Batman loses in combat against the Penguin. Batman loses in combat against Catwoman. Batman loses in combat to Harley. Anyone else seeing a pattern here? Dude's just into dressing up and getting beat on by women. Now, if they'd said: "We're going to make a Batman series, only Batman's not in it. Tales of Gotham (or some such), where we follow the lives of the extended Bat-family as they go about their days. We'll never see more of Batman than they do. We'll do an episode on Gordon, where we show how this straight-arrow policeman has to handle dealing with a loony who dresses like a bat, but keeps bringing in tips and info that are tearing Gotham's rackets apart. All he ever hears is a voice outside his window: "1:00 a.m. Pier 36, Sloane's bringing in explosives." and the info is always good. Reconciling that he's putting criminals away like never before, but he's basically acting as the Batman's patsy. Bitter pill to swallow, over and over again. I'd watch that.

Ok dear boba, Batman Caped Crusader needs more Batman and Bruce the side characters feel like they get more screen time then Batman plot is good but Batman needs to be center focused
I was already hyped for this show, now I’m obsessed before even seeing the first episode. And since you and I share very similar interests in what we like in Batman and Batman stories, I’m confident I’ll LOVE this and I cannot wait to see it.
Enjoyed it. Only criticism I have is Gotham does not look distinct enough. It is supposed to be a character itself that cast a shadow on everyone that lives in it. The setting itself could be metropolis and none would be the wiser. Why is Dent talking about urban renewal when the city hall and everything else look posh.
NO POLICE BLIMPS! One of the most charming ideas from BTAS was the introduction of the Police Blimps. I had hoped they were here to stay, as much as Mr. Freeze’s new backstory. Another review mentioned ,”NO POLICE BLIMPS” and the people who have heard are not happy! Grrr! At least there’s a chance of future episodes adopting them.
I think it's because the gdp is like pretty broke cause when they go after batman and say they are using most resources but it's only a handful of police
I think there's gonna be a progression as the seasons go forward. The character development is great, and I think Gotham will continue to be developed. Love the file cabinets in the bat cave no bat computer to solve crimes easy.

