2006 BMW M5 Review - Bavaria's V10 Masterpiece

  • Over a decade ago BMW replaced their own legendary super saloon, the E39 M5. Packing a 400bhp 5L V8 and classic styling, how could BMW improve upon that?
A 500bhp 5L V10 was a good start, but paired to a seven speed SMG, fifteen years later is this four door masterpiece still brilliant, or just old hat?

Cheers Jay, was good to meet you. Having seen how you treated other people's cars with respect you were on a very short list of people I felt comfortable entrusting my car with.
If anyone is thinking about letting Jay review their car then I can definitely vouch for him. Top bloke.

I can sympathise with the trials and tribulations you went through with the repair, must be nice now after all that to see your car entertaining us with the story, the sounds etc. Thanks for lending it to Jay.
Something Jay did not mention is that this M5 version is the only Bangle 5 series that looked good as the wheels were in proportion to that very slab sided bodywork. It will only get better with time on the M5, not the others.
Talking of time, that engine / exhaust note, imagine when most cars are electric in the next few years :D If you keep it to 2025 and rev your engine you will be both on PH and the Daily Mail at once.
They will nickname you Jack the V10 gallon hat.....

@@zakelwe Definitely some trials and tribulations, but it's thankfully all gone now.
It had been in the works for ages, but was reliant of getting my car back. Once I had it back it was just a case of running it in, making sure any issues were ironed out and then arranging a date. All went smoothly apart from the weather.
The Bangle M5 has aged well. Some don't agree, but one thing is for sure, it isn't dull.
Hahaha, I doubt I will keep it that long, but when EV's take over and we lose cars like this (in many years hopefully) then life will be a little duller.

@@Dean_cee I've had the car 5 years now and yes, there have been a few issues.
Fuel pump failed sometime after this video.
I had a pair of split track control arm bushes (design fault of the poly bushes I was using).
PLCD sensor failed in hot weather (clutch position sensor).
Ionic module failed dropping it onto 9 cylinders.
And I think that is pretty much it. I supercharged it in June this year.

Bought the M6 in 2006, never had any issues. Lots of engine problems come from people who don’t know how to drive these cars. Personally i never go above 3000-3500 rpm for the first 10kms. And yes the rod bearing shells need replacing every 120.000kms but so did the ones in the E46 M3 or the E92 M3...all very high reving engines suffer from this. And Vanos pumps go wrong in all bmw engines. Hell Porsche 991.1 GT3 even had to replace whole engines when they came out... so if you treat this engine with respect and give it the correct service on time there is nothing wrong with them. Thing is many of these cars came in hands of young punks who drove them hard from cold start and didnt service them right.
For the gearbox, ofcourse it’s not as fast as the DCT’s nowadays but back then it was the best single clutch robotic gearbox there was. Only at low speeds its dreadfull but at high speeds or track these gearbox are nice and hefty.

    • @cutdepiefails6596

No they don't, high revving cars don't chew bearings like M cars, plus they aren't that high revving. Never ever I heard of a Ferrari, a Porsche or even Mercs have bearingwear so consistent as with M cars.
As for Porsche, did BMW ever did a recall on an entire engine for their fuck ups? Porsche fuckd up a cam shaft, BMW fckd up way worse in every single performance engine they ever done after the 2000s.
How you pointing a finger at Porsche for doing the right thing for their costumers?

    This is my 6MT v10 m5 th-cam.com/video/4WtWlXVMnuc/w-d-xo.html
As a 9 year owner of a Dinan S2 e60 m5, with a 6 speed, and 163,000 miles (and about 300,000+ miles of m5 ownership across the different m5 generations), I can tell you my e28 m5 and e60 m5 are never leaving my stable.
As for the steering, monoballs will fix any slop. And a 3.91 or 4.10 will fix the gearing on a six speed. Rod bearings are simply a wear item - replaced mine at 80,000 and 150,000 miles as wear items. Throttle actuators are original at 163,000 miles. BMW gave us a bespoke “F1” inspired engine, you just had to supply your own F1 budget to keep these cars in top shape. Too many of these cars were purchased from under funded owners on beer budgets, that prioritized aesthetic “mods” instead of maintenance.

If you factor the cost of getting the rod bearings done if it's higher mileage when you buy it the SMG issue is far cheaper to fix these days, it's specifically the pump motor that fails which costs around £800 to have replaced, far cheaper than the pump itself which is about £3k.

