really fallacious to assume that keeping the entire crew together for a year is a waste but getting rid of marner isn't. You don't just replace marner with a snap of a finger
DeBrusk is the definition of integrity. He's not gonna sign for a backstabber franchise, with media/fans trashing his value the second he makes one mistake. He's got self esteem. He'll love to keep destroying the Leafs. And all of this "we don't wanna lowball player-xy, but can we please lowball him, cause we're too stupid to manage our cap" all of that crap can go to die. If this franchise ever wants to be relevant ever again, they're gonna cut this BS hating and lowballing culture entirely. PR communication: talk to CJ and JDB only (they seem to have integrity, knowledge and don't hate on players), cut off all other T.O. media people and start working like a serious franchise.
Need to draft a #1 defenceman still. Unlikely until 2027. And Tavares made a ton of money in TO so far, so he may take #2 mil for 2 years. Colorado had their Matthews/Marner/Nylander forwards in MacKinnon/Landeskog/Rantanen yet still went out and drafted Makar and Byram, so.....
Leafs don’t play worth crap last season. Sure they might ralleye in the final minutes to win, but overall team play was miserable and tough to watch. Can Berube change this? I surely hope so, I always felt Keefe was the weak link with this group, guess we will find out this season. I foresee Marner returning, but possibly moving Tavares if they can persuade him to play elsewhere…
The core 4 have to be able to see the writing on the wall. If they want to win, it's unfortunately not going to be all together with the leafs. If Marner is asked to waive his no-trade, and if he has any competitive bone in his body, he should be willing to consider other teams. I know it will suck to leave your hometown but right now it's the best thing for everybody.
I’m curious if this changes your opinion on the Tavares deal. Was it a mistake at the time, or did it only become a mistake with COVID? I’m personally on the “mistake at the time” wagon, but I’m curious on your opinion.
It really wasn't a mistake, it just so happened that the flat cap because of covid made it harder to fit others around. Tavares has brought what he was paid for, produced as he should and add maturity and professionalism to a team that REALLY needed it with a team full of immature/young players. The price paid at the time was what was required to get a player of his ability and character as a free agent. ALL long term free agent contracts for players in their prime are going to look like they're overpriced in the last couple of years, that's the nature of the beast, but if the cap was now around 110 million (as it probably would have been if covid didn't rear it's ugly head) then 11 million would not seem nearly as bad.
Leafs need to re-sign Marner. There's nothing out there right now for the Leafs to correct the ship. Will need to wait until Tavares comes off the books.
Cowan- ELC Minten- ELC Knies- last year of ELC Webber- ELC Niemela- ELC. Let’s bring up the youth and sign some veterans and continue as is… I would love to trade Marner but we all know it’s not going to happen if shanny is still in top office

Wouldn't it be great to live in an ideal world where the core four acknowledge their playoff failures, took a voluntary pay cut - I mean, they've all said that they want to win a Stanley Cup - and allow the administration an actual chance at building a hockey team around them without having to beg and scrape for money? I know that these guys have a limited window to make millions of dollars, but it would be remarkable to see them really follow through for the fans and their dream of winning a cup.
Oilers fan here, I was a leaf fan also my second Canadian team, but when they got tavares and the entire summer of hearing marner B-tchin about leaving over seas, I have so much disrespect for the leafs…. When they get rid of marners and tavares I’ll think about being a fan of the leafs (second team)
Tavares contract is buyout proof lol. It's why it's structured the way it is. Theoretically if JT made the same salary as his average cap hit it would cost the leafs 2/3 of his contract, over double the length remaining. 2/3 of the 11 mil left is about 7.5 or 8 mil. That 8 mil would get paid out over double what's left so 4 mil per season would be the cap hit IF his actual salary was the same as his AAV. What screws things up is what he is making in actual salary this year is only like 8 million not 11. 910 k base salary 7 million signing bonus. Whenever a player makes less than what his AAV is the cap hit to buy him out goes up. Basically if JT was bought out it would cost like 10.4 million this year and 300 k next season when he wouldn't even be on contract anymore. The leafs would only open up about 700 k if he was bought out and get penalized the season after. It does work the opposite for a player making more than his AAV cap. TJ Brodie's last season his actual salary was 7.5 million and his AAV was 5 mil... If Brodie was bought out last year he would have cost 0 as a cap hit.... Although this year there would have been a penalty
If the Leafs are forced to keep the core 4, then this year will be a repeat of the last few years. I like Joseph, and a couple of unfortunate injuries doesn't make him injury prone. I felt Nylander should have been traded a couple of years ago because of his inability to fight in the corner. One needs to go to have any chance to acquire better defense.
