I appreciate that he was fair. Half the time I would expect someone to use a short barrel ar and a cheap full length ak. But this guys awesome, nice fair test.
I like both rifles personally. I love how durable the AK is but I like how light the AR is. I also appreciate the caliber variances available with the AR so I went AR. Have had many many AKs and like them but shtf, grabbing my AR
Excellent video. All the fundamentals and ballistics are pretty much the same between the two platforms. So it comes down to a personal preference and for me, it's the AK. Like the 7. 62 for CQ
Great video. My first rifle was an AK, my second rifle was a Galil ACE, my 3rd rifle was an AK pistol. I'm 100% commited to the platform and feel really comfortable with it after 3 years. I might branch out eventually.
You should, I was an AK fanboy through and through, it was my first rifle 10 years ago, bought my first AR about 2 years ago. Not gonna lie, I wasn’t super impressed, it was a little lighter, recoiled slightly less (it was over gassed), all in all it was decent but I wouldn’t say better, especially considering how well tuned my AKs are. I started swapping steel parts with titanium to shave weight off (get a titanium muzzle brake, out front is where the weight savings mean the most) started swapping out buffers and springs. Next thing I knew, it barely recoiled more than a .22lr, and barely weighed more than a 1911 (slight exaggeration). I’m still more familiar with the AK platform, and I’d take an out-the-box AK over an out-the-box AR. But a well tuned AR will have you shooting like you never could with an AK.
@@jonahpatton8879 My goof Buffy has been telling Mr that for years. Maybe I'll build an AR one day. They just don't do it for me at the end of the day though. AKs are so much cooler to me
@@pcp2522 same, like I said, a run of the mill AR has never impressed me, but if you really know how to tune it just for you, it's something special, something you just can't do with any other platform. But, it'll still never have that subjective AK magic that you and I feel.
@@jonahpatton8879yeah an ar needs to be well tuned to feel great. Compared to my ar my Ak feels much better to shoot. Which is strange cause most people dog on the ergonomics of the Ak, I would probably like a short barreled AR in 300 blackout, way better. Cause my 16 inch ar felt a bit more awkward to hold and reload than the Ak which to me has a perfect centered weight distribution. Both are good platforms, ar is lighter with less recoil, though I don’t feel like I’d be at a severe disadvantage with the Ak.
@@PenguinNoodleSoup my AK is still my go to rifle, but I won't be for long. I'm building two ARs right now that are definitely going to be my primary rifles. One is a 13.7 inch pinned and welded, the other is going to be a 16 inch with magnified optics, I'm really doing the most with these. You can only customize an AK so much, there is virtually no limit with ARs. That doesn't mean my AK is retiring, just taking a different seat, there are still some things it can do that an AR can't, but there are more things that a well tuned AR can do better than vice versa.
I’m with you on this. I’ve trained CQB with both and for me, there’s not much difference in efficiency/ effectiveness. I think people get tunnel vision with what they prefer. I would suggest perhaps it would be smart to practice with the both AR and AK platforms as well as common side arms that most military/police use. Should the SHTF, being familiar with with what I call the big 5 could be helpful. What I consider The big 5 would be 5.56 7.62 9mm .45 and 12g.
Reid is the coolest! Super knowledgeable, but unassuming and humble. I really respect people like that. I want Reid Henrichs and John Lovell to be my best friends, lol.
I think the most important factor is what you personally are more comfortable with, and what is more readily and easily obtainable to you in terms of what’s on the shelf, whether it’s the firearms themselves, ammunition, spare parts, and what have you. Use what’s easiest for you for your go-to self-defense weapon. Anything else is just fit fun or at most a good backup.
I don't, because a lot of people without training will discuss why they like one over the other using bullshit arguments. Then there is the usual AR-47 and 300 Blackout crowd that thinks they are superior.
Reid is right practice and training is more important variable than platform. Shooting clean is more important that super speed. Hoping to attend some of your classes this year.
I just bought my first AK (I have several AR15s and 2 AR10s) and we did this same drill. My friend who lives with me also got his AK too. We were always roughy in the .75-.80 time frame but the other guys with us with their ARs were almost always in the .45 to .37 if I remember correctly. Not having to use your index finger for two purposes on the AK is what made the AR consistently faster. Shorter triggers probably also helped.