@J B wow it's odd to hear someone making sensible comments about these cars. They are only expensive to maintain if you are a fool. So true on the "D" mode too, it just shouldn't be there. I think that's the cause of a lot of SMG hate. Just pull those paddles and play V10 tunes like the German engineers intended.

@J B I have a 2010 E60 with 12K mile on it, yea a garage queen but did do a track day out at Fontana, ca. I agree the D is worthless, just use the padels but keep the stereo down so you can hear the engine. It shifts brillantley when trying to go fast. Mine blips the throttle on down shifts too.

Grate car, I drove one around 7 years ago. The pulling power of this car, above 120km/h , it was incredible, was compared to waking up another engine in it. The gearbox a bit clumsy in town traffic, but outside on fast roads, no problem. Nice and really fast cruiser, keeping you alert on te road, not relaxed as an S 500.

I always liked the e39 M5, however, THIS is the M5 I REALLY want. That engine is a masterpiece, in my opinion it's the greatest engine BMW ever built. The e92 M3 is another car I'm desperately chasing, they still need to drop a bit more in price though or I need to earn a bit more.
A high revving NA engine is the best sound in the world for me.
Favourite engine of all time? I really don't think I could choose just one, this V10 and the e92 V8 are right up there alongside the 5.7L V10 in the Porsche Carrera GT.
I hope I never have to choose...

Nice review. Was wondering when you would get round to doing an M5, though still hoping you will do the E39. Favourite engine ever? Like many, there are only so many cars you can own and although I haven’t owned one (yet), a Mezger engined 911 must be up there as one of the best sounding engines and I love the sound of most Boxer engines, be they Porsche or Subaru. Of my current cars, the VR6 in my R32 is pretty sweet sounding and is the reason I chose a big engined hatch over a faster, smaller turbo version; but I really like the S62 in my M5. Sound is somewhat strangled by the asthmatic stock headers, but the torque and power delivery is mighty impressive. Not saying these are best engines ever, and that V10 seems to be something else, but based on what I have actually owned, they ain’t bad.

One thing that I think contributed to this car getting the "Bad" reputation is a lot of previous owners were not expecting the maintenance bills to be quite so big... hence the servicing got delayed /missed and eventually the problems got sold with the car to the next unsuspecting owner and so on.. I was lucky with mine as both previous owners maintained the car regardless of cost.. most if not all the problematic items have been replaced with the dreaded rod bearings being the most recent.. about 800miles before I bought the car (approx. 2700 miles ago). As I don't use the car as a daily i'm hoping it'll last a good time before anything major goes bang. As for the Gearbox... it can be a bit lungey when cold and defo doesn't change gear as fast as a modern DCT... but then again, she is 14 years old.

The only problem I have with these V10s is reliability and the fuel economy, but I’ve researched how to keep these engines as prime as possible and I feel confident that I can make the engine last. The 2008 model has an updated SMG III gearbox so I feel confident about its reliability as well. As first car I would probably never need another for a long time, as long as it’s alive! I find that most people that do not like the SMG just do not understand the mechanical side of it. Ayrton Senna hated flappy Paddle gearboxes with a passion. However if he had to drive one he would much prefer a mechanical gearbox and clutch that you can work with, and not today's DSG S, which are very good but have no driver input at all, just like a full blown automatic

@@JacesOwnWorld well compared to a Mark 7 golf it does suck. Look, I'm not saying it's the best gearbox in the world, it's just a very mechanical feel , driver input feedback on the car and you have to work with the car and some of us oldies like that , including the great Ayrton Senna. Driver skills are needed less and less these days, first ABS, then Traction Control, the list of electronic toys that help a drive now has taken away some driver skills.

@@jackthehat8593 it's got an electronic active differential control system and it works quite well actually. Really gets the power down well. Never heard of a chain issue either with the XF-R. I take mine to my local Jaguar specialist and he says the 5.0 and 4.2 litre Jaguar V8s are pretty much bomb proof. He's never seen any major issues with chains or anything else major at all that goes wrong with them. Mine has just ticked over 40k and it's still perfect. He regularly works on 5.0 and 4.2 engines well into 100k miles and they are all still fine. I wouldn't worry about engine troubles at all mate if your looking at the Jaguar V8s. They are brilliant.
