One issue that was not discussed was whether a stay exceeding 180 days (whatever the number of entries) in a calendar year will lead to tax liability, but I suppose we just have to assume that, at least in theory, you have tax obligations in Thailand if you stay longer than 180 days.
    This visa, at least as it was announced, does bring legal clarity and the right to work in Thailand for foreign employers, which is great, but whether there's tax liabilities beyond that period of time is something I haven't seen addressed. Thanks again.

    If anybody from the Consular is reading these comments please consider revising the rules for residency next. There are many of us who are married to Thai citizens and have lived, worked, and payed taxes here for many years, yet it's still very hard to get residency. Could you consider automaticly granting residency if certain criteria are met? If somebody is married, has stayed for X years or payed X Baht in Tax then they are granted a residence visa automatically for instance. I realise your main focus is tourism, but we also contribute greatly to the economy and the annual Non-Im O visa with 90 day reporting is very inconvienient. Thank you.

    Chris, Good interview. If you ever have another meeting the DDG or better, with the Immigration Department, please question them on the necessity of TM47 (90 Day Reporting). Division 1 is now requiring in-person reporting "Your application for "STAYING LONGER THAN 90 DAYS" has been rejected. For first-time requests of a 90-day notification in each country visit, in-person presentation at the immigration office is required." It's a pain in the butt how often they flip flop at Division 1. All the best to you.

    Thanks for the confirmation on the 180 day rule. This is far more generous than I originally thought. I just got my approval for the new Destination Thailand Visa today. I submitted it on the new web site originally on July 3, then they asked for more documentation on July 30: a fresh financial statement, my Spanish ID card, my plane ticket (which is a Catch-22 and a whole different problem...) and a portfolio of my work so I put together a PDF of my latest prototyping projects. I got the approval today, categorized as a freelance software designer. So I'm good for stretches of 180 days in-country for the next 5 years which is perfect for my needs. This is a big change from my old Thai O-A visa which required $24K stuck in a local bank account, a local health insurance policy, paying for a visa extension and re-entry permit every year, and a newly imposed tax on funds brought into Thailand. The whole process took 2 months but I'm sure they got a flood of applications. Mine was handled by the embassy in Madrid.

    Here's my summary of Chris' video. Let me know if I've got any bits wrong and I'll update accordingly:
    -
    DTV Visa - Destination Thailand Visa
    -
    * Validity: 5 years, multiple entry.
    * Stay per Entry: 180 days, extendable once by another 180 days (total of 360 days per entry).
    * Extension: The 180-day extension can be obtained an unlimited number of times over the 5-year visa validity (once per entry).
    * Eligible Categories:
    * Freelancers, Digital Nomads, Remote Workers (proof of employment from company outside Thailand, professional portfolio).
    * Individuals attending courses or activities promoted by the Thai government (acceptance letter required).
    * Legal dependents (spouses, children under 20) of DTV holders (proof of relationship required).
    * Financial Requirement: 500,000 THB in bank statements or other financial documents.
    * Application:
    * Must be applied for outside of Thailand.
    * Can be done online (e-visa) or at Thai embassies/consulates.
    * Cost: 10,000 THB.
    * Upon Re-Entry to Thailand: Only your DTV visa (in passport or e-visa email) is required. No additional fees.
    -
    Important Clarifications:
    * The 180-day stay period resets after each entry into Thailand.
    * You can enter and exit Thailand multiple times within the 5-year validity of the visa.

      @@TONYMORthat's how we understand it also. The term "rolling" is a good term to use.

      When you leave for say a few days or a week and you come back ....your calendar year resets?

    13:20-13:40 for an extension within the kingdom sounds like you need to show again your proof of portfolio. But if you leave before the 180 days and re-enter that you do not. So in theory as I see it, one could get DTV in cooking, language classes, etc for the 5 years with only one proof of portfolio (the original) as long as you bounced out before the 180 days was up and re-entered for another 180 days. If so, I see a lot of abuse. I too am one that thought originally that it was only for 180 days and then only one 180 extension in the 5 years as no one could explain it otherwise. Thank you for that clarification.

However it may be better than your home country tax thresholds so you'd have to check, however if you don't declare your taxable income in home country then you have something to think about and research etc. A course of some form may be best for you to use DTV, you'd have to check the options. You could do a 180d per year and then go to other countries or back home etc.
