    Blue Peter is the longest running children's TV programme ever. I watched it in black and white as a kid and it's still going today. Sean is referencing the fact that you could send art work in as a child and they displayed some every week on the programme so, for us kids, it was the highest accolade you could get. You'd also get given one of the coveted and hard to get Blue Peter badges.

    I can remember playing spine in a sack. It wasn’t my favourite game, that would be ‘blood in the bath’. Dad would drop some animal blood into the bath when we were kids and we had to guess the animal. Could use viscosity, taste, colour. Just a great game. The old ones are the best.

      We played skull in the scuttle we took turns removing a lump of coal from the coal scuttle to expose the animal skull buried inside before guessing what animal the skull had come from a bit like Jenga. The best one was when dad used our pet hamster we all thought it was a mouse until he gave us a clue by pretending to dig in my little sisters hair. She was so upset at not winning she cried for weeks.

    You just reminded me of the Sean Lock series "15 Storeys High", which was one of the first things I ever watched when BBC Three launched.
    It also starred Benedict Wong, who is now of course known as "Wong" in Doctor Strange.
    (not a very imaginative character name, but I bet it made things easier on-set. lol)
    BBC Three also reminded me of "Two Pints of Lager, and a Packet of Crisps" on BBC Three.
    That series could be a bit variable, but some episodes were hilarious.

      Or, if you are Bob Mortimer, do such utterly bonkers things IRL that even when you explain them, nobody with even a slight sense of reality could possibly believe that you are telling the truth.
      The man's real genius was anticipating as a child that a show like WILTR would eventually come along. And that he'd be well-known enough to appear on it. So he made it a goal to do utterly f'n crazy things with his life so he could fool everyone on it. Visionary.

  • @ner0p
    @ner0p 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I get the reason behind the feeling of wanting to encourage kids by telling them that they did a good job, fair enough, but I think that realistically, if you want a kid to succeed you should just be honest (in a tactful way, of course). Most times the kid will be sad but then shift that to strive for improvement. Obviously there are situations where being frank and honest are not helpful, and most times it is hard to tell, but I don't think that cheering them up for most things is helpful.
    It's like telling them a story, and that story becomes part of their reality (Santa Claus), it's fine for a while but every adult knows that at some point their kids will know that it's just fantasy, and they'll be okay with that, but before they are they will be sad, they will cry, they will resent you for lying to them, they'll think you are a bad person... until they're not resentful anymore and they love you anyway, and their life goes on.
    Self-worth if not something that can be taught by encouragement or otherwise, it's something one learns from gauging their accomplishments versus expectations. If you set their expectations too low, eventually the real world will crush them, on the other hand the extreme opposite will be as destructive because it can remove any sort of motivation. Everything needs to be balanced. This is why having parents, generally with different temperaments, gives kids a healthy balance between bitterness and sweetness, approval and disapproval (depending on the context, any of the parents can be one or the other), so long as there is an equilibrium.

    Apart from being a long running childrens tv show Blue Peter is also a maritime flag , maybe you're confusing Blue Peter with "Black Pete" ? a character in dutch folklore who accompanies St Nicholas (Father Xmas).

    Wait until you're trying to get her to eat vegetables. You will break out a cheerleader outfit if the little monster even agrees to be in the same room as a pea or a carrot.

    Sean messed up, there wasn’t a Blue Peter gallery, he meant “Take Hart” which was an art show presented by Tony Hart. Which included sections with a plasticine character called Morph. Which were utterly brilliant.