Asain harley Quinn I'd beat them guts. Her story was cool, honestly. She's kinda horny. Penguin honestly matches better as a woman, crazy, violent, loud, delusions of grandure dude that's women. 👌. I dig the 40's asthetic and design of the characters especially catwoman i'm a sucker for her golden age/silver age costume i also love the batsuit the only thing is that i wish they kept the purple gloves
I really enjoyed your review, and thank you for being so positive about this show as I keep hearing mixed reviews. I love how dark this feels, how much it feels like the 40’s and how they touched on characters and how they were originally created like Clayface for example. From what I’ve heard, Harley in this is how the creator originally wanted her. The voices are great. The only thing I wish they would have done differently is that they could have made the female penguin a completely new character cause I love her character. I don’t care for the gender swap but would love it if she has another son that was shunned that is more the penguin we know like the one in Batman Returns. Other than that, I really enjoyed this show and wish we could have had a lot more episodes. Nothing will replace Batman TAS as I grew up on it and still enjoy it to this day. But I love how much darker this feels and I love getting the Detective Batman. It’s one of the reasons I loved Matt Reeves The Batman so much!
@@chuckjones6055 If they wanted a black sidekick, why not use Static Shock instead of changing the Gordons? If they wanted crazed vigilante, why not used Lock-Up, Huntress or Anarchy instead of Quinn? You care, I care, they don't care.
The Penguin is a very different take but I overall enjoyed the show. Now for season two they just don't need to add so many origins but have more interaction with the known baddies.
The way you described Bruce Wayne/Batman dynamic in this series reminds me of the 2004 series "The Batman". I really enjoyed seeing the Batman side start off cold and slowly loosens up after having gaining his sidekicks. It was a gradual change over the seasons and I'm here for seeing the development of this one.
After watching for myself female penguin was the least of the show's issues. It's tries too hard to be different but also nostalgic at the same time to the point where it really becomes annoying/dumb. Especially the last episode which goes without saying why that's an issue. Female Penguin could get easily explained away if they go the route of killing her off and replacing her with another character but outside of those elements if you don't know a single clue about the characters and want to watch a Batman show it's okay but if you know the lore on the characters you're definitely going to be mad alot.
As someone who grew up on Bruce's Timm's original Batman TAS and is familiar with all the characters, while the swaps are 🙄, I'd say the bigger issue is most definitely the writing. I could forgive the swaps if the writing wasn't so meh. This has less restriction than the original series, yet somehow, it feels more simplistic and overstated compared to the original's more nuanced, unpredictable storytelling. While it's not a bad show, it's just simply not anywhere close to the level of any of Bruce's previous works in the DCAU.
@@JoshSportsMovies Most likely not. Since the DCAU ended, most of his animated works have been pretty mediocre. It's pretty clear he and his team are past their creative prime. From the writing all the way down to the character designs and aesthetics. The artwork looks dated, the dialogue, attention to details and character interactions are all lacking and Bruce Tim doesn't appear to have any new stories to tell with Batman which is partly why these stories feel cliche. Lastly this isn't Bruce first time writing a show. This season shouldn't have a learning curve as he should already know where he wants to go with it. That's just another sign that his heart isn't in this. None of his other previous shows needed a learning curve and were great right off the bat.
Gender swapping Penguin is SUPER weird! Somebody in the comments compared it to Calender Girl in TNBA but that was totally different. She was really a different character than Calendar Man. Same thing with Copperhead in the Arkham games or the female Ventriloquist in the comics, etc. This is obviously the same character (Oswald Cobblepot) as a woman. Very strange choice and character to choose to do that.
It is, but as its own thing I don't see a reason to be that worked up over it. Jim Gordon was a killer in Gotham by Gaslight. I think the changes in the series don't fit for the era, but the era perfectly fits Batman so it gets as much of a pass as MAWS from me.
@@handlebarsmustache Gotham by Gaslight is an Elseworlds story. I think people are confused that this is an Elseworlds Batman. This isn't an Elseworlds Batman. It's just set in an earlier time than we usually see Batman. It's set in the time when Batman first premiered in the comics.
@@MrScottyr86 But it is an Elseworlds series, unless you mean people supposed this is a part of The Animated Series which it never was? It's an elseworlds series by virtue of having changes and telling it's own story(I'm assuming by the Harley Quinn) It's still more faithful than most Batman adaptations that came before The Batman, if we're being honest (Harley and Penguin changes taken into consideration when saying that). I guess we'll have to see if the changes ruin it completely or if it's just more nitpicky complaints in an otherwise good story I suppose.
@@jacobcenter7374 uh, no... In Elseworlds, heroes are taken from their usual settings and put into strange and different times and places. Tons of DC characters have changed and evolved over time in the comics. Doesn't make them Elseworlds stories. It's still the same Bruce Wayne/Batman fighting crime in the same Gotham City. Still is super weird and stupid to make Penguin a woman. Kind of insulting to women too really, but I'm not a woman so I'd have to leave women to judge that. Not a very flattering character to turn into a woman though.
The reviews and criticisms about the show being woke are out of whack. I say this as someone who normally doesn’t see the point or need in gender or race swapping characters but this isn’t the show to point to as an example of why you shouldn’t do those things. The female Penguin I thought was great. Yes it could’ve been done a with a bit more charm or nuance but it presented an interesting angle for “what would this character be like if” and yeah it was still the same dark character just with kids and is a woman but idk I liked it and didn’t feel like it was some embarrassment to the character. I think the other complaint about it not including Batman that often is for a reason. They had to build an entire universe in 10 episodes. BTAS got damn near 70 (yes the first season is listed with 60-65 episodes). So understand the reason Batman isn’t the complete center piece of each episode is cause they have so much world building to do and sometimes that means other characters take priority in order to have a more cohesive overall universe in the long run. I think season 2 is gunna be insanely Batman centric especially considering he’s gunna be dealing with you know who in season 2 (no spoilers in case you haven’t seen the post credit scene from episode 10 season 1) All in all I loved the show, felt like it was different enough from BTAS to have its own identity while meeting the standard set by BTAS and other great Batman shows before it. I think we’ve got a lot to be excited about for the future of Batman: Caped Crusader EDIT: P.S. Kevin would be really proud.
I saw the series going in with an open minded and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought it had solid writing and character development. I had a hard time adjusting to the new Batman voice though. I guess if I had any complaints it would be sometimes the tech felt a little inconsistent for the time and glosses over much of the would be prejudices for this time period if set in our world’s 1940s. Also, there were lesbian relationships but no gay male relationships which I find disappointing. I have seen some bad faith reviews on the series though. They don’t really seem to have much of an argument other than women are in it.
I really liked the art style and general aesthetic of this show. I personally think it falls flat in terms of the writing, the voice acting, the music, and it generally just doesn't feel like anyone enjoyed making it. It had the potential to be great. Luckily that's just my opinion and hopefully some people will have fun watching it.
I missed this non spoiler review when it was released 3 days ago and now I can see all episodes were releasedo on Amazon Prime. Great video as always, you know how to hype me up Boba So I will finish watching My adventures with Superman and then binge watch Caped Crusader probably over the weekend.
I'll say my main issue with the show. It's not really about Batman, in most episodes the main character is Barbara. How they could fail so terribly is beyond me
1940's is perfect time period to showcase Batman Detective skills where is technoloy is not advanced and they have opportunity to showcase batman Detective skills
I love how it’s set In the 1940s to feel old school yet it’s still got that typical 2024 agenda behind it 😂. Nobody wanted a female penguin, not even the people defending it. I’ll still watch to see if it’s good but man my excitement went way down the drain with all the typical changes they made.
Finally had time to binge the entire season. We loved it!!! The 40s vibe was fantastic (va va voom Selina - I think I found my Halloween costume for this year!) and we can’t wait for season 2!!!
If Batman Caped Crusader and my adventures with Superman is in the same universe, then by the time superman appears in metropolis, Batman will have his bat family by that point. Edit: never mind I calculated how much time past between the 1940’s and 2020. Batman will be an old man in my adventures of Superman, if both shows were in the same universe.
I dont like when shows change characters gender and race most of the time but tbh i didnt really mind it too much in this I really enjoyed if for what it was would i perfer a normal penguin and harley yeah but i still liked it anyway tbh.
Doesn't look horrible, I still would have preferred a more strict continuation of the original animated series. To me, this is the safe route where a direct continuation would have been riskier but more desirable, to me at least.
Thank you for this! As always, you do such a great job at these no-spoiler reviews. You hit all the points I was curious about, from the more abstract stuff like tone and feel, to the more concrete details like the voice performances and the character design. I'm so pumped for this series and I'm even more sure I'm going to love it. One thing that puzzles me is the extreme and frankly toxic amount of hate it's already getting. Why? That's what I can't understand. If someone has seen it and they don't care for it, that's totally valid. But a lot of people are opining very strongly before watching and I don't get it. I have said before that there is no one definitive take on Batman, not anymore, if ever. If something is not to your taste, move on. But some people conflate their own preferences with whether something is artistically good or bad, and I've never been able to understand that.
I felt this new series is some WOKE garbage, but I'm a die hard TBAS fan and hated seeing them copy the noir style from the old series. Batman now is just another variation of a depressed individual, not at all as investigative as the one we knew. Why did they have to change Penguin into a female (especially when they are making a live action Penguin movie w Colin Ferral - seems counter productive) wasn't there enough female villains (Catwoman/Ivy/Harley)? Couldn't they just had made Female Penguin - Fish? Pennyworth is now some fat balding butler, not at all the ex-british military man, which would make sense to him being Batman's partner. This Pennyworth is like his mom, making sure he's working on a full stomach and telling him to get sleep. Bullock being corrupt now really sucks, before he was unkempt and not a fan of Bats, but he was a more trusted cop. Catwoman's maid - seems to be a stereotype I'm suprised they portrayed....Don't get me started on Bruce Timm, he'll throw batman on any pitch, good or bad these days.

