Just did rod bearings on an 08 m5 with 140k miles and let me tell you the previous owner was persistent on letting the car warm up before beating on it and that makes all the difference. They had a ton of life left on them. Key to this cars longevity is letting it warm up before play time. It’s 10w60 which is syrup when cold.
Great comment. I have a manual 07 with 85k miles. It seems the warm up period is the difference. Mine apparently had a rebuild at 37k miles due to the bearings. New oil every 3k miles and proper warm up should make the difference.
The problem with BMW M cars with high revving normally aspirated engines is that they were bought on finance and ragged to death from cold then given back. Finding one that's been looked after is rare because so few of them were bought to be owned long term. They all seem to have 50-150k miles now. Find an exotic car like an period Ferarri and most of them are barely broken in.
Totally agree, I do the same, 10 miles warm up and then gradually crank it up, same with the cool down, last 5 miles let it glide and take it easy. My SMG pump failed, probably the electric part, can't wait to get it back in the road.
Also doesn't help that BMW decided to link the warm up lights to the coolant temp, which is boiling in about 2 minutes, whereas the 10w60 oil takes about an hour 🤣

I find it hard to believe that E60 drivers are the only people who don't maintain their vehicles. There is a reason this car's resale value is so ridiculously low on average.
@@ataorkunoguz5451 The car had many problems. Nothing Vanos related. But it had major issues with the engine and emissions system. I finally got rid of it.

Then you get inside and see that ancient looking gauge cluster..... Those orange displays should have been left in the 1990's and never thought about again.
I think the OP was more referring to the fact that the owner has kept it literally looking brand new. Not a stone chip in sight, not a mark on the alloys, not a stitch damaged on the interior
I owned one for five years. The clutch had to be replaced after two years (on an SMG car!). The iDrive died completely twice. I was stranded a couple of times by faulty ABS sensors. The rod bearings were replaced as part of the recall. Driving around town in London, I got 8 mpg. Despite all of that, I loved the car. The engine is amazing and sounds wonderful. I have had far fewer issues with a manual Aston DB9 or my current V12 Vantage.
Those light are alweys on when the car is on, those are just so you can see where the lights are in the dark, they actually only iluminate the spot on the roof itself, it doesn't provide light inside or on the floor of the car...
@Tiberiu Gherasim warm them up properly. With any high reving NA engine proper warm up before hard reving is critical to thin the oil for proper flow.If done properly, u wont have bearing issues. On my second E92 M3. Never had bearing issues
@@johncreedon1833 Warming the engine before revving is critical on ANY engine. From a lawn mower for a quad turbo Bugatti. There was no need to call it at "high revving" or "NA." Also, you never had bearing issues because YOU DON'T HAVE A V10 M5. It's obviously a common issue.
The E60 is a combination of German engineering and Italian design. It was designed by Davide Arcangeli who sadly passed away before the car went into production. My favorite BMW, which is why I have two.

