Finally!! Someone perfectly explains EXACTLY how to set this pedal up. ISP should literally pay you to write their product manuals.
Well, not “perfectly” I’m afraid.
The diagram provided here is wrong and will not function properly. I know because I just bought one and quickly followed this information instead of the correct ISP diagram.
The correct way is as follows:
Top right-Guitar Out
Middle right-Guitar In
Bottom right-Dec In
Left side-Dec Out (correct)
Guitar out goes to the front of the amp, Decimator In goes to your “send”, and Decimator Out goes to your “return “
Include any pedal’s accordingly

@@richardt9102 I have another question - he puts this pedal right after the guitar and before any distortion or overdrive. Shouldn't you put this pedal after the Distortion/overdrive to control the noise coming out of those pedals? I currently have my Rocktron Hush ( and DD2 delay) connected to Send/Return and it seems to be working ok, but it's over 20 years old and I'm thinking new technologies should work better?
I tested both.. I think the NS2 is the better choice. I never have issues with it, it doesnt suck tone, sounds the same as the gstring and costs wayy less. just my 2cents.

I have owned a Decimator G-string and now I have a NS-2 I run in 4 cable method. Works just as well as the G string. The G string is just 4 times more expensive.
Yeah, dude didn't talk about the FX loop option on the NS-2. Video was well made, but this was overlooked.

Yup… same here. Got rid of the overpriced one and kept the NS-2 and just learned how to Use the 4 cable or “X” pattern. All “noisy” pedals get tamed and the modulation effects use the send and return go to both amps loops,taming my high gain amps

I will forget Boss NS-2 only if the G-string asks the same price haha.. Currently price comparison in my country is IDR 3,351 millions (USD 239) vs IDR 975 thousands (USD 69). Hence the boss will still stay.

I hear your comments, and respect them, but these two pedals are in two different worlds. If you're trying to get the professional equipment to have a professional set up the Dec2 is the only way to go. If you're just playing at home and don't need to worry about interference or noise the Boss is fine. 👍

We have products such as that, they are the result of being "jack of all trades, master of none". I would rather have a unit that is developed and designed for a specific task, rather than an amp that has 10 or more task developed and designed, causing it to not be strong in one part but mediocre in all.

actually I was considering designing something that just notches out 60hz instead of gating the whole signal.
Hughes and Kettner Grandmeiser deluxe 40 tube amp has a built in noise gate. It is called noise gate but it is actually a noise suppressor. I'm happy with this amp. BTW, i dont think BOSS NS2 is that bad as described. I also have NS2 used when I'm using my pedalboard instead of the amp preamp. NS2 cuts off hums well in my opinion and i dont feel any tone detriment. Check my youtube channel MONIZAG for videos recorded on grandmeister 40

On the positive notes, very good hook-up explanation. On the other side, without testing NS-2 side to side it looks like decimator shill. You can connect NS-2 the same way as "decimator channel" with FX loop and NS-2 is a solid gate.
I don't know. I love my NS-2 and it always gets it done. I don't believe it's a "tone sucker" at all. I'm sure one's setup has a lot to do with it. I'm using very height gains. The Decimator II is a solid pedal, but I have to be skeptical when someone says a classic, almost iconic, pedal like the NS-2 is actually "bad". If it's no good, how did it achieve such a status and following. The NS-2 has been doing very well for a long time.

@@EveOfChaos Me too. Didn't even know until about 10 years ago about the X pattern. Using the X pattern I couldn't imagine another noise suppressor being so much better to justify spending more money. It works great in the X pattern.
I gotta be completely honest with you… i have used an NS-2 since 2003 and have been extremely happy with it and honestly absolutely nothing and i mean nothing has ever convinced me other wise, although im not a purist and im adaptable to change, over the years nothing has made me think twice until i watched this video… as a fellow youtuber and gear reviewer i gotta say on one pedal i thought i couldn’t be budged on i think you budged me… i deffinitly want to see what this pedal can do for myself… I wasn’t all that impressed by the first isp due to the outputs not being there and the versatility being vacant but i think this pedal has finally hit the mark… thank you for your excellent review - Kevin

@@tanker1960 I've been using the NS-2 in the X pattern (aka 4 wire option) for 10 years and it's perfect for me. Maybe there's something better out there, but why try and fix what isn't broken.