My favorite Superheroes are Batman, Superman and Spider-Man. I think they are the best heroes from the comics and they definitely have the best villians. My favorite TV Show is Smallville and my favorite Movie is The Dark Knight. Superman and Lois is my second favorite TV Show and Scream 1996 is my second favorite movie. Sidney Prescott played by Neve Campbell is a Superhero if you really think about it. She's willing to help others even if she doesn't want to and she always wins. Pluse she won't die all that easy. Just watch Scream 4. So Sidney Prescott has been added to my list with Batman, Superman and Spider-Man. Ghostface would definitely in with Gotham City.
Turning the penguin and Mr freeze into female characters is a major bummer and some may not like this including me. Otherwise the show looks awesome and hope it lives up to the standard of the original Batman The Animated Series
Hi there, prior to the release of Batman Caped Crusader, there was a featurette on TH-cam that established female characters such as Eleonora Fries along with Oswalda Cobblepot. If fries didn't show up in the first season, there's a very good probability that she will show up on the next
Batman: The Animated Series is where my start with Batman. I was born in 1993 and didn't start watching the show until the late 90s to early 2,000's. It defined who Batman really is and that what I like about Bale's and Pattinson's Batmen. They are the closest to Kevin Conroy's Batman, which is what I look for in Batman through live action. Batman: TAS is still one of my favorite animated shows today and it ranks in my top 10 at #7 on my list for top favorite TV Shows of all time. So I'm definitely looking forward to seeing this show on August 1st.
I watched all episodes ,overall I enjoyed it but had several concerns . I know it's a Elseworld version set in the 1930/40 a noir view . But why change several of the charcters,also their sexuality . But this seems to the current system now by the people in charge of tv,movies books & comics they like to change the legends which upset the purists. Not as good as the original version ,but worth watching overall I would only give it 7.5 out 10, it was a interesting view . Let's see if they make a second series ,time will tell.
@adamthompson9785 I'm 7 episodes in and they're really nothing special. I don't really care for the Batman voice actor, but then again who can top Conroy? I was around 13 or 14 when BTAS aired on Fox, and I hadn't been excited for cartoons since the days of Masters of the Universe. BTAS for me was Uber top notch, this show however just misses the mark. I don't even mind the female penguin, but it's everything else: the race swapping business for one and lame villians. None of them are really threatening. I'll finish up the season and see how everything unfolds but as of right now I'm not impressed.
@@anthonyjenkins2001 it was the Penguin thing that set my mood. Penguin doesn't do showtunes. The writing was terrible, she murdered her son because her arch rival said so????... What!? And Penguin is so unattractive, yet the guys go wild for her??? The Batman voice was soooo flat, just some guy doing a gruff voice. There was no real difference in the Bruce Wayne performance either. It was a mess!

