Thanks so much for your support,
The adventure continues.
Safe sailing.
Boat:
White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.
The camera gear:
Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera.
Editing:
Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.
Content:
I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.
Comments and being at sea:
I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.

Idk why life always insists on being so damn difficult. Honestly, it is a miracle that anyone is ever NOT depressed. Those with overflowing coffers never truly understand the struggle of the working class. But the way you always overcome is inspiring, Barry. God bless you, kind sir.
Yes read the gospels and give your troubles worrys concerns to the cross were Jesus died for us and give it him. Tomorrow will always come amen
Soak your foot in salt at night and in the morning
So sad to sea old sea dog go down! 0h wait, NO ño he's good
Just shows it’s not only the boat that has to be right, the Old Seadog has to be firing on all cylinders too. Good decision to go back, and you were rewarded with a good sail to Keppel Island. What a well deserved anchor beer! Enjoy, and looking forward to your next video Barry! 🍺🍕⛵️💙
Dear Barry, I want to say how sad I am that I feel that I have to write the following comments to you. In doing so, I am in awe with your achievements and you have my total respect and admiration for the courage to go out and "Do It." So many including yours truly can only dream about what you are doing. However, there is a however in this letter.
Frankly, I think you have put a lot of blame for your mishaps and misfortunes on Bundaberg. Sometimes you need to take stock of yourself and what you do next. You overlooked a few things when you first left Bundaberg on the first day of the video. The issues you mentioned were caused by you, and had nothing to do with City of Bundaberg, or the marina that you stayed at. By the way I am not a resident of Bundaberg or Queensland. I have always been quite amazed at the way you carry water and fuel for example. and how you stow things on the deck. I note that in this segment two containers, probably more, were quite lose. What else is not in its right place waiting to come lose and to cause a problem? You set off without the AIS having its correct dedicated aerial having mistakenly swapped it over with the radio arial. You also forgot to connect the wires to your depth sounder. Barry you are sailing in the largest Barrier Reef in the world. a depth sounder is not a luxury it is essential, ask Captain Cook. Why did you do that?
I think Barry, maybe you are getting tired of the nomadic lifestyle. Your journey has been momentous and incredible to say the least, It is an achievement few mortals have achieved or even aspire to achieve. I have been with you since the start and have appreciated the videos, but I just think that the complaints about Shaddie, Bundaberg etc. may be a sign of a fatigue and tiredness that may need you to take a complete break from Shaddie for a while. Walk away for a while, go back to your family and rest that leg, so you can return again with the vigor of the early days. It is far better to do that and come back to Shaddie than for you to continue and maybe make a mistake you may not be able to overcome. Think about giving yourself a break Barry, the audience can wait.
Whatever you decide, I wish all the very best.
A working depth sounder would be advisable. Great comment! The Reef might have some surprises. Only sailed there once . Nov/des, no gps, and it was an experience. I sang this in Townsville for a girl. " I call out to the ocean, my tears fall into the the sea . For the lost that have been been broken, across the dunes of of time repeatedly. th-cam.com/video/iyLDSNPWZb0/w-d-xo.html
Glad to see that you have survived Bundaberg Barry. Lesser men than you haven't been so lucky!
You are a patient man. I would be using Perkins as an anchor by now. Hope she holds up for ya.
Ha
Absolutely!!! When in doubt change it out! He knows better, but there's the beer, and that you can take a couple of ways...
Capt'n Barry .. You're off on the second half of your adventure Mate, even if it took two attempts to leave port, but with clear conscience and sound running gear .. Stay well and pay close attention to your leg .. Thanks for posting this video Captain, we always look forward to your next adventure and port of call .. And Happy St. Patrick's Day Captain!
Bit of a mea culpa there Barry. If it's any consolation we all have them. I have done around 360,000 ocean miles and still have them. Be easy on yourself Mate, things will go wrong and you will fix them. Love what you do, keep doing it..
Cheers.
Sit back on a bench somewhere - open an nice can of cold beer - feel the sun on your face, warming your bones AND THANK EFFIN GOD YOUR NOT STUCK BACK HERE IN THE UK>... one life Barry - keep living the dream
Barry was sensible, he left UK to you and me.