My first semiautomatic rifle was a remington 22 woodsmaster. I guess the next one was a 30.06. Then the next one was an SKS ,wich I enjoyed greatly. I finally bought an AR-15 after much reshearch and consideration. Ammunition availability and weight, played a major role. There’s a lot to be said for all the “platforms” available today.
Personal preference what ever you train with is best. I also like to run something similar to my team. Practice makes perfect. Everyday you are not in battle you should be training.
The advantage I see with the AR is with reloads. If you train to insert the mag and hit the mag release with your thumb it’s much faster than dropping an AK mag and then reaching under or over the rifle to chamber a round. I use both quite often and that’s the main advantage I see other than if you want to count mounting and aftermarket options for the AR. Stock to stock that’s pretty much it though.
I can do a basic tactical reload on an AK faster than most people can with an AR. Yes, YEARs of practice. Perfect technique. And there are videos of faster. There’s a pole @ 2 secs. IRL I trained for years to never let a mag go dry, so I always have a round in the chamber IF I need it and so I never need to rack the bolt. I have 5 ARs. 2 of them suck at free falling pmags. No one is getting me on a mag change. I also have a round in the chamber, barrel still on target and never lose my sight picture. Malfunctions is when I really get the AR man.
Both are great rifles and I own and enjoy both. It's hard to recommend AKs to any new shooters right now though because a quality and dependable AR can still be found for semi reasonable prices these days. Meanwhile, the quality options for AKs are expensive and getting hard to find and the number of low quality rifles on the market continues to be an issue. If you can find a decent deal on a high quality AK there's no reason to avoid them, but if not then I'd stick with the AR.
I've also got both, I prefer al cuz I can train more with it (more ammo on hand) but for a new shooter or oh crap situation I have to admit the ar is what I'm handing someone with a crash course.
I like the AR. I am left handed and left eyed. I ambi'ed the rifle, including the QD mounts. That way a right handed buddy could use it with a sling if he chooses. I just like the upgrade and accessory possibilities of the platform.
Excellent video thank you, amazing things said in here and are really a matter of concern, repetition, consistency, context and having accurat hits not only looking for raw speed....
It's a beautiful rifle, I shot a friend's same side folder the other day at our backyard range. BUT, my favorite of all time is the underfolder though I guess anything ya put thousands of rounds through becomes 2nd nature..
I like and can use either platform however one thing I want to point out is budget, IMO it is much easier to find a good quality AR15 than it is to find a comparable quality AK at the same price point, not everyone has 2-3 grand to drop on a rifle, for the same budget one can have a decent AR with ammo and at least one training class.
I'm an AR guy, but if you have close neighbors please consider a 9mm AR pistol varient like a CMMG Banshee or comparable. A white tip hollow 9mm is unlikely to pass through exterior walls.
A bullet that will penetrate deep enough to deliver effective terminal performance will also penetrate a few bits of drywall. Generally speaking, fast and light is better than slow and heavy in regards to reducing over-penetration, and it can be much more terminally effective. Caveats exist of course.
5:31-6:39 Speed drills with an audio timer basically instill training scars. They condition you to expect a beep, and often already have you well informed where your targets already are. So when you execute, you are just focused on going to those known targets as fast as possible. This often has you ignoring almost everything and just zoning straight in on the known targets. It's all rather like a grandly choreographed movie stunt, with rehearsals until you can pull off that one exact set of moves with that exact set of targets in that exact setting fast and smooth when the filming actually starts. (Hello, Mr. Wick.) But this isn't realistic for actual gunfights, at all. No matter how good military intel may be, the situation is never laid out for you on a silver platter like that. And this is even more true for the kinds of spontaneous operations that civilians may face, without any advance intel at all. In reality, there are lots of variables and lots of randomness. You will be surprised. You will be confronted with confusion and ambiguity, and you will have to take time to process and then make decisions on the fly. And despite the universal gun safety rule of muzzle awareness (don't point it at something you're not willing to destroy), speed drills that have you rushing straight to known targets and blasting basically have you cheat, by knowing exactly whom to be willing to destroy and whom to muzzle and shoot. They bypass the requirement for you to figure this out in the moment. And if you get used to bypassing that... So in a lot of ways those speed drills fail to train you realistically, therefore they fail to train you right. They teach you *trick shooting,* but not realistic violent incident shooting. This is also my biggest gripe about shooting competitions. Preset stages where you get to recon the exact layout beforehand is so fake. That completely deprives you of the critical task of assessing scenes and differentiating between targets and friendlies *in real time.*
It's easier for the quick ipsc shooter to learn to be "tactical" with he gun than it is for a slow/actical shooter to become quick. IPSC and 3gun competitions still give you handling fasts skills.
