    Thank you LA Moto, what a fun bike, and a great way to kick off the weekend. I will be getting my hands on one of these in the near future and hitting the open road for a camping trip this Spring/Summer.
    As always, thanks for watching. Please like, comment, and subscribe.

    I live in Alaska and bought a winter camo Gear-Up last year. I have only had one problem with it, the main wire harness had a loose wire, and had to be replaced (under warranty). Other than that, this has been an excellent purchase. $17k and some change, with luggage rack, spotlight and some other extras.
    This is a year-round bike. I have only gotten in my Bronco a couple of times since I purchased it, and then only to move a bunch of oversized crap, and when it was down for the wire harness. I put Heidenau K37 winter tires on it, and studded all three for the snow and ice.
    I highly recommend you install a battery tender on it. My hack sits outside, but starts everyday, even when below zero.
    All in all, I am super happy with my ride. Who needs a snowmachine, when you can ride to and from work everyday on one of these?

    "I disagree it's a dual sport" .. do a video search on Ural's quality testing. They test rode it on the bumpiest rocky terrain I've ever seen. It actually does better than dirt bikes because the sidecar gives it a really unique ability to stay upright.

  • @VeeFour
    @VeeFour 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    growing up in the UK in the 70s, motorcycle combinations (to use the correct term for a side car) were quite common, and it wasn't unusual to see a whole family on them as they were loads cheaper than a car.
    I saw one of these Urals parked up in Santander in Spain, and just was surprised to see that there is a drive shaft from the gearbox to the side car wheel as well. Pretty cool.

    • @DukeOfDC
      @DukeOfDC  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +VeeFour I wonder why they've become less popular with other manufactures. I imagine as the public moves towards more performance focused interests, the niche that is having a sidecar fades away. The driveshaft connection system is extremely cool.

    • @VeeFour
      @VeeFour 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +DukeOfDC I think that in the UK the cost of owning a car has dropped considerably over the last 3 decades, and side cars bolted to the side of Honda CB750'S were the only option for some families back then. With the weather in the UK, life in a sidecar would be a miserable affair in winter.
      I maybe wrong, but I think the Ural is the only ready made combination available for sale, and back in the 70's you either built your own conversion or paid someone to convert it for you. you never saw two the same

    • @DukeOfDC
      @DukeOfDC  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +VeeFour Interesting - Yeah, these bikes new are actually really expensive, and although you get a cool bike, the stuff that comes with it just doesn't add up to the price. Other than Urals, I've only seen old R model BMWs with sidecars on the used bike sites. Would be great to own one some day, but funny enough, just not practical right now.

    Great video, I've been looking at these for a while - the model I'm looking at has 2 wheel drive - the sidecar wheel is driven for use in very rough conditions. Maybe that's why they're suggested as dual sports, 2 wheel drive would definitely add to the off road capabilities.

    • @DukeOfDC
      @DukeOfDC  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +IanDinBC Yeah, when I first saw this one I thought it was also a 2WD model, but apparently this was a model from 2009. The 2WD would definitely help, but it's still just so heavy that I imagine things could get tricky rather quickly.

    Hello, you mentioned that you mostly relied upon the front brake. Later you mentioned better brakes need to be addressed. Does that mean that you began using the rear brakes in addition to the front brake? You do realize that there are two rear wheels each with its own brake. If you only use the front brake, you are neglecting quite a bit of stopping power. As an aside I was taught to always apply rear brake then the front brake, or during high-speed, quick action braking then apply front and rear brakes simultaneously.

I own a BMW K1200 LT, and I am seriously toying with the idea of fitting a sidecar to it. My Wife is Blind, and because of that, wont get on the back of the BMW, despite it being a virtual armchair? I have ridden a Sidecar outfit once years ago, and enjoyed it. I have also ridden and thought about buying a Can Am, but think that fitting a chair to the BMW is likely a better option? I note the Ural isn't fitted with a Leading Link Front End, which I can only put down to the rake of the front forks? Thank You for posting what is a very interesting video.

    Motorcycles with sidecars were a common sight on the roads of Britain in the 50's and 60's. I used to ride solo machines backin the 1970's, and one thing that struck me was, how does one repair a flat tyre on a sidecar outfit? I notice the Ural carries a spare wheel but wouldn't you need a jack to get the offending wheel off the ground to fix the tyre?

    The dual sport concept is for the 2 wheel drive models. The sidecar wheel is powered along with the rear, so it can negotiate some dirt roads fairly well. And yeah, its pricey for yesterday's technology and legendary Soviet quality. But it is unique and fun. Maybe the price makes more sense if you look at it as dollars per pound...

    You kept mentioning brakes being poor, but also say you didn't really use the rear brakes as the front seemed to be doing the work. On a ural, the rear brakes control rear tire and sidecar tire and most braking force comes from them rather than the front brake, complete opposite of a regular motorcycle. When riding mine, I primarily use the rear brake and really only use the front in a quick stop situation. This is still a heavy machine and even with discs all around, it cannot, nor is intended to be ridden like a nimble sport bike.

    • @DukeOfDC
      @DukeOfDC  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This explains a lot. See on a standard motorcycle, as you know, 70% of the braking force comes from the front, and that was just burned into my brain. I did not think about the rear brake operating the sidecar wheel.