Best thing I did was leaving the f, ing uk.
Barry if you ever get to Africa I have a lodge on Likoma island in lake Malawi. You are welcome to stay for free and hopefully by then I should have my boat. Chiponde beach resort! The place to be if you need a rest.
Come on Perkins be good, our Barry needs you! Lovely sunsets in this one, thanks for taking us all with you.
Geez Barry, the boat troubles would be enough, but coupled with a bum leg, you’ve earned mad respect for your ability to continue! I hope something nets you some good luck soon. You’re a living example of perseverance. You certainly never seem to be at a loss for good friends.😊❤🤗👍💯🎉
Hold fast Barry. Minor set backs lead to greater rewards. Thanks for sharing another great update on the Adventures of an Old Seadog.
Oh yeah! A grumpy old man! Smile!
Shaddie's romping again! So good to see you out at sea, and away from those troubles. God speed, Barry! May the wind be at your back and may Shaddie always know the way.
It’s interesting how life will throw these curve balls our way
They are not entirely by chance, but looking back you will see they are there to send a message,in times of disparity when you feel utterly helpless and feel like giving up it brings out a resilience which will make you stronger than you ever thought possible.
Many, many times you have faced such challenges but in your sovereignty you rise above them calling back your power and strength.
This is why we love following you ✨💫👏👏🫡
I don't know how you do it Barry! Your ocean scenes are so much more stunning, and clear, with more point of view mastery comes across on the pixels so much more than other sailing youtubers. You really feel more a sense of the remoteness.
Be careful of that leg Barry. Cellulitis Is nothing to mess with. I made a comment in one of your videos when you were talking about getting Cellulitis. I said that I had a bad case of Cellulitis in my right foot back in June 2023. Even though it is much better now (3/15/2024), I still have a very tender ankle on the right side. And the foot is still slightly larger than the left one. It seems that it takes forever to fully recover. Hopefully, you won't have a relapse while at sea. Be careful my friend! I'm happy that you are now back at sea and making some great videos.
Your resilience is inspiring. Great job on the leg recovery and may it get better still. Glad you didn't give up on Shaddy. Hats off to the friends at Bunderberg! Nevermind the beeping, I have a cat that jumps on my face at 4 in the morning. All that cold made for some crisp images. You make such good videos -- thank you!
You love that boat Barry😊
Drive through beer shopping sounds pretty good. Is that heaven?
Thank you for telling your story. Life is really a roller coaster at times.
Good to see that leg is behaving!
We saw the green flash for the first time ever off a P&O ship in the Canaries last autumn :)
Exist elbow is a common problem. Gets gummed up and wont let enough raw water flow through, causing to much pressure and it sneaks past the boots into the coolant.
Great to see you are getting back on track Barry. Good luck and fair winds mate. 🙂
With the lazy jacks, if you have them coming down from the sides of the mast you’ve got a very narrow throat, move them as far out along the spreaders if possible, gives a nice wide open throat and makes mainsail handling much easiet
Your little going away party in Bundaberg looked like the weekly meeting of the Weird Beard club!
We hope you had a restful sleep which is a sailors most hoped for luxury. Especially a solo sailor!
Saw the green flash in the Cook Islands. The nice English bloke , an expat from Wiltshire, said it's as common as out here. However, something for this little Aussie battler.
The Perkins may just need a bit of sorting, viz dirty fuel and air leaks.
The South Pacific...corr....gonna wash that man right outta my hair...
May your seas be blue and the banknotes green.
I noticed you have had your haircut Barry niceone 😀 good to see your ok-ish 🤘
Anchor beer looked great
Nice to see that you are flying over the waves again. Very good image of the video. We are together.
Hello Bary, from Poole. New saucepan! Looks like a nonstick. Have a good weekend
Barry, don't let yourself get cold! Wool hat, good windbreaker! Sleep late, you need it. Good luck my friend!
Well done Berry! For the next longer stop in civilized areas, maybe you should have a checklist and go through the whole boat systematically. Rebuild the engine, rebuild the electrical system, go over the whole rig etc.... Everything to avoid unpleasant surprises, because they almost always come when you least want them.