@@HTSWAGGER That's true but even a weekend warrior needs to pay off. I loved and hated my BMW. It was beautiful and the ergonomics were so thoughtful, almost perfect. The performance was precise and surprisingly quick. Still, none of that matters if you can't depend on it starting when you want to enjoy it. I'm convinced that only hardcore DIYers or full time mechanics with an empty garage waiting should go anywhere near these brittle bricks. BMWs act like supercars but are priced for the general market. BMW service and warranty for the first 4 years is second to none. Lease > love > dump.
I was so damn close to buying one some years back. So glad I didn't. You reach a point in your life where you've actually matured enough to know that wanting something while affording it, isn't always enough to buy it. There are simpler ways to get problems than to buy them.
As an ex owner of a 2006 M6 (essentially the same car in coupe version) I have to agree fully with Doug’s review of the M5. Loved driving it...when it actually worked. I had the proverbial love hate relationship with it. I’ve moved on to a 911 which stirs my soul even more.
Doug never stops talking, brifing, giving information etc.. even for a millisecond. He deserves every cent he earns. Dont get me wrong, i dont know him personally, never met him but we all have to admit that he is truly a professional you tuber and he really is doing his job. Congratulations Mr. Demuro.
I had a 2010 Alpine White M5 with only 42K, and shortly after, had to do Vanos. Sold it and bought a 2009-equipped Manual transmission and blew the engine. I ended up supercharging the engine, and soon later, both throttle actuators went out. Thank God some fanboy from NY paid me all the money since it was Manual and Supercharged. Shortly after purchasing it Vanos pump went out on him. 😂😂😂😂 having this car is like being in a toxic relationship, two years have gone by and thinking about buying myself a third one.
But not as a manual. The 550 or even better, the 535d may take the crown. Most of the chassis dynamics of the M5 with the reliability of the long-standing 3L diesel.
Honestly it just depends on how it was cared for you can tell right away based on how the seller or owner warms it up. I passed on three different m5 because the sellers didn't warm the v10 up properly once I ran into a seller that was more worried about warming it up and pre trip care prior to test drive I knew I was at the right place. 10w 60 Liqui Moly Race GTI highly recommend 👌
Tip: if you are buying one of these, NEVER buy one with a clean service record. This means that nothing has ever needed to be fixed on the car, and eventually the car will break. If you buy an M5 with a long service record being fixed over thousands of dollars, buy it. It's all stuff that has been done FOR you
are you sure i have a 2006 m5 and it has 172k miles and i havent had to replace anything other then a head gasket and regular up keep but my honda pilot has been in the shop for longer then i had it
@@andrewwhite5422 Really? What went wrong with the Pilot? I'm a Honda mechanic and I've found they rarely need anything more than standard maintenance.
@Ray Peeste What the heck? You don't care his engine blew up? He loses the car and he's having to spend too much money just to repair his car. Stupid dude who doesn't care that something bad happened to someone.
I own this car. It’s been fantastic and I’ve never gotten more smiles per gallon. As with anything, stay up on maintenance and it’ll treat you fine. As far as rod bearings, get some BE bearings so that there is a larger gap for oil. Problem solved. I’m at 105k miles, had bearings and throttle actuators done at 80k. Now it’s just oil, filters, tires and lots of premium for a while.
And the reliability issues with the E60 are the reason I bought a W211 AMG... I had a chance to drive one of those E60s with the SMG gearbox back in 2011 and I was downright impressed with the road manners and how light the car was on its feet. It's an impressive package if you've got $$$ to throw at it.... judging by the number of E60 M5s I see on the road these days, they've mostly gone to the cutter's yard. I see more E39 M5s being used than E60s in a place like LA County, and that's a pretty telling observation... My independent mechanic who does Merc and BMW had an E60 M5 stuck on his lift for 6 months because the owner couldn't come up with cash for a new engine for a while... These are not cars you see advertised with high mileage. Whereas, go over to the manufacturer from Stuttgart, and you've got AMGs with 200-300k miles being sold all day long on Craigslist. Tells you all you need to know about the reliability... but the E60 is a far superior dynamic package to the W211, especially if you enjoy canyon carving...
