  • Our long-term resident 1948 grey Fergie tractor's engine hasn't run in a long time, so the question is - will it start? Being a fairly early Ferguson TE20 (actually TEA20, with the four-cylinder Standard petrol engine) it is petrol only, rather than petrol/TVO or diesel, so persuading this classic tractor to start up is identical to the procedure employed on old cars when they don't want to run, although the method of starting its engine using the gearlever is a neat detail.
    If you're also a fan of classic tractors, little grey Fergie tractors in particular, please say hello in the comments. Do you have one under restoration? Perhaps you own a later Massey Ferguson?
    Our Fergie leads an easy life although has been pressed into service whenever I need to move something large and non-running, its tight steering lock and manoeuvrability being particular useful. I can see why farmers bought Ferguson tractors in their droves when they were introduced, making them a very popular choice with fans of classic tractors everywhere. Back in the day my great uncle in mid-Wales worked at a tractor sales and service workshop, regularly tending to these old agricultural gems.
    While this is primarily a classic & vintage road vehicle channel (see the homepage for all the videos now on here: th-cam.com/channels/KaT.html..., I thought it'd be fun to feature the old grey Fergie properly, as until now it's always appeared in the background of other vids only.

    Alot of plus points preserving a tractor than a car,minimal bodywork, no windows/rubbers or much upholstery to worry about!Great bit of heritage to have, especially if you have a bit of ground to use it on.Great to see!🙂👍

    I have a 1951 Ferguson TO20 that I completely over hauled in 2013 (spent over $5500 in parts and tires.). When I overhauled the engine I was concerned because I could not get more than 25 lbs of oil pressure. I called a bunch of good old boys who run a good sized Agricultural parts business and the owner told me 25 lbs was fine and that the old Fergusons never ran high oil pressure, and 25 lbs is about standard. I have run it plowing snow and other farmette chores and had no problems. I never found a tractor that could beat a Ferguson (or Ford 8N) that could plow up to 9 inches of snow. There is something about the weight distribution on the tractor, height, and weight that is great. I filled the tires with fluid and run chains on the rear tires and plow in the foothills of our subdivision in West Virginia. I tell everybody that I have $5500 in a $1500 tractor, but it performs excellently.

    What memories this brings back. As a hound boy growing up in northern Alberta Canada in the 40s & 50s Dad bought a new fergie as it was referred to. It was a tea 20 ! Was a wonderful tractor. 👍🌹

    Clean and keep clean the outside of the distributor cap, coil and plug leads. The electrical losses through any grime and crud are huge, especially in damp weather conditions.

      Indeed, I remember a (then) modern car of mine that had a misfire, being lit up like a Christmas tree under the bonnet with arcing around a dirty ignition coil

    What a great little tractor. As a young boy in the 60s I used to plough with on of those for pocket money. I had to crank start it - it was easy and it usually started first time ... just set the throttle and away it would go.

    Hi Richard - This is Brian M from OCC. My 10 year old Grandson (Hector) has just become the proud owner of a 1950 TED20 which he is giving a good going over before trying to start it. Old classic vehicles must be in our family genes. His father (my son) got his first classic car (A Standard Pennant) when he was 14!)

    I learned to drive on a grey Fergie (petrol) in the 1950s. The old man's car was a '49 Standard Vanguard with the diesel engine (0-60 took about a week!).

    According to the Harry Ferguson service manual if you have15 pounds oil pressure at idle and a warmed up engine ,your engine is in good shape .nice tractor. ...I have a 48 TE 20 made in Coventry and I love it .I am in Arkansas in The USA and feel connected with y'all over there some how.

    I still have a resting 1950 TO30 here in Canada I used to collect firewood on my property with. It was a great little flat-land tractor.

      One other thing to check (which I think is occurring with mine at the moment). You might have a spark at the points, but on rare occasions you might find that the spring-loaded contact brush in the centre of the distributor cap, works its way up into the cap over time when the spring weakens, and loses contact with the rotor arm. So check to see if you have a spark at the points, and also getting as far as the plugs. Sometimes pulling the centre brush down gently is enough to restore the connection with the rotor arm and therefore the HT leads and plugs.

    My first drive....1963 in the Waikato, New Zealand. Nearly backed the bugger into a ditch, and could of ended my less than stellar career upside down in a hole.. Rather glad that the Fergie sort of knew what to do.....

