then added the CG characters into.

+OmegaAlphaWarrior M The Same company that took down the amazing Pokemon Uranium and AM2R? Also they also have their own team of animators and keeps their IPs to themselves. Nintendo is going to be pissed instead of impressed.
+Monstrozoid
Nintendo wouldn't copyright strike a video like this. It's usually TH-cam's fucked up algorithm that causes that to happen. Nintendo usually only does copyright claims (which is much less serious than a strike) and they mainly do it for videos that have unaltered gameplay of their games without their permission. Which isn't much different from what a lot of other companies do, Nintendo just gets the most attention for it since the media is heavily biased against them.
Please do some research before you say outlandish bullcrap.
Yup. I only hope they get impressed before they sue them.
Wishfully thinking that when Nintendo says they're making a live action Zelda movie, they actually mean "live action" like the Lion King remake, and it can actually look more like this short film.

I like to think that what the mask salesman is seeing here is what's actually happening in reality, maybe not so much with the fire, but those tendrils are real and they are hypnotizing skull kid, making his reality seem like he's just simply placing it on his face
the fleshy tendrils are what dig into his face and secure the mask to the host, hence the screaming.

With the announcement of the upcoming movie, I can't help but return to this masterpiece. I absolutely love how well the happy mask salesman is translated into a semi-realistic style that fits naturally into a live action setting whilst still keeping the charm of his design from the games.
I feel like a lot of that charm will be lost with a live-action cast, as it seems the movie is going to have. If I'm being honest here, using live-action to portray characters from the legend of zelda feels weird. I just don't think it'll translate as well, and I would much rather the movie took an approach similar to this short.
All well, I can't have everything I want, and despite my gripes with the decision to make the movie fully live action, I hope my fears ate proven wrong and I hope the movie will be as amazing as this short. Although they're gonna have a hard time getting there, nothing is technically perfect, but this short is about as close as you can get.

But no, you all act like Nintendo are crazy tyrants because they did what they had to do to protect their IPs
If you haven't noticed, plenty of videos that are well within the grounds of fair use get taken down anyway simply because they know the process to fight a claim is lengthy and difficult (and somewhat threatening) and many users will just take the strike. Pretty sure they were just joking around this fact not directly insulting Nintendo beyond what is reasonable.
Most are taken down such as fan-games because they could profit off it but also buyers could mistake it for Nintendo' actual work, lets face it we know SOME buyers dont even read the rating label on games these days
no its because nintendo are pricks and want all the youtube money theirselves. stop being a fanboy.
No way, this is 7 years old….?
The quality is insane.
I feel like during the night scene when the Mask Salesman is staring into the Mask, it's trying to already control him but he himself is trying to resist... hence why he falls over and his eyes roll up. When he writhes on the ground the mask is trying to get him to reach out with little to no success.... but then Skull Kid picks it up, and being a child his will is much less powerful than the Salesmen.
The sequence when Skull Kid succumbs to Majora's Mask is something out of a horror film. A well-written horror film.
The animation and sound design of that scene is so well done its hard to believe this is just a fan film.
Am I the only one who notices that the when he was screaming he did it just like link when he puts on the mask

never have I read a comment more relatable than this
The drawing is so good that it literally moves and creates a short film
@@xzzoiz6389 bruh I was gonna say that lol
Hahaha I hope this is original.
@@xzzoiz6389 THAT is true art
As a Majora's Mask fan, I can definitely say that this short-film is a masterpiece. Good Job, Ember Labs!
Looking at this after the announcement of a Live-Action Zelda film is,,,,kinda depressing
This is way too good. Like, Nintendo better hire y'all. This is incredible.
hi mando
can you imagine how good all their trailers would be if they were done by this guy!?!
It's amazing!
Knowing Nintendo, they'll probably take this down for copyright infringement...
Ricardo Saracino you won't believe this when i say: they done the opposite!
MOVIES WE CAN GET: A movie about emojis , too many seasame street movies. WHAT WE CANT GET: This awesome masterpiece
You now have 69 likes... you’re welcome.
Jay Playz sesame street’s were decent, i guess
Hopefully we get an emoji movie 2 and 3 and nintendo can sue more zelda fans for their creations
Cease and desiiiiiiiissstttt

