Just a couple of clarifications/updates. I just went through the process of converting my DL from my home state in the USA, I had a car and motorcycle endorsement so it was extremely easy and took about 3 hours (I used an agent in Bangkok). Just to clarify you can get a driver's license on a tourist visa, however, this really only works if you can convert your home license. It takes about two months to get an appointment to take classes and tests in Bangkok so a tourist visa is unlikely to have enough time left on it at least in Bangkok, other provinces may not be as busy and maybe appointments are easier to get. Also, as far as using the work permit as proof of address it depends on if you have an older permit (blue book) that has the address in it then you can use it, but the new digital work permits do not have the address on them so unfortunately, you would need to go get the Certificate of Residency from Immigration. Currently, it is 200THB and takes 2 to 3 weeks for mail delivery (I have heard other Immigration offices can have your certificate ready for pickup in an hour). I don't know about other agents but my agent has an LTO Officer in Bangkok to handle customers, Miss Pim took care of everything, all I had to do was take a picture and do the reaction, color/eye test, and get a picture taken. The process was so smooth and worth every penny in my opinion. The cost for both car and motorbike license conversion was 2900THB. Hope this update helps.

took the test....in thailand apparently if your car seat is not appropriate for the seat, you just turn off the airbag and if you are injured in a crash, and its "not appropriate" to move you with a blanket "it is still not appropriate to move, but you can move a back injured patient if you must". Also use the clutch and the accelerator when driving thru flooded road.....you cannot make this stuff up

more clarifications and updates and basics. 1, Thailand will only allow you to use an international permit for 1 year. renewals not accepted. Carrying a passport in Thailand is a LEGAL requirement not for ID but to show you are legally in the country with the correct visa. a thai driving licence will not do this. now to get a Thai driving licence you MUST take an online test and only if you pass this and get the QR code that you present at the DLT office will they even talk to you. you can use agencies BUT!!!!! be aware they often do the tests for you and apply on your behalf and this makes them and the licence 100% illegal and it is you that will go to court not them. also they charge much more than it does to do it direct

FYI International drivers license is only valid for 3 months in Thailand - even if it says one year in the license. If you stay longer than 3 months you will need a Thai license.

Do you know if the online test is acceptable for your first time? It's a bit confusing looks only for renewal? Found out the answer the online course can be used instead of the in-class learning! Chiang mai

Several foreigner friends in Thailand have been advised that their application will fail if they are colourblind. Anyone aware of any other country that disqualifies colourblind people from driving? I'm from UK and hold a full driving licence. Colourblindness was never an issue.

You said that the proof of address you got was in a sealed envelope, how can you make a copy of it then? BTW I am a math teacher in the US and looking at what I will need if I go out there.

when it comes to the proof of address letter you don't need a copy, you leave the letter with the land and transport office, if you are using a work permit as proof of address you will need to make a copy to leave with them. My apologies I didn't make it very clear in the video.

Hi Ben, have a question for the documents :
    1. Do I need the driving license from my original country?
    2. For the working permit, do I need stamps on it copy? Or the copy is enough for them?
    Thanks in advance

If you have driving licenses from your home country I recommend taking them with you.
As for work permit I would take the original document and a photocopy when you go, they will need a copy of it signed by you but may ask to see the original document when you are there.

BTW the online video isn't the theory test dude. That video is only good for the renewal from 2 year to 5 year for your license or transferring your foreign license into a thai one.
