If you have the money though, buying the parts you want to build the rifle from the ground up is certainly the way you want to go.
Just fyi there are some mildly toxic chemicals in the original hoppes No. 9. There's lots of youtube videos about it. But do whatever works for you, just wanted you to have that information.
I was aware of the original Hoopes No 9 toxic formula but they also make a non toxic version of Hoppes No 9. I have and use both. The newer stuff works almost as well, but when you really need to clean a stubborn bore the original formula is still best. I use the new stuff about 98% of the time now.
I keep a bottle of Hoppes for normal cleaning, but noticed that Kerosene is the main ingredient. When getting the cosmo off milsurps, I soak all the metal parts in a tub of Kerosene since a gallon of that is much cheaper than the several bottles of Hoppes I would need.
I was imprinted early as my dad cleaned his shotgun with Hoppes No. 9. I still use Hoppes along with several others depending on what I am cleaning and it always brings back good memories of my Dad.

1st it was a cheap ar deltron. Then the bushmaster then the Colt Now its the DD V7 Pro. And that 150.00 scope that was good enough now is the $1000 vortex. lol... Yep im broke.
With a .223/ 5.56 NATO rifle, ditch the cleaning rod. Cut a piece of .095 string trimmer line about 12" longer than your barrel. Sharpen one end with a knife and heat/melt the other end into a ball (tad smaller than.22 cal) . Use the sharp end to puncture cloth/flannel .22 patches and pull these patches through the bore. A few drops of solvent add to the patch followed up with a bore snake gets the bore nice and clean. This works well on all my .22 cal rifles.
I had repeated failures on a AR when I was out shooting. I gave up and said it done I’m going to take it home and see what’s going on. I dropped the mag cycled it a few times and thought I’m clear. I took it home and when I took it out to clean it and look it over I noticed a round stuck in the chamber still. I got it out and realized it was a live round. I found a broken extractor. I realized then why it’s so important to actually look in the chamber or even feel and not just assume it’s empty. Things go wrong and in this case luckily I never pointed at anyone or pulled the trigger or anything.

As someone who just ordered a non NFA firearm built off the extar exp 556, thanks for the video. Basically the same parts and function, just with a cut down AR BCG modified for side charging and a recoil spring without a buffer tube. Now I can strip it down and clean it quickly once it's done being built so I can get to shooting!
Hey Reid, thanks for all your great videos! I've specifically been looking for a video like this. I run one of my ar's suppressed and after a hundred or so rounds I had a problem with the bolt carrier not completing the cycle. I was mainly using oil. I've started using more grease on the bolt carrier and haven't had a problem. Thanks again and God Bless you!!!

excellent video on cleaning any AR style rifle. One suggestion to anyone reading this, use the Hoppe's #9 patches during cleaning until they no-longer show any solvent. At that point you have a clean part. At that point, you can start wiping the part with a clean pad. I do this with each and every firearm and have never had a misfire due to the firearm...EVER!
What I usually do is what you do with the HOPPEs #9, with an AP Brush and patches, however I use brake cleaner blasting it all off, then relubricate with 3 n 1 oil, it works just as well as the others and unlike CLP doesn't leave an odor. Oh yeah, "Semper Fi!" brotherman. Welcome home.
I was taught to always clean and relube a new firearm. Many of the oils on a brand new firearm are preservatives only and provide no ware protection at all. Good job and advice Reid !! We'll keep ya.

I’m a colt certified armorer... pretty good video. I’d wipe/ rub most of that grease off too. Civilians won’t have much issue but police (me) and military might have problems...

For any newbies with a Ruger AR556 (such as myself) the charging handle WILL NOT just "slide right in" upon reassembly. There are two bumps along the sides, towards the front of the handle, that prevent its insertion. However, there are two corresponding indentations inside the chamber that accommodate those bumps, so what you have to do is tilt the charging handle's two bumps up first, nudge it forward towards those two indentations, then drop it down into those two indentations. THEN it will slide in easily. Otherwise, it's an effort in futility.

I love that every single AR I was handed was not in the safe position, I cleared and verified every one before I looked down the sights, I also Cleared and made sure they were safe before handing them back to anybody else, bolt locked back and visually verifying with conformation from the person you are handing it to.

hey, question. why would you take off the factory grease and then relubricate the gun? couldn't you wait until the gun gets dirty to regrease it? I thought guns need to be lubricated
Always a good idea to full strip, clean, and lube a brand new firearm. It will break in better and last longer. Consider it your initial inspection. Many times the mfg will use preservatives and/or rust inhibitors like cosmoline which is good for long term storage but turns into tar as soon as it mixes with gas blowback and powder residue. Some firearms even come out of the box bone dry! It’s important to have proper “operating lubrication” during the initial/break in process because the parts haven’t worn together and will tend to be rough. I wouldn’t, however, use as much as the gentleman in the video, that was a bit heavy for an AR. Store em wet, shoot em dry (or at least with minimal but necessary lubrication).