By the time I came across this video I already had the regular Dec II. I was gonna sell it and get a G string II but after further research, it seems that it's actually better (albeit more costly) to hook two regular Dec IIs through the link out link in ports on the top. Yes, it's pretty much like the G string but with one advantage, you now have two knobs for suppression. One at the beginning that tracks your direct guitar, then it goes through the link out to the other Dec II in the effects loop that also gets the direct tracking expect it has it's own individual control. They compare it to their rack mount unit. Either way ISP Decimators rock. You can't go wrong either way.

Interested to try a isp asap. Currently using ns2 seems fine and like that I can adjust the attack. My real question is isp going to be better for tone. I don't use it live strictly only for studio and tracking di signals and sometimes with an aby one to amp one to di.

I have been using two noise gates, but recently, I tried recconecting the NS-2 at the front and fx loop. It worked much better. I am doing 2 things which are counter acting the tone suck. One, I am using the shortest possible cable at the NS-2 send to amp input. The other is the Empress ParaEQ which is patched at the amp fx send to NS-2 return. My Mesa Nomad 100 has a parallel fx loop currently. I use a Two Notes Torpedo Captor 8 to send a line out to stereo fx and drive stereo amps. I am still considering the ISP Decimator II G string or SMG Cock Blocker.

I bought a Fethead Phantom, and a Rupert Neve 545 Primary Source Enhancer and I gainstaged both and they don’t sound different at all really compared to the original signal.
So would this device change anything for me for reducing the noise floor more by a huge difference? I’m looking for huge difference noise reduction hardware for recording vocals.
My setup: RME Fireface 802 Interface, and Rode NT2A
I like this pedal! I haven’t use any other noise gate/suppressors. I feel that it can add a certain digital resonance if you want but if you don’t want it, then you can dial it down to where the noise is barely noticeable with my ear next to the amp. I use an MXR Iso brick to power it. It has one weird issue for me; if I don’t have the pedal pressed to ‘Off’ when powering it on, then it doesn’t work properly for me.
What’s it like when you play with dynamics? Such as playing a heavy tune and then playing a clean passage with your gtr volume backed off.
Very interesting product. Will this affect pick slide? Alot of the stuff I play has pick slides and I don't want it to be cut/removed

Will this work with a Boss Katana MK2 amp? I have the Diezel VH 4 2, a Fender delay a Flamma reverb and an MXR Micro Flanger.
That noise (5:33) doesn't come out if you do not use ISP pedal. I'm using the same amp with same pedal. Yes there is a hum on the background by nature of tube amp (channel II - Petrucci settings). But It's not absolutely as annoying as that noise before ISP has turned on. It seems that ISP is creating the noise and reducing it when you turned it on. Wondering anyone else has experienced the same ?
This noise comes from the guitar...
2 Questions:
1. Where would you put "the drop" in a signal chain?
2. Would the G-String still make sense over the normal Decimator 2 if I do not have Effects in the Effects loop at all?

I would probably put The Drop close to first in the signal chain. Always best to try different locations though.
If you don't use the G-String you may get unwanted noise from the amp and other pedals after the Decimator. Really depends on what your setup is like. High gain amps really benefit from having the suppression in the FX loop. If you're running all your FX before the amp input, I assume such is not the case for you.
Any suggestions for getting rid of amp noise, buzzing sounds etc when just plugging straight into the amp and playing the clean channel?

Generally, I'll put a wah, Tubescreamer, and/or compressor in front of the amp. Everything else will go in the FX loop.

