Frank Carson also used to make the occasional appearance on a Saturday morning kids show called TISWAS(meaning today is Saturday, watch and smile), which was generally a program of cartoons, music and other entertainment for kids (of all ages), during which most of the people in the studio would get buckets of water thrown over them. It became so popular especially amongst university students that it spawned a late night version that was called OTT( for Over The Top) in which various personalities would appear and some of the entertainment got a bit nearer the knuckle including wet tee shirts for most of the females on the show and Frank and a few other comics would tell some of their more adult jokes.

Saturday, Saturday, Saturday is TIWAS day.
      Saturday, Saturday.
      Saturday is TISWAS.
Never a day to miss 'cos.
      Saturday is TISWAS day!
It was so much better than the BBC Saturday morning effort called Swap Shop. Kids would phone in and offer an something like Action Man (GI Joe kind of toy for Americans who don't know Action Man) with one leg and they wanted to swap it for a bike! Haha yeah, keep dreaming kid!

Frank Carson served in the Parachute Regiment. Served in the Middle East where he killed one terrorist, was shot in the leg & was the only survivor of a bomb blast that killed seven British servicemen. And helped in the clearing up of the bombing of the King David Hotel.

You will hear it time & time again EB ! Take a look at the " Comedian's ". The array of classic/funny British comedian's taking turns on stage to tell jokes that would actually make you laugh , can still be eye watering funny even after all these years. Bernard Manning will always be one of the best of the bunch from the Comedian's and even starred in Las Vegas at one stage. But sadly he is never remembered for his success and charity work he had for 45yrs, they just harp on about the odd racist joke he once told.

Hi E.B., Frank was so good, I remember watching him when I was growing up. He was able to do quick fire jokes, I believe part of their "turn" on the comedians, was put aside for just such a section. A classic comedian whose own laugh was infectious. I`m pretty sure, he also appeared on the gameshow Blankety Blank, as one of the celebrities. :)

Dave Allen was the only Irish comedian I respect from this era. He was the only one who didn't play off the Irish people are stupid trope all other comedians had to do with English audiences. Scottish comedians had the same problem if they were not Billy Connolly.
They were talented but had to play on certain English delusions of superiority to get on TV. Northern English, black, Welsh, (closeted) gay, women.. They all had to "take the piss" out of themselves or their cultures.

Classic comedian who learnt his trade doing the rounds of Working Men's Clubs. Which were very big in the North. They started bringing them on to national TV in the series "The Comedians" which started in 1971. Where they had to clean up a lot of their jokes. I used to watch them when I was still living at home in the 1970s. They were killed off in the UK in the 1980s by the backlash from the "Alternative Comedy" crowd. Who were mostly young left-wing political activists who labelled the old comedians sexist and racist. Most of their comedy was a protest against the establishment, and the Conservative Thatcher government. They faded a lot after Thatcher resigned, and British politics became much more bland.