Because you know we want your best, for completely selfish reasons, we want more of your videos 😂💕😀😄🇸🇪
Top man Barry, your human after all. Damn and blast Perkinson, but another day, all is well. Stay safe my friend.
And thats why I love this channel. I live in civilzation, but everything depends on me. If I dont do it, it doesnt get done. Simple. I was in severe pain in my right knee last week, but had to do everything to take cate of me and pets. By God's grace I managed🎉
Barry, really felt your pain when Perkinson went AWOL. Great video as always. Glad you recovered, Onward and Upward! Love Malcolm and Eileen xx
I was only recently at the Great Keppell Island recently with a mate. We went snorkelling and hiking, it was stunning. I hope you have/had a wonderful time there. 😊
You might have chopped your hair but I haven't seen mine in decades. Woolly caps are fine wear. Fashionable, too. (Depending on with whom you hang.)
Poor Barry, as my late Mum used to say, if it is not one thing, it is something else. And now you have more than just something else to deal with. I can feel your frustrations and it is OK, men can cry especially behind dark sunglasses. It looked the perfect day to set sail, but I bet now on your return your fellow seamen will be pleased to see you again. Just look on the bright side, better this happened now than at some distant island with no facilities.
Looking dapper and debonair.. after the hair and beard trim, Barry! Welcome back to life on the hook...
Such good comments on this video. Sometimes you just need to be reminded of all the good people out there.
Had a look around the Burnett Heads and the marina two weeks out of curiousity to see where you had been. Pretty boring spot! Then took the opportunity to spend a bit of time on Great Keppel Island. Lovely spot.
Nature is neither for you or against you. It just is. Good luck Barry!
Good job Barry
Oh man, Barry, I know just how you felt - I have had a string of problems since January starting off with my motor batteries (I have EP) going to battery heaven because the BMS decided to go belly up! Mind you sailing for the past three months engine-less has been a hoot 😁
Hey, get assessed bay a doctor for compression stockings for your lower legs. If you are allowed to wear them it will greatly help your circulation. Don't sleep on that.
Barry, Well done. Sometimes a pivot (although we hate to return to port, oops I almost said pot) is the best choice. Those pesky jack lines.. Breathe and look after your cellulitis. Then onward!!! Be well & Fair winds.
Hey berry, You're the one. I like your way with words.
And your funny looks, Mannerisms And Comedic ways. You crack me up and make me giggle And that's no B l a r n e y. Thank you mighty brit and catch you next time.❤❤❤
What the heck would our lives be without you, Barry Perrins ??
Maintenance Barry you don't keep on top of it pal! Fair winds.
Sometimes you need to recalibrate your compass of life. Well done.
Excellent timing on tha anchorage !
Enjoy every minute Captain!!
They're gonna find me on my sailboat who knows where , go Barry don't give up
13:26, I had exactly the same thought of green flash running in my mind and then you suddenly started talking about it 😊
Go get’m Barry!
Another Awesome episode Barry ! Safe Sails Buddy
Lost our Rudder south off Great Keppel Island , Waited 7 days for a Toe back to Gladstone !
Love you man stay safe!
good deal Barry, glad to hear from you! can't wait to visit that island :) happy trail to you
Beautiful first Sunrise ❤
Run ONE side of your lazy jacks to the gooseneck and secure, then when you go to hoist your main keep the breeze slightly on the opposite side. A much easier way of hoisting mainsail
Thanks for the video. Life isn't always a bowel of cherries. Best wishes.
Have seen it many times but, only through binoculars. Have to be careful because you can damage eyesight if you look too soon. Sorry, I was talking about the green flash.
Hiya Barry! As a younger sailor, mostly in the Caribbean, I was taught that a green flash was the sunlight's reflection off Bruce Van Der Standt's Heineken bottles floating in his wake. I thought you might find that amusing on the opposite side of the world. great job keeping on!
Reef early reef often!!!
Keep living the dream Barry love the honest videos!
