Ted Moult was a comedian who did double glazing ads on television back in the 80s, the selling point being how much noise they kept out compared to regular windows. Ted Moult ended his own life with a gún, and Bernard was saying how no one heard a thing because his windows were shut.

I went to see him at his Embassy club in Manchester in the 90's. My stomach muscles were sore for days after from extreme belly laughing. There was a party of black people in that night and he did not go easy on them, but they were in hysterics. After the show, he went to their table with flowers for the ladies and sat with them laughing and joking for a good 10 minutes. Everybody got destroyed in equal measure by Bernard, white black or brown, male and female.

Adults forget they themselves told these bad jokes as kids and later on get offended by the same joke 10 years later on. Somehow we've all forgotten these are jokes and NOT commands and or the truth. Bernard Manning to some people represents real comedy, raw and nothing off the table. But for some he represents harm and hate. They are jokes that's all they are. I've heard all his jokes about races, disabled people, women and gays. Never offended and I see them as jokes and NOT reality. Love it thanks for the upload.

It's because the comedy on television was taken over by middle class students, who went for observational, clever comedy, which had its place and was funny as well. But it gave vent to the middle class ponces who run TV and the media, hatred and contempt for the working classes, and the sort of jokes you still hear in pubs and factories. Bernard was a working class comedian, can't have that.

Some things to remember about the Northern accent which might help you understand it at least a little better.
You might hear 'owt' or 'nowt (sounds like 'out' or 'nout') which means anything/something and nothing respectively, 'Have you got owt on you to buy a drink?' as an example, 'iv got nowt on me sorry.
You might hear the 'un' sound replacing the word 'one', when its used like 'hes a good'un that lad eh' or like Bernard said about the comics dropping like flies 'at least its the thin'uns' which is maybe obvious now, thin ones. Although if you hear 'wrong'un' its usually meant about a bad person, like a bad egg 'Hes a right wrong'un that Alan'. But its not really used on too many words but those examples are used.
You might also hear silent s, like the word 'isnt' sounds like 'int', but also to say 'in the' is also 'int' lol. So as an example, 'it isnt in the tin' is 'it int int tin', but said smoothly like one word. sounds like it tint tin tin.

  • @rerenaissance7487
    @rerenaissance7487 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Leonard Rossiter (Rigsby in Rising Damp, that you might have reacted to) advertised the drink, Cinzano Bianco. Ted Moult was a tv presenter, into old crafts stuff like Fred Dibnah, Ted advertised double glazing, with an emphasis on how good the soundproofing was. When he shot himself, the line in my crowd was "Hey love, go outside, tell me if you can hear this..." Same joke.
Bernard is an interesting figure. The Embassy, his club in Manchester, remained his home turf. And he lived in the "posh houses" in that part of the city until he died. But let's not gloss the racism over. His conviction that white people are just better was real and without irony. In an interview he was asked if anything upset him. He said kids with cancer. He meant it, he did a lot of charity work for children's causes. In the interview he said, completely seriously, not like Frankie Biyle might say it, to shock. "You've got to feel sorry for those kiddies. Even the black ones."

Manning was a typical working men's club type of entertainer, of the old school. Les Dawson was another who came up from a similar route. He was often said to be the bad boy of comedy, using a lot of double entendre and having most of his jokes focussed around race, sex, and religion. In real life, he was the opposite of his public persona, though, being a very clean living family man. If you like this style of comedy, you'll love Les Dawson, Frank Carson, and Charlie Williams.

A bit of context for you. The comment where you said about his accent being thick, and not getting what he said, Lennard Rossiter, from Rising Damp, used to advertise the vermouth alcoholic drink Cinzano Bianco, and he was saying that he's not sold a bottle of it since his death, and has got loads of bottles of it left in his club cellar. And Ted Moult was a British farmer, tv personality, that used to advertise double glazing in the early to mid '80's, in the adverts he would say about how sound proof double glazing was. Apparently, so I've just found out, he sadly took his own life. Hence the comment about not hearing the shot, because the windows were closed.

I'm from a similar area to Bernard Manning and even I had problems hearing what he was saying, EB. I think it's more the quality of the sound rather than his accent that's the problem here.

Sup EB. Have you ever seen The Ranch? It's a modern US Comedy that cracks me up. My apologies if you saw my other comment asking the same thing but I left it on a pretty old vid so I figured you might not have seen it. In any case I think it might make you laugh.

It's a hilarious show. I think I've seen all but the very last season of it.

@@TheEclecticBeard You might also enjoy Line of Duty, something I'm rewatching at the moment. It's a British show. There might be an American version I'm not sure but I'm speaking of the British one. It's not a comedy buy it is enjoyable and even gripping.

He was known as a "BLUE" comedian meaning his shows were for adults only. This was the 70s/80s comedy was real then - no political correctness. Times have changed and this would not get air time these days.

The last holiday my father had, he and my mother went to a club to see a variety show - singers, dancers, comedians etc - you know the drill.. Anyhow, the comedian is half way through his act and my dad has to go pee - so he stands up and the comedian says "Fuck me, Bernard Manning's in the house!"
My dad was almost a doppelganger for Manning. They had the same build, same hair style (almost), quite similar facially - though I would say my dad was a little bit more attractive at that age!
They both spoke their mind and weren't afraid to use more colourful language shall we say... :D
I just wish that my old man was £10 behind Manning when he (my father) died... that way I wouldn't be a skint bastard... hahaha.

Very strong Manc/Lancaster accent. Was a funny man in the 70's/80's but lost favor when being pc became the way. Was still a racist until he died.

i was honestly never a fan of his, but he owned a club about a ten minute drive from where i live, the embassy club, my mum went to see him once with some friends, one thing i remember, or was told about him was he was one of those comedians that if you got up to go somewhere during his time on stage you were going to get picked on by him, that night my mum went one of her friends who has a slight disability really not to visit the ladies but wouldnt move until he finished for fear of being targeted by him.

He is from Manchester. We used to go to his club, we laughed so much our stomach ached and next day we hated ourselves for laughing at his crass, crude, racist, material!