Peaces out 💀
NO WAY IS THIS 6 YEARS OLD, DAAAAAMN!!! Suddenly popped in my recommended, and just had to rewatch, with Mario's success in movie form I can only hope they see this and get you to help make the Zelda games into movies. Only you, Ocarina, Majora, and Twilight I need this in my life.
No one:
Ember Labs: Drops this masterpiece then posts nothing for two years
you know what that means
they likely working on something in secret
Their Ult is in cooldown
3 years now.
But then again, look how long it took to make hazbin hotel
Shattered Hell how dare you compare vivziepop to these gods?
JUST TAKE MY MONEY ALREADY
wow Camila Cuevas here~
You like Maroja's Mask too, that's cool!
(lolol I love your animations)
owww it was unexpected to see you here
Agreed also I didn't think I would see you here
Camila Cuevas Camillllaaaa

My literal only complaint with this one is a complete nitpick -- the fairies. I always got the impression that the fairies in OoT and MM had humanoid bodies, but their glow was so intense it just made them appear as orbs of light with wings. But here they were designed to look like the orbs of light *are* their bodies.
I honestly *_prefer_* the "bodies are orbs" design; it's more unique, and allows for Zelda's faeries to stand-out further than others.
Came here because I hope the new Legend of Zelda live action movie looks half as good as this.
This is still stupidly beyond professional. This looks like something that would come out it 5 years not so long ago
Ethan Hudson I don’t think stupidly is the right word to use but yeah I definitely agree with you
@@yavaque9945 it's stupid that its not a movie already
Damn that was a treat to watch, hats off.

Don't you mean...
Masks off?
...Ill leave now...
Videos like this make me wish I had money to invest. I would give this guy everything I could to make this a reality. This game means everything to me and to see it done so well would actually bring tears to my eyes. Great job EmberLab!!
HAHA! Just what I commented!!
seven years and this still gives me goosebumps! i cry every time the music the atmosphere its perfect... please dont forget us! make something more to keep this flame alive!
I can't imagine anyone wouldn't prefer this team to have gotten the movie rights and funding...
I WANT MORE.
*THIS IS SO PERFECT.*
agreed
PRECISELY.
I like going back to this amazing short sometimes
One of the most amazing Nintendo based short films
True
Ye
You know the creators of this makes a game called kena bridge of spirits?
Based on a true story. A tale of prophecy of todays world. When we lose our humanity and plunged into total chaos, the day we first donned the mask! 😷
>Nintendo
>based
Impossible.
6 years later and this is still better animation than anything I've seen from a Category 1 studio like Disney
6 years later and this is still one of the best TH-cam videos ever made. I don’t even like Majora’s Mask as a game, but this video explores its story so well.
Mask Salesman: Nothing can withstand it's power!
>Fierce Deity has entered the chat
>Majora Left

THESE ARE THE PEOPLE THAT SHOULD BE MAKING A ZELDA MOVIE. SOMEONE CALL NINTENDO AND HOOK THEM UP WITH THESE GUYS!
FBI: *Already on it*
@Papiros Well, considering i first discovered this video on a playlist on nintendos offical youtube channel, I dont think they are gonna take it down anytime soon.
@Papiros How? What does this have to do with the fanbase being toxic?
From this film to the masterpiece that was Kena Bridge of Spirits, you guys sure have come a long way!
I hope to one day see this fully animated into a movie. Becouse by God is it amazing already.
This was made 5 years ago and is still better than most modern 3D animation and cinematography
Bruh thats what I was thinking
It is sick. Have to do research who made this.