Can we all just be *real* for a sec here? This show turned out to be an utter farce. It's essentially a "modern day" Batman parody that's not even funny. Paul Dini wouldn't have allowed this gutless crap to be written, so I guess it's no wonder he has nothing to do with this project, and I honestly question how much Reeves even had to do with it. This seems more like Bruce Timm, JJ Abrams and a bunch of horrible writers got together to make a show that would piss off anyone who truly loves Batman and his roster of characters. I mean, opening the show with "Oswalda Cobblepot" is certainly a statement of intent for the rest of the series, not to mention she's an absolutely stupid idea to begin with. That *has* to be one of the laziest gender-swaps I've ever seen, for ANY character. Also, why is every character drawn to look completely overweight? Renee Montoya doesn't even look like she could walk up the court room steps. Bruce Timm should be fucking embarassed by this. He used to know how to actually draw a woman. Now they all have cankles, with the exception of like, one or two. The characterization of, well, everyone, is SO SO wrong. They've ruined Harley, or whatever the hell she's supposed to be (cause it's certainly not Harley Quinn). I guess Barbara is salvageable, but isn't it odd that they decided to race-swap her, but still maintain her red hair for some reason? I keep hearing this show referred to as "darker than B:TAS", but the only thing about it that's actually "darker" than the Paul Dini show is whatever is going on inside the creator's minds. This show is like a really bad acid trip. Not to mention, setting it in the 30's/40's is utterly senseless if the main goal is to insert modern 2020's politics. I seriously couldn't believe what a joke this show turned out to be, even with my expectations tempered (drastically) because of Abrams' involvement. If you're a true Batman and DC fan, this show is on the same level of disrespect and character assassination as "SS Kill the Justice League". It tries to use some BTAS-nostalgia, but it fails to understand just WHY that show is so revered. I guess, good on WB for realizing this show was too shitty to release on Max, but really, they shouldn't have even allowed Abrams' to shop it around, cause of course some of the fools at Prime (like Jen Psalke) are gonna want to pick it up. I just can't with this kind of crap anymore. There's really no defending it, it simply shouldn't exist.
I agree 100% we finally get a new animated Batman series and it's nothing more than woke propaganda. It's a total disrespect to real Batman fans. How do you even screw up something that includes some of the most interesting and iconic characters of all time? The only thing I liked about the show was the voice of Batman/Bruce. Hamish did a great job with that. I'm so disappointed after watching just 4 episodes. I'm only gonna finish it because I'm watching it free and since it was created a few years ago (during the pander serge) I'm hoping they'll do some major tuning for a season 2 but I highly doubt it. Still hoping we get a live action Batman series at some point
@@mkdub9600 I would think a proper live action Batman series would be more possible now than ever before with Gunn in charge. WB would certainly want it to be a “prestige series” made for HBO, which isn’t a bad thing, but there will be big waits between seasons (like The Boys). I could see them doing The Brave and The Bold and then spinning off into a Batman & Robin live action show that’s intimately connected to the new DCU. I think Hamish did a pretty good job as the voice of Bruce as well, but I can’t get the idea out of my head that he’s just doing a “Conroy”-impression, not that that’s a bad thing, but it kind of adds to the “parody” feel of Caped Crusader at times. I’m not sure if I’ll finish Caped Crusader, I pretty much made it 4 eps in as well and I think I might need to stop trying to enjoy it like i would a proper Batman show, and I don’t really want to watch a parody of Batman unless it’s Adam West lol. Actually, it’s not even fair to call that Batman a parody compared to things like Caped Crusader, Adam West Bats is just gloriously cheesy, he is to Batman what Roger Moore was to James Bond. Caped Crusader *could* have been such a slam dunk, all they had to do was take the golden age comic stories and convert them to animation, it still would have been very different than the Batman people know from the last 30-40yrs, but what they ended up doing instead was using a thin veneer of the golden age to push more “modern” agenda-based crap. It would be nice if they tried to course correct for season 2, seeing as how it’s already greenlit afaik, and they’ve probably already started writing, maybe even animating it. A lot of times these animated shows deliver 2 full seasons after a greenlight (it’s why total trash like ‘Velma’ didn’t just get cancelled in the middle of its first season).
After your review, I'm willing to give it chance. I haven't been watching anything lately (I still didn't watch Gen V and The Boys S4 yet), but I'll watch Cape Crusader for sure - eventually 😅

Show is terrible literally full of agenda, Montoya chick gets more time on screen than Batman, she gets to the scene before Batman, and even SAVES Batman. Oswald is now OSWALDA (and they are trying to make us believe anyone would find her attractive), Harley is Asian, along with Jim and his daughter being black (Even though Jim was Black in Robert Pattinsons Batman) and They show Barbara more than Jim. Seems like a trend in fucking up all our childhood Memories to me, I'm honestly getting sick of it!!! I say its Time we Cancel this Woke BS OURSELVES PERMANETLY!! I have tried to endure watching it, but it's a stain on the Batmans name now and it's not Pretty!! Not all Heroes wear capes, and I'm here to tell you guys don't even waste your time on this crap!! -10/10 STINKS BAD REAL BAD!!
This show was pretty alright, wasn’t a fan of the CatWoman or Harley changes but other than that it was great. I just wish we got more Batman, GCPD stuff was interesting but Batman feels kinda shafted in his own show.

X-Men 97 is a revival done right. This is a revival done wrong. It makes no sense to do a Batman show set in the 1940s if the writers are not going to be authentic to the time period.
I disagree. The elseworlds things is just a way to make an excuse for the changes. Technically everything is elseworlds that isn’t the main comic. This is simply a Batman cartoon doing things differently to fit the 2024 narrative. Plain and simple.