Great review of an awesome product. Special shout out for the detailed diagram with arrows showing the proper connections for DEC IN/DEC OUT. ISP's user manual did not have a lot of info on the G String and I have even seen other reviewers with the ISP's DEC IN DEC OUT not correctly connected. it took me a minute to figure out how to utilize all of the connectors. I use 2 of these monsters for a stereo setup (2 Peavey XXL solid state monsters) and a huge pedalboard. That pedal took INSANE amp/gain noise and instantly quieted all of it by turning that 1 knob about half way up. Quick story - I did try the BOSS NS-2 (my Sweetwater rep suggested the ISP but I didn't want to drop almost $250.00 on noise reduction.) Long story short - the BOSS NS-2 was a tone sucker; my entire rig and effects and dual 4 by 12 PRS Harmonic Generator cabinets sounded like they had quilts wrapped tightly around everything. No bueno. Quickly returned the BOSS and pulled the trigger on the ISP and my jaw just hit the floor. It feels like you're overpaying for a noise reduction pedal UNTIL you hear your high gain rig without all of that hiss and buzz, then this thing becomes worth it's weight (and it IS a heavy pedal, lots of tech going on in there) in GOLD! Thanks so much for this!

I bought both to see which one i liked better. The ns2 works flawlessly as does the g-string. Very little tone suck on thr ns2 and about the same for the decimator. I returned the decimator because the of the price point. Just get the ns2 and save a hundred bucks.
Awesome review. How is it on the leads? I recently picked up a Zuul+ for the 4cbm, but I'm not finding a spot that will allow me to have singing leads. Playing through an Engl Fireball.

@ManBunMetalHead it works fine. But as you mentioned, it's just the noise gate. So the noise is stuttering at the end of a ring note instead of smoothing out. I've tried different settings but no luck. That annoys me a lot. So I'm waiting for the G String to see if it can solve that issue.
This is really a great video; so is the one about setting up the Boss ES-8 with the 4 cable method. But....how do you use the DII G-S with a Boss ES-8 and an amp Fx loop? That's what I'm trying to do....

More than likely you'd probably need to link them to get the same result. Reason being the second Decimator in the FX loop will react better with a clean signal rather than a signal that has any sort of FX (pedals or preamp) applied to it.
Thanks for this video, I bought this pedal now. You said you sometimes you put your wah before this pedal. Does that mean your guitar is plugged into your wah and then from your wah you plug into the guitar input of the Decimeter II pedal?

Hey - how are you incorporating it into/with the es 8? Do you use it in conjunction with the guitar as a volume insert 4 cable method or without the amp input as a loop?
I use the 4 cable method with the ES-8. Here are a list of my connections.
Guitar -> ISP Gtr IN
ISP Gtr OUT -> ES-8 Input
ES-8 Volume OUT -> Amp Input
Amp FX Loop OUT -> ISP Dec IN
ISP Dec OUT -> ES-8 Volume IN
ES-8 OUT -> Amp FX Loop IN

It would be nice if the video shows how this pedal handles the sustain and dynamics when, for example, the guitar is used for sound like violin.
Does it really suppress the noise that accompanies the tone or does it cut them together like a noise gate pedal does?????
What about the other 2 ISP noise supp. pedals, like the I and II, are they plenty good also? What if you are not a high gain metal player, just a loud classic rocker, playing with huge crunchy tones? Will it help with hum, string noise, small clunky sounds like when changing chords, etc..What if you dont want it to cut of right away? What if you want to hold a huge note or chord for a while? I often do that.. I dont want the notes or chords to suddenly stop every damn time.

hey man! awesome video! just curious if i am running this pedal through the fx loop of my amp and using an effects processor as well with an fx loop...where in my signal chain would i throw in a loop pedal? ive got the boss rc3 and i cant figure out where to put this for the life of me
also the way im using the decimator is with the input monitoring method that way any time i switch to a clean channel it automatically lays off some of that gate
If you using the Decimator G-String I would recommend putting the RC3 in the FX loop after the Decimator. That's the only way to bypass the noise gating/reduction of the Decimator.

Hey man, like me I can see your using this with a Boss-es8. Out of curiosity how have you got it wired up with that? Are you using it in a es8 loop or just apart of your gtr input and fx loop signal chain
I use the 4 wire method so I can place my FX before the input or in FX loop.

I would probably take the full size Zuul. I've switched from the Decimator G String to the mini Zuul and haven't looked back.