This is a great video, I like what you did here. You brought in a regular guy(in this case victim(your brother)) to address regular guy concerns about the first purchase. It was really nicely done. One question, was he a willing victim? The dude looks like he does not wanna be there in the beginning.
I tried to be cheap and not buy a cleaning snake and instead used my aluminum rod. The AR had some pretty sharp edges and it shredded the bore-rod to bits with shavings everywhere. I'm now a proud owner of a bore-snake.
When my wife wants to make the house smell good I put a wick in my large bottle of Hoppe's just like an airwick. Loved that great aroma since I cleaned my first firearm in 1965. Thanks for the video. Just bought my first black rifle.
Of course you're the expert, but I was Marine infantry and we ran ours basically dry with just a smidgeon of residual CLP. Too much lube attracts too much dust and debris- the AR internals are very tight fitting with next to no slop- it doesn't take much to mess up the functioning of that bolt carrier group. Another thing is all of that grease gets very sticky and thick in extreme cold weather- not unheard of for internal mechanisms to seize up. Especially dusty and arid environments keep very dry with dust cover closed. CLP is the best all around maintenance item for that rifle- USGI specs (at least in the 80's, not sure now).

A S&W M&P Sport II was the first rifle I bought for my 13 year old (at the time) daughter. We did some upgrades, and it's still her favorite rifle to shoot. Her favorite weapon of all time is my Berreta 96. She can can have it.....when I am no longer here, or when she is at the age when she can purchase her own. Until then she'll have to settle with her Walther PK380. She's lucky I even let her touch my Berreta!

Also applies if you build your own AR. I wish I had seen this video before I put a few hundred rounds through it. I had built my own custom AR lower using a TH-cam video from another channel and attached it to a Noveske upper. They made no mention of lubrication. I guess I should have known. My first day at the range it ran perfectly. Today, it jammed up left and right.

My two cents is wear gloves so you don’t get solvent all over your hands. It’ll save on water n soap as well.

For any newbies with a Ruger AR556 (such as myself) the charging handle WILL NOT just "slide right in" upon reassembly. There are two bumps along the sides, towards the front of the handle, that prevent its insertion. However, there are two corresponding indentations inside the chamber that accommodate those bumps, so what you have to do is tilt the charging handle's two bumps up first, nudge it forward towards those two indentations, then drop it down into those two indentations. THEN it will slide in easily. Otherwise, it's an effort in futility.

I love that every single AR I was handed was not in the safe position, I cleared and verified every one before I looked down the sights, I also Cleared and made sure they were safe before handing them back to anybody else, bolt locked back and visually verifying with conformation from the person you are handing it to.

Well done ! I have shot firearms of all different types and calibers over the past 50 years. My first ever was my Dads 16ga single shot. I have carried CCW for most of my adult life. I only recently acquired my first AR 15. Thank you for this video. You explained how to do it right , in a way that was easy to follow and understand. hey, question. why would you take off the factory grease and then relubricate the gun? couldn't you wait until the gun gets dirty to regrease it? I thought guns need to be lubricated
I shot all 3 of my Glocks straight out of the box. Both of my ARs, AK, and shotgun, when new, I gave a quick cleaning and lube before shooting.
2 Gods Debate Like Reid explains. The factory fluids are manufacturing process fluids and preservatives...NOT...lubricants.
Always a good idea to full strip, clean, and lube a brand new firearm. It will break in better and last longer. Consider it your initial inspection.
Many times the mfg will use preservatives and/or rust inhibitors like cosmoline which is good for long term storage but turns into tar as soon as it mixes with gas blowback and powder residue. Some firearms even come out of the box bone dry! It’s important to have proper “operating lubrication” during the initial/break in process because the parts haven’t worn together and will tend to be rough. I wouldn’t, however, use as much as the gentleman in the video, that was a bit heavy for an AR. Store em wet, shoot em dry (or at least with minimal but necessary lubrication).
Factory machine oils are cutting lubrications. They are meant to help metal cut through metal, not protect.

This is a great video, I like what you did here. You brought in a regular guy(in this case victim(your brother)) to address regular guy concerns about the first purchase. It was really nicely done. One question, was he a willing victim? The dude looks like he does not wanna be there in the beginning.
I tried to be cheap and not buy a cleaning snake and instead used my aluminum rod. The AR had some pretty sharp edges and it shredded the bore-rod to bits with shavings everywhere. I'm now a proud owner of a bore-snake.

When my wife wants to make the house smell good I put a wick in my large bottle of Hoppe's just like an airwick. Loved that great aroma since I cleaned my first firearm in 1965. Thanks for the video. Just bought my first black rifle.

Of course you're the expert, but I was Marine infantry and we ran ours basically dry with just a smidgeon of residual CLP. Too much lube attracts too much dust and debris- the AR internals are very tight fitting with next to no slop- it doesn't take much to mess up the functioning of that bolt carrier group. Another thing is all of that grease gets very sticky and thick in extreme cold weather- not unheard of for internal mechanisms to seize up. Especially dusty and arid environments keep very dry with dust cover closed. CLP is the best all around maintenance item for that rifle- USGI specs (at least in the 80's, not sure now).

A S&W M&P Sport II was the first rifle I bought for my 13 year old (at the time) daughter. We did some upgrades, and it's still her favorite rifle to shoot. Her favorite weapon of all time is my Berreta 96. She can can have it.....when I am no longer here, or when she is at the age when she can purchase her own. Until then she'll have to settle with her Walther PK380. She's lucky I even let her touch my Berreta!

Also applies if you build your own AR. I wish I had seen this video before I put a few hundred rounds through it. I had built my own custom AR lower using a TH-cam video from another channel and attached it to a Noveske upper. They made no mention of lubrication. I guess I should have known. My first day at the range it ran perfectly. Today, it jammed up left and right.
