    In this video I wanted to talk about the retirement visa for Thailand as it is one of the most popular long term visa options to stay in Thailand. This visa type has many requirements that are not well known and I wanted to lay them out in a video on my channel. Although I have never been on a retirement visa myself I have met many people out here that stay on them, what I know is based on what I have learnt out here from people staying on a Retirement visa.
    In this video I:
    - Compare the 3 types of retirement visas.
    - list the documents and financial requirements to qualify for the visa.
    - Outline the process for getting the retirement visa.

    It is not a Visa, it is an extension. It is not a retirement extension it is an extension based on being over 50 years of age regardless of what the "retirement " stamp indicates. A visa is obtained outside Thailand . An extension is obtained inside Thailand.

    When applying for my OA visa in Australia I only had to show the Embassy that I had more than Bt800,000 in an Australian Bank. My Aus $33.000 was in a bank managed retirement funds. (actually more) I had to prove I could obtain this amount, only $33,000 which I did. There were other requirements police report, medical etc. all signed off by an Australian JP. The amount of Aus$33,000 was in an Australian bank and remained there all OK. The OA visa was issued which is good for 2 years with the extension. The money shown only had to shown it was in an Australian bank and could be available or just keep it, (surrender amount at least) I did not have to put it in a Thai Bank account and could spend all of on arrival in Thailand as I required (I have never had a Thai Bank account ever)....when getting the extension after 1 year (less 1 day) for another 1 year I did not have to show $33,000 in Australian or Thai bank. Remember Thailand does not count the day you arrive. You have to arrive on previous day to what the visa is current or you are a day late and visa will be void at midnight. (a trap for applicants). I have lived in Thailand on/off for 10 years either on retirement visas or 3 month tourist visas, all obtained in Australia. P.S. tourist visas obtained for me from a Thai Consul Perth W.A., OA retirement Visa only available from a Thai Embassy Canberra or Sydney Consul which is part of Thai Embassy. I come from Western Australia.)

      It looks like you are correct upon further research, I was under the impression health insurance was required for any visa given on the grounds of retirement, however I can only see online it being required for the OA and the OX.

    you do not need health insurance on an "O" retirement visa ,that's the big difference between the two O's . You now also need to keep your dosh in the Thai bank account all year round with the 800K still intact straight after the renewal for 3 months and a minimum of 400 K (I think but could be slightly less ) for the remaining months until the 2 months before reapplying . Personally I do not like health insurance and prefer to have sufficient funds for any eventuality , My last renewal was eventful to say the least ,almost unbelievable and worthy of a best seller script and that's after nearly 20 years of previous visits to my friends at Thai immigration .

    • @timwalker2458

      You don't need a criminal check at all if you apply for a non 0 in Thailand. Nor do you need any insurance.

    Also. To enter Thailand by air you must have a return airfare out date paid ticket, so arranging your retirement visa from a tourist visa entry be prepared to trash that return ticket or pay for a fully flexible ticket to change a date immediately once approved in Thai.

    Hod do you open a bank account which would require an address when not yet living in the country and how long of a 65000 input in months needs to qualify as proof, say renting a house off shore ?

  • @Shamrah.A

    Interesting. Nicely explained 👍🏻 Very strange why they have a only a select few countries for OX!!) Would've been quite a great option. I also wonder, if it's someone who travels often (abroad) how would they count the 90 days 🤔 that's something I've not been able to find (yet).
    And it's either 800k or 65k monthly, yeah. Not both. Quite reasonable to have options. Again, pity OX is not available to all countries)
    Any suggestions for a good health insurance that actually works, not just for documents. Only AIA?)

    • @benjoewalker
      @benjoewalker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      When it comes to the 90 days reporting, they get reset every time you re-enter Thailand. So if you travel outside of Thailand and return your 90 days is re-set on your return to Thailand, (make sure you have a re entry permit or multi entry visa)
      For myself I have only used AIA so unfortunately I cant recommend any other health insurance providers as I don't have experience with them, always worth shopping around though.

