Absolutely loved this review. Please do more reviews of older cars! As an owner of one of these I would like to mention the following though: 1) it was available as a manual in north america 2) it only came with steel brakes! no ceramic brakes option! 3) in 2008 the iDrive was updated to a much newer version which the F10 M5 also used until it got facelifted 4) DSC had three settings not two: ON, MDM and OFF 5) the Power button does not only change the throttle response but also changes the engine management which essentially unlocks the full 507HP since the car starts with 400HP. With respect to the gearbox: I am honestly quite torn on the SMG. No, it certainly isn’t perfect. However, when you are pushing the car hard the shifts are absolutely spectacular. There is no gearbox that shifts so brutal at the limit. In the most aggressive setting (S6 ,DSC OFF) the shifts are so brutal that you just think to yourself that the gearbox and the differentals burst into seven million pieces. @@supremeg9359 You are absolutely right, the smg is a dream. Test drove a 2007 M5 yesterday and I can say this to all the keyboard warriors out there, and to the author of this video (who incidentally has proven in previous videos that he knows nothing about the finesses of the settings of this amazing gearbox) that the computerized electronic control has an intelligent algorithm which learns your driving preferences and style. So after only 10 minutes of driving this beast in Grandad and F1 style (M button pressed), I could drive around the town center (Grandad mode) and it felt like I was in a Rolls Royce, I couldn`t even feel the gear changes; then when I pressed the M-Button (M for Magic, and changing via paddles) the suspension and steering tightened up and plunged me into F1 modus where the changes under full throttle and nearly red-lining the awesome V10, were ferocious and instantaneous. The precision of the steering wheel in M mode was second to none! The only thing I have ever driven which is in a similar league to this astonishing vehicle was the Ferrari 458 - the M5 was more fun. Take note keyboard heros!
Not suprising from Matt, he calls it an auto, even tho it has helical gears on lay shfts and a friction clutch, an auto would be planetry gears and a torque converter, he really needs to learn more about cars if he wants to give valid opinions IMO.
Yea but they are so rare that finding one in good condition is imposible + people who drive manual transmission never baby their cars and enjoy it 100%like there is no tomorrow.
Lion Strong il tell u why...because i assumed it was gna be an improvement over its predecessor, the e39 540i which was a f***ng legend and drove so well. How was i supposed to know the 5 series would go backwards over time, it was the last thing i suspected, and let me tell u something, there isnt much out there abt the 550i for me to research...a few videos and thats all. So anyways i traded in my piece of shit 550 in 2014 for a 135i and was soooo pleased with it, felt like what a bmw should feel like, and was so sad to trade it in in 2016 for a f80 m3...but i wanted the f80 more and couldnt afford to keep both :(
550i with sport pack had such a stiff and jarry ride yet did not handle well, far from flat cornering, and was front heavy and tended to understeer, bad ownership experience alltogether. Oh and engine burned oil, had to top up 1 liter of oil once or twice between services. Bullshit
I must be one of the few people who enjoys the violence of the shifts in SMG cars. In my encounters, they've added to the overall experience and made it seem more spectacular despite not being necessary. I even enjoy the dampening removal of shifts in sport mode on the automatics.
It's crazy and unbelievable that the e60 M5 was designed in 2004? I literally can't believe that. It looks so up to date and I bet it is still future-proof. It's a beauty from all corners.
They'll never be another. I'm so glad I've held onto mine for over 6 years. The gearbox is not as bad as you're making it sound, switch to S6 mode and make sure you got a new clutch in it and it will be smooth as hell. It was made to simulate a manual and it does a pretty good job of it.
Senad Muso i dont know why they just wont make it anymore.they can obviously,i mean i hope bmw knows that they made the best sounding sedan in the world.
A decent wallet will do. If you maintain one, and know what to look for. You'll be fine. A 2010 Model, updated interior/exterior and iDrive Rod Bearings, need new ones. Throttle Bodies Leave the SMG, Get a 6 speed manual Maybe a water pump to be safe
The logic to follow with any expensive or exotic car is that you are still buying a 100k+ dollar vehicle not matter how much you end up getting it for. Go into the purchase decision with that mindset, and people would fare better and not come running to forums to complain about not having done one's homework.
And that is my dream car right there.. I think it looks so big and menacing. I wasn’t a fan of the looks when it first came out but now, and after seeing them on the road, I think they have such road presence. What a car!!

