Absolutely agree. This album is full of bangers, but this song is a standout for me that I often feel gets overlooked. I also love the intro to it. Not sure if it's an organ or calliope, but just an amazing lead-in.
The way he describes the child version of himself wanting to be "freed" and wondering "where the hell he (adult Maynard) has been" hits so hard. Because that is exactly what it is like to look back on childhood trauma as an adult.
I almost want a 2nd reaction to this where you listen to Intermission (which goes right into this) and you research the whole meaning of the song and the backstory. Its so deep, heartfelt, meaningful... The emotions are crazy... and I think you miss it if you don't (at the very least) read the lyrics beforehand and look into what they mean. Such an underrated song.
People who request songs from Polo should really remember to tell when to listen to two or three songs in a row and why... So annoying. (and naturally not Polo's fault)
Yes! It feels very unnatural without Intermission in front of it. I feel the same way about Ænima (one of my absolute favorite Tool songs) and Cesaro Summability - I can't listen to Ænima without the creepy, echoing baby crying to open the song.
So happy Polo finally got to Jimmy! It's probably my favorite, but still difficult to choose. It's dark, yet atmospheric; painful, agressive, yet vulnerable. It's a masterpiece in my opinion.
Yeh, man...this is why TOOL has held, musically, for over 30 years straight. NEVER gets old and is just as good now as it was then. Their songs just hit very different, lyrically, instrumentally, and vocally than any other band I've heard in my lifetime (I'm 56). LOTS of great bands out there over the years, but none hold your attention quite like TOOL.
Like Wings for Marie, this is another song that's deeply personal about Maynard. When James 'Jimmy' Keenan was 11, his mother suffered a really bad stroke, putting her in the hospital for months. At that time, James stayed with his stepfather, who was abusive. Needless to say, it was not a very happy time in his life, left alone with an abusive presence that should've taken care of him. So this song discusses 'going back' to his younger self and saving him. It's a really sad song, once you grasp the context and lyrics, but it's also very empowering.

When you learn the meaning behind this song, it hit sooooo much harder. It’s actually the sweetest song he’s singing to his 11 year old self (James - “Jimmy”)
Tool is my son's favorite. He was raised on old classic rock like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, etc., so when he started choosing his own music, he gravitated towards Tool. He's 36 now and has seen Tool in concert many times. But he did take me to see Deep Purple in concert a few years ago!
And to think, Polo hasn’t even really dug into the lyrics of these Tool songs yet. When he does, he will be into the band even more and really start to understand the depth and dynamics behind Tool’s music. He will hopefully start to truly appreciate the meaning and significance behind each and every song Tool have created. Can’t wait to see his first reaction all over again when he realizes the lyrics alone are mind freeing, some of the most thought provoking and spiritual releasing words ever written. Hope to see this day sooner than later, when Polo goes from reactor to connoisseur of everything Tool…

I remember listening to Tool when I was a kid and I realized now 40 why I didn't appreciate them as much cause you just gotta be a grown open minded universal being to truly incapsulate the grandeur and genius of this band.
I love what a Tool fan boy you are now after getting upset about folks saying "got 'em" on your first video. It's fun watching you discover them. It's like taking a friend to your favorite movie.
This is the CD that launched this band. They were already known for their first one, but this put them over the top. Music from this CD was played daily for two years straight on the local radio stations. It's during this CD, that comparisons were being made to Pink Floyd for their trippy sound. I don't think I've ever heard a TOOL song I didn't care for, one of the greatest bands out there. If you ever get the chance to see them live Polo, do it, you will not be disappointed. It's one thing to watch them live on TH-cam, but it's an entirely different experience to be there in person.
Finally. This all goes together with $10,000 days wings for Marie Judith all of them are referring to his mother. Jimmy is what his mother called him. I've been wanting to hear this for almost a year

Random side note that may have been mentioned before... If you happen to own the CD of this album, the case is prismed so when you put various pages of the jacket art into it it and move it left to right, you get a 3D/motion effect. Some of it is cool, some of it is disturbing, but it was a nice touch by the band to add a little extra for the fans.
Dope reaction polo. Tool is one of the greatest and most important bands of all time. This is arguably my favorite song from them, it's got everything you want. Maynard's voice is unreal and soul piercing. Danny's drumming is ridiculous, Adam's guitar playing is mesmerizing and Justin's bass is amazing. 🤘🔥🔥🔥🔥

God… thank you Polo. Tool has been my favorite band since I discovered them as a teenager. I lost my husband and both of my best friends as well as a handful of other friends and my grandparents the past few years and listening to music I’ve known has been too hard for me; especially Tool though. I can’t pick one favorite song, but Jimmy is a tough contender. I was binging some of your videos and clicked on this- kind of forgetting that I was stepping into delicate territory regarding my emotions that are evoked about my lost loved ones and our time spent listening to these songs together. Watching you experience this for the first time got me through the song though. It was really cathartic. It was like I wasn’t alone anymore; I still had someone sitting next to me but I also got to watch the reaction of another person discovering something amazing. Kind of like going on a hike with someone and watching their face light up once we get to the top to see the view. In this case, the journey is the reward. Thanks for sharing this. If you haven't reacted to Eulogy yet, you got to check it out. The sound design and mixing on that song is extraordinary. The whole album is amazing, obviously, but that track has stood out for me as the most innovative and unique on the album.
"Jimmy" is an important Tool song that does get overlooked, even by the band and the fans, it's integral musically and lyrically to the entire Tool and Perfect Circle voyage, it's the exposition of a characters backstory and it shouldn't delve too long yet it should be deep, emotive and meaningful, they really came into their own on AEnima
just like almost All Tool songs this spent time at the Top ! it was so atmospheric and heart felt..and you get more out of it years later when you know the lyrics and know or create your own back story...
Polo, check out the lyrics for this song. It's about Maynard reconnecting with his 11yr old self in order to heal from his mother becoming wheelchair bound.
Tool or a masters at building tension, and this song really is a great example of that. So many isolated melodies that create tension and then release you and then pull you back.
If you're wondering what to listen to after that, for mellower yet still powerful songs by other bands, you could try: - Street Spirit (Fade Out) by Radiohead - The Great Below by Nine Inch Nails - Something I can Never Have by NIN Heavier and disturbing: - The Becoming by NIN (I know, it's a lot of NIN. I have doubts about the stereotype of Black people being late, but I have spent a lot of time in Latin America, and yeah, it is like the whole region is just usually late for anything and everything. "Jimmy" is an important Tool song that does get overlooked, even by the band and the fans, it's integral musically and lyrically to the entire Tool and Perfect Circle voyage, it's the exposition of a characters backstory and it shouldn't delve too long yet it should be deep, emotive and meaningful, they really came into their own on AEnima

this song is about Jim Kelly, maynard is a huge bills fan and this was written right after their 4 superbowl appearences in the early 90s.

Tool or a masters at building tension, and this song really is a great example of that. So many isolated melodies that create tension and then release you and then pull you back.
He's totally right about Adams style. Beautifully simplistic, kind of like Kurt. Love him.

This song is about his mom. He was also the lead singer of A Perfect Circle. Listen to Judith, which is also about his mom.

I have doubts about the stereotype of Black people being late, but I have spent a lot of time in Latin America, and yeah, it is like the whole region is just usually late for anything and everything. I do feel a bit like a second class citizen because I don’t subscribe to yours or anyone else’s patreon channel. So suggestions made on THIS forum are overlooked by you.