    We have a small family farm with 1 modern newholland tractor and 2 old classic tractors.
    A fordson major and a petrol tvo fergie.
    Modern tractors are great but the old classics can still put in a good days work and normally at a far cheaper cost.

    I paid $3000 USD to have the top end rebuilt on a TO30 that had an extensive 'blue smoke' problem when I started it and continuously during running'. The rebuild solved the 'smoking problem. I then proceeded to fix some other additional superfluous minor problems. But now I am discovering other needed less serious problems which I think the 'rebuiler should have addressed, Visa-vea - leaving the fuel tank all but empty, ( so that it Ran out in the yard with-in Five minutes of restatrting the tractor off of the return trailer, Leaving a NEW tire to go flat by the next morning etc. i WOULD NOT HAVE LEFT THESE LOOSE ENDS FOR MY CUSTOMERS TO FIND. I had an, "END OF TASK", list to finish every job. I had and followed this procedure for every job finish. THANKS FOR YOUR THOUROUGHNESS. And for letting me share my experience. " I WILL NOT EVER GO BACK to this FURGUSON dealer at 114 Hargett St. in Richlands No. Car. "

    My father was very friendly with the sales director of Ferguson! Often sent hours at their hours playing Scalextric! 😂🤣 And I've driven and used a petrol, a diesel and the TVO versions on may a farm in West Wales during my childhood! 👌👍

    Just stumbled across this video 🙂 nice early TEA20 with a straight oil filter, I have a 1948 TEA still in regular use, a TEF, TED used for paddock topping and just recommissioning and tidying up a 1947 TE20 with continental engine, safe to say I'm a bit of an enthusiast 🙂

    That's an interesting starting arrangement with the gearlever, guess it makes it much more robust and less to go wrong. Looking at the layout of the fuel line, could they not have mounted this all together on the off-side, seems overly convoluted! Great to see the tractor, thanks for sharing!

    I have a TE20 and a TO20, love them both. i enjoy just driving them around, with a Hupp dual drive on the TO20 I fly down the road as fast as I dare with the rocks and holes in the dirt. to me the Fergusons embodied the old cars of a decade or two past, slanted ribbed grills, headlights mounted on the sides. makes me feel like I am piloting an old roadster :P

    Some versions had a button on the right side of the gearbox which you had to hold in with your right leg, while also having to depress the clutch fully. prevented youngsters from being able to start them!

      I’m pretty sure that was just the diesels. They had no ignition key like the petrols and TVOs, so it seemed like they added that button as a kind of interlock, in lieu of a key. It was a bit of a learning to get the side of your leg pushing in the button, while you cranked and maybe also operated the valve/decompression lever on a cold morning! You could be very busy with all limbs on a frosty morning !

      You are correct. It’s only the TEFs that have the button on the right hand side beside the gearshift as they didn’t have an ignition system like the petrol and TVO.😊

    Nice Fergie video. We've had our TEA 20 for around 20 years and over that time have been over most of it. However, a few years ago, I fitted an Acuspark electronic ignition system - absolutely fantastic. I guess some of the purists won't agree, but it looks exactly the same.

    The little grey Fergie was the first tractor the local farmer allowed me to drive. I was 13 or 14 in Kent. I helped out on the farm occasionally and usually towed a wagon stacked with apple boxes. His other tractor was a cumbersome Fordson Major which had to be started with a crank handle. This was wickedly dangerous, as the engine could kick back and fracture your thumb if you didn't know.

    The little grey Fergie's, they feed many a nation, first tractor for a lot of people, many still going strong in Australia, so simple and basic , yet they work hard. Love working tricks, tractors and boats.

    The engine was designed and developed for the tractor and then used in various Standard/ Triumph vehiicles.

      Later I had a Standard Vanguard, a veritable whale on wheels, and the engine in that could have had the same or similar engine that was installed in the tractor. The Vanguard engine had wet cylinder liners.

    I drove a lot of these tractors in my time and I had to push a big brass button on the left hand side with my heel in order to make it start and when you bought a new fergie you only got one spanner with it as both ends of the spanner fitted all the bolts and nuts on the whole tractor so you only needed one spanner, also a grease gun, just thought you would like to know. I loved these tractors. 👍👍👍😁

    Tip: I have resolved many ignition problems by turning over or starting in a dark shed and looking for sparks.even an aparently good engine is worth checking out.it may help avoid future problems.

