    You can have all the food,shelter and water you need to survive but without the mental capacity to cope being alone under challenging conditions people will likely fail. One of the best coping mechanisms is to keep a journal, or blog, to help ease these pressures. It is not about being macho or manning up at all. Loneliness under extreme challenging conditions will finish off those who 'think' they have survival sorted and cannot cope with the mental aspect. Hats off to you matey, godspeed and wherever you are n the World keep making your videos and blogs. Discussing your mental outlook is not a weakness, it is a coping mechanism.....huge difference between those people who think mental illness is simple hardship!

    Barry, I have really been enjoying your adventure. Please keep it up. If I can be a critic. I believe that if you carried a bit more sail and don't over reef you will get a much smoother and faster ride. The boat is reacting to the sea because she is not being stiffened with the sails. ie NOT ENOUGH canvas up! Try it, and I think you will be pleasantly surprised. She will be turning a better speed and your self-steering kit will work better and hopefully do away with those uncontrolled jibes as well. Anyway, all the best to you. Here is wishing you fair winds and pleasent seas.

    Congratulations on crossing the equator! As far as trash is concerned glass, paper and cardboard seem like they’re the right thing. Cans (at least here in America) are lined with plastic which may contribute to the micro-plastic issue. Happy sailing

  • @karlbecher1553
    @karlbecher1553 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    What you are doing is a dream of mine, just to leave the world behind and just sail. What you said about the rubbish, well that is a problem but with you keeping all the plastic , you are doing the right thing, well done. The other problem you have is being by yourself and you really should never say that you are by yourself, and it may be a good idea to have some kind of weapon, does not have to be a gun , can be a compound hunting bow or crossbow. I envy you being able to do what you are doing maybe one day I can experience it myself , but me being 51 years old I doubt it. Happy sailing my friend stay safe and happy from your friend in Western Australia ,Karl

    Great video, I will be getting a 33-43 Hans Christian in the next 5 year's and will be sailing Mexico, the Marquesas, and on to Tonga, New Zealand...and who knows where else. You are very inspirational. I agree very much with the trash disposal questions you mentioned. A soda can, tin can, or a bottle can house a crab, or a small fish keeping him safe from predators before breaking down. The glass I may try to make a crusher to break it down to very small bits like sand before I drop it overboard.

    Enjoying all your videos and it was particularly poignant crossing the equator. Love you detail and sense of humor mate. So obviously that you are decent bloke...since you keep incredible company - Maria and Nike. They seem so super nice and have such a unique and inseparable bond.
    Watched you visit back home earlier...looked like a great time with lifelong friends/family. One can pretty much tell the quality of a man by both the company that he keeps and the way that you are treated by them. You are a lucky man...as they are also lucky to have you. Long may your big jib draw...and may the winds be in your sails as you head south across the Pacific.

    Barry, Thanks for giving a much more accurate picture of sailing on a small boat. I really got into sailing about ten years ago & did all of the certifications in two years except the USCG Master license. Still working on that but probably will remain a coastal cruiser. I did sail to Bermuda from our east coast but it was a 60 footer with hot showers, electric winches, air conditioning, satellite navigation & a cook. So, even though I did all of the sailing it wasn't a "real sail" , nothing like you do. Have a safe sail to Tahiti. Hope to follow your progress...

    I've sailed fo many years - what you do with your rubbish has always been a problem. I love the pack the plastic in a bottle idea - when it comes to cans - bash them flat ... this breaks up the protective covering and lets them rust away much faster. As for the plastic, you're right, most islands bury it ... It's a cruel world.

    Brilliant tips on proper disposal of plastic items into a container of mineral water! I would seriously consider crushing the glass into fine particles before carefully releasing it in deep water. Cartons that have liquids like soups, milk, juice commonly use plastic inside as liners and do not degrade in the ocean. For metal cans, I would rinse them clean in ocean water and dry them out, then flatten and store for proper disposal once on land again.