Don't let this distraction you from the fact that Hector is going to be running 3 Honda civics with spoon engines. He just came into Harry's and ordered 3 T66 turbo with nos and a motec exhaust.
Change your oil to a good synthetic 0w/40, instead of the 10w/60 that BMW originally recommended. It works better with the overly-tight tolerances of the F1-derived engine. It will preserve your rod bearings and VANOS pumps.
Just picked up one of the beauties (w/SMG) and absolutely love it! And I am a BMW fanatic who currently owns a E39 540i Sport, E53 X5 4.8is, and F30 328i. EVERY car has its issues and I have a list of them for the aforementioned cars. It's funny though, I am not sure how someone would equate a 507hp, 383ft lbs, 8250RPM redline, and 205mph top speed car with being reliable? If you want a sporty reliable car, get a Honda Accord GT. If you want an amazing one-of-a-kind vehicle, you have to be realistic about what you are getting into and be ready to maintain it.
I loved my 2008 m5 and had it for 9 years. Used as a daily driver too. It was expensive to maintain but I loved it anyway. Sold it in 2019 with 44k miles. Still miss it though
@@Anthony-qh1xv it was but even the slightest issue is expensive. Even normal maintenance, which I highly recommend, is expensive even though I did not use a dealer. Loads of fun though even as a daily driver.
@@tomshourd2601 Right, I have a BMW as well, and you have to be really* anal with maintaining them. I do oil every 5k. They are not the most forgiving cars, but when you drive them on a twisty road, they are a BLAST! Super tight cars. Great to know! thanks!
@ america has way better gas than britian, take a look at shells premium fuel here. Also fuel has nothing to do with rod bearings breaking every 90k miles or any problem these cars have
My father has owned this car since new in 2006 and still owns it. 2007 was the first year for the manual (USA only) so it is an SMG car. And what a mistake that was. It has only cost about $2500 for what is supposed to be an improved Hydraulic Pump that is less prone to failure, but I still worry about it’s longevity. And one quite expensive ($3500) clutch job already done at about 60,000 miles which is common. The SMG is the reason I will not buy the car from him. Partly because of the reliability and future cost worries, but mostly because it makes the car less fun and less of an experience to drive (just like all cars without a third pedal). I have learned from this experience that I will never get any sporty car with a dct, smg, auto, or the like, partly for the expense and complexity, but years down the line the car will age and so will these transmissions. Next, the rod bearing failure. This WILL happen on every car. BMW used to be known for fantastic and infinitely reliable engines, but now for some reason they cannot figure out oil passage clearances. Generally, you want to preemptively take care of this between 80-100k miles for a cost of $2500 if that is all you do. This car is amazing, and I would personally buy one with a manual even with the rod bearing issues. The car understeers too much for regular track days but is a perfect mountain run car. With a serious set of coilovers you can keep up with many porsches and corvettes on track. And you would be surprised just how fast this car is at speed. It keeps up with many lighter higher horsepower cars at speed (from track experience). Find one with an exhaust already on as they are quite expensive and mandatory on an S85 as they are insanely quiet from the factory.
Seems like you convinced yourself for a future money pit. The same expenses you'll have repairing the car is the same as upgrading my car to reach 900hp lol.
My dad had the same car! Wanted manual but the first year only had SMG! He upgrades at every life cycle and I gotta say I'm loving the new M5 comp pack, it's special. But not as special as that 2006.
If you're driving at the limit on a twisty track/road then I like a fast sports auto box with paddles. Also I think BMW did pretty well with some of their autos, they change gear fast and the older cars had paddles that worked the same on both sides - towards to go up, away to go down, perfect! Driving one of these at the limit is exciting 😀
Your DC electric motor probably went bad on your SMG (common problem on the early units). If your maintain your hydraulic fluid in it, the pump itself shouldn't have any issues. The SMG is paired well together with the v10 if your in S6 and WOT.
