    Great presentation, no nonsense and awesome tone. The only thing missing was a description of how you set up both pedals. I believe the only advantage of the Decimator is that you can link two pedals in a stereo setup, or use one in front and one in the FX loop. You could probably do that with two Sentry's but I'm not sure how different settings on both pedals might affect the output. Thanks for making the video! \m/

  • @johnathan.jerusik
    @johnathan.jerusik 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I have had the decimator and I currently own the sentry. Yes the sentry has more bells and whistles but what I found is the sentry does good with gain pedals before and after the pedal. The decimator does great with gain after. For some reason the decimator with hotter pickups or boosts, gain or fuzz pedals in front of it you need the crank the threshold up alot more then the signal starts getting really choppy. I actually do far prefer the sentry over the decimator.

    • @TheNocturnalEvil
      @TheNocturnalEvil 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's because the Decimator is a buffered bypass noise gate. When you put gain and fuzz pedals in the loop of Decimator it buffers them and buffering up gain and fuzz elevates their noise levels.
      Sentry fares better because in its default setting it works in hardwired bypass mode, which although doesn't buffer the effects has its own demerit of sucking the tone to some extent.
      I used to own both of them but recently I've switched to the Janglebox J-Gate, it's a true bypass analog optical noise gate. Since it's an analog true bypass noise gate it doesn't suffer from the tone suck issues of the sentry. Due to its all optical operation it doesn't suffer from the latency issues that impacts other noise gate pedals. Of course compared to the decimator and sentry it does take more space on the pedalboard but that's wasn't a big issue for me.

      @@TheNocturnalEvil I'm going to have to check that pedal out. I have the sentry still and I just picked up the gstring decimator 2 to do my own ab test. That's really awesome to know! Thank you!

      @@johnathan.jerusik I am wondering what is the result of you comparison? I am trying to decide what gate should I buy, I am considering deci-mate G micro / decimator 2 G string or Sentry.

    • @johnathan.jerusik
      @johnathan.jerusik 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@OneSipToDrunkenness hey man!!! So I still have the sentry. 2 reasons why. The decimarmtor is a noise suppressor vs the sentry is a gate. So you can set the sentry to basically when your playing, it doesn't effect the sustain. And when you stop it clamps and it's quite. I actually have done a demo on my personal page. I have owned both decimators and yes they were nice but they didn't work as well as I wanted them too. 2 the sentry is wicked versatile! It has the gate mode and the hiss mode. Plus 3 knobs to really dial in what you want to clamp and when. And it has yhe whole tone print library. So if you want to play straight metal they have a tone print. If you want to tweak it and dial out certain frequencies you can do that too

    Great shoot out, you've helped me decide what one to go for! Quick question about routing for most effective noise suppression...
    My Set up now is Guitar, tuner, Boss NS-2 then Maxon OD808 into the front of EVH5150. I have a delay in the FX loop.
    How would I run the Sentry in the Fx loop as well if I wanted to get rid of that annoying high gain hum that is always there when the high gain channel is activated, am I missing something with the FX loop, or will the sentry do the job just doing a loop infront of the amp with the overdrive in the loop of the sentry?... About to bite the bullet and buy one!

    • @TurboShred13
      @TurboShred13 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All To Ruin This is the best way. From guitar to tuner to maxon to Sentry in. Sentry send to front of amp. Amp fxloop Send to Sentry return. Sentry out to delay to Amp fxloop Return. Shouldnt need the NS-2 anymore.

      I own both. The Decimator is better overall. I use the Decimator in the loop to kill amp noise and the Smart Gate out front. If I switched them around the Decimator kills it up front but the Smart Gate doesn’t work too hot in the loop.

    6:17 I think, you should put the pedal in the EF loops to test if the pedal colored the tone and then switch off the EF loop, instead of just switching off the pedal because by doing this the signal will be still passing through the buffer's pedal (decimator) even though is turned off. Sentry is true by pass, so the signal may decay but just for cable length.

      Speaking from experience with the Precision Drive, it is pretty much the best drive pedal I've ever used. It's like a low pass, OD, midrange EQ, and gate all-in-one pedal. The gate on it is pretty snappy; like an immediate cutoff once you hit that threshold.

    Looks like you're not using the "Key In and Out" on the ISP G-string.. So, you're really just comparing a Sentry to a Decimator II (which works best when using 2 linked together).
    The Sentry is a good "front end" gate (like the MXR Smart Gate), but the G-string (used in the loop, with the Guitar In and Out) is unbeatable.

      That's exactly what I was thinking! I'd like to say no if you tweak it a bit in the software, or leave it as default settings. I think I'm gonna go for the Sentry because it's a lot cheaper and more customizable.

    As for now:
    TC = 90€
    G-String = 300€
    So I went for the sentry

    The ISP Decimator is too expensive just for the purpose to remove some noise. Contrariwise, the Sentry has three controls you can dial depending of your signal chain and your playing style. The TonePrint function seems to be also a great feature.

      You can also think of it differently: ISP does more with only one knob ))

    You need to speak up. I have to turn the volume up and down when you talk and play. Really annoying.
