  • Here is a quick video showing me learning some new woodworking techniques by making a wooden number 5 to celebrate 5000 followers on my Instagram account! 👇 Links to tools/materials below👇

You can make any numbers and letters using these techniques, as long as you can print it for the template you can make it!
I have a bit of a tradition over on Instagram that involves making a new follower count piece each time I pass a milestone. I use it as a way to force myself to learn new techniques and do something a little bit different. You can follow me on Instagram here: / mikeparsonscc 😇
The last time I used kerf-bending techniques to create the number 1000 so this time I replaced the "1" with a "5". Turns out in the meantime my skills have improved and so have the materials I use! 🤓
It turned out really awesome and I'm very happy with it, I love the contrast and the way the wood looks when cut at a sharp angle.

    BUILD PROCESS
I had some leftover pen blanks that I picked up a few years ago and never did anything with so I layered them together to give some nice contrast. Glued them up and let them dry.
I decided to make it double width and try to get contrast in those layers too. Unfortunately because I had not planned this second layer very well this didn't really work but it was a learning experience.
I glued together the two layers after cutting then on the table saw cross cut sled. Clamped them up and let them dry again.
I created an MDF template of the final design and used it to trace an outline onto the wooden block. Over at the bandsaw I cut the shape out being careful to not go over the lines.
I then temporarily stuck the template to the piece and used my homemade router table with two different flush trim bits (it was too wide for one of them) to remove the excess and get the final shape.
After a bit of sanding I finished it using OSMO Polyx and it was done!

    2 things
1 I loved how you cut the inside of the 5 on the bandsaw it was extremely satisfying
2 when you hit 15k followers will you make a new 1 & 5 or use the ones you’ve already got 😁😁.

I know, right? I was so happy I got to cut out the hole in one pass 😍
I have so much fun with these learning exercises that I'm sure I will remake make both the 1 and the 5. Although I might turn it into 15,051 so I still get to look at them all! 🤣

Whats the point of the two strips joined to the piece when planning?

My planer has problems with snipe (no matter how well I try to set it up) and because the strips of wood are longer they effectively increase the length of the piece going through the planner. This way the snipe cuts into the scrap pieces at the ends of the cut and not the main project piece.
It is not ideal but otherwise I would need to make all my pieces 20cm longer and trim the snipe off afterwards. This way saves on hardwood wastage 😊