it reminded me why i loved majora's mask in the first place. amazing tribute to a awesome game
So with you on this one! This is literally the most amazing thing I have seen in a long time. They should make a movie!!
Now that a zelda movie is a very real likelyhood, Nintendo needs to hire these people!!!
The horror theme behind all of this is immaculate, and i don’t even follow the zelda series.
3:56 The two shorts breaths followed a scream. Every transformation mask does this. Excellent touch.
elecshield Finally! I thought I was the only one. Glad you pointed it out
I REJECT MY HUMANITY, JOJO!
elecshield I'm glad I'm not the only one to notice this! :D
Oh, wow! I hadn't even noticed that - what a great, subtle reference! And now I realize the crackling sound and Skull Kid's pose are also similar to the original transformation scenes as well!
wow i did not even notice, good job.
Well...that was perfect in every way possible.
Imagine if majoras mask had a HD Remaster for the Switch mmmmmmm
hi rabbid
RABBIDLUIGI OH SUP :OOOO
You know a video is beyond awesome when one your favourite TH-camr starts commenting on how awesome it is.
rabbidluigi hi man love your videos
With the rumor about Nintendo is working on a animated Zelda movie,I just hope it's going to be as amazing as this Majora's mask short film
I hope skull kid will be in the movie
@@jessmooneyham9490 yeah possibly as a Easter egg in the Film
I hope they go for a vibe similar to this. Dark, brooding, and kinda terrifying
@@mycelium_6508 yeah especially we need more darker animated films already
@@Mr.Feather130 Please let it be 2d animated and look like Giblhi Movies if not use a style like this
Coming to this once again the day nintendo announced zelda movie
And OH BOY DO I WANT A TP/MM MOVIE (even if ocarina of time is probably whats gonna get chosen as main insparation )
I'm usually against video games made into movies, but I NEED a full movie of this
@Jeans yes have a 72 hour movie like the game and watch it all the 3 days that would be hype
@Jeans I mean look at avengers endgame that had a lot of time traveling and back to the future i think itll do fine
@Jeans the tighter time frame likely would help this if it was a movie
Video games made into movies?! I'm in heaven!
@Jeans
Fair point but animation-wise and cinematography-wise this is amazing
I like the subtlety in this version of the story. The Mask is a lot like The One Ring, it wants to be found and to be used, it wants to control someone. It tries to control the Happy Mask Salesman and you can see he's tempted but he resits, and so it knocks him out at exactly the right time to be found by Skull Kid.
Adding to the subtlety, it would be easy to have the mask look dynamic, powerful. However, other than the eyes flaring exactly once, the mask is completely inert. The way it's framed still makes it look incredibly dynamic and sinister, despite not actually doing anything.
Pretty sure the salesman didn't resist it. It looks like the mask knew that skullkid was near and wanted to take him instead of the salesman.
"The mask is precious to me, but I bear it with a great cost."
I'm completely in love with this idea-
_I so badly wish we could've had a film_
Anyways, now- *Time to watch this over and over again! 😃*
It's really not subtle at all LMFAO
This better be in the Live Action movie
Brought here from Arlo's recent Zelda Movie video...this is amazing! Just make this!
I’m going to sit here and pretend not to be disturbed by how the agony of Skull Kid putting on Majora’s Mask is a perfect mirror for / *pretty much exactly what happens when Link puts on transformation masks.*
If that was intentional, damn 👏
I never thought of that...now it is pretty disturbing
What is worse is that link could control himself when wearing a mask. Skull kid got taken over.
@@chaoticgoodcreations947 because they weren't manipulative trickster spirits
Stefan Fyhn but I think the Fierce Deity controls Link.
J. Han I think Fierce Deity Link might just be a previous Link(Maybe a Link we’ve never seen), since belonged Majora was in Hyrule, not Termina. It could set up for a prequel for Majoras Mask or Oot.
I like how the beak on skullkid's face is actually a mask
He looks like Groot.
@@interestingusername306 You misunderstand, he IS Groot.

He wore face masks before they were cool
years later and i still come back to watch this master piece every now and then. amazing piece of art, simply amazing
I remember watching this when it first came out. still probably my favorite animation on TH-cam which with all the pilots nowadays is an insane thing to say.
I’m might just be biased towards it since I love Majora’s Mask but still.
