  • Two men, one Ural sidecar, and a nonstop, 32-hour, record-breaking ride from Seattle to Los Angeles. For no good reason whatsoever. No getting off the bike, rider swaps at speed, and no stopping for anything but traffic.

Sometimes biking is not about having 3 more hp, not about speed, not about bluetooth and computers, not about looking stylish at the local Starbucks. Sometimes its just about pure fun and adventure.

The newbies got an endurance education. I was probably the same age as the young one when I learned the same thing, just hop on and go. Pain, keep going... pain stops, you had better stop.
My longest 24 hour distance fell short of my goal of 1500 miles but it certainly wasn't on a 750cc sidecar rig, respect there.

I remember building a model of a German WWII Military Sidecar rig. It had ports off the exhaust that lead to the covered handgrips, exits in front of both driver's feet, and another that ran through a radiator in the floorboard of the hack before exiting out the side. Progress is sometimes subjective.

I have have not tried a long distance run in the cold snowy wet weather in the open air day and night to prove it can be done. You both can place Three (3) Gold Stars in your log book! You folks at Cycle World gave this story the proper name " The Unnecessary Express" preformed without a bathroom break dressed in a Orange jumpsuit. I will omit this from my "To DO List" I will have to admitted to riding in Four (4) different types of sidecar rigs. The First a 2013 Ural painted in modified winter camouflage, the head-shake when accelerating is a handful, the gear box grinds and poor brakes were cause for my returning it well before the test ride was over only after a ride around the block. Number Two a Harley Davidson CVO painted in matching colors with reverse built by Hannigan Motorsports of South Murray, KY, Very well built and out standing looking. I did not care for the steps to place the transmission in reverse nor the heat form the CVO motor. Number three 2018 Honda Goldwing with DCT transmission plus reverse with a Champion Avenger Sidecar fitted with a door. This is the cat's meow of all the rigs I have ridden. Last Triumph Bonneville T100 gloss black with a gloss black Velorex 563 sidecar replaced the TALL windshield for a 7 inch tall one on the Velorex 563 and use the tonneau cover all to reduce wind drag and increase performance. The stock Velorex with the T100 only runs out at about 60 mph. After removing the "Tall" Velorex windshield and replacing it with a "Low" windshield, this set-up improves highway speed to 70 mph plus. There is a control issue in any of the twisting roads paved or dirt. Weight about 90 lbs. has been placed over the car axle to keep the chair on the surface. The Honda Goldwing with the seven (7) speed DCT takes all that stress out of managing twisting back country roads. Should you run a tonneau without an windshield in the rain expect to collect water in the car.

Here in Russia in soviet period Ural was one of cheapest rural vehicles witch could be used to ride with whole family (two adults on the bike and couple of childs in a sidecar). But when USSR got failed. Cars got cheaper and most soviet Urals has been sent to a metal scrap. Nowadays it still used only by some fans.
I've grown up in the village in 90th and old styled Ural is a part of my warm childhood memories. Sometime i wanna find and buy soviet version Ural ИМЗ-8.103.10, same that my dad had 25 yers ago, recover it to "new" condition and ride on it just for fun. In Russia used old Ural in good condition and with registration costs about 600-800$ and recover (engine rebuild, repaint, replace tires and sidecar cover, replace ingnition system, carburators and alternator on modern ones, etc) can cost about 1500-2000$
It in no so big price for Ural, i guess.

I've had a soviet Ural ИМЗ-8.103-10 1987y with carburators. It didn't had a fuel light, bu had a fuel valve on the tank with two work positions: "Open" and "Reserve" (handle turns into opposite direction). It works very simple: when you feel that fuel is over, you just turn fuel valve into "Reserve" position then have extra 3-4 liters of gasoline to reach a gas station. Simple and really reliable system. Same valve was installed on all soviet motorcycles.

Before this, I watched a review of the Triumph Tiger 800xrx. The guy wanted to change Rider Modes. He said, "I'll have to go into the menu". Modern Shit Biking summed up in one phrase.

RING A DING DING! CONTINUITY ERROR!
7:12 shows you driving through Eureka CA, but then shows you crossing the border into California at 7:31
    Otherwise, great video.

Oh gosh! I hope you had a MedEvac-plane above you and the national guard on standby if you hit heavy traffic..... Guys! Your ride an Ural with a boat. Heated jackets? Full Jerrycans handed to you? A van with a camera crew besides you? You must be joking....
