  • Vlog #45 Getting a Thai Drivers License Part 2
BTS Bang Chak, Bang Chak Department of Land Transportation Bangkok Thailand
00:47 day 1: make an appointment
    01:36 day 2: classroom course
03:53 day 2: the written test
    08:16 day 3: retesting
09:24 day 4: driving test / receive license
Check out Vlog #45 for the additional process of taking a driving class and passing the written and driving tests to receive a motorcycle license if you don’t already have a license from your home country. It’s the same process for also receiving a car license if you don’t have a car drivers license. The documentation steps are exactly the same as this guide so the next vlog is just a supplement for those that don’t already have a driver’s license from their home country and have to take the class and test in Thailand.

(The test questions and answers were exactly the same as in the actual test so nothing has been updated as of Dec 2017. You should be able to pass by just studying the questions and answers. I recommend you print this out and review it during the 4 hour class)

What is up guys welcome back to LIVETRAVELASIA
So today is a followup guide to the previous vlog #44 where I went over how to apply for a new or renew a driver’s license without a course or test if you already have a valid driver’s license from your home country. I had a California Driver’s License and it worked.
This vlog however will go over the process of applying for a new driver’s license if you don’t already have a drivers license which I had to do because I was only certified for a car on my CA Driver’s license and I wanted a motorcycle license.
Now the first thing you have to do is make an appointment. There are only 5 slots per day so you may have to wait a while for the next appointment. Now I am not sure why we had to because the classes seemed to house more than 5 people but I am guessing the appointment is for an English class which they didn’t put us into anyways. So my guess is if you come before 8:30 you may not have to make an appointment.
I actually recommend you come before 8:30 however so you have plenty of time to make the photocopy, submit the documents, take the physical test, and I recommend you get your medical certificate ahead of time when you come to make the appointment as I don’t think the clinic is open before 9. Be aware that there are longer lines in the morning. I made a super in depth guide to this part of the process in the previous vlog #44 so please check that out on the link in the description below.
Now what’s going to differ from the process of the previous guide for those that don’t have a valid drivers license is the course and testing. They sent us up to the third floor to a big class being conducted in Thai and gave us this booklet with English translations for all the street signs and test questions to study. This does not go over everything you will be tested on for the written test as we will later found out. So checkout the link in the description below for the actual test questions on a site this cool expat made that you can review before taking the test.
So after another 2 hours in class, we test
After you get your paperwork, sit down and wait. You’ll eventually see people walking over to where they explain the road test and obstacle course. You’ll need to do a lot of monkey see monkey do as everything was conducted in Thai. What you’re seeing now is the obstacle course.
They’ll test your ability to drive straight by making you driver over a raised section on the ground about a foot wide, than you’ll need to weave through cones about 2 meters wide.
Before this section however, you’ll be going through an area with stop signs and turns replicating a real road. Just make sure you’re using your turn signals which you might miss because the explanation of the course was done in Thai.
Thank you guys so much for checking out our vlog, I really hope it was informative and or amusing,
Remember to show me some love by smashing that subscribe button and as always, checkbook with us every Saturday for new vlogs about living and traveling in Asia.

Fun fact : the tank question, similar or exactly the same, was also in my Chinese written test in 2008!!!

Was about to ask you in Vlog #44 ...but... you did that one! Thanks a lot, this will help me tremendously. I've decided not to renew my driver's license in my home country for complicated reasons thus doing the Thai tests as if I was a newbie (forget I've been driving for 29 years :)).
Does that mean I need to pass TWO theoretical & practical exams (motorbike and car)? If you don't know, don't worry, I'll search it.
Also @12:16: "... use the motorbike to avoid been shaking down by cops" Meaning you need to give your car DL to the renting company? You can't keep it instead? How about a photocopy? Sorry, maybe it's me being slow tonight and not getting the big picture here :-P

Well you’ll get two licenses one for car and motorcycle... not sure about having to take the written test twice as it’s identical. They do t have separate tests for car and motorcycle. The driving test is different however. Haven’t had any experiences w it but the office should take care of it if you go. The English version is translated by Google and some of the questions are problematic. I encountered one today and the options A and B are totally the same, so I didn’t know which to choose. Then the staff member told me the two options in Thai version were different but got lost in translation. Because of that I lost one point. Very ridiculous. And also came across one question asking what the car ABCD should do. But in the image, there were only กขคง. Luckily I can read those letters. Thailand is a joke. They don’t even bother to hire a proper translator for this. 😢