We use to do Urban warfare training with 20in m16A2 rifles with no issues back in the 80s and 90s! Training is what makes the difference no matter what your using. The shorter 14.5in Carbine is convince 😋👌 that's all
before the video even starts i feel pretty confident in saying that for similar overall length weapons using similar capacity magazines a 5.56 AR will barely outperform a 7.62 ak due to recoil management being much easier for 5.56. I think a 5.45 AK would be almost identical, however the AR platform will have slightly faster reloads giving it a very slight edge. Otherwise they are practically the same.
I’ve shot many deer with my Ar. .223 fusion The way it shatters bone. The bones splattering through the body The bone fragments are as deadly as the bullet. FYI I also Love the Ak 7.62 by 39 mm
You have an Ar and you are shooting deer through the body well there goes all that meat if you have an AR you can shoot them through the head or shoot them in the neck never the body.
In the end, it doesn't matter what you choose to fight with cause in CQC (close Quarter Combat) you are diving into the unknown and you have the tactical disadvantage unless you have a Floorplan of the building memorized.
I have an AR, it’s a bit too heavy for my wife. I, being a new shooter with it, requires some conditioning. Then, years later, I decided to get a PS 90. I actually prefer it over the AR, when it comes to home defense or CQC. All the weight is at the back of the gun which makes it way easier to move because of the balance. Target acquisition is way faster. It comes standard with three sights. Two iron sights and one peep hole. My wife didn’t really like the way the gun looks, but she’s starting to want her own. We have not really shot much, maybe a couple of hundred rounds a piece, but when we shoot that PS 90, the round go were we intended. It makes you feel like you are an awesome shooter right away because the rounds go straight. At 30 or so feet, she and I can hit just about any part of the target we intended with no surprises. The gun is just natural to use. With the AR, you need to practice a little but with the PS90, inner look and you’re good. The PS 90 also feels better when you switch hands to shoot, going from my dominate to my other just feels more natural than with the AR. I know the round is small, but I can get heard shots at 30 feet constantly with no training. So that’s something.
If you like the bull pup design there are plenty of 5.56 bull pups that give you all the advantages you described but with a much more lethal round. The IWI Tavor for example.
I like the PS90, but ARs have come a long way. If the PS90 isn't SBRed, it's going to be about the same length as AR with an arm brace, and weigh about the same as a reasonably lightweight AR. Sure, the PS90 balances the weight rearward, and 50 round magazines make up for the difficulty changing mags, but the PS90 also has the disadvantage for CQB of higher sight over bore; although the OEM Ringsight isn't terrible, and Design Machine makes low mounts for other optics. The AR easily wins for ballistics, even compared to my choice for self-defense 5.7 ammo, Elite T6B.
@@timewave02012 sure. It wins in ballistics, but a .50 BMG wins over all of them. But that’s not the point. You need the right tool for the job. I’m a bit concerned about over penetration with the AR, I’m not so much with the ps 90. Once practice a bit with the magazine changes, it’s not bad at all. I’d say on par with a normal ar mag change. One thing I would like to see is the ps90 have a bolt catch so when the last round goes, the bolt stays open. But they charging handle is fine. Not sure how you put a flag in the thing though. For the range.
@@darksideblues135 I only mentioned ballistics after establishing that modern lightweight pistol ARs don't have the size or weight disadvantages that normally accompany a more powerful round. Over-penetration isn't that much of an issue with either 5.56 or 5.7 because lightweight bullets that rely on high velocity destabilize easily. A lot of 12ga and conventional handgun rounds are actually worse. You'll never change a P90 magazine as fast as an AR, with equal practice on both, because you need to remove the expended P90 magazine with your support hand before fetching a loaded magazine, instead of dropping the expended AR magazine with your firing hand while (at the same time) fetching the loaded magazine with your support hand. Maybe that time difference doesn't matter, and you probably wouldn't need to reload in a self defense situation anyway, but if it did matter, the AR would have the advantage. You can definitely put a chamber flag in a PS90, from the top. The RSO might not see it at casual glance, but it'll work for you and anyone shooting with you. If we're going to get into all the pros and cons of the systems, I would also mention the trigger, and some people say it's not fair to compare a bullpup trigger to a normal layout, but there are bullpups like the K&M and Desert Tech that have really good triggers even by normal layout standards, and conversely there are normal layout rifles with triggers that are heavy like the FAL, disappointing for the money like the SCAR, or just plain terrible like the Beretta ARX. A light/crisp trigger might not even be desirable for self defense, but you really appreciate it for everything else.