why do people get worked up about this show and it’s messaging. The first episode was the weakest but I do not think it is because the penguin was gender swapped. it was because the first episode felt like a villain of the week like some lesser renowned episodes of BTAS. The rest of the show is really well done I really liked how cared for most of the reimaginings of the characters were. I don’t think it is remotely important to dwell on characters sexualities and races as long as the story itself is good. And it never is preachy like the suicide squad game it just presents the changes as plain reality rather than hyper focusing on them. the show will never be the animated series and it isn’t trying to be. it’s trying to put batman into unfamiliar territory and making him more of a psychologically troubled character rather than being this indestructible character. I will say though that the penguins change didn’t add much but i don’t think it took anything away but the rest of the characters I find are very well done.
What you're looking to criticize is the production. You have zero idea what quality writing this show offers, because you haven't watched it or read any scripts. I don't like the female Penguin choice either, but to judge the writing of a show based off of one detail about one character is ignorant. If you're gonna whine, at least do it properly.
I watched the first 3 episodes so far, and it was… boring. The worst part is that it’s totally female centric. Batman is just another character that shows up in those female centric mini stories. First episode we follow a very annoying and masculine Barbara Gordon, whom just complains and is disagreeable to everyone around. Second episode we follow Rene Montoya whom is also very masculine in her character, very disagreeable, competitive, nagging. Then 3rd episode we follow Catwoman, whom is also very masculine, sarcastic, nagging, annoying. And Batman just shows up sometimes, and is seen through the lense of those women, like a playboy guy described by yet another annoying masculine woman Harley Quinn, like a playboy whom cannot settle with one woman, that needs to face his trauma by going to therapy (another female obsession)

Now, if they'd said: "We're going to make a Batman series, only Batman's not in it. Tales of Gotham (or some such), where we follow the lives of the extended Bat-family as they go about their days. We'll never see more of Batman than they do. We'll do an episode on Gordon, where we show how this straight-arrow policeman has to handle dealing with a loony who dresses like a bat, but keeps bringing in tips and info that are tearing Gotham's rackets apart. All he ever hears is a voice outside his window: "1:00 a.m. Pier 36, Sloane's bringing in explosives." and the info is always good. Reconciling that he's putting criminals away like never before, but he's basically acting as the Batman's patsy. Bitter pill to swallow, over and over again.
I'd watch that.

Ok dear boba, Batman Caped Crusader needs more Batman and Bruce the side characters feel like they get more screen time then Batman plot is good but Batman needs to be center focused

I was already hyped for this show, now I’m obsessed before even seeing the first episode. And since you and I share very similar interests in what we like in Batman and Batman stories, I’m confident I’ll LOVE this and I cannot wait to see it.
Enjoyed it. Only criticism I have is Gotham does not look distinct enough. It is supposed to be a character itself that cast a shadow on everyone that lives in it. The setting itself could be metropolis and none would be the wiser. Why is Dent talking about urban renewal when the city hall and everything else look posh.
NO POLICE BLIMPS! One of the most charming ideas from BTAS was the introduction of the Police Blimps. I had hoped they were here to stay, as much as Mr. Freeze’s new backstory. Another review mentioned ,”NO POLICE BLIMPS” and the people who have heard are not happy! Grrr! At least there’s a chance of future episodes adopting them.

I think there's gonna be a progression as the seasons go forward. The character development is great, and I think Gotham will continue to be developed. Love the file cabinets in the bat cave no bat computer to solve crimes easy.

I dig the 40's asthetic and design of the characters especially catwoman i'm a sucker for her golden age/silver age costume i also love the batsuit the only thing is that i wish they kept the purple gloves
I really enjoyed your review, and thank you for being so positive about this show as I keep hearing mixed reviews. I love how dark this feels, how much it feels like the 40’s and how they touched on characters and how they were originally created like Clayface for example. From what I’ve heard, Harley in this is how the creator originally wanted her. The voices are great. The only thing I wish they would have done differently is that they could have made the female penguin a completely new character cause I love her character. I don’t care for the gender swap but would love it if she has another son that was shunned that is more the penguin we know like the one in Batman Returns. Other than that, I really enjoyed this show and wish we could have had a lot more episodes.
Nothing will replace Batman TAS as I grew up on it and still enjoy it to this day. But I love how much darker this feels and I love getting the Detective Batman. It’s one of the reasons I loved Matt Reeves The Batman so much!

The Penguin is a very different take but I overall enjoyed the show. Now for season two they just don't need to add so many origins but have more interaction with the known baddies.
The way you described Bruce Wayne/Batman dynamic in this series reminds me of the 2004 series "The Batman". I really enjoyed seeing the Batman side start off cold and slowly loosens up after having gaining his sidekicks. It was a gradual change over the seasons and I'm here for seeing the development of this one.
After watching for myself female penguin was the least of the show's issues. It's tries too hard to be different but also nostalgic at the same time to the point where it really becomes annoying/dumb. Especially the last episode which goes without saying why that's an issue. Female Penguin could get easily explained away if they go the route of killing her off and replacing her with another character but outside of those elements if you don't know a single clue about the characters and want to watch a Batman show it's okay but if you know the lore on the characters you're definitely going to be mad alot.
As someone who grew up on Bruce's Timm's original Batman TAS and is familiar with all the characters, while the swaps are 🙄, I'd say the bigger issue is most definitely the writing. I could forgive the swaps if the writing wasn't so meh. This has less restriction than the original series, yet somehow, it feels more simplistic and overstated compared to the original's more nuanced, unpredictable storytelling. While it's not a bad show, it's just simply not anywhere close to the level of any of Bruce's previous works in the DCAU.

@@JoshSportsMovies Most likely not. Since the DCAU ended, most of his animated works have been pretty mediocre. It's pretty clear he and his team are past their creative prime. From the writing all the way down to the character designs and aesthetics. The artwork looks dated, the dialogue, attention to details and character interactions are all lacking and Bruce Tim doesn't appear to have any new stories to tell with Batman which is partly why these stories feel cliche.
Lastly this isn't Bruce first time writing a show. This season shouldn't have a learning curve as he should already know where he wants to go with it. That's just another sign that his heart isn't in this. None of his other previous shows needed a learning curve and were great right off the bat.

