I love Maynards bands, Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. 😊 Thanks for all you do!

13/XIII = tarot: "death" = mjk: "ego death"
      13th step is apc's "lateralus", essence-tially
13th step refers to godhead = THE PACKAGE!
13th lateralus track = faaip de oiad, voice of god
"choose one... & wear THE PACKAGE like a crown"
mjk = lead-2-gold CONSCIOUSNESS type of alchemist
so it's about transmutating our collective consciousness
(similar to everything mjk's ever done, spanning 3 decades)
"you are broken" ego, lead, 44&2, disharmony
      into
"we are all one" egoless, gold, 46&2, harmony
      puscifer = alchemy recordings
      tool = diSECTIONAL (golden ratio)
apc = virgin records (isis, mother mary)
"i sold my soul to make a record, dipshit (ego)
      and. you (44&2). bought. ONE~!!!!!!!!!!!! (46&2)"
it's about addiction ...to EGO (quite specifically)

      clever got me this far
      then tricky got me in
      eye on what i'm after
      i don't need another friend
      smile and drop the cliche
      till you think i'm listening
take just what i came for
then i'm out the door again
      peripheral on the package
      don't care to settle in
      time to feed the monster
      i don't need another friend
      comfort is a mystery
crawling out of my own skin
just give me what i came for
then i'm out the door again
lie to get what i came for
lie to get just what i need
lie to get what i crave
lie and smile to get what's mine
      eye on what i'm after
      i don't need another friend
nod and watch your lips move
if you need me to pretend
because clever got me this far
      then tricky got me in
i'll take just what i came for
then i'm out the door again
lie to get what i came for
lie to get what i need now
lie to get what i'm craving
lie and smile to get what's mine
      give this to me
      mine, mine, mine
      take what's mine
lie to get what i came for
lie to get what i need now
lie to get what i'm craving
lie to smile and get what's mine
      give this to me
      mine, mine, mine
      take what's mine
      this is mine
      __________________

I'm rediscovering this album after recovery from 15 years of addiction and it's haunting how relatable it is.
      "Little angel go away
      Come again some other day
The devil has my ear today
I'll never hear a word you say
He promised I would find a little solace
      And some piece of mind
Whatever just as long as I don't feel so
      Desperate and ravenous"
C'mon now. I can re-live the withdrawal in these lyrics. It's painful and beautiful

This song represents how an addict thinks when picking up their fix, nothing else matters. This album helped me through my recovery from painkillers and still does to this day even after 10 years.

Decade ago I got on the pain pills, then graduated to heroin, before I finally got clean. Now years later I'm struggling with alcohol. This song hits hard. Shit I thought I was House MD snorting percoset, then going in and being top of my grad school class.... then reality hit.

metaphor to "drive faster" as metaphor of "sex (magick)" as metaphor of "(lead-to-gold) alchemy" as metaphor for "evolution of consciousness" ...is epitomous V maynard james keenan V "slide a mile six inches at a time..." V "til one and one are one" V "down this vagina mine" V (is for vagina)
      _____________________
      biLATERALIZation/44&2:
N parenthesis = chino, square, LEFT BRAIN
Y parenthesis = maynard, (circle), RIGHT BRAIN
CAPITALIZED = whole brain consciousness, 46&2
(melvin's "divorced" feat tool does the same thing,
it is their version of tool's "schism" ...same thing...)
      "?!" = question/R + authority/L = think for yourself
here i lay (still, and breathless)
just like always (still, i want some more)
mirrors sideways (who cares what's behind?)
just like always (still your passenger)
(chrome buttons, buckles and leather surfaces
      these and other lucky witnesses

SUCH a badass song. One of my faves. The 13th Step is my #1 APC album. You should listen to it from start to finish- the songs consecutively, tell a story. In typical Maynard genius fashion. 😜🤘
The whole thing is about addiction and recovery.
Do Blue, The Noose, Weak & Powerless and The Nurse Who Loved Me- if nothing else. They're the best songs on it- IF I HAD TO PICK- but my suggestion is do the whole album. Start to Finish. In that order. Or, at least take a listen, on your own time, to the whole thing. It's crazy good.
    Promise you'll dig it.

Alanis Morisette😂 never made that connection before but you’re dead on with that one! More than most albums, 13th step really is a complete body of work following the journey of addiction and recovery from different perspectives. It’s a great song by itself, and also it’s really just a piece of a bigger puzzle…not meant to be a complete meal by itself if you will. Always love the tool and APC content, good stuff!

When it comes to YOUR "drugs", if you've ever misplaced, lost, had them stolen, you'll get that "my precious, give me. MY precious" internal golem that emerges and it's the only fucking gd thing you can ruminate about. I think this song manifests that into pure energy, it's pure selfishness from a raw survival urge. Then when you FINALLY get it again, it's like as soon as you consume it, you get cognitive amnesia from the distress that proceeded. Or that's just my experience.

This song is so amazing. You need to start doing some Puscifer. Maynard’s genius mind set to random- each song seemingly a different style. Recent album more alien music type 👽

Joey Diaz had a good point about addicts bragging about being sober. Don’t applaud those people for finally doing what they should have been doing. You shouldn’t have been messing with that stuff anyways so don’t break your arm patting yourself on the back for finally acting right.

This has been the band that saved my life during some incredibly dark and lonely times. If other bands were little pools of light, APC was the sun. Being so close to the ledge, absolutely numb to life, I needed APC to gut me open and allow me to put words to the agony I buried.
APC also set me up to fall head first into Sleep Token as well. I think there were a lot of unintentional parallels between the two that the transition from one to the other is natural. Its like APC was like, "I got her this far now show her how to live."

The thing about APC is that it’s as much, if not more, Billy’s band as it is MJK. MJK’s influence over the lyrics and delivery is obvious but Billy is no slouch as a songwriter. The music on this track builds with great intentionality as the addict gets increasingly desperate to score their fix. At the drop, all facades of niceness, politeness, and patience are dropped and the addict lets the inner monster out. That’s when MJK goes to the growl and Billy’s guitar takes center stage. After the explosion and the addict getting what they needed, they try to calm down and repair the damage hence the return of the softer music and MJK whispering the lyrics on the outro.

Aparrently the reason "Eat the Elephant" took so long to come out is because it took that long to finally find a producer who could get Maynard and Billie on the same page.
Neither of them could agree on what sort of direction their next album would go in.

This song hit me very hard the first time I heard it. You can really hear the desperation being portrayed in his voice with the intense shallow breaths that Maynard put in certain sections. Listened to it while in rehab for opiate addiction and related too hard.