V10 engine in a luxury sedan. Ahh... not many made. This is an iconic car for BMW M. You’re a lucky guy living in the UK, you also have access to another incredible V10 sedan... the Audi RS6 C6. I’d love to see a review of that too. Quite frankly, living in the US I get jealous every time I see one, since I can’t have it. I know those are going for relatively good prices as well. Cars like this are extinct and that’s a sad thing. As fast and awesome as the new RS7s and M5s are, they are not the same anymore. Everything has become about acceleration times, horsepower, and who’s got the biggest numbers on a piece of paper. These cars were raw, brutal, honest, and had that special ingredient that the new ones just don’t have.
Millen Rogers yeah that’s how it usually goes Us an Canada are left out from all of the good stuff, don’t know what Bmw were thinking this time leaving out the locals :D
I have a 56 plate m5 e60 it is truly awesome and when your letting the power out the gearbox is great ( but not so good at other times ) .It was good to see the driver enjoying it so much
It was also produced with a manual gearbox for the US Market. The Power Button is not for throttle response, without the button activated the car has only 400hp
I just bought a CPO 2007 M5 from a dealership. Only one owner, 112,000 miles, all maintenance performed at the dealership. Physically flawless with no damage or anything on the car reports. Included a $1,000 passport system. I had high expectations after having an e30 325e and e46 325i. I loved my past BMWs, but still better than I could have ever expected. Now that being said the E60 M5 was not that great it has a few issues some big and some not the only thing that it has is a good sounding engine that gets 5-6 mpg. The newer F10 M5 is far superior in every way except the sound but that’s do to the reverse flow of the intake and exhaust and the twin turbos but that’s a very small price for the better performance and a faster car. AND NO BANGLE BUTT !!!!
That's quite interesting Matt, please review more popular "older" cars in the future. You're making the very best reviews btw. Greetings from Germany :)
One of the greatest engines ever for sure! I know the gearbox is a bit crap but, correct me if I'm wrong, I think it shifts a little more gently when you lift the throttle between shifts, like you would in a regular manual car.
Yeah. You get to learn how to drive the car. I’ve had my E60 M5 now for 6 years (only use it for longer journeys)… once it’s warmed up it’s a joy to drive. Probably because I’m used to how it works but I don’t notice anything off with the gear shifting. Always drive it in tiptronic mode (never full auto)
Not really. Almost all E series BMWs with petrol engines are naturally aspirated. Exceptions are for example the N20 used in the X1 e84 and z4 e89. AFAIK, forced induction on petrol engine BMWs started with the very, very late E series. Diesel engines are another story and I couldn't care less about them.
This infotainment screen was integrated into the dashboard and had shade for better viewing. The current E90 unfortunately has that tablet one that I don’t like.

You look like Bill Gates while driving the car lol
Bill gates' new BMW
We have manual transmission E60 M5 here in USA.
Jon Emi that's the one to choose
I think us market was the only one to get the manual. Such a shame.
Yea but they are so rare that finding one in good condition is imposible + people who drive manual transmission never baby their cars and enjoy it 100%like there is no tomorrow.
Jon Eminov Thats not true. Manual e60 m5s are pretty common in the us
What about Canada?
The E60 M5 lowkey looks better the older it gets

Add intake, and tune, remove secondary cat and, muffler. Perform SMG Euro Flash (if in the USA), and make almost 500 whp. That is a win!!!
Owning an 07' 550i makes you crave this M5
I had an '08 550, what a boring heavy unbalanced piece of shit
I actually really love my 550i, m-sport pack on mine and it's wonderful
Lion Strong il tell u why...because i assumed it was gna be an improvement over its predecessor, the e39 540i which was a f***ng legend and drove so well. How was i supposed to know the 5 series would go backwards over time, it was the last thing i suspected, and let me tell u something, there isnt much out there abt the 550i for me to research...a few videos and thats all. So anyways i traded in my piece of shit 550 in 2014 for a 135i and was soooo pleased with it, felt like what a bmw should feel like, and was so sad to trade it in in 2016 for a f80 m3...but i wanted the f80 more and couldnt afford to keep both :(
Believe it or not my 135i was more fun to drive than the f80 m3, but overall the f80 is more exciting, the torque and power and agility is unreal
550i with sport pack had such a stiff and jarry ride yet did not handle well, far from flat cornering, and was front heavy and tended to understeer, bad ownership experience alltogether. Oh and engine burned oil, had to top up 1 liter of oil once or twice between services. Bullshit
Nice quirks Doug. Sorry Mat.
hahahah not even close to Doug
In the US manual was available as an option. It's rare though.
yh true really weird tho i would expect it to be the other way round haha.
True
Wow. What a total blast that would be :)
The sound of that v10 is amazing
I still have my '06 M5 and its as spine tingling as the day I bought it new.
