    Anyone who has survived a friend or family member who has, at least temporarily, overcome addiction feels this song in every fiber of their dna. “I’m glad your well… but you still destroyed a lot of people”
    This album explores EVERY aspect of addiction. Amazing considering Maynard has never struggled with addiction--however he has lost so many friends to it.

      I think the fact that the public is not aware of any struggles with addiction doesn't mean he hasn't had any. He goes to great lengths to keep as much of his life as private as possible in his position.

    • @davidm6329
      @davidm6329 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it's a tough side of addiction that we don't talk about often. We generally either talk about the fully positive or fully negative side; either the person fixes themselves and is redeemed, or they spiral into toxicity and damnation.
      Sometimes there's no making things right. I personally believe addiction is an illness, and you blame the illness for the negative actions of the person rather than the person themselves, but I've never lost a kid to a drunk driver.
      So what, do we never allow a person to be truly redeemed? How do we and they live with the damage they did? These questions don't have easy answers.

      I lost my brother to alcohol. We were camping. It was a Sunday, and he was 39. It was a shit show, to say the least. Adiction is a nasty beast. • @edmilewski2907

    It's about the 12 step program for addicts and alcoholics. 12 steps, not 13. The 13th step is relapse. Kinda like 18 holes in golf. The 19th hole is the bar. Step 9 is making amends to all the people you've harmed in the past. But how can you make amends to the dead? As always, Maynard's lyrics are absolute genius.

    I always forget this song but then when I listen to it I sing along, knowing the lyrics so well and the beauty of it. It's gorgeous. It always feels like that gothic vibes song to me. I found beauty in something horrifying for it. I never entirely *got* this song. I'm trying to listen for this. But the feeling was always a sort of forlorn ghost melody which is what I loved about APC.
    I'm amused every one of those becomes your new favorite. On another note I always felt this was just about a bully. Never a particular bully. You know how you can have those popular bullies who always have solid images but in reality are shitty and... The axe forgets but the tree remembers. and it's like "You can't fix this anymore. Your perfect image is falling."

    • @athannyx6815
      @athannyx6815 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Add on here to make sure the likes are right. I do get this is not true to the album and that the lyrics are probably more clear. A lot of A Perfect circle for me is about the feeling first and meaning of the lyrics second. A lot of the songs I only got the meaning of the lyrics as an adult. What I feel this is about vs what it actually is is interesting.

    • @chrisfrench9257
      @chrisfrench9257 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@athannyx6815 I listen to all music in this manner. If I focused too much on the meaning there are far too many I'd likely not listen to that I love. The sound, feeling... the raw emotional power of a song, that's where it is for me.

    • @athannyx6815
      @athannyx6815 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@chrisfrench9257 It alternates with me and songs because singers matter so much, so I need to be able to hear the lyrics. But A Perfect Circle sometimes what the song actually means is secondary to the emotions conveyed. Whether it's anger, like Judith or Counting Bodies like Sheep, or feeling trapped like Rose or the playfulness of Magdalena (I always felt that song very mocking of the narrated perspective "I lost my self control, beyond compelled to throw this dollar..." and "I'd sell my soul, my self esteem, I don't want to pray outside."). Or the sense of drowning like Blue.
      But some songs are so much journey, the story conveyed, some are emotion, some are message and some can be all of that or none of that. Great thing about songs.

    Love your reactions! Yours are my favorite. Not because of making faces or the stuff you joke about. It's just I'm so passionate about music and I LOVE sharing music and hearing peoples ideas about an art form I also appreciate. I listen to almost every genre. The thing about MJKs music, is it is not something imo, and I speak to all three of his bands, you can't pin it down to one genre. If you think about it, most songs are like that. These bands just really offer unique, profound lyrics that so many people can relate to. I love the lyrics, the instrumentals, the way he uses his voice, just everything. I can't decide if I like Tool or APC better! 😂 Puscifer rocks as well.

Every time I hear I get ideas for a music video about a contract assassin who just finished a job and is driving away in the rain, and as the music builds, the ghost of everyone he took looms in the shadows out beyond the car lights. He finally makes it home and clutches his family tight, and it is implied that was his last job and now he is going clean.

