I think he might be talking about his own self and the heroin addiction he went through and his mother being the one who helped him get sober, but now she has passed. So maybe he's speaking of his own self? Just a thought... ❤ Thanks for all you do!
Oh Man you HAVE to listen to A Perfect Circle - Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums. Even if you don't do a react, you have to listen to that one!
This is actually my favorite song of all time. Still gets me every time. The haunting lyrics, the progression, the layering of verses... I'm excited to see what you think. My second favorite song of all time is Wings for Marie pt 2. ❤️😇
Ditto Kimberly, this is one of my all time favorite albums. Its the only reason i clicked on this reaction video. I'm pleasantly surprised how much i'm enjoying watching someone else discover and enjoy it.
I'm a massive metal fan but will admit one guilty pleasure fed by this song. I nearly always have to listen to Taylor swift and the civil wars after this 🤔
theres something about 13th step you cant put a finger on, the first time you hear it it might be just ok but when you hear it again its almost as if it has unlimited replayability, just the best album in 2 decades
It's about the 12 step program for addicts and alcoholics. 12 steps, not 13. The 13th step is relapse. Kinda like 18 holes in golf. The 19th hole is the bar. Step 9 is making amends to all the people you've harmed in the past. But how can you make amends to the dead? As always, Maynard's lyrics are absolute genius.
@@CyPhaSaRin I don't know about "Everyone started with it" but I agree on it being underated because I don't see nearly as many reactions to The Noose as other APC songs. It sort of flys under the radar for some. I wish more people would react to it tbh.
"so glad to see you well" For such a throw away line during a casual conversation that line stings with condescending sarcasm every time I hear it. Outstanding writing once again MJK
Anyone who has survived a friend or family member who has, at least temporarily, overcome addiction feels this song in every fiber of their dna. “I’m glad your well… but you still destroyed a lot of people” This album explores EVERY aspect of addiction. Amazing considering Maynard has never struggled with addiction--however he has lost so many friends to it.
I think the fact that the public is not aware of any struggles with addiction doesn't mean he hasn't had any. He goes to great lengths to keep as much of his life as private as possible in his position.
I think it's a tough side of addiction that we don't talk about often. We generally either talk about the fully positive or fully negative side; either the person fixes themselves and is redeemed, or they spiral into toxicity and damnation. Sometimes there's no making things right. I personally believe addiction is an illness, and you blame the illness for the negative actions of the person rather than the person themselves, but I've never lost a kid to a drunk driver. So what, do we never allow a person to be truly redeemed? How do we and they live with the damage they did? These questions don't have easy answers.
I lost my brother to alcohol. We were camping. It was a Sunday, and he was 39. It was a shit show, to say the least. Adiction is a nasty beast. While the pain was unimaginable, there was oddly a sense of relief. It was finally over. I've always wondered for those who beat it, do you get the relief, without all that pain?
I always thought of my bff to this song, she was the best, prettiest, funniest person in a room... we grew up in the oxy age and she never left, I will be turning 38 this year, and she is forever 33... miss her unimaginably!!!
A perfect circle was a pivotal part of my late teens/early twenties. Alone, addicted, living in rural northern Michigan, eating shrooms while also trying not to lose my mind. All I listened to was A Perfect Circle, Audioslave, and The Doors. I don’t know if I’m any better for it, but it’s a part of me now.
I adore this song. Every time I hear I get ideas for a music video about a contract assassin who just finished a job and is driving away in the rain, and as the music builds, the ghost of everyone he took looms in the shadows out beyond the car lights. He finally makes it home and clutches his family tight, and it is implied that was his last job and now he is going clean.
By and Down the River is also a great song of them. Atmospheric, dark and melodic, with Maynard's voice on the forefront and some amazing guitar riffs to top it off.
I know you did this a year or so ago but I found it today. I listen to many of your reactions(mostly Tool, some bball). I'm super glad you like this song. It's crazy how.life can change the way you perceive a song again. My youngest child(Son) died last February due to a drunk driving accident. He was in the back seat and ejected out of the car and died on impact. The young man driving the vehicle was his friend in the Navy and supposed to be the DD for the night. He was found to be over 2x the limit and of course, he's alive and not injured. There was a 2nd young man in the passenger seat who also lost his life that night/early morning. Amends?! How the hell can he ever make amends for this! I believe in justice, retribution, forgiveness, and punishment. Next month I'll go to CT for the sentencing hearing. He will only get a maximum of 8yrs total for the deaths of two young men. My son was 23yrs old and finally getting his life on track. Our justice system is very flawed and in need of real change. Anyway, you have the meaning of this song correct.
Fun fact I found out about weak & powerless in 2002 on Napster that it was a collabo with Reznor and mjk called tapeworm project. Mjk owned the rights I suppose and put it on the epic 2nd lp from apc. Woohoo
I always forget this song but then when I listen to it I sing along, knowing the lyrics so well and the beauty of it. It's gorgeous. It always feels like that gothic vibes song to me. I found beauty in something horrifying for it. I never entirely *got* this song. I'm trying to listen for this. But the feeling was always a sort of forlorn ghost melody which is what I loved about APC. I'm amused every one of those becomes your new favorite. On another note I always felt this was just about a bully. Never a particular bully. You know how you can have those popular bullies who always have solid images but in reality are shitty and... The axe forgets but the tree remembers. and it's like "You can't fix this anymore. Your perfect image is falling."
