Reid, I was an aircraft mechanic for 20+ years and very seldom used gloves except with the harshest chemicals (MEK & Toluene). Handled lots of oils and fuels w/o gloves over the years. Long story short, got cancer and survived, and I know others who did the same thing with same results. For your sake and others, it isn't too late to use gloves!

For one thing, Reid is not based in Illinois. He is from Illinois but has been in Tennessee for quite a few years now. Even if he were still in Illinois, he is only one man, like all of us, vs a whole liberal mega-city like Chicago and dozens of smaller liberal cities.
Reid teaches people how to shoot and shoot well via his school and his many videos. His cleaning and maintenance videos are very helpful. He expresses logic about the folly of gun control and causes people to think about the very real probability that we will eventually have to think about things our forefathers did. We have collectively been brainwashed into believing the only way to change things is via the ballot box, a concept that has been increasingly corrupted for decades.

The Facebook ad that gets me is the one selling "Military grade gun cleaner spray " In the Marines, in the 70's, we didn't have anything like that. We took our weapon into a hot shower with us and then cleaned it. No special cleaners at all. No gloves either. Just hot water and a bottle of bore cleaner.

I started polish sanding the high friction parts on new guns to mimic breaking them in, and it has proven to be worth it. Nothing drastic, but just some of sharp machined edges and ramps.
I had purchased 2 identical handguns. One for carry, the other for home. I was running the carry gun all the time and it slowly broke in and found its groove nicely, while the other stayed factory stiff. I polished the parts on that one and got it to running just like the other, and thats what started that protocol for me.

I am also an aircraft mechanic like Chieflywaze and we pride ourselves on doing things by the book. The company had a great safety poster to drive the point home about toxic chemical exposure. The poster said: "This is what your hand looks like to toxic chemicals." And it was a picture of a sponge in the shape of a hand. I've been wearing gloves at work every day since.

    • @ChatGPT1111

I'm a mechanic, 33 years now. I don't generally wear bitch mittens (latex gloves), Except when handling certain chemicals. PAG oil (air conditioning oil) causes testicular cancer, and brake fluid, that "warm" sensation, is your skin absorbing it. Yeah, there are times where gloves are a good idea...

I like the scrubbing with solvent and rinsing clean with your average can of break parts cleaner. It works good, clean rinses fast and air drys quickly. Then I generously lube and shake off excess. Light coat in barrel and your good to go.

Good advice about a new firearm. Just be sure when you put it together that you don't pinch/bend the plunger spring when you put the buffer retaining plunger assy. back in the tube. It's easy to do and will cause an issue right away and you'll be scratching your head.
Like the chemicals when you're young, love the leukemia when you're old. Take it from me. 😉 Mt time with them as a munitions systems specialist TDYs to the machine shop = a marrow transplant. Doesn't happen to everyone but it's a hell of a game of roulette.

James Smullins I use the same, it’s like $3 from Walmart for a can that I’ll never kill off. The key is to avoid just slathering it on. I only grease up the rails on the BCG that are actually contacting anything, and a thin, very thin coat on the bolt and cam pin. I use the excess on the buffer spring. A bit of CLP on the trigger and hammer pins, and it’s good to go.

I just purchased a AR556 ( AR-15) went to my favorite gun range where they have different classes so I took the one for basic AR-15 maintenance the instructor was explaining to me Rugars especially has a factory solution on the new rifles that at first makes it difficult to assemble certain parts ,, so it really needs to be clean & lubricated & fired ASAP to literally break it in.

If you’re really comfortable, removing the barrel to ensure some grease/anti seize on the barrel and upper receiver where it attaches is imperative if you ever plan on replacing the barrel, free floating Handguards, etc

She'll run dirty, but she won't run dry. FACTS watch Vickers Tactical, LAV says wetter is better. He even did a video where he completely saturated an AR in oil, then fired it. He ended up wearing a lot of oil but he was trying to prove a point, don't run 'em dry ! Better to have too much lube than not enough. If a Delta operator says so, listen.

This one has the a2 front post I've got the carry handle on it blah blah blah blah blah. Everything that you did I have done with the exception of lubricating the buffer spring. I got so annoyed every time I would hear that grinding sound. I just did the exact same thing you did I squirted a bunch of lubricant right into my palm got it all over that spring and now that grinding sound is gone. Thank you again. Stay safe and God bless.