Must be the most dorky laugh ever recorded
that exhaust sound is amazing
Imagine straight pipe
They'll never be another. I'm so glad I've held onto mine for over 6 years. The gearbox is not as bad as you're making it sound, switch to S6 mode and make sure you got a new clutch in it and it will be smooth as hell. It was made to simulate a manual and it does a pretty good job of it.
Please test more old cars like this 😎
Magnus A And more greasy slimy penises
Best bmw M engine ever made!
Senad Muso i dont know why they just wont make it anymore.they can obviously,i mean i hope bmw knows that they made the best sounding sedan in the world.
The best one apart from maintenance lol
Probably SM. Although I really do love the S65 and S54
Senad Muso actually, one of the worst ones.
You need a big wallet to maintain one of these.
I've had the chance to drive one at age 18, and my god that thing left an impression on me!
A decent wallet will do. If you maintain one, and know what to look for. You'll be fine.
A 2010 Model, updated interior/exterior and iDrive
Rod Bearings, need new ones.
Throttle Bodies
Leave the SMG, Get a 6 speed manual
Maybe a water pump to be safe
The logic to follow with any expensive or exotic car is that you are still buying a 100k+ dollar vehicle not matter how much you end up getting it for. Go into the purchase decision with that mindset, and people would fare better and not come running to forums to complain about not having done one's homework.
I owned a 2010. only thing I ever had to replace was tires. 47,000 miles on it when I got rid of it

That amazing laugh you get when you get in a car that's way faster than you thought it ever could be.
that laugh of his felt forced
@@edombre4637
Can you feel laughs then ?
That's impressive.
And that is my dream car right there.. I think it looks so big and menacing. I wasn’t a fan of the looks when it first came out but now, and after seeing them on the road, I think they have such road presence. What a car!!
This BMW will never age! Looks way modern than new cars right now!
121bham that’s truuue hahah
Really man,are you a grandpa
@121bham Dude you need to get laid.
I agree this car looks modern and it's ahead of its time
No, the E60 M5 could not be optioned with ceramic brakes.
Best m5 ever hydraulic steering rack best handling m5 ever BMW needs to bring this back into production, run like a special edition car of like 500 units with the same engine but revised to more power and torque and a 7spd DCT gearbox. No matter what the price I guarantee they sell out
rudy gay
Start a petition and send it to bmw
Best looking headlight design of all time, inspired by a falcon or eagle probably.
The emotions on his face while driving this car, yeah, that's how a true car should always make you feel.
Matt, that car have 60k km not miles, its new for those km... why you say its old ? Its a classic 😎
Best sounding M5 ever. No fake noise bullshit in this!
I loved the jolt of the gearbox
One of my two favorite BMW cars of all times this E60 and the other one is the E46 M3 CSL
By any means I’m not a Bmw enthusiast but e60 is gold specially with a manual, shame we didn’t get them in Europe
Aidas Martinkus I am sure you would get e60 m5 In Europe.
YEs but with automatic. Yes, you can import used ones from the US with manual gearbox. But originally, Europe only got automatic.
Yeah what Patric said
Oh ok. I would think that Germany will get the Manuel cause that is where the car is from
Millen Rogers yeah that’s how it usually goes Us an Canada are left out from all of the good stuff, don’t know what Bmw were thinking this time leaving out the locals :D
It actually did come with a 6-Speed Manual in the US and Canada. In fact, there is one for sale in Toronto with the manual right now
sva60_ cyyz yeah it is true that we've got a couple in and around Toronto but it's way more expensive than then the auto one
I love all M5s but the V10 sound gets me the most excited.
I have a 56 plate m5 e60 it is truly awesome and when your letting the power out the gearbox is great ( but not so good at other times ) .It was good to see the driver enjoying it so much
I love the fact that I grew up with this car and it's still my favourite car even though I have been in an Aventador and a 918
Best looking 5series ever
I do not own one but just looking at the road this is the best
The estate version looks better
E39 m5 i prefer that more with its looks and its more reliable v8
After the new one ☝🏼
@@tidierpenny you must be high
It was also produced with a manual gearbox for the US Market. The Power Button is not for throttle response, without the button activated the car has only 400hp
Enfant Terrible Yep

Magnificent V10
i'm not a bmw fan but this engine is pure art ! that sound is unique! thx for sharing
Jesus, what was that laugh at 2:00
It was cringy AF.
山内淳カイル haha yeah right.
I know
It is called sincere joy and laugh. You should try it some time.
Owned one for a year. I loved it to bits. Get one if you can.
If u sell it after 1 year , you dident loved so much then
The most beautiful M5 & one of the prettiest bmw
I forgot how beautiful that v10 sounds. Used to drive this car so many times in Gran Turismo 4
I feel like a king in comfort on the road.