I was a salesperson for BMW when this car was new. It was a long time ago, but I remember on top of the $105k price, there was a $5500 gas guzzler tax, a $5000 dealer markup, and no test drives. Seriously, you had to overpay, and buy it on reputation alone... no test drives for a car that cost as much as modest condominium in that era. I still love that car though... so much that occasionally I consider buying one now that they're dirt cheap
Damn I remember a few months ago I rented a brand new 2023 M5 off Enterprise. Damn that engine was the sexiest thing I’ve heard and now, I get when everyone who owned or was around one stated the car is like a drug. It’s so enticing yet SO expensive to own! Now I see one down the street at my local dealer 2010 M5 pristine with only 120,000km on the ODO no accidents all maintenance done for only $10,800. They got a 2014 Corolla for $12,500 and the dealers been pushing the cheaper BMW on me for days now. I REALLY want one but know the hassle and headache that comes with it. Sexy but problematic at best!
The rod bearing issue is what happens when you give a car with a racing engine to plebs to drive . In order to have a motor like this rev as high as it does , you have to run tight bearing tolerances . They also run a fairly heavy weight oil so that when up to temp the oil can protect the engine correctly. So if the car isn't warmed up very gently, watching the oil temperature and not gunning it AT ALL until up to full temp , you will damage the bearings If the oil is not thin enough to flow through the bearing , ut cannot protect the bearing. Most normal car drivers just wouldn't understand this at all .
I've got an S54 which has the exact same issue. It takes an eternity to get the oil up to temp. After blowing £1200 on new bearings though, I'll be taking that eternity to warm it up EVERY damn time
@Matthew Nicholas I work on old aircooled Volkswagens and build larger aircooled performance engines for them , 2.3 litre 200 hp sort of motors as well as 2 litre ish ones for campers . They all have bigger sump extensions , full flow oiling and external oil coolers and henceforth hold about 7 to 8 litres of oil in total . I have Autometer gauges in them and the oil takes a fairly long time to get up to temperature. I make it a rule of thumb to not give them any more than gentle driving till past 150 deg Fahrenheit and no full throttle till at 180
So I have a question I know how the problems with the rod bearings are very complicated somebody explain to me so if the clearance is very tight then why they couldn't use a thinner engine oil to prevent that problem but then when gets warm then is too thin to protect at high rpm NOW have any bmw brain out there have tried the Shell Rotella oil like the T4 15w40 or even the full synthetic T6 5w40 ? Because that is a great oil who knows we might had the solution for those problems on front of our nose and we were busy looking for something else
I own an E61 M5 Touring in Interlagos Blue and I love it! I daily it and I’ve never had any issues with it. It’s such a sleeper and it has a beautiful soundtrack with endless power.
William Wallace compared to newer M cars, it definitely is. Also, most people won’t know it’s an M5 if they don’t look at the quad exhausts. Also, I’ve seen many standard 5 and 3 series cars that have the wing mirrors, wheels and body kit if their M variant which makes it even more subtle.
Gustavo Archundia the best luxury sedans every are bmw 6 and 8 series gran coupe, Aston Martin rapide, and lagonda, any Bentley or rolls Royce sedan, and any Tesla sedan, not scotties wife 03 lexus😂
I used to own one of these back in 2008... amazing car. Respect. Yes I suffered some issues... but reason for me to change car was: I) how uncomfortable the car was; and, II) Range... not cost of fuel, range... if you wanted to go somehow quick, real range of the car was below 300 km, which means that every 200 km you had the low fuel warning again, making a 600 - 700 km trip a gas station tour. If you built a car that consumes so much gas, you should have a 100 liter tank (at least).
Honestly, I know he keeps trying to cover his tracks, I can't help but feel that he's just biased. He didn't mention the exhaust note, didn't even really explain the MPower mode well, nor the styling or performance bits like the front splitter and wider fenders. I think he went into this with his mind made up. He said it was all around better than the e39 but the final score doesn't really reflect that. He also didn't mention that the seats adjust while driving to keep you in your seat. The bolstering actually adjusts from side to side while taking high speed turns.
SamiDullard10 Doug is clearly NOT biased he straight up says how great of a car this is in the beginning but he just points out the obvious flaw of this car and that is reliability

