Woodworking Skill Builder Games for Children | How to Make

  • As many of you know my kids are out in the workshop with me almost all the time. Ethan, #DIYEthan, is out with me the most and he is always hammering, driving screws or gluing something together. For one of his Christmas gifts I decided to make him a finger dexterity game that doubles as woodworking for him to play while he is in the shop with me.
These three fine motor skill games are made using some Ash hardwood that I had laying around and a bunch of nuts and bolts laid out in a pattern to help him, or any other kids, to gain some finger strength and coordination. One game uses some carriage bolts, tee nuts and regular hex nuts to allow the children to spin the nuts with their hand. Another activity uses some t-inserts and different size screws to teach the kids to use a screwdriver properly. The last game uses some more t-inserts and hex bolts to teach kids to use a box or adjustable wrench.
I understand that not everyone is blessed to have a shop full of fancy power tools but this project can easily be made with a cheap pine 2x4, a hand saw and a drill if that is all you have. The effort of making these games for your kids or family members will be well worth it.
NOTE: Not all kids are the same, make sure the person you are building this for is old enough for such a toy.**

My sons are too old to react the way your son did when he opened the box...love it, miss it. Guess I'll have to wait for grand kids to capture the moment.
    Tyler...cherish that squeal of delight!

One of the absolute best videos you've done. Not from technique or complexity, or even creative hamming it up (for that the flagpole takes the top spot).. but it is heartwarming to see you as a Dad who loves and wants to show and share with his kids. Thanks. Hope Ethan gets years of pleasure from them and ultimately gives you a run for your money in the shop later.. lol.

Since I read *TopFineWoodworking. Com* , I think nothing will ever surpass it as an outstanding woodworking book. The book consists of attractive images as well as drawings and also reader-friendly text. I consider this book a "must have" since it supplies a broad range of information on just about everything working with woodworking and does it quite well.?

Good idea, one Christmas, I prepped and cut a simple ladder/staircase for the trampoline. I laid the wood out with a bow on it under the tree and my son and I built it together. One our favorite Christmas gifts. It's still standing too!

that is cool.............. i have to admit, i bought my son his first 18 volt cordless drill at age 6. Why? He kept stealing mine. LOL. funny all the tool ideas i needed to keep his little fingers safe. He is now 18 and can build most things with wood, can weld and do full engine swaps in full size vehicles . Seeing your little boy sure brings back memories. you have years of fun ahead of you.

This is a superb wood working book I`ve ever read, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* . Both novice and some skilled woodworker can gain a lot of general info using this reading material. I`ve been very amazed how frequently I use this to look up woods at places like to restore and salvage spots.?