  • @MrJJSimonds
    @MrJJSimonds 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Barry... I imagine when the copters are out and about, and they see a ship they do a fly by to give the occupants a chance to scream for help. Sinking glass and metal... yes.. .plastic bad... and although burning it is also bad, it is WAY better than the bury or toss it anywhere. ( glad you found some internet) As for manning up... I think if I were in your shoes, (and part of me so wished it was) I would bring it down to "here I am and here I go, as what choice is there otherwise." ... but I can appreciate the massive slog through the slow seas that it is.... please know that each moment you are out there, I and others would trade places in a heartbeat, as you are living a dream of lives for the ages. the only thing a person could do greater than what you are doing, was already done nearly 50 years ago when man landed on the moon. Short of leaving the planet, you are engaged in one of the most personally challenging endeavors a human can undertake. That you feel the weight of this pushing down on you is not a fault, but the realization of your humanity, your frailty... that you are the tip of mankind afforded a view of humanity few have the opportunity to experience. Survival... risk... challenge... reward.. the human soul needs these things and it is what I think created humanity, this need to BE more than we are.... so we seek and travel, write and sing, share and breathe.. you are the tip of the spear of humanity and would that all could touch our word as you are doing, for then they would see how small they are and how important it is that the mass of humanity not destroy the very thing that makes our lives possible on this "soggy rock in space".

    Barry, you're a funny bugger !!! I've been there too.... we all get like that, I like the honesty. The Pacific is quite big and can be lonely. When land birds land on my boat I make a nest for them under the dodger and put food and water for them. OK, they make a mess but will stay with you till you reach port, you can watch them putting on weight. You have someone to talk to at night when you come up to look around. Sometimes they will fly off for awhile but come back.
    When I was in the San Blas Islands the Kuna offered to take rubbish for 5 to 10 dollars which made me feel good until later I saw them release it into the sea at the other end of the island. It blows out to sea mostly from there and you sail through it as you approach.

    What a great moment for you. It stirred some emotion for me watching that. Crossing the equator I mean. By the way. Thank You for the honesty about your trepidation about leaving. That really helped me as I am leaving in a month to circumnavigate Vancouver Island and I have been finding reasons to doubt my decision to do it. Your honesty about how you really feel tells me that this is a normal way to feel and to trust my boat and my preparation and myself.
    Those seas that were short and steep look exactly like what we encounter in the Strait of Georgia or as it is now called , the Salish Sea. Short , steep and relentless.

    Shred the cans and get a glass smasher to smash into little bits and it will deteriorate faster. The plastic can be shreaded also and you can fit more into those containers. Of course it will be a manual shredder. :)

    Your honesty about the passage and how you feel are why I watch. I feel like we are there. I’m sure not everyday is an Instagram pic. What an accomplishment sir!! You should be proud. Love the channel!!!

    Man I love this channel, it takes big balls to do what you are doing Barry, single handed across the Atlantic now the Pacific. You’re in a very small community compared to other sailors and I admire you for that and also let’s not forget the absolutely selfless duty of the Lifeboat work back here in Blighty , not many people get out of their beds in the middle of the night during a raging storm to get aboard a boat and go to sea to rescue people and to do that for free !!! Well again a very small club you belong to for doing that. Sir I salute you

    Man up is right. It does look a little bumpy out there but at least the air is clean. Looking forward to the next video.

    According to the shot you did of your hull and water line, you have a friggin' garden growing there! In a few days you will hit the doldrums and flat seas, a good time to clean the crap off your hull and maybe then you will pick up a few knots. Don't worry. the sharks won't get ya! But...........

    Oh man what an adventure! Loved it. About the waste; cans have a thin plastic liner so not environment friendly. Glass erodes over thousands of years, but it is harmless.

    Great idea with the plastic waste storage. One thing to think about in disposal. Burning plastics at low temperature results in the production of dioxins. These are long lived highly toxic carcinogens, actually one of the more dangerous pollutants for critters and us!!

    Great videos! I never sailed the open oceans but have cruised the Great Lakes on a custom built Nantai 37, which was built in Taiwan. It was well rigged for cruising with wind generator, 100 gallons water tankage, and 100 gallons fuel storage (both inside the semi-full keel). Had teak over fiberglass decks and beutiful carved teak interior!
    I also owned a Venture 21, Lancer 28, and. J-30 sailboat.

    Use 4 plastic Bottles as a Wind Indicator like a Wheel ,put a hole in the caps and put some Aluminium rod as your shaft silicone the rod into place so its solid ,cut a scoop out of the Ends of the Bottles to catch the wind just like the one that has given up. If you have any of the old mounting Brackets that would work as well. lol That would be 4 more bottles that would not have to be burnt :)
