I'm imagining some really old guy who's into classical music trying to search for Komm Susser Tod by Bach but instead keeps getting results about an anime movie in which a 14 year old with depression pilots a giant robot and ends the whole world.

It's a weird word. "Εὐαγγέλιον" is pronounced like it was in this video. If you pronounce it like the Latin "evangelium," it uses a soft g and different syllable emphasis. There's no "proper" way to pronounce the title. If there were, I think the Greek pronunciation of "Νέον Γένεσις Εὐαγγέλιον" would make the most sense despite it sounding like "yenesis."
The song is called Come Sweet Death because it's literally about suicide. The protagonist has to decide if he wants to reset the world or turn everyone, himself included, into Fanta soup.
The movie before End of Evangelion, Death(True)2, does have several callbacks to Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major, including a credits’ titles scene halfway through (since it’s basically two shorter movies pasted one after the other, and yes the production history of Evangelion is dark and full of terrors) So, matter of fact, Komm Sußer Tod is not composed to sound like the Canon on a superficial level. It sounds like it because it had a narrative and psychological role in the story earlier on. People just don’t watch Death(True)2, which I get but that’s how y’all misunderstand these things.
Evangelion's version is for depression. Bach's version is about an impending sense of doom and accepting that, with or without the depression that comes along with it. Maybe i just like dark organ music, but i binge bach's one easier.
while the song itself doesnt resemble come sweet death by bach, do keep in mind that they used bach songs elsewhere such as air on the G string and jesu, joy of man's desiring, and the main character shinji even plays cello suite no. 1... heck evangelion is what got me into bach in the first place
You know what is the scariest thing than anything else? That time when Humanity screams out of terror as they turn into Tang, i was never be able to get these screams out of my mind whenever I'm alone.
At first time hearing it it was completly normal, but now i'm never be able to hear it again. Everytime i'm watching anything that shows this scene i entirely mute my phone's volume, there was a video i remember put 'Tsubasa Wo Kudasai' as the background song instead of Komm Susser Tod while this traumatizing god-like scream acting plays in this scene.
They may be actually scream in cheer but that sounds completly nightmarish. Just imagine your working on the ISS, ALONE, and then seeing this giant white humanoid female literally turning half the planet into LCL as half of the world (babies, toddlers, children, teenagers, adults, elders and everything you think of, even yourself, or pets and animals) cheerfully scream yet in a terrifying way as their mortal forms melt and their souls get sealed inside that humanoid, wyd in this situation?
Komm Susser Todd (the anime song) was made to sound similar to Hey Jude by the Beatles. Anno actually wanted to use that song for the third impact scene but couldn’t get the rights.
Another thing is that Ano wanted to use Hey Jude by the Beatles but couldn't, so the music team made a similar-sounding song instead but still has very similar choirs
Fuckkn love the Eva treatment of the song, I’d never have heard it otherwise. It’s also a great funeral song if you want to be depressing and peppy at the same time.
Somehow I doubt it was purely superficial. The chord progression similarities and the use of classical music a few times throughout the show and movie in important battle scenes aslong with Shinji playing the Cello make it fall too perfectly in place. Nonetheless I don't really care abt that its just food for thought. Fascinating video, never knew this.
"Some superficial reference". The song and the movoe is literally about committing suicide hence Komm susser tod aka come sweet death. It's anything but a superficial reference.
I mean the song in Evangelion is literally about someone choosing suicide. While making the name German was probably done superficially to reference Bach, the names meaning of "Come, Sweet Death" fits the songs subject perfectly.
I am playing this in my wind ensemble. I was searching for the recording a few days ago and I was wondering why that blue haired anime girl kept popping up! 🤦♀️
I'm pretty sure the song has a lot to do with the namesake. The singer is speaking of their regrets and what goes through their mind dyring their final moments of life, maybe its not "sweet" but its definitely "come death"

I’m 18 and I had that exact problem. I hated how difficult it was to find, then I realised that putting “Bach” in the search term was a good solution.
So i had that exact 'problem'. But that led me to discover one of the best audiovisual experiences I've ever had in my life, so not a problem at all

Being familiar with these two pieces and even lightly studying Pachebel's Canon, I can't believe the similarity flew past me
It's a super common chord progression though, right behind the 4 chords of pop.
I love the transition of bachs komm süßer tod and ariannes version! The text changes into LCL red just as the 3rd impact is happening