Best $14,799 ever.
Yes Mat! Please get a E60 M5 and do another Car-series with it 😍
Best M5 ever in my opinion
the new one with this four-wheel drive is pretty insane too, isn't it?
Yeah the new M5 is my dream car😍
Sorry CL. Best engine. Fugly carcass.
Now that's a proper M car with bespoke racing car like engine. It has a true M car character. F10 M5 and G30 is just a 560i M performance, that's about it.
ankbrq lets be honest the new m5 is just on a hole other level if you compare it to the f10.
Great car but no V10 unfortunately. It's essentially a tuned F10 M5 with AWD/RWD change on-the-fly.
You can see the joy on his face, while driveing. Awsome car!
fell in love with a 2009 bmw e60 535i, that low end torque from both turbos, stiff steering, and ride quality had me convinced i had the best sedan ever for 3k usd, until i found out about the e60 m5
I've seen a video of a stock E60 M5 reached a top speed of 340KPH (211mph+)!!!
No doubt this thing is just a straight line BULLET :)
rip holden
Greatest BMW M5 ever. There will never be another car like this ever unfortunately.
How come bro
@@Manos-de-Piedra Because BMW are unlikely to make another V10 due to the climate change lobbyists that governments unfortunately listen to that apply pressure and tax cut incentives not to make high emission engines.
It's all about clean & green hence the electric vehicles, although they certainly aren't 100% clean!
owner of a e60 530d,such a nice car,e60 m5 is a legend,modern cars nowadays has no personality...
Thanos Pegio I too have a 530d. Lots of Torque and even more the mighty M5 but that V10 and 8k plus rpms is incredible!!!!
if you think your e60 has personality you are in mistake, don't get me wrong i had e60 535d aswell very nice car! But the thing is all cars after 1990 dont have personality everything is for fucking money
travelling with 160-170 kph and feels like 100!amazing family car and for young people like me too!rear wheel drive is what makes bmw fun ;) also consumption in low speed for a 6 cylinder car is also veeery good!
yes but the diesel version with some modifications like(hybrid turbos, straight pipe, chip=around 500hp+a lot NM) is much faster than a m5+ 10x lower consumation, so the m5 is for kids i think especially this one since the diesel version could be faster i don't understand why you should buy m5
you r totally right,i dont think an auto transmission can afford much more NM so i guess you neeed a new transmission too;)
BMW M5 E60
Performance Stats:
Engine Displacement - 5.0 L N/A V10
Power - 500 HP
Torque - 383 LB-FT
0-60 mph - 4.4 Seconds
Top Speed - 205 mph
507hp
Technically you can do 168 with the speed limiter, when it is off max speed is 204
After owning a 2009 E60 M5, I drive it for 6 yrs traded it in for a 2015 F10 M5 and still driving it .
AND NO BANGLE BUTT !!!!
f10 was a great car, traded mine in for the new f90 competition pack which is also an awesome machine.
The Bangle butt is so sexy Lool, best looking car thanks to Chris
That reaction though 2:00
That's quite interesting Matt, please review more popular "older" cars in the future. You're making the very best reviews btw. Greetings from Germany :)
2:00 Best part of the whole video
Jalu Andura So all you care is his laugh not the car?
I like his laugh more than the car.
The taillights have that sort of swoosh in it which makes them so fking beautiful to look at the rear of the M5 E60
I wasn't expecting a review of this car on the channel, The E60 is my dream car! 👌
My absolute favorite of the M5’s !!! ;)
Naturally aspirated BMW? Now that's rare...
Turbocharged bimmers are recent though..
Hakuna Matata Turbocharged petrol BMWs, yes. Diesel BMWs are turbocharged since the mid 90s.
This infotainment screen was integrated into the dashboard and had shade for better viewing. The current E90 unfortunately has that tablet one that I don’t like.
I Love how he is joking around with the interior and all the buttons, but when he starts to talk about the performance of the car, gets all serious about it :D, favorite engine sound of all bmw !
1:57 hahaha even the camera picked up the shift's movements 😂 no wonder he lost it
that V10 sound ❤
one of the best engine every made, love a v10 e60, lfa v10 & Porsche carerra gt v10.
best cars ever
ang marko and LFA!
Lfa V10 oh yeah!
ang marko unfortunately the sound of the LFA was engineered by Yamaha.
i know
Unfortunately? Seeing as Yamaha are pretty awesome, and have been making musical instruments for over 130 years, i'd be happy they had a lot to do with the LFA sound and toyota in general.
They had a HUD in 2005? What wow bmw way ahead of its time
This car is more than 10 years old and I still want it. Forever keeps