Glad you got the undergrowth down a tad, looked like you were letting yourself go towards the end. Enjoy Keppel mate, seeya! Mike, much further down the coast
It's about time, Matey
Love your video Barry, thanks ! Wishing you good health and good luck on your sails, mate ! Your heart beats music and freedom; no wonder, even the sound of the engine switch on/off: It's the sound of Beethoven's "Fürr Elise" all though in a higher pitch. Greetings and all the best, Frank
Enjoy your sailing ⛵️ sailboat ⛵️ video! Mike from Missouri
Always happy to see your adventures !!❤🎉
Barry..u need to wear compression stockings to prevent chronic swelling and recurrence of infection.
Sailing is fun, once ya get the hang of it. I beleive you got it mastered.
i wish someone would have a great boat to give you like a beautiful new Saddy... blessings take care of yourself
i think he should get a catamaran
Nonsense .. double fees in marinas .. sail like sh..t, pokey little cabins to sleep in and stupid prices .. not a good idea .. he needs a simple, relatively cheap, 40’ ish ex charter, Beneteau, Bavaria or Jeaneau simply fitted out with minimum upkeep, huge spacious cabins and cockpit .. wouldn’t need months in marinas trying to get on top of rust etc and endless equipment failure .. But then, I suppose he wouldn’t be The Old Seadog anymore !!!!!
Great to see you out cruising again. Hope you’re well
Nice one Barry, those hills and bays look like the SW coming out of Plymouth towards Dartmouth, if you take some Hawthorn it will help circulation, when you can get it, 🎉🎉
Hope you’re doing OK with your leg now. It’s a big part of comfort aboard, to be able to make it around deck.
Barry ... I'm an old geezer like you, living in the woods of Brit Columbia Canada.. although not nomadic like you, I count on only one person... me for everything. And like you I have experienced total dismay over what seems o be an assault on my sanity and capacity to carry on... shit hitting the fan for days on end.... throw in prostate cancer and a recent mini-stroke and I think whats next. So I started to pray in my own crude way to Jesus for a little help along the way...thats when I realized I'm really not alone. Wishing you all the best in your endeavors ... and as they say in your old home town... stiff upper lip chaps, carry on !!!
Barry you are fantastic ! I don't think there is anything you can't do. I always look forward to your adventure. ⛵
Had a hydrovane whilst sailing long time ago, a very reliable steering aid! Thanks for your video's. Sailed the reef in 89'. Sailed past Bundaberg, could see burning sugar canes through the night. Makes great rum! And I love you harmonica playing. No GPS, but the admiralty charts cost a bundle ! Had some chats with the coast guard, cruising license had expired, so we took care to have our documents in order. ☺
Getting a newer boat is in the near future, time to start looking and not wait until you’re stranded. 👍🏻
Once again we saw the green flash Pism Beach ca 35 th anniversary
Hey Barry 👋👍
Wow you had me worried there Barry. Had to stop watching to catch my breath. 🥰
Always love the new videos Barry!
Hang in there old man it’s going to get better. You are going to be alright.Don’t take offense at the old man I am 59.Jay from Mississippi.
Hey Barry, good to see you back on the Sea... I have a 'Bad' leg as well for a different reason so I understand... Shaddy is looking good... Hope to see the next vid where the weather is much warmer... Fair Winds...
Good one Barry, well done mate, cheers.
Still loving your videos after all these years!!

Another Great video Barry. Keep living the dream. And safe travels 🍻
Now I have this stuck in my head. "Bye bye Bunderburg, Bunderburg, bye bye" ........
I do enjoy always your videos ❤❤
I Don't Like To Hear You Are In Pain With Your Leg, But, You Don't Give Up With What You Love And Love You Back Barry, Wendy
Hey kids, when you're sailing the Queensland coast have a look out for Barry on White Shadow. Like you he's a longtime TH-camr Adventures of an Old Seadog,. He's sailed around the world and has a fund of great stories and I'm sure he would love to meet you.
At the curry i got a ´´The Doors´´ feeling.
Whoopee…Finally yer “Out & About” again👍 Continue to Stay Safe and Enjoy 😎