The AK will lose at longer distances but up close the 7.62 is probably more deadly than the 5.56, the iron sights of the AK are not as good as the AR because theres less space be the front and rear sight, you cant put a million upgrades on an AK, you cant swap out parts as easily with an AK, everything else between these 2 rifles is strictly preference
At least in the US I think another advantage the AR would have in 5.56 is that because its so popular here you'd find someone that would most likely have some more so than the AK. Just like 9mm, 12 guage, and probably 308 would be common cartridges most people would have.
Btw most people compare the greatest latest Ar-15's to Ak 47's or Akm's made literally DECADES ago and then complain about the AK, If you were able to get the latest AK's from Kalashnikov like the AK-15 for example, you'd understand that it would shit all over your latest greatest Ar's
The AK-15 is a downgrade cope gun for reservists which is why spetsnaz (who have a choice) pick the AK-105 and use it with zenitco The AK-105 copies the 11.5/12.5" ARs that Wagner Group encountered from SOCOM units. 5.45 itself was the same thing, copying the US concept. You know whose spec ops are *not* using AKs despite issuing them to line infantry? Finns, Polish, Ukraine, etc...

I always prove all my weapons and ammunition, no exceptions, no excuses not to. this weapon is like it’s part me and very comfortable for me .but it’s not for everyone. I tell people when they finally get it , to master that weapon and help them out if I can. to buy the best made weapon they can afford. I never down play them and and lower them , if THATS the only thing you got you would be as well off with a rock. I own two hi point pistols . a9 mm and a45 acp that also shoots limited rounds of 45 super. what’s the difference to a dead man whether shot with my cz , smiths , Taurus, hi point? that would be like asking the question what is time to a hog . all my weapons must work on time, any time, every time with no exceptions. regardless of price. so we need to quit playing down those who can’t afford high dollar weapons because the anti gun groups love when that happens. gives them a little more gas to run on . @@charliefoxtrot5001 it's the only way for a pleb to lay down suppressive fire so it's definitely Italy useful in that sense. I'm just wondering if the 2 round burst would be effective indoors assuming no hostages
@@SR-wz2iv You need training!!! Once you had training, you will realize that you don't want a binary trigger to defend your life. I do not know a single firearms instructor that recommends binary triggers. I know several instructors that ban them from their classes. Reid would be one of them.
AR-15 is a direct impingement which is bad -unburned powder, carbon, and a host of other things directly to the action of your firearm and towards your magazine well. AKM is a piston which is more reliability . But both are good .
I have tons of personal experience running full auto AR’s (m4’s) in 5.56/223 and so I’ve noticed over the years that their main reliability issue when mag dumping is failure to fire due to the firing pin not 100% engaging the primer fully. But funny enough the guns will continue to function flawlessly in semi auto but in full auto they will fire 2-3 round bursts before a malfunction. I consider this a weak point to consider if you’re going to use an ar-style weapon system as a full auto support system.
Committing to a platform can get confusing especially for new shooters. I have fired both platforms, but i feel more comfortable with the AR platform, so i chose it invest my time into it. I still enjoy shooting the ak, but it will not be my first line rifle.
I’d say if you’re primarily indoors with it, pick an AR because the over penetration will be lower. If you’re primarily outdoors with it, go with an AK it’s a better barrier penetrator.
When the dogs start barking at night, a Remington 870 with a weapon light is what I grab. So far it's just been a predator trying to get into the chicken coop. But, for low light use, I like the increased hit probability of a "scatter gun."
What size is your gun's pattern? My 590a1 is a laser until the around the 25 yard mark. I can even engage torso sized targets all day at 50 yards with flight control.
That's right, but the AK has two important drawbacks. The first, disadvantage, is the weight of the weapon. With the same barrel length, a pure AK is heavier, and this is without an additional body kit. The second drawback is the balance of weapons. The entire weight of the AK is shifted forward, and any additional devices make the imbalance even greater
"When it comes to gunfights, the idea is to stay alive, not necessarily draw fast. In fact, the faster draw generally misses, and therefore gets killed." I think it might’ve been Bill Hickok or Wyatt Earp that said: my opponents were typically faster on the draw, I heard the round pass by my head, but I won the fight as I was more accurate. Of course, Bat Masterson thought the more deliberate man won the fight.