    I know you did this a year or so ago but I found it today. I listen to many of your reactions(mostly Tool, some bball). I'm super glad you like this song. It's crazy how.life can change the way you perceive a song again. My youngest child(Son) died last February due to a drunk driving accident. He was in the back seat and ejected out of the car and died on impact. The young man driving the vehicle was his friend in the Navy and supposed to be the DD for the night. He was found to be over 2x the limit and of course, he's alive and not injured. There was a 2nd young man in the passenger seat who also lost his life that night/early morning.
    Amends?! How the hell can he ever make amends for this! I believe in justice, retribution, forgiveness, and punishment. Next month I'll go to CT for the sentencing hearing. He will only get a maximum of 8yrs total for the deaths of two young men. My son was 23yrs old and finally getting his life on track. Our justice system is very flawed and in need of real change. Anyway, you have the meaning of this song correct.

    This whole album references 12 step groups, addiction, and all the hardships that come along with such problems. Making amends is the 8th and 9th steps and the process of making amends to those that have past is a bit of a point of contention. Everyone has their own way. 13th step is a reference to the fake 13th step which is essentially taking advantage of new comers to the program sexually or any other way. We call people who engage in this behavior 13 steppers.

    2024 with war in my country, thousands dead, murdered.. this song sounds different now.
    Now, for me, this song about a one viliant, who persuing his nonsense goal started a war, started one of the largest killing streaks. But in the end of the day, he'll die. Patheticly, like a filthy little coward, maybe begging for mercy (oh i wish), exuses himself, or just shot, doesn’t matter.
    And now he's "completely silent", goes through 13 circles of hell, probably understanding something, understanding what he has done, repenting, acquiring his thin, faded, dull halo. And in the end of his way, a crowd, of millions, million souls. They're just looking on him, in his eyes, silently asking "How? How will you? No, there are too many, too many..." . And weight of guilt, becomes weight of halo, that starts slowly slipping onto his neck, and slowly begins to tighten. Millions of gloating smiles, with widely opened eyes, watching, enjoying the moment of revenge, of retribution.

    If you're looking for your next Perfect Circle track...may I suggest Passive? It was featured on the Keanu Reeves Constantine movie and it really good.

    The greatest part about any maynard band, you can interpret the music like you see it, and still be 100% right. Even if every single human said otherwise, its tool, a perfect circle and pusifer, there is no wrong answer to how you received this or any other song of those 3 bands! To me, this one always seemed like an outcry towards himself for not doing exactly as he planned in his youth. Its not hateful or even angry, its sad and a lil disappointed. Like how come you didnt grow up from that?! Especially the beginning to me, sounds like hes speaking to his kid self, to me. Im glad you liked it though!

    Making amends is one of the 12 steps... Either you didn't know or Maynard didn't know, if that interpretation of the song is proper. I have a totally different take on this song. I think your pretty cool! Keep it up!

    This song is so beautiful but condescending at the same time. You can tell Maynard had a lot of people in his life dealing with addiction. Musically it's perfect, lyrically some parts of it rub me the wrong way. I could totally see this song making someone relapse.

    I think of the lyric “…curious how you’re planning to go around making your amends to the dead” like ok you hurt everyone you loved in horrendous acts of selfishness by lying and stealing and avoiding people for such a long time , people that cared so much for you and were in so much pain having to witness your descent while they were helpless to do anything to save you. Some of those people took that pain to their grave never seeing your recovery. So how are you planning on making amends to them, and even if they’re not dead there are still many years of pain and absence that can never be recovered .
    That was a lot and maybe I’m way off, but that’s what those lyrics mean to me

    AA type programs have 12 steps. The joke with them is that the 13th step (for which the album is named) is relapse

    This song shows just how much he hates his father. As mellow as it is its very dark. His father shows up at his mother's funeral after all the years of abuse to him and his mom like he's been reborn like nothing ever happened. He was in disbelief of his audacity to show up there knowing the history. His father was a true piece of sh*t. He was never a dad.

    There is the drug addict being full of themself which i think is the main version of the song. Others have said it could be an anti war song for a politician who feels great as they won a war yet many men died to make that win. Either way, awsome song and great album.