      I used one of the old fashioned neon strobe lights to check for HT going to the plugs.
      I've even seen transparent dizzy caps so you can see what's going on inside them.

    Great tractor and nice work getting it started. Just one question. Why does the plate say TEA30 something? I've never seen a TEA20 with that plate.

      TEA is the model ( “Tractor England” with the Standard petrol engine) and followed by the serial / production number. They never said TE20 anywhere on the plate, as I recall.

    Hi don,t worry about the oil pressure if you get 20 to 30 psi at hot idle thats more than enough.

      I really need to try a different gauge on it, the reading drops right right down once warmed up ....

      @@oldclassiccarUK mines is the same. Drops to zero and coughs up to about 10-15 with revs when hot. No knocking so first try will be sump off and new oil pump shaft and rotor (can’t get the whole pump housing it seems). Plus machine the end plate flat removing the Wear marks.
      Hopefully that works. If not then it’s a rebuild. 🙄

    These little gems are known as Vaaljapie's in South Africa. Just about every farm will have one running or not. They have a fanatical fan base here, every true South African knows what a Vaaljapie is. "Vaaljapie" - A rough cheap new wine produced privately on wine farms. Every smallholder wants a Vaaljapie.

    Mind your starter....its probably a 6v running on 12v battery you could overheat. Great work paint looks great.....my starter is gone....not going to be easy....6 volts !!!

      @@desfarrell5630 Same. The cone at the top of mine. Where the spindle sits was was gone oval. Got brass Bush made on lathe made. But I'm almost sure you can get new 6v starter from UK.

    I wasn't able to see.. but I'm assuming it's positive earth.. judging from the dynamo.... but some people switch it over to negative earth.

    I have recently been to view a TEA20 for sale. Its a genuine machine with straight honest vendors. My only concern was that it smells like it is running very hot. There is no temperature gauge. Do these petrol engined TEA20 with underslung exhaust always smell hot and oily ?

      I guess they'll all smell a bit as you're exposed to all the mechanicals unlike in a car, if it's running hot you'll hear the coolant bubbling away and you might get steam out of the back if the head gasket is starting to let go due to excess heat. But if it only smells hot and the rad core feels uniformly warm across it (engine off before checking!!) then there's probably not much wrong

    I have the same tractor and it has been changed to 12 volt. Ran good last year, can not get fire to distributor now?

      If there's no spark at the points then maybe they need a gentle clean, or the coil has packed up? I would check the points first as they can corrode enough to prevent a spark.

    Looking good on a nice day, try 12 hours in the field, no cab filling gloves with exhaust gas to keep warm, like being tied to a cross in summer bailing straw,, the bad old days, give me a fendt challenger with air con and GPS any day,

    I would suggest to add lead substitute fuel additive treadement unleaded petrol.. I tend to use Redex or Wynns... I'm unable to find leaded petrol now. I have petrol, TVO and a diesel... The TVO does still works well but I never use paraffin... too expesive now!!..

      The tractor gets almost zero use though so it's not going to suffer using straight unleaded, I've never used an additive in anything old but then again I don't give anything old a hard time or pile on the mileage.

    What electrics are you running?
    Looks like a 6v starter but 12v battery.
    They're obliging little fellows. Mine is running on 6v in the clips I've posted.

      It's always been on 12 since I've had it, should it be on 6? I've not researched it in great depth to be honest

      For a '47/48, Yes it should be 6v unless converted to 12v
      But your starter and dynamo both look like they're still the original 6v components.
      If he has been converted to 12v, he'd certainly have an alternator fitted.

      @@09amusement Thought they had 2 6-volt batteries, one either side of the driver seat. Or was that just the diesels ? We had two TEF20 diesels, and they had originally been double 6Volt - and both were converted to one 12V battery ( as most were). Certainly no alternators on them. My cousin had a TVO, which could be a real tricky customer sometimes when starting! Memory hazy at this remove, but thought it was 12 V ( 2 x 6) as well.

    Nice tractor. Why wouldn't it start with a good battery unless it was stored with ethanol in the petrol. Or you had a rodent issue.