    Excellent video Ben, very informative! One thing I was wondering that you didn't cover; when it comes to the renewal each year, do you still need the 800k in the bank account? Or can it be a lesser amount? Thanks!

    • @BarryPiper
      @BarryPiper ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It must be not less than 800K two months before and three months (i.e. five consecutive months) after the date on which you apply for an extension. For the other seven months of the year it can drop below 800K but must never fall below 400K.

    • @bengmelea8646

      I don't think you need health insurance if you apply for the "O" visa but you will if applying for the O-A or O-X. Having said that however, and applying for a O visa after having worked in Thailand and paid monthly from your salary into the Thai state social security system (ประกันสังคม) you can elect (Section 39, มาตรา 39) to keep paying into this system when you switch from your Thai work visa B category into the Thai retirement O category. This is very cheap health insurance in retirement, about THB420/mth, but it is a public hospital, not private, of your choice.

      Not technically correct (or legal). The agent may be doing the extension under the table, and the agent "fees" will be high; probably around 20,000 baht or more.

      @BarryPiper ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don't have the 800K baht in the bank, agent fees will be high - perhaps around 200K baht or more because they are probably doing it under the table. If you have the money in the bank and you're just hiring an agent to hold your hand through the process, that should be pretty cheap; maybe just 5000 baht. Once you see how easy the annual retirement renewal/extension is, you won't need the agent any more.

    Hi there, I'm a little confused regards one thing. In the flow chart at 1:51 illustrates that an arm off the Non Immigrant visa is 'work', implying that once you have that retirement visa you can then work. But I read that you cannot work on a retirement visa as that is obviously illegal. Maybe I've just read it wrong and the chart illustrates that there is a non immigrant visa option that is a work visa. Perhaps thats right. Let me know.
    If I want to move to Thailand and seek work what should i do? Would i travel there as a tourist and then apply for a Non Immigrant work visa upon arrival? People travelling there to seek work and/or set up a business do so on what type if visa?
    I used to work in Bangkok many years ago and had a work permit but thats a while back and things may have changed.
    Appreciate any feedback and thoughts. Thanks.

    May I seek advice for 2 questions? 1. If I already have health insurance in my own country, do I need to purchase another one within Thailand? 2. Assuming I had applied for OA visa for the first round and I am already in Thailand and due for renewal for O visa the second year, do I have to go translate all my documents from English to Thai for submission? My home country's working language is English by the way. Greatly appreciate advice please. Thank you.

    I have three comments.
    1) You did not mention that in most countries you apply for Thai visas online.
    2) I applied for OA visa from France as I am a Swedish citizen living in France and you have to apply from the country where you recide. To my surprise the embassy in France informed me just one week before my booked flight that if you apply for a Thai OA visa from France they do not accept a monthly income of Thb 65 000+. They only accept money deposited in a bank at lesst equal to Thb 800000. I contacted them and argued that that was not clearly stated in the online form. So they said ok we will issue you a visa if you give us an official statement from from your Swedish bank of your monthly pensions converted in to €. I fixed that in three days and thought everything was ok. But it was not. While I was waiting for the airport shuttle outside the hotel near CDG airport Paris a Thai lady from the embassy called me and said her boss wanted to se my criminal record from France as well. Normally for an OA visa it is enough with the criminal record from the country of your citizenship. So I checked in and found a bar with access to the very slow airport wifi and the girl from the embassy was on my phone all the time to guide me through the procedure to apply online for the proof of no criminal record in France. One our before my flight was leaving for Bangkok it was finished. But the girl from the embassy said we do not have time to issue the visa in one hour so please check your email after you landed in Bangkok. When I had landed in Bangkok i checked my email and there was my OA visa. They said that I am the only person in France that got an OA visa based on my income. So a warning try to avoid to apply for OA visa from France if you can.
    3) When I arrived to the immigration desk I just showed the immigration officer the visa in my phone. No propylene there but she took a long time to explain to me how it worked. She said that if I leave Thailand before the expiry date and come back no later than the expiry date I can stay another year without having to reapply. She did not say anything about reporting to immigration every 90th day.

