Lid open error on iRobot Roomba S9+

  • Approximately 40% of Roomba S9+ purchases have to be sent back due to failure of some aspect of the device. For those lucky enough to get a working unit the reviews are universily good and their owners rave about them. I bought one yesterday knowing full well there was a good chance that I would also get one that had to be returned before I got one that worked. Sadly I lucked out. My unit detected that the lid was open, even when it wasn't, and so I could not use the device as it won't run with the lid open. This video shows the error I got.
    Tip to any one buying a Roomba S9+ once you've got one that works by all accounts they work great, but their construction is so sloppy that you must really check them out before your returns policy expires. Some errors can be fixed, supposedly the poor contact of the lid for example can be improved by adding a pad of solder to each of the four contacts. But for such an expensive device, you shouldn't have to resort to work-arounds. So keep sending it back and force the company to make their shit properly.

    Can we all agree that for $1100, this roomba has way too many issues ? Unreal. Fix your shitty product. There shouldn’t be this many issues.

    Yep. Had the same issue on day 2. Used tweezers to pull up the 4 pins.

    I got mine on ebay for like 750 and it had this issue. I took a small pair of plyers and pulled all 4 of the contacts up some on the vacuum side. I got them to sit about a 1/8 inch higher and it corrected issue.

      Nice one, that was a good idea. I saw a video that added solder to the copper contacts in the lid, but I like your idea better as the copper of the contacts would be a better conductor, and your idea preserves them. Plus you avoid needing to take a soldering iron to your expensive robot. I would hate to overheat the pads and burn out the circuit board! Also nice one getting the S9+ for $750!!

    Worse robot purchase ever. I have one and i am going to return it. And this is far from being the only reason.

    The unit only checks the lid at the start of a clean, so you can hold it down, wait for it to start, then release. I know, this isn't ideal. I know, this isn't perfect. But, it works.

      I used to do this but now it is giving me an error for missing bin so 🤷‍♀️….

    • @6catscrew
      @6catscrew ปีที่แล้ว

      That was true for me, but not now. It literally does this multiple times throughout the cleaning cycle & it stops completely. I’ve been adding a weight to it to prevent it.

    all you have to do is take some needle nose pliers... and pull them up a little... or you can short them all together and throw away the damn lid... all that lid does is short the leads out completing the circuit... that's all... so pull them up or short them all together.

    I wish I had this issue instead of "Error 9" on mine. Literally just spins in circles and says the "Bumper is stuck". How did your situation turn out in the end?

    • @AusFastLife
      @AusFastLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the unit in this video we took back, since like I said, I wanted to hold the company to account for shoddy craftsmanship rather than having to fix it myself. The next unit I got worked well, the lid stayed shut enough for the unit to work. When I go to do a clean I still get a "shut the lid" error message, but at least when I press on the lid the error goes away and the lid remains shut enough to do an entire clean. I think if I do Andrewglass25's suggestion below (pulling up the copper contacts on the vaccum side) that will fix that. Poor craftsmanship aside, we are really happy with the unit and how well it cleans. We have taken ours to Australia which is where we live and it is working fine which I am glad about since it is not easy to get it fixed from here.

      @@AusFastLife Thanks for the response. I saw your other replys on a few other comments. One more question: I had an i7 prior to this one and loved it, but when vacuuming with an actual upright vacuum after a week of the i7 doing its job, I was pretty disappointed to see how much dust/dirt was still remaining in our low pile carpet. It looked clean, but seemed as if the lines being "combed" in to the carpet were giving the appearance of the carpet being clean. I returned it shortly after. How would you say the carpet cleaning ability is on the S9 in comparison?

    • @AusFastLife
      @AusFastLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Str8ABH That's a good question. We only have three low pile rugs on the floor that the Roomba cleans, one in front of the front door, one infront of the back door and one at the bottom of the stairs. Our medium length haired German Shepheard does sleep on the one by the back door so it gets a fair bit of hair on it, also I have a cockatoo and her cage is near that same back mat and it gets a lot of her bird seed on it. I notice that the Roomba S9+ detects the rugs well and automatically switches into high vacuum mode for carpets. I have been happy with how well the S9+ cleans those mats. Having said that, they are just mats and they are very short pile industrial carpet mats, so I do think they are easier to clean than say proper carpet. The rest of our downstairs is hard wood floors and the S9+ does a wonderful job on that. When researching robot vaccuums it appeared widely accepted that robot vacs cannot do as good a job as a standalone, powered vacuum cleaner. The suction from a manual vaccuum cleaner is always going to be stronger due to the power of the mains powered engine in them, compared to the very small, low powered engines that can be included in robot vacuum cleaners. You will always need to do a clean periodically with a proper vacuum cleaner if you have carpet. The idea of the robot vacuum cleaners is that they do the inbetween maintenace cleans, ie pick up the pet hair, or the dirt walked in on shoes more regularly than most people have time to do with a full vaccuum clean. So they just help clean, they don't completely take over cleaning.
      We have found with hardwood floors however, that the S9+ does a good enough job that we don't need to vacuum with a vaccuum cleaner at all which is great. Lastly I did read, when researching robot vacs, that the S9+ has the highest suction of any model of robot vac, and with the wider, hair-tangle resistant rubber/silicone brushes, plus the automatic high power suction mode for carpet, that the S9+ can clean carpets better than other models or brands of robot vacs. That's my personal take on the unit any way.

    • @Str8ABH
      @Str8ABH 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, I completely agree that they'll never be near as good as a decent upright, but I was hoping to notice a slightly reduced amount of dog hair that fills the upright vacuum's container in each weekly use of it. I cleaned the carpets thoroughly with an upright prior to purchasing and using the i7 in hopes that it would maintain that clean for much longer before my Huskie's hair retained ownership of every floor surface of my household, but no such luck. I bought the S9+ instead since it's suction power was slightly improved, but so far the reliability of the S9 seems to have an extremely high failure rate with issues that render the whole vacuum worthless. Anyway, thank you for your answer and I look forward to my replacement arriving in a few days to see for myself.

      @AusFastLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, the second one I got is also giving me a lid open error, but this one at least will run when I push the lid down. The blow back from the self emptying function seems to push the lid up a bit, so then I just have to push the lid back down. Either way it is a hassle, and I wish the company would fix it.