      +ten thousand Totally agree with you. This was a Tourist model from a few years ago so it didn't have the 2WD feature, or some I was told. It would be extremely difficult to take this on anything more than a light fire trail though. It's just so heavy lol

    on your dual sport comment, with the tourist you have yep would be a problem off road. but the other model is a 2wd, where the sidecar wheel can lock to the rear wheel. so off road can be lots of fun. all the looks you are getting is called UDF, Ural Delay Factor. when you stop for gas or somewhere you will get stopped by people with questions.
    looks like you have the 2013, same as me. in 2014 they move up to EFI rather than the Japanese carbs and also disk breaks all around. so better stopping than the disk up front and drum on back and the hack.
    tons of fun, take the kids to school, make a run to home depot and come back with the sidecar loaded up. also take the right hand turn and let the side car rise up, called flying the chair. like sailing with a two hull boat.

    In the Philippines we have sidecars too but the motorcycle is built to be very economical
    typically tricycles here have a 150cc OHC Carburetor engine , 5-speed
    has about 12hp and 12nm of torque
    but typical tricycles here can pull massive weight like 500kg of cargo like rice bags, bamboos. and stuff but most tricycles are like taxis or tuk tuks
    it can carry about 5 people or even 7
    speed is about 80kph, and the acceleration is rubbish..well speed here doesn't matter because of the mountainous roads and traffics
    you can go up to 100km in just 2L of gas

    The Ural is a derivative if the WWII German BMW. It started out as part of the Russian/German non aggression pact, specifically the economic & technology exchange which was one sided. During the war, the German military had a machine gun installed on the sidecar. The Russian military still uses the Ural.

      DukeOfDC While i was in Northern Iraq back in 2007.I saw a Ural Recon motorcycle with a side car that mounted a PKM machinegun.From what it looked like to me was a Saddam era Soviet made Ural supplied to his army back in the 1980s.This bike was kept in great shape.When i got back home i really thought about getting one.I did not know for a while that Ural bikes had been in this country.I wanted was a Chinese military repro or surplus copy of the BMWs that the Germans had in WWII.I found out how much of a pain in the ass getting one of those things into the country and parts.It was 3 years ago i ran into a guy at a Del Taco here in Vegas that he rode on.I asked him where he got his?He said he bought his in Oregon and these Russian bikes were available in the US.Then i got hit by the IRS for a bill almost $7500.00 for the stocks i sold.I am still working on getting that money back because that was my chunk to put down on one.I do like the color of your bike,for me i want one in desert tan.Soon as i get settled on the money part then my dream will come true..

    Hi Duke. There a couple of different stories behind the origin of the Ural. This is the most probable of the stories I have heard. Back in 1939 the Germans and Russians signed a non aggression pack to appease any hostilities in the near future. Sometime in 1940 they must had some sort of tech swap. Part of what the Germans gave the Russians was the plans and more than likely the dies for the R71 BMW as they had already replaced the R71 with the R75. The Russians started making their version somewhere around Moscow. A year and a half later Germany invades and get to the gates of Moscow. The Russians move about 1900 factories far to the east that would put them out of bomber range. This factory ended up in a little town called Irbit on the east side of the Ural mountain range and henceforth the name it has today. It remained a military bike for a couple of decades after the war before being produced for the general public. I believe they still may sell a military version as I found this demo clip ( th-cam.com/video/dN5PAwc1ns8/w-d-xo.html ) on you tube were you can get some rather interesting accessories. Looks like your girl friend could have used one or two of them on a couple of cars LOL. It's a lot of fun to drive and it's like a parade when I put my dog Mr. Banana Pants in the sidecar with his Doggles on. PS Yes you can get a machine gun mount.

      I definitely wouldn't pay 25K for it. I'm Scottish 😉 There are numerous pictures of the Soviets using their version of the R71 in WWII. I don't think anyone knows exactly how the Ural ended up in Irbit as the Russians were very tight lipped. I actually read somewhere that there were 3 factories. One made the motorcycle and one made the sidecar. A third one made the motorcycle and sidecar which is believed to be the one that was moved to Irbit. But I think there is no info out there on the exact process. Maybe someone should ask Mr. Putin 😉

    • @B_...
      @B_... 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Theodore Marakas Sounds like a nice bike. My orginal thought was to buy a WLC and I did find a nice one in England for let's say 25K and change. It interested me as my uncle who had just past away used to ride one in WWII. But I thought because it's a piece of history you shouldn't really ride it a lot and you definitely couldn't park it anywhere with out it disappearing. So I have a Ural with a machine gun mount that I'm enjoying.

    Also, it is equally comfortable off road. Even the 1wd. Nit to nitpick but if you are reviewing a bike you shouldn't just guess. Ive owned my 2014gu for alkost 2 years and its my daily driver.

      When I got there, I realized that this was not the model or model year that I had done my research on. It wasn't a guess, but my personal opinion that at the weight and sheer size it would be troubling off road. To me off road is single track stuff, so that's where we must differ. Thanks for the input though! Always appreciate an owners remarks.

    From what I understand, the rear brake also operates the outside wheel brake. You said you weren't really using the rear brake and that the brakes felt underpowered. 730+lbs is still gonna need some room to stop but do you think the brakes would have felt more adequate when braking all three wheels?

    • @DukeOfDC
      @DukeOfDC  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Eledor9 I was using the rear brake, just not when I was in stop and go traffic in GT, but you're right, the rear brake operated the sidecar wheel as well. I still think that it needs more braking power up front. Maybe a second disc and another brembo setup.