Early in the video, Steve: The leafs are spending 53% of their cap on 4 guys. Later in the video, Steve: I don't know if the leafs are in gonna be in that wheel house in terms of spending ability. Bro, they are trying to get into that wheel house with square wheels. I'd be surprised if they can afford gum on their salary cap
No idea how the Kings didn't trade Roy at the deadline. That was a first round pick, and they weren't going anywhere. Not sure if the Maple Leafs get him, but he will be great there.
No more guys over the age of 35 please. It’s a young men’s game. The Leafs need to get younger and faster, guys that don’t have a big name, but can forecheck and are willing to work their butts off. I’d rather give the spots to some of the Marlies. You know they’ll be motivated to try and stay on the team. We need more Bobby McMann stories.
it's not just a core four problem, if you look at the top 5 cap hits on the leafs roster, that's 62% of the cap. boston is 44% for next season, florida is 48.6% (florida's doesn't include reinhart and instead forsling, but even if let's say they re-sign reinhart and he takes up 10% of the cap it'd still be only around 52% for their top 5. as a bruins fan aswell, willy is a good player. but he's taking up 13.1% of the cap, pastrnak takes up 12.8, and he is the second highest on your team.
What about are old Pal Jack Campbel I would think that the Oilers would like to move him and might retain a lot. He played well for the Leaf's and he is good in backup situations.
The leafs need big steps from Robertson and Liljegren (if they keep him) Knies is a good player but need him to be more active offensively. Also need a goalie obviously but shouldn’t overpay for a saros at this point. Could be one of the teams kicking tires on Gibson although probably not too hard due to cap hit. Should be seriously pitching a pesce, skjei or montour in free agency but again that’s a big cap hit to take on with the core 4 making so much.
I think that the real issue with the core is just that in total they are overpaid. They are all sitting within 12 most highest paid players in the league. Are they all top 12 best players within the league, don't think so. Compare that to four players like Barkov, Rantanen, Makar and Draisaitl, who would all be cheaper than any member of core 4. Leafs really needed more cap friendly deals.
Let's not forget about the Tampa Bay players getting old. I can see them starting a rebuild soon and an interesting target in my mind is Victor Hedman. I wonder what it would take to get him.

I think if not Montour the leafs should go after Alex carrier or Sean Walker. Walker gets shots through very well and plays a sound defensive game. Carrier is a really good defensive player, not a ton of points but I think he’d play very well with rielly.
Bro as a lifelong Panthers fan it's so nuts being mentioned so much crazy shit hahaha hang in there get some depth alot of talent in Toronto
I think Bert would like to come back at probably the same cap hit but longer term this time like maybe 4yrs. Domi would come back at $4-4.5mil for around 4yrs as well. U can’t expect ppl to take random heavy discounts and also expect them to sign these short term deals…
Lol. Appreciate the effort for this video, but in the end it doesn’t matter. These guys will never amount to much.
Justin Holl is the only rookie defenceman in League history to score in their debut game and then the following game.
Don’t need a back up goalie, get sarros
The only analysis I am interested in watching...
I hate when everyone says but the cap is going up cause every other team also now has cap space to work with and doesnt help
I am less mad about running it back then the potential of shitty contracts being signed that cannot be undone after Shanahan gets fired for doing them.
After being a leafs fan since 1998, fk the leafs and the organization, its a popularity contest at this point, the owners are simply about making money and its never going to change, the leafs will never win the cup. Im done.
Join the habs, our future is getting bright while darkness looms over the Leafs 😊
@@TheBalls2thewallsAll the leafs have to do is suck for a decade and then be the Habs. Carey Price was the only reason they won any games during their finals run during a weird covid season. Other than that when was the last time they had a decent team?
I'd rather see Montour and especially Roy over Tanev becauce of their ages. but Montour could only be fit in if Leafs manage to trade marner with return that doesn't bring much of salary and are either young players or/and high draft picks.
signing tanev seems like it'd work out about as well as muzzin.