You're so awesome Doug. How old is this and you still probably scan some comments from time to time. I had the v8 version of this, an '06 550i 6 speed manual that was reliable for awhile but then....that 4.8 is a decent motor, but it's still gonna eat you alive with the cost of the parts. The steering wheel exclamation point btw is the active steering and...mine went out and it was.like having a sunroof that won't close, which also happens alot in these cars. Nobody wants it and it was 6k to fix. Sold the car in 2020, a 550 six.speed man....for $3500....ouch! And it ran well!
They used the clutch from the 550i V8, which was not strong enough for the V10. If you drive it like it is meant to be driven, the clutch will not last very long...😅

Doug, I loved your cut while still talking about the issues with these cars. My buddy is a BMW mechanic and has always told me to stay away from V8 and higher cylinder BMW cars. The straight sixes appear to be fine...cheers!
BMW is definitely still king of the inline 6. I'm actually glad they've gone back to them in the lower model F chassis M cars. The e92 M3 will always be a bit of a bastard car.
Inline 6 is the best BMW`s for sure, i dont want any of these E-gen BMW`s cause i hate the look of them, but if i had one thrown after me id take a 330i over a M3 any day for exmaple. Really? I always hated the E60 design.

Seriously, you had to overpay, and buy it on reputation alone... no test drives for a car that cost as much as modest condominium in that era. I still love that car though... so much that occasionally I consider buying one now that they're dirt cheap
Why weren’t test drives allowed? Is that common with expensive cars?
Damn I remember a few months ago I rented a brand new 2023 M5 off Enterprise. Damn that engine was the sexiest thing I’ve heard and now, I get when everyone who owned or was around one stated the car is like a drug. It’s so enticing yet SO expensive to own! Now I see one down the street at my local dealer 2010 M5 pristine with only 120,000km on the ODO no accidents all maintenance done for only $10,800. The rod bearing issue is what happens when you give a car with a racing engine to plebs to drive .
In order to have a motor like this rev as high as it does , you have to run tight bearing tolerances .
They also run a fairly heavy weight oil so that when up to temp the oil can protect the engine correctly.
So if the car isn't warmed up very gently, watching the oil temperature and not gunning it AT ALL until up to full temp , you will damage the bearings
If the oil is not thin enough to flow through the bearing , ut cannot protect the bearing.
Most normal car drivers just wouldn't understand this at all .
I fully agree on warming up the engine. 10W-60 is sugar syrup when cold.
I've got an S54 which has the exact same issue. It takes an eternity to get the oil up to temp. After blowing £1200 on new bearings though, I'll be taking that eternity to warm it up EVERY damn time
@Matthew Nicholas
I work on old aircooled Volkswagens and build larger aircooled performance engines for them , 2.3 litre 200 hp sort of motors as well as 2 litre ish ones for campers .
They all have bigger sump extensions , full flow oiling and external oil coolers and henceforth hold about 7 to 8 litres of oil in total .
I have Autometer gauges in them and the oil takes a fairly long time to get up to temperature.
I make it a rule of thumb to not give them any more than gentle driving till past 150 deg Fahrenheit and no full throttle till at 180
Most people are shockingly stupid.
So I have a question I know how the problems with the rod bearings are very complicated somebody explain to me so if the clearance is very tight then why they couldn't use a thinner engine oil to prevent that problem but then when gets warm then is too thin to protect at high rpm
NOW have any bmw brain out there have tried the Shell Rotella oil like the T4 15w40 or even the full synthetic T6 5w40 ? Because that is a great oil who knows we might had the solution for those problems on front of our nose and we were busy looking for something else

This is Doug's Homage to Regular Car Reviews
@@WhoIsSea. yea, but we got a good look at a BMW road hazard & first aid kit...again.
@@robs2765 As I said, I think he was trying to pretend that he's not biased. Everyone's a little bias. Edit: Maybe I just feel that he didn't give it a proper review. Seemed like he rushed over a few things and left out some stuff as well. I felt as though he didn't really appreciate the car.

That Bmw has aged like a fine wine 🍷!
Until the engine blows. Then we say it's aging like milk. :-P
Nope it looks like a big box
Bah, not in Europe... idk why European cars are overrated in USA, probably becose you don't have the lower end production like Series 1, A1 etc that compete with Toyota, Vw , Peugeot and other cheaper brand
Francesco Vicenza No we only have the Elmore expensive models
Francesco Vicenza I think it's the same for how Mustangs and Corvettes seem overrated here in the states. They're so ubiquitous, and 75% of the time the mustang driving by is a v6
My wish has been answered 😮 Guys, listen to these with exhausts systems on TH-cam. The V10 sounds clearer, very meaty and throaty.
My most favorit youtuber 👌😁 you ST
And with eisenmann or meisterschaft exhaust it goes into super saiyan mode
Solomon Tetteh too bad its throaty ness is swallowing money XD
Thats the engine trying to escape through the exhaust!