    Excellent video and well explained. A question I have though is when applying for the OA visa, how can one show the required funds in a Thai bank? Does it mandate then, to first travel to Thailand, open a bank account and then file the papers in the home country?
    Also, can monthly income be from one’s investment corpus? Many of us may not have any pension.
    Thanks in advance for your response and clarification.

    • @RM-vm5eb
      @RM-vm5eb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For the OA you don't need to show funds in a Thai Bank account for the initial OA Visa. You can show bank statements from your home country. (The website also states you need a letter of verification from the financial institution however i wasn't asked for it although I did get one) If you renew in Thailand the following year you will need funds in the Thai bank account. In terms of the income requirement I think you just need to demonstrate that you have the funds coming in, it does not specifically require they come from a pension fund. In terms of the insurance requirement I would recommend only getting insurance from the list of participating companies on the Thai immigration website in the OA Visa requirement section. There is a specific insurance certificate that immigration expects and these companies will provide the precise document in Thai and English. (Verify this before buying the insurance with the insurer. ) It is possible to have a non-participating insurance company fill out a separate form but I have heard people have had issues with this process.

    • @colinbell8250
      @colinbell8250 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am thinking the same. You will need a rental property contract to open a bank account first. Seems like a tourist entry first to set this up, deposit funds, then go home and start the visa process only then.

    • @RM-vm5eb
      @RM-vm5eb ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@colinbell8250 You will not be able to open a bank account on a tourist visa and you will probably need a TM30 and not just a rental contract. You also cannot apply for the O visa from outside Thailand even if you have sufficient funds in a Thai bank.. If you can afford the health insurance and you have no criminal record and you're healthy just use your local bank statement and get the OA. Then you can easily open the thai bank account once you arrive for the next years renewal and fund it apppriately. If you want the O visa. Come to Thailand. Get the 90 day extension immediately. Open the bank account right away and then convert the 90 day into a 1 year O. You'll also need to get the TM 30. You might want to consult a visa agent prior to arrival if you're going to go for O in Thailand. So many things that need to be done in a short time. The OA has a lot of painful steps and its time consuming but it's easy. You just upload the documents and they email you a visa to print.

      Hello Bell
      Looks like you have the relevant information or the experience about getting the O retirement visa.
      Therefore, I would be very happy to consult you on some specific points ...
      I was told that I need to apply for a 60 days tourist visa here in my country before arriving to Thailand. Is this step still important or unnecessary if I am anyway going to apply for a 90-days O retirement visa at the immigration offices immediately after entering the country ?

    • @bental772
      @bental772 ปีที่แล้ว

      And one more question about opening Thai Bank account.
      You said that people can't open a bank account with a tourist visa. If I will bring the TM30 document from the landlord of the residence where I will live ... does that will solve the problem ?

      If you enter Thailand on a tourist visa, or visa exemption, you may be asked to show proof of onward travel. This is obviously a challenge if you are unsure of the date you want to leave.
      I don't have a good answer for you, but perhaps you could look for airlines that allow you to change the date or offer refunds.

      800kBt or 65k per month in income. It can be deposited into any bank, but you'll need to provide evidence of those deposits in a number of consecutive months. SSI paperwork and say Teamster Pension Benefits paper work won't get you anywhere .It has to come to Thai Bank directly for a year and the years after .And Thai banks not have FDIC ,so if your bank goes belly up , good buy money .My account has the 800,000 in which I reported to US IRS and they now have extended the FDIC umbrella and covers my deposit .

      I am going to be honest, this is not something I know a lot about. My understanding is that you would be able to apply for the retirement visa yourself, so long as you meet all the requirements, your spouse would be able to get a visa as a dependent on you. I do now know how to go about making that arrangement, so could only recommend speaking to your local embassy or visa agent.
