DIVERS REACT TO DIVER STUCK INSIDE A CAVE PLUS A REBREATHER FAILURE

  • Today we react to one of our recent dives at Jug Hole in Florida.
    The cave is known for two small restrictions and the question we are trying to answer is "Can BIG guys cave dive?"
    During the dive Woody's rebreather had an issue causing the dive to end, the best thing is that everything was caught on video!

Hope to see more of you in videos either diving with them, or even of dives you do with others that you maybe send them to share. Thatd be cool. Glad you all got in and out safely.

      You looked like a deer caught in headlights that 1st shot lol. I don't know anything about diving , the ocean , a cave, never been in the ocean. I am petrified of water over my head. 3 things...water over my head , being hit by a train or being struck by lightning. I know , stupid random but it is what it is lol. I love sharks , all sharks , they are beautiful and they are powerful but im not going anywhere near the place they call home. I have no clue why I said all that but my question is. What causes a flow like that so deep underground? Also , is that super fast flow what keeps the water so clear? Like a home aquarium? All of this is fascinating to me.

    I've heard a ton of stories about cave diving, but this is the first time I've ever seen an actual cave dive. I can see the appeal.
    My best friend and I went scuba diving, it was our very first time. Also we were staying in the Dominican Republican. We were like 13yrs old and only dove like 25-35 ft. No tunnels, we could see the sun the whole time, and we were in wide open water. Colorful fish and all that. I got to hold a star fish. I put him back where I found him, of course.
    Looking back at it now however, there's a few things that make me feel uneasy. First, there were 2 packages the dive instructor offered us. Beginner level (which we chose.) or we could get licensed to dive down to roughly 175-200ft. He came to our hotel pool to go over how to dive and had us practice with the o2 tanks. At which he offered the more advanced class again. We were only gonna be in the DR for 2 more days, but he was not worried about it. He was sure we could kinda half-ass our way thru class, training our and _required_ dives.
    Seeing all the checks and balances that go into a SAFE and proper dive. Makes me scared to think what if we took him up on his offer for the advanced class?

    • @ryanhampson673
      @ryanhampson673 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yea….The non decompression limit for recreational divers is 130 feet and you only get like 7 mins at the depth of memory serves….175-200 feet is way deep and getting into the realm of technical diving. If you were breathing just air you would be pretty heavily narc’ed. Sounds like you had a great experience diving but the instructors attitude is pretty suspect..Just give you an idea the PADI deep divers course takes you to 130 feet.

    Do you ever get a tad bit anxious when in those tight spaces? Seems like that's where I'd probably get a little amped up and might make a mistake. I've been away from the Tube for almost a week so I have some catching up to do with your vids. Hope you guys are having a great weekend! ~ Brian

    • @DIVETALK
      @DIVETALK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Thank you Brian. I always thought I would be a terrible cave diver because I couldn’t imagine going through tight spaces like the one you see on the video but I think that if you follow the right progression you are just ready by the time you find yourself on that position. So by the time I was stuck there my heart didn’t even raise a little bit, I was really in “engineer mode”, asking myself “what’s the best way to make it through this thing?” And I was so focused on solving the problem that I had no time to think about being stuck in a tight hole underwater 😁
      Also, welcome back!

      @@DIVETALK I know your response is a month old. But I hope you see this. I am thrilled that you are not scared, and capable of experiencing so many fantastic things! Just PLEASE BE AWARE, of how the rib cage collapses, AND EXPANDS! You can literally make it in holes, that you cannot BACK OUT of, because of the way our rib cages are designed. There are examples of people losing their lives, because of this. Going into a small hole, that they could SQUEEZE THROUGH, but did not have room on the other side, to turn their body around, to squeeze back through, backwards. Because you cannot suck your ribs in as far as you can squeeze them in. Just please keep this in mind. Make note in your engineering notes.lol You guys are so great! So enjoying your videos!

    • @DIVETALK
      @DIVETALK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@wordswritteninred7171 thank you. I appreciate your concerns, there is a method to the madness. The main reason why as a rule we don’t go through restrictions that require us to take our gear off (a.k.a. “No Mount”) is that we always want to have that as an option. If I can make it through with a rebreather and two tanks on I can always make it back out without any gear on. So in this particular scenario let’s say I make it through and then I get stuck coming back, no problem, I can remove my left tank and try again, if that doesn’t work I remove my right tank, if that doesn’t work remove my rebreather. And I know you could argue that one could get in a super tight spot where you couldn’t even remove your gear but I just don’t go into situations like that. We study maps and watch video of caves before we dive them, there is a reason why cave diving training is grueling and extensive, we don’t “wing” anything.

    Late to this but I just have to comment on the friendship and commraderie you guys are always showing each other and fellow divers. One of the reasons I come back to these videos is the refreshing display of healthy and secure masculinity. This sport is hardcore! So many aspects are physically and mentally challenging. It requires a confidence and fortitude that in many sports breeds gross egos. Not on Dive Talk! At every turn you guys are always emphasizing caution, patience, safety, and training. Recognizing and acknowledging that there will always be some vulnerability and risk no matter how well you prepare; and that to err and panic isn't pathetic or weak, it's human. Great content guys, keep it up!

    I definitely would like to see more of your personal dive videos! That was intense! I was so worried about Gus getting stuck though, I think I watch too many mrballen videos 😆 just make sure you never end up on his show (other than for a collaboration which would be the greatest thing in the world- that really would be awesome to do a joint video both channels post. It would no doubt bring a lot of new subscribers to your page since the cave stuff is mrballens most popular videos)

    9:22 onwards:
    1) Your fins being up high has nothing to do with upsetting the silt. That is just a nice byproduct. It is because that's how trim is supposed to be. Trim is not about the silt, but rather about being as hydrodynamic as possible. You need to have feet up high, because otherwise either your fins would either not be parallel to your body position, creating additional drag, or you'd be killing your ankles. Also it's pretty comfortable position to start your frog kick from.
    2) With the current in the cave, those formations are definitely not thousands of years old. Seeing how the sand is being carried away couple seconds later, if you actually dragged your belly on the bottom, it's within the realm of possibility, that your marks wouldn't be visible by the time you were going back.

I'm not a diver but really love you guys, your videos and your community, and I'm hoping to get OW certified as soon as the lockdown in Australia lifts. This video was awesome and would love to go cave diving one day. Thanks heaps and appreciate what you're doing!

    My dad is a diving instructor, one of his students and good buddy was a heavy fellow. He earned himself the nick name XXL. My
    dad used to be on the heavy side as well back then, what he didn't know is that we called him "deep sea buoy" ("Hochseeboje" in German, it's a lot funnier) behind his back. 😂

    I gotta tell you I absolutely love this kind of humility ! If people can watch this video and still continue to judge when you guys are honest with the reactions , then they are just haters or trolls. Awesome video and honesty about learning , willing to be not the best and being ok with an uncomfortable process ! Little back story I have zero dive experience my history is fighting , gaming and counseling youth. So I purely enjoy this because of both of your passions ! Keep it up, you have much more then just diving fans in your base ! Blessings and safe swimming !