The Decimator ii is a good pedal. Overpriced & overrated though. But that's just my opinion. Results always vary. I thought it was amazing for bass guitar. A bit of a tone suck for high gain guitar situation. I owned 2 Decimator ii and a G-string. They all sounded the same.
Hello i use an ES8 too with a mesaboogie mark V. Could you share how you place your Gstring in this setup? Do you use one loop for the Gstring on ES8 or do you put of ES8 loop for a use with 4 cables method? Thanks for support !
Very nice detail with showing the diagram, but what if was to be connected to a series of pedal going into a looper/switch, how would you do that?
I'd probably put the Guitar circuit after the looper.
I use an Electro Harmonix Super Switcher. There's an unnmbered insert loop in that which is designed for pedals that are always kept on. I have my effects in the following order: Compression, tremolo, overdrive, pitch shifter, delay, reverb.
The compressor is the only pedal that gives a hiss of any kind and maybe the pitch shifter rattles a little on the 2nd octave up setting which I believe to be normal.

Yes, I'd connect the Guitar In/Out as normal and as long as the Dec In/Out loop is before the delay and reverb, you should be good.
Question. My amp does not have an FX loop. The amp is on a clean channel and I'm using distortion pedals for my main sound. Would this pedal work if I set up the guitar and amp as normal but I just put all my distortion pedals in between the Dec out and the Dec in? I'm presuming it would first take out the noise of the guitar and than also the noise of the pedals, right? Or am I missing something?

Metal players need it yes cause it blocks it out amazingly for those kinda players... The ns2 you'll still hear some buzz and u do notice a tone change but only a fraction really.
You can tweek on ur amp too to gain a heavier tone when you've activated it already..

My tube screamer still causes feedback regardless if I put it before after the decimator. Help! The decimator quiets it a bit, but the feedback is still there.

To my knowledge ISP decimator is a noise gate, not a noise suppressor the "linearized time vector processing" is just a "optmised expander" etc= the way the gate open/close. : "The Decimator II also features improvements in the expander tracking with our new Linearized Time Vector Processing™. This novel improvement provides a more linear release time-constant response for the exponential release curve of the downward expander. While the expander is exponentially increasing expansion and dynamically changing its response to fit the envelope of the input signal, the release response remains linear over a given time period. This increases the smoothness of the release response of the expander and provides the most transparent release response of any noise reduction system available and virtually eliminates any release ripple for incredibly smooth decay of longer sustained notes."
How do I plug in if I want to go directly into the amp with no pedals other than the isp decimator?

What's the difference between a normal Decimator II and Decimator II G-string?
He explained that in the video. The normal one is just standard Decimator noise suppresion, the G-string has the separate Decimator channel that allows you to suppress noise in the amp's FX loop based on the direct guitar signal.

Any suppressor usually works best in the FX loop especially on a high gain amp. But you could put it anywhere.
Interesting - so the Decimator is digital whereas the NS-2 is analog? It looks like the patching scheme is essentially the same as for the NS-2 (Guitar In = Input, Guitar Out = Send, Dec In = Return, Dec Out = Output).
How does this affect sustain like bending notes for example?
It can certainly have a negative effect. I've been using the Fortin Zuul Mini lately, which I think is better than the Decimator, but can still cut off a sustained note if you're not careful.

Seems to be 2 clear camps - ns2 and g string. But how does this change with the new ns-1x?
We don't use other pedals. We also use wireless on our guitars. So would I put a wireless in the guitar and where would I plug the reciever? Guitar in? Show us the buttons so we can see a set up. So here is my guess 1) wireless transmitter in guitar 2) wireless receiver into the G 2 (where?) there are 3 or 4 inputs 3) have a cord from the pedal going out to my amp. Then we do not use mic'd amps. 4) We have a DI out of the back of the amp that goes to a snake to the mixing board. Does this sound correct?
I wanted to ask, but if I don't use any distortion pedals then I would use the guitar out straight to the amp? The rest would be the same it appears.
What if I have no FX loop on the amp? Is this pedal usable in any way?

You can use it without a pedalboard, but it's intention isn't to get rid of feedback, so it probably won't help much.

Not that I know of. Typically, feedback is caused by having the guitar too close to the amp or issues somewhere in the FX chain causing a feedback loop.
