How I Got My Thai Motorcycle License

  • The time had come to give Black Beauty a rest and get my Thailand Driving License for a motorcycle in Chiang Mai. I set about finding the best Thai driving school for me and putting the plan into action. I went to Chiang Mai Driving School in Nong Hoi, south of the city. The application was very easy, I just needed to get the required documents, and then I could start right away. I was only comfortable being a legal rider in Thailand and getting the correct license. In this vlog, I walk you through everything I needed to do. There are many different ways of getting a license in Thailand but this is the way I did it. All links are below.

    I moved to Pattaya recently from Canada. I came with my International Driving Permit and say this is a must if you can get it before coming. Certificate of Residence took 3 hours at immigration in Jomtien and was processed on the same day for a cost of 300 baht. You may need an original for both motorcycle and car licenses plus to buy a bike or 900 baht total. With the international driving permit, the cost for the car is 205 baht and motorcycle was 105 baht. 310 baht total for 2 years. No course or training required yet if you come to Thailand with no experience on 2 wheels, I would say training is a must as I had 21 years of riding many bikes in my life. I went through multiple trainings in Canada and saved my ass numerous times thus far. Be safe to all.

    Hi Wayne, If you have your Uk motorcycle license and an international drivers permit you just need to visit Ching Mai DVLA on the Hang Dog road, with your medical from the doctor, residency and passport with your visa in. Watch the video for 2.5 hours then take the computer test. You'll need to get a separate Thai drivers license for driving a car.I went there but at the time I did not have my residency I will moving out this year sometime on a retirement visa. Apart from the practice tests because even for the practice tests you need the knowledge of Thailand Road laws, rules and vehicle. Looking forward to your response

      They give you practice runs on the computer and some staff will help you on the practice ones. As you mentioned, the watching of videos is all in Thai, you just watch. This is helpful. I hate jumping through hoops, but understand why they want that cooperation. As far as those 45 questions, I wonder if there is an English language edition of those 50 questions I could read up on beforehand, { like on a flight over } .........Knowing this helps one develop a landing plan. With Ebikes coming down the pike at an elaborate rate now, an Ebike might be the answer, but they do not have as much road side in Thailand as we do were I live I noticed, so maybe not. I wonder if they would just transfer a "motorcycle license" I already have from the state I live in the USA? Had to jump through hoops to get that already. A civilized state requires educational models, especially regarding safety.

    • @WalkAboutWayne

    Thanks for the vlog… Thinking about going the “legal” route, when I come back and was wondering what that may entail. Sounds straight forward… I was thinking I could just get a lease for a couple months while in Bangkok and get my med certificate and residency…. And another thing to mention is, that not only is it illegal to ride/drive in Thailand without a Thai license, travel insurance will NOT cover you if you are involved in an accident and aren’t licensed, or falling the rules. So technically, I suppose that means, even if you are just a passenger (think motorbike taxi) and involved you in an accident, you will also not be covered if not wearing a helmet.

    • @WalkAboutWayne
      @WalkAboutWayne  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Always best to be all legal i think. Sure, insurance won't be worth the paper it's written on without a licence. I think you're correct with the passenger also, especially if not wearing a helmet.