Gender swapping Penguin is SUPER weird! Somebody in the comments compared it to Calender Girl in TNBA but that was totally different. She was really a different character than Calendar Man. Same thing with Copperhead in the Arkham games or the female Ventriloquist in the comics, etc. This is obviously the same character (Oswald Cobblepot) as a woman. Very strange choice and character to choose to do that.
It is, but as its own thing I don't see a reason to be that worked up over it. Jim Gordon was a killer in Gotham by Gaslight.
I think the changes in the series don't fit for the era, but the era perfectly fits Batman so it gets as much of a pass as MAWS from me.
@@handlebarsmustache Gotham by Gaslight is an Elseworlds story. I think people are confused that this is an Elseworlds Batman. This isn't an Elseworlds Batman. It's just set in an earlier time than we usually see Batman. It's set in the time when Batman first premiered in the comics.

It's still more faithful than most Batman adaptations that came before The Batman, if we're being honest (Harley and Penguin changes taken into consideration when saying that). I guess we'll have to see if the changes ruin it completely or if it's just more nitpicky complaints in an otherwise good story I suppose.

Still is super weird and stupid to make Penguin a woman. Kind of insulting to women too really, but I'm not a woman so I'd have to leave women to judge that. Not a very flattering character to turn into a woman though.

The reviews and criticisms about the show being woke are out of whack. I say this as someone who normally doesn’t see the point or need in gender or race swapping characters but this isn’t the show to point to as an example of why you shouldn’t do those things.
The female Penguin I thought was great. Yes it could’ve been done a with a bit more charm or nuance but it presented an interesting angle for “what would this character be like if” and yeah it was still the same dark character just with kids and is a woman but idk I liked it and didn’t feel like it was some embarrassment to the character.
I think the other complaint about it not including Batman that often is for a reason. They had to build an entire universe in 10 episodes. BTAS got damn near 70 (yes the first season is listed with 60-65 episodes). So understand the reason Batman isn’t the complete center piece of each episode is cause they have so much world building to do and sometimes that means other characters take priority in order to have a more cohesive overall universe in the long run. I think season 2 is gunna be insanely Batman centric especially considering he’s gunna be dealing with you know who in season 2 (no spoilers in case you haven’t seen the post credit scene from episode 10 season 1)
All in all I loved the show, felt like it was different enough from BTAS to have its own identity while meeting the standard set by BTAS and other great Batman shows before it. I think we’ve got a lot to be excited about for the future of Batman: Caped Crusader

I saw the series going in with an open minded and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought it had solid writing and character development. I had a hard time adjusting to the new Batman voice though. I guess if I had any complaints it would be sometimes the tech felt a little inconsistent for the time and glosses over much of the would be prejudices for this time period if set in our world’s 1940s. Also, there were lesbian relationships but no gay male relationships which I find disappointing. I have seen some bad faith reviews on the series though. They don’t really seem to have much of an argument other than women are in it.
Is this the one? Is this the version of Batman where he's willing to paralyze the Joker from the neck down? I freakin' hope so!

I really liked the art style and general aesthetic of this show. I personally think it falls flat in terms of the writing, the voice acting, the music, and it generally just doesn't feel like anyone enjoyed making it. It had the potential to be great. Luckily that's just my opinion and hopefully some people will have fun watching it.

BCC was terrible. Has the same troupes as every other woke nonsense out there. The Batman voice is one-toned, no emotion whatsoever.
Finally had time to binge the entire season. We loved it!!! The 40s vibe was fantastic (va va voom Selina - I think I found my Halloween costume for this year!) and we can’t wait for season 2!!!
If Batman Caped Crusader and my adventures with Superman is in the same universe, then by the time superman appears in metropolis, Batman will have his bat family by that point.
Edit: never mind I calculated how much time past between the 1940’s and 2020. Batman will be an old man in my adventures of Superman, if both shows were in the same universe.
I dont like when shows change characters gender and race most of the time but tbh i didnt really mind it too much in this I really enjoyed if for what it was would i perfer a normal penguin and harley yeah but i still liked it anyway tbh.
Doesn't look horrible, I still would have preferred a more strict continuation of the original animated series. To me, this is the safe route where a direct continuation would have been riskier but more desirable, to me at least.

One thing that puzzles me is the extreme and frankly toxic amount of hate it's already getting. Why? That's what I can't understand. If someone has seen it and they don't care for it, that's totally valid. But a lot of people are opining very strongly before watching and I don't get it. I have said before that there is no one definitive take on Batman, not anymore, if ever. If something is not to your taste, move on. But some people conflate their own preferences with whether something is artistically good or bad, and I've never been able to understand that.

I felt this new series is some WOKE garbage, but I'm a die hard TBAS fan and hated seeing them copy the noir style from the old series. Batman now is just another variation of a depressed individual, not at all as investigative as the one we knew. Why did they have to change Penguin into a female (especially when they are making a live action Penguin movie w Colin Ferral - seems counter productive) wasn't there enough female villains (Catwoman/Ivy/Harley)? Couldn't they just had made Female Penguin - Fish? Pennyworth is now some fat balding butler, not at all the ex-british military man, which would make sense to him being Batman's partner. This Pennyworth is like his mom, making sure he's working on a full stomach and telling him to get sleep. Bullock being corrupt now really sucks, before he was unkempt and not a fan of Bats, but he was a more trusted cop. Catwoman's maid - seems to be a stereotype I'm suprised they portrayed....Don't get me started on Bruce Timm, he'll throw batman on any pitch, good or bad these days.