IMO the only handicap that an AK may offer in terms of speed may be reloading. It takes more training to be quick with a reload in the AK platform than an AR.
True, but in a civilian gunfight where I am probably alone against one or more opponents, it is going to be a bad day. If I have to also reload, it is going to be a very very very bad day no matter if I have my AR, Glock or AK. Just saying that if 28 to 30 rounds isn't enough then the speed of your reloading isn't high on the list of problems.

Yeah, I've noticed the same thing. Which is really frustrating since I really enjoy Reed's videos!

Always appreciate your straight forward honesty.
Cool, Reid, look: 16 people from Australia gave you the thumbs up!

I really enjoy these AR vs AK videos.
Keeping it real is why I respect you the most
Thank you Reid. I'm one of those high speed par time guys and this helped me see another side of that In a way i hadn't considered previously.
I think Lucas from Trex arms and Reid need to seriously link up for a collab!
To sum up this long video. It boils down to preference. What an individual prefers. You're welcome! 👍
Reid you are an inspiration to many.
I love both the AR and the AK.....Both are awesome firearms to train with and use for home defense......
Good presentation and teaching of proper mechanics. Very cool video.
Reid you are a great trainer. Love watching your videos.
I use both. Love both of them
Personal preference what ever you train with is best.
Another great one Reid, miss the Ridge, that last statement rings true to Turbo ;)
Solid information and rationale as always. I will be returning to the Ridge in 2022! God Bless!
Been using both for years. My personal preference is the AR-15 for many reasons. I like AKs but not my first choice.
I've also got both, I prefer al cuz I can train more with it (more ammo on hand) but for a new shooter or oh crap situation I have to admit the ar is what I'm handing someone with a crash course.
I like my AKs basic and my ARs specific. (Sbr or recce/mk12 style).
Again thanks for the great video and all the super useful information!
I appreciate the pragmatism of your content. Thank you, Reid.
I like the AR. I am left handed and left eyed. I ambi'ed the rifle, including the QD mounts. That way a right handed buddy could use it with a sling if he chooses. I just like the upgrade and accessory possibilities of the platform.
I just bought a short stroke piston upper for my AR (BRN-108) by Brownells very very accurate and minimal recoil.
Great video comparing both!
I have both there. Both affected I n close Corders

Thanks for the video.
(Hello, Mr. Wick.)
But this isn't realistic for actual gunfights, at all.

@@bradleymiller3709 on my list
Good points.
Thanks for the presentation.
At least in the US I think another advantage the AR would have in 5.56 is that because its so popular here you'd find someone that would most likely have some more so than the AK. Just like 9mm, 12 guage, and probably 308 would be common cartridges most people would have.
which ever one you are the most trained on, I personally have more time behind the ar, working on getting better with my akm

You are using a $20,000 full-auto M4 for home defense?
@@charliefoxtrot5001 unfortunately they’re like 40,000$ now. Thanks Biden
As always, good, simple, basic facts!
Committing to a platform can get confusing especially for new shooters. I have fired both platforms, but i feel more comfortable with the AR platform, so i chose it invest my time into it. I still enjoy shooting the ak, but it will not be my first line rifle.
This is a good reason to train.
I’d say if you’re primarily indoors with it, pick an AR because the over penetration will be lower. If you’re primarily outdoors with it, go with an AK it’s a better barrier penetrator.
Good execution
Good advice 👍 Thank you sir
Great video.
CQB I would grab the AK but anything over 75-100 yards I wounld definitely want the AR. Mag changes are a bit harder on an AK though.
Excellent
That's right, but the AK has two important drawbacks. The first, disadvantage, is the weight of the weapon. With the same barrel length, a pure AK is heavier, and this is without an additional body kit. The second drawback is the balance of weapons. The entire weight of the AK is shifted forward, and any additional devices make the imbalance even greater
"When it comes to gunfights, the idea is to stay alive, not necessarily draw fast. In fact, the faster draw generally misses, and therefore gets killed."
I think it might’ve been Bill Hickok or Wyatt Earp that said: my opponents were typically faster on the draw, I heard the round pass by my head, but I won the fight as I was more accurate.
