  • In this video I'm making a batch of Montessori kids activity boards using a homemade template, a 2x4 and some supplies from the DIY store! 👇 Links to tools/materials below👇

    Sorry about the audio miss-match in some parts of the video. My transition from iMovie to DaVinci Resolve has not been without its complications! 😬

    ABOUT THE BUILD
    First off I needed to make a router template as I wanted to get as many activity boards as I could out of one 2x4. The template was made of 9mm MDF with the cut outs made using the drill press, and finished off with a chisel to give the perfect edge.
    I then used CA glue to attach two thin strips of Pine as rails to hold the template in the correct position on the 2x4. The template was made oversized so that there was room for the router base and some clamps.
    Once the template was made I clamped it to the 2x4 and used the drill press again to remove the bulk of the waste material from each of the pieces. I also used the drill press to drill the holes for the threaded inserts to be glued later on.
    Once most of the waste material had been removed I went back with a flush trim bit in my router to remove the remaining material and create nice smooth edges. I changed the bit in the router for a round over bit before passing over everything to ensure there were no sharp edges for the kids to hurt themselves on.
    The individual activity boards were then cross cut out of the 2x4 and had the new edges rounded over on the router table. Then everything was sanded up to 120 grit using a homemade flap sander and a random orbital sander clamped in my bench vise.
    I used 5 minute epoxy to glue in place some M6 threaded inserts before cutting down some M6 threaded rod to 30mm sections and removing any sharp edges using a drill driver and metal file. These were then epoxied into 3 of the threaded inserts on each activity board so they could be used with the nuts without coming undone.
    I wasn't sure if there was much point in putting any finish on it but in the end I decided to put on a couple of coats of OMSO PolyX mainly because there was some interesting grain and I thought it would be nice to bring it out a bit!
    So that was it. I made 5 in total as the 2x4 had quite a few faults in it, but the template means I am now well setup to do another production run once I run out of these!
    Thanks for watching!

    Apologises for the audio issues during the faster time lapses - I am moving from iMovie to DaVinci Resolve and above certain speeds the audio no longer gets any faster, so does not sync up with the video 😕

    It is great board to motivate kids to woodwork afterwards.

    I like the idea of this toy, thanks for sharing. (and thanks for noting the audio issues, I was wondering if I was going crazy for a bit)

      Of course! Thanks for watching and letting me know 👍 I'm not sure there is a way around the audio issues TBH so I might need to change up my video style a bit to get around it 😬

      @@mikeparsonscc there has to be! Or change your editing software i use Vegas movie studio and it has no issues with speeding up the sound 😁

      I have spent a couple of weeks learning Resolve so I'm bedded in now! Most software can only speed up to a certain point otherwise the audio doesn't sound like anything but white noise, this video has parts above 4000% speed so I might be asking a bit much 🤣🤣

      @@mikeparsonscc when I do things more than 400 percent i usually just remove the sounds altogether, so maybe give that a try

    Amazing!! Do you sell these?

    This was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much. What’s the name of the metal piece that got glued into the wood first? The bit before you cut the threaded rod and glued that in

      Great to hear it 👍 They are called "Threaded Inserts", I used the M6 sized ones 👌☺️

    Can you list the size of the screws and treading insects thank you

    • @mikeparsonscc
      @mikeparsonscc  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The inserts and screws were all M6 size. Screws/bolts are between 20mm and 30mm long (or can be whatever you want depending on how deep you drill the holes) 👍

    Any chance you'd be willing to provide the dimensions and bit sizes (drill, router, forster) you used for this project?

    • @mikeparsonscc
      @mikeparsonscc  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The wood is a 2x4 cut to whatever length you need. The inserts are M6 sized so a 9mm drill bit was used I think. It completely depends what size bolts/inserts you want to use 👍

       @Mike Parsons Custom Creations Thanks i was curious what size Forstner bit you used as well as the router round-over and straight bits

    • @mikeparsonscc
      @mikeparsonscc  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chriswilliams3611 it was the biggest forstner bit I had at the time - probably a 30mm. I don't remember the dimensions of the router bits sorry. It's not all that important to be honest, just use what you have or what you like the look of 👍