My favorite Superheroes are Batman, Superman and Spider-Man. I think they are the best heroes from the comics and they definitely have the best villians. My favorite TV Show is Smallville and my favorite Movie is The Dark Knight. Superman and Lois is my second favorite TV Show and Scream 1996 is my second favorite movie. Sidney Prescott played by Neve Campbell is a Superhero if you really think about it. She's willing to help others even if she doesn't want to and she always wins. Pluse she won't die all that easy. Just watch Scream 4. So Sidney Prescott has been added to my list with Batman, Superman and Spider-Man. Ghostface would definitely in with Gotham City.

Hi there, prior to the release of Batman Caped Crusader, there was a featurette on TH-cam that established female characters such as Eleonora Fries along with Oswalda Cobblepot. If fries didn't show up in the first season, there's a very good probability that she will show up on the next

Batman: The Animated Series is where my start with Batman. I was born in 1993 and didn't start watching the show until the late 90s to early 2,000's. It defined who Batman really is and that what I like about Bale's and Pattinson's Batmen. They are the closest to Kevin Conroy's Batman, which is what I look for in Batman through live action. Batman: TAS is still one of my favorite animated shows today and it ranks in my top 10 at #7 on my list for top favorite TV Shows of all time. So I'm definitely looking forward to seeing this show on August 1st.

I watched all episodes ,overall I enjoyed it but had several concerns . I know it's a Elseworld version set in the 1930/40 a noir view . But why change several of the charcters,also their sexuality .
But this seems to the current system now by the people in charge of tv,movies books & comics they like to change the legends which upset the purists.
Not as good as the original version ,but worth watching overall I would only give it 7.5 out 10, it was a interesting view . Let's see if they make a second series ,time will tell.

@adamthompson9785 I'm 7 episodes in and they're really nothing special. I don't really care for the Batman voice actor, but then again who can top Conroy? I was around 13 or 14 when BTAS aired on Fox, and I hadn't been excited for cartoons since the days of Masters of the Universe. BTAS for me was Uber top notch, this show however just misses the mark. I don't even mind the female penguin, but it's everything else: the race swapping business for one and lame villians. None of them are really threatening. I'll finish up the season and see how everything unfolds but as of right now I'm not impressed.
@@anthonyjenkins2001 it was the Penguin thing that set my mood. Penguin doesn't do showtunes. The writing was terrible, she murdered her son because her arch rival said so????... What!? And Penguin is so unattractive, yet the guys go wild for her??? The Batman voice was soooo flat, just some guy doing a gruff voice. There was no real difference in the Bruce Wayne performance either. It was a mess!

This show turned out to be an utter farce. It's essentially a "modern day" Batman parody that's not even funny.
Paul Dini wouldn't have allowed this gutless crap to be written, so I guess it's no wonder he has nothing to do with this project, and I honestly question how much Reeves even had to do with it.
This seems more like Bruce Timm, JJ Abrams and a bunch of horrible writers got together to make a show that would piss off anyone who truly loves Batman and his roster of characters.
I mean, opening the show with "Oswalda Cobblepot" is certainly a statement of intent for the rest of the series, not to mention she's an absolutely stupid idea to begin with. That *has* to be one of the laziest gender-swaps I've ever seen, for ANY character.
Also, why is every character drawn to look completely overweight? Renee Montoya doesn't even look like she could walk up the court room steps. Bruce Timm should be fucking embarassed by this. He used to know how to actually draw a woman. Now they all have cankles, with the exception of like, one or two.
The characterization of, well, everyone, is SO SO wrong. They've ruined Harley, or whatever the hell she's supposed to be (cause it's certainly not Harley Quinn). I guess Barbara is salvageable, but isn't it odd that they decided to race-swap her, but still maintain her red hair for some reason?
I keep hearing this show referred to as "darker than B:TAS", but the only thing about it that's actually "darker" than the Paul Dini show is whatever is going on inside the creator's minds. This show is like a really bad acid trip.
Not to mention, setting it in the 30's/40's is utterly senseless if the main goal is to insert modern 2020's politics. I seriously couldn't believe what a joke this show turned out to be, even with my expectations tempered (drastically) because of Abrams' involvement.
If you're a true Batman and DC fan, this show is on the same level of disrespect and character assassination as "SS Kill the Justice League". It tries to use some BTAS-nostalgia, but it fails to understand just WHY that show is so revered.
I guess, good on WB for realizing this show was too shitty to release on Max, but really, they shouldn't have even allowed Abrams' to shop it around, cause of course some of the fools at Prime (like Jen Psalke) are gonna want to pick it up.