Add on here to make sure the likes are right. I do get this is not true to the album and that the lyrics are probably more clear. A lot of A Perfect circle for me is about the feeling first and meaning of the lyrics second. A lot of the songs I only got the meaning of the lyrics as an adult. What I feel this is about vs what it actually is is interesting.
@@athannyx6815 I listen to all music in this manner. If I focused too much on the meaning there are far too many I'd likely not listen to that I love. The sound, feeling... the raw emotional power of a song, that's where it is for me.
@@chrisfrench9257 It alternates with me and songs because singers matter so much, so I need to be able to hear the lyrics. But A Perfect Circle sometimes what the song actually means is secondary to the emotions conveyed. Whether it's anger, like Judith or Counting Bodies like Sheep, or feeling trapped like Rose or the playfulness of Magdalena (I always felt that song very mocking of the narrated perspective "I lost my self control, beyond compelled to throw this dollar..." and "I'd sell my soul, my self esteem, I don't want to pray outside."). Or the sense of drowning like Blue. But some songs are so much journey, the story conveyed, some are emotion, some are message and some can be all of that or none of that. Great thing about songs.
For me - and it works different for everyone, really - this song resonates because I came from a highly abusive family; one so bad it led to some 'self-deletion'. Now, years later, some of these people are reformed and have found faith and religion. And they're proud of who they are now - and they should be. But hey, while I'm glad they're a better person now, it came a bit too late for a couple people, didn't it? I doubt they would find much comfort in what a good person you are now, having paid the ultimate price from who you were.
The Outsider as well. This entire album is spectacular. Got it when it came out, I was in 5th or 6th grade. I got it for their single Weak and Powerless, which is a great song. But they're are 5 songs better than that on this album
You’ll see with a perfect circle there’s songs like this one, breña, 3 libras, gravity, Orestes, etc that are just…they hit different. Love the band and glad you hit this one.
I'm seriously digging your insights into all things Maynard. Some reactors, yourself included, have really taken Tool/Puscifer/APC to heart and it's a delight to watch your awareness open like a flower. Around our house, we imagine this song is about Kissinger.
My favorite A Perfect Circle song. Feel like you pretty much nailed your analysis. The bassline is the haunting part and it drives your emotions through the song. So unique
Definitely one of my absolute favorite APC tracks, Maynard's voice is so beautiful and almost ghostly, with some gorgeous guitar and under-spoken drums combining into pure musical bliss. The whole "13th Step" album is great and worth listening to in order, front to back.
I just started listening to the album myself. And I haven't gotten past this song yet, it's so beautiful, meaningful, and as others have said haunting.
Love your reactions! Yours are my favorite. Not because of making faces or the stuff you joke about. It's just I'm so passionate about music and I LOVE sharing music and hearing peoples ideas about an art form I also appreciate. I listen to almost every genre. The thing about MJKs music, is it is not something imo, and I speak to all three of his bands, you can't pin it down to one genre. If you think about it, most songs are like that. These bands just really offer unique, profound lyrics that so many people can relate to. I love the lyrics, the instrumentals, the way he uses his voice, just everything. I can't decide if I like Tool or APC better! 😂 Puscifer rocks as well.

Their 1st and 2nd albums are absolutely a master piece of great music! I love tool and a perfect circle and I really dig your reactions to it. It's obvious to me you are a passionate person so males sense you would dig this
Do in this moment into the light live!!!!
Havent even started the song yet, but this is my favorite A Perfect Circle song! When the drums come in.. Holy shit, eargasm haha! Intantly clicking like on this video!
This always gives me a parole hearing vibe, even though I've never been to a parole hearing.
Just wanted to chime in that I found your top tier react channel because someone on an obviously contrived reaction vid name dropped you as one of the few reactors whose reactions he takes as genuine. He was right. Your insightful music appreciation just the icing on the cake🎂👌
Best way to describe this album is just one word...... Atmospheric
Gravity is another beautiful APC song, it has a deeply personal meaning to me.
yep. you're deep in that rabbit hole now. nice!
Epic album
I did a vocal cover of this song last year. Came out pretty decent!! Still waiting patiently for “The Patient”!🤟🏼😎
incredibly simple instrumental with lyrics that sting. That album has a song "PET" thats also a good listen.
The Package is another banger of this album.
This is 1 of those songs where I’d heard it but I hadn’t really HEARD it yet ya know? & when I figured out the lyrics & so forth I was just 🤯such a great song 🖤🥶
Their 1st and 2nd albums are absolutely a master piece of great music! This 3rd band pussifer is very good also, some of pussifers stuff Is pure comedy but the other pussifer stuff is pure perfection also as this song you reacted to is. It just blows my wig back that someone can write so many great great songs .... even in 3 differnt bands.. he still delivers 100%
It's the calm before the calm. There is no "storm" on this track. Check out Pet, also off of the Thirteen Step album.
Your lyrical interpretation is spot on! Love watching your videos, and that you’re in Ohio guy not far from me!
Great tune. Great video. In concert, APC extends the ending of this song. Gotta see them live.
Maynard is amazing. ✌️