The pancakes are fine but not perfectly round so they only get a 4, however because they are so fluffy i'm going to bump that up to a 5
Ohh no, that would lead to no punani for Doug
Those cup holders cost $150 to replace if broken, no joke
Ha - owned this car, loved it - babied it and clutch went out twice $$$
They used the clutch from the 550i V8, which was not strong enough for the V10. If you drive it like it is meant to be driven, the clutch will not last very long...😅
Today's the day, Doug's famous range Rover warranty is over!
Carmax is opening that giant bottle of champagne as we speak
@Rising Embers Gaming - why do people keep buying those trashy things? Range Rover is routinely rated among the poorest in customer satisfaction due to unreliability and maintenance costs. Some people are just “badge whores” I guess. “Why yes, I drive my Range Rover at least 5 days a month!” It’s kind of like that girlfriend who is the kindest, sweetest, most wonderful girl in the world until she gets sloppy drunk and acts like a psychotic bitch!

Oh ya? Neat.
Doug, I loved your cut while still talking about the issues with these cars. My buddy is a BMW mechanic and has always told me to stay away from V8 and higher cylinder BMW cars. He has said the new Turbo in-line 6 engines are reliable and definitely make power.
There’s still nothing like a V8 M3 and M5. They are amazing engines. My favorite engines from any BMW I have ever driven.
True, regarding V-8's and V-10's...I worked for a BMW dealer where we sold these M5's for $10K-$20K over sticker, only to see them come back for Vanos or engine replacement 10K miles later...I've personally owned 650's where I've experienced $10K engine repairs (coolant pipe). The straight sixes appear to be fine...cheers!
BMW is definitely still king of the inline 6. I'm actually glad they've gone back to them in the lower model F chassis M cars. The e92 M3 will always be a bit of a bastard car.
ricky v “my mechanic buddy” always precedes a dumb statement
Inline 6 is the best BMW`s for sure, i dont want any of these E-gen BMW`s cause i hate the look of them, but if i had one thrown after me id take a 330i over a M3 any day for exmaple. My buddy got a 2001 330i, more then enough power and way more reliable then a M3. If anyone told me they have bought a V8 or V10 BMW, id pray for them even tho im not religious...
(BTW, BMW fanboys in coming saying "BMW is the best cars ever", "your mechanic buddy is an idiot" and dumd things like that lol, M BMW`s arent reliable and have never been reliable. )
The Gaming Norwegian E gen? LMAO That’s like a handful of generations for each model that had an E designation, literally spanning nearly 50 years you dummy.
Just look at the 3 series.
E21 -1975-82/3
E30: 1982-‘94
E36: 1990-2000
E46: 1998-2006
E9x: 2004-2013
If you don’t like the looks of “E gen’s” you don’t like BMW
I bought one of these a little after watching this video. It is the best car I've ever driven. I don't recommend daily driving it though.
I will admit it's been more reliable than my E38 and E46, but parts are extremely expensive. Gonna cost about $1500 in parts to do the brakes, which desperately needs to be done... not to mention rod bearings need to be done this year.

The information in iDrive is just alphabetical order. Not prioritized by BMW.
A,b,b,c,d,t??? Thats slightly weird. Thinking about same thing
my brother just bought one yesterday. and we were on our way home the coolant started to leak and smoking. on our way home from buying it. we had to stop every 10 minutes to put water in it, so it didn't overheat.... BMW reliability.
I've got those wheels on my E46 M3. Many people hate them, but I love them.

Not a big secret
CarsOverPeople They’re starting to go up in value in the UK
The E60 was already selling for the same price as the E39, and they're dropping. E39's are starting to appreciate, so it's not looking good for the E60.