I agree 100% we finally get a new animated Batman series and it's nothing more than woke propaganda. It's a total disrespect to real Batman fans. How do you even screw up something that includes some of the most interesting and iconic characters of all time? The only thing I liked about the show was the voice of Batman/Bruce. Hamish did a great job with that. I'm so disappointed after watching just 4 episodes. I'm only gonna finish it because I'm watching it free and since it was created a few years ago (during the pander serge) I'm hoping they'll do some major tuning for a season 2 but I highly doubt it. Still hoping we get a live action Batman series at some point
@@mkdub9600 I would think a proper live action Batman series would be more possible now than ever before with Gunn in charge. WB would certainly want it to be a “prestige series” made for HBO, which isn’t a bad thing, but there will be big waits between seasons (like The Boys). I could see them doing The Brave and The Bold and then spinning off into a Batman & Robin live action show that’s intimately connected to the new DCU.
I think Hamish did a pretty good job as the voice of Bruce as well, but I can’t get the idea out of my head that he’s just doing a “Conroy”-impression, not that that’s a bad thing, but it kind of adds to the “parody” feel of Caped Crusader at times.
I’m not sure if I’ll finish Caped Crusader, I pretty much made it 4 eps in as well and I think I might need to stop trying to enjoy it like i would a proper Batman show, and I don’t really want to watch a parody of Batman unless it’s Adam West lol. Actually, it’s not even fair to call that Batman a parody compared to things like Caped Crusader, Adam West Bats is just gloriously cheesy, he is to Batman what Roger Moore was to James Bond.
Caped Crusader *could* have been such a slam dunk, all they had to do was take the golden age comic stories and convert them to animation, it still would have been very different than the Batman people know from the last 30-40yrs, but what they ended up doing instead was using a thin veneer of the golden age to push more “modern” agenda-based crap.
It would be nice if they tried to course correct for season 2, seeing as how it’s already greenlit afaik, and they’ve probably already started writing, maybe even animating it. A lot of times these animated shows deliver 2 full seasons after a greenlight (it’s why total trash like ‘Velma’ didn’t just get cancelled in the middle of its first season).

I’m very excited for this show I love how they are going back to the Batman, the animated series route but updated and maybe for mature audiences since the original had to be more for kids, I also hope this gets a second season

Show is terrible literally full of agenda, Montoya chick gets more time on screen than Batman, she gets to the scene before Batman, and even SAVES Batman. Oswald is now OSWALDA (and they are trying to make us believe anyone would find her attractive), Harley is Asian, along with Jim and his daughter being black (Even though Jim was Black in Robert Pattinsons Batman) and They show Barbara more than Jim. Seems like a trend in fucking up all our childhood Memories to me, I'm honestly getting sick of it!!! I say its Time we Cancel this Woke BS OURSELVES PERMANETLY!!
I have tried to endure watching it, but it's a stain on the Batmans name now and it's not Pretty!! Not all Heroes wear capes, and I'm here to tell you guys don't even waste your time on this crap!! -10/10 STINKS BAD REAL BAD!!

This show was pretty alright, wasn’t a fan of the CatWoman or Harley changes but other than that it was great. I just wish we got more Batman, GCPD stuff was interesting but Batman feels kinda shafted in his own show.

Often creators who review shows/movies can get screener access for upcoming series in order to do reviews upon embargo lifts, in the same way you may see outlets online write article reviews on a new series - Similar way to how I've reviewed DC movies/shows previously on the channel with no spoiler reviews :)

I disagree. The elseworlds things is just a way to make an excuse for the changes. Technically everything is elseworlds that isn’t the main comic. This is simply a Batman cartoon doing things differently to fit the 2024 narrative. Plain and simple.

@@timsimpson6019every piece of media is a product of its time. Of course it will reflect 2024 propaganda. Btas was a product of its time, so were the comics and so is this. Elseworld stories are allowed to have changes because it’s not canon, plain and simple.
I want to love it but seeing gender swapped Penguin and race swapped Gordon feels weird.
why do people get worked up about this show and it’s messaging. The first episode was the weakest but I do not think it is because the penguin was gender swapped. it was because the first episode felt like a villain of the week like some lesser renowned episodes of BTAS. The rest of the show is really well done I really liked how cared for most of the reimaginings of the characters were. I don’t think it is remotely important to dwell on characters sexualities and races as long as the story itself is good. And it never is preachy like the suicide squad game it just presents the changes as plain reality rather than hyper focusing on them. the show will never be the animated series and it isn’t trying to be. it’s trying to put batman into unfamiliar territory and making him more of a psychologically troubled character rather than being this indestructible character. I will say though that the penguins change didn’t add much but i don’t think it took anything away but the rest of the characters I find are very well done.
I’m glad that Frederik Wiedmann really nailed the show’s score. I’ve been a fan of him since Green Lantern: TAS and Beware the Batman.

What you're looking to criticize is the production. You have zero idea what quality writing this show offers, because you haven't watched it or read any scripts. I don't like the female Penguin choice either, but to judge the writing of a show based off of one detail about one character is ignorant. If you're gonna whine, at least do it properly.
I watched the first 3 episodes so far, and it was… boring. The worst part is that it’s totally female centric. Batman is just another character that shows up in those female centric mini stories. First episode we follow a very annoying and masculine Barbara Gordon, whom just complains and is disagreeable to everyone around. Second episode we follow Rene Montoya whom is also very masculine in her character, very disagreeable, competitive, nagging. Then 3rd episode we follow Catwoman, whom is also very masculine, sarcastic, nagging, annoying. And Batman just shows up sometimes, and is seen through the lense of those women, like a playboy guy described by yet another annoying masculine woman Harley Quinn, like a playboy whom cannot settle with one woman, that needs to face his trauma by going to therapy (another female obsession)