Atleast they don't need to empty the cupboards and trade away a 1st to get him.
Muzzin was great here
ya...they won so many titles with him before he was hurt every season.
@@Krokodilius Yeah because players aren’t good acquisitions unless they win the cup and stay perfectly healthy after 31
Ekholm is a bum, even more so if he gets hurt and falls off as a result
You should have combined those two charts with the numbers side by side with the percentages for each player. It would be way easier for everyone to follow along.
Not saying they should do this, but what would the core 4 cap % look like like in 2 years if Marner signs for 11.5M and JT signs for like 5M, and let’s say cap goes up another 4.5M?
Do a vid on what the team would look like if we didn’t make all the stupid trades that screwed us. Just do the brutal ones. Would be interesting what our team would look like with Seguin, Kadri, marchment, Moore) etc but would be even more interesting to know which players and subsequent moves would have never happened if you cancelled the trade in the first place.
The MATH IS ACCURATE!!! 😢😢😢 THIS BLOWS MY MIND! MORE $$$ and less to use on other/new players!
53.01% of the cap going to the "core 4". This is precisely why Marner must be traded.
Steve we are so screwed man. The FA crop stinks. I'm finding it harder and harder to imagine a Marner trade will happen and shake up this core.
I feel like it's going to be another year of running it back to my seasonal playoff depression.
"If they donthis again, they ain't gonna be very good."
Lol That is simply incorrect. Lots of things can happen
Hakanpaa is 6’5 not 6’7
really fallacious to assume that keeping the entire crew together for a year is a waste but getting rid of marner isn't. You don't just replace marner with a snap of a finger
DeBrusk is the definition of integrity. He's not gonna sign for a backstabber franchise, with media/fans trashing his value the second he makes one mistake. He's got self esteem. He'll love to keep destroying the Leafs.
And all of this
"we don't wanna lowball player-xy, but can we please lowball him, cause we're too stupid to manage our cap"
all of that crap can go to die.
"Relevant " ? That's hilarious.
The salary cap and management overpaying has screwed this team
Welcome to the Steve dangle pod- wait a sec oh boy
I wish we had a Steve Dangle Buffalo Sabres edition
Tanev, Talbot, Perron, Lubushkin. No Bert. Maybe Max.
Run it back!
Run it back!
Run it back!
Looks like domi Bertuzzi may go to free agency
Steve, if you're going to run us through a bunch of numbers, it would be smart to have Producer Drew put them on the screen as you say them. 🙂
As a Kings fan, Matt Roy is getting 5-6 million for sure. The points don't do him justice. He was excellent this year.
Cowan- ELC
Minten- ELC
Knies- last year of ELC
Webber- ELC
Niemela- ELC.
Let’s bring up the youth and sign some veterans and continue as is… I would love to trade Marner but we all know it’s not going to happen if shanny is still in top office
If I wasn’t depressed about the Bud’s future before watching this upload,I sure am now.Thanks Steve,you’re a pal.😂
All joking aside,I subscribed and yes I would like David Peron, but do we have the clout to swing a deal?
Brossoit has said he won’t accept any offer that isn’t a starting position, the leafs won’t give him that.
What's happening to CapFriendly?
They were bought by the Washington Capitals
Gone. Purchased by Washington Capitals for their exclusive use.
@@johnsummerhill8323 Oh that was an actual thing!? I thought that was just a joke about the PLD trade! LMAO!
What would buying Tavares out cost to leafs?
The other risk - how many players do we lose to the new professional 3 on 3 league ?
Apparently their salary cap is pretty BIG.
You can have a core 4, but it should be a goalie and 1 or 2 centers, and a Dman, if not two centers, then 2 dmen.
These salaries for 4 guys is insane.
Remember no rushin
sign Ethan Bear and is a right hand shot
it's not just a core four problem, if you look at the top 5 cap hits on the leafs roster, that's 62% of the cap. boston is 44% for next season, florida is 48.6% (florida's doesn't include reinhart and instead forsling, but even if let's say they re-sign reinhart and he takes up 10% of the cap it'd still be only around 52% for their top 5.
as a bruins fan aswell, willy is a good player. but he's taking up 13.1% of the cap, pastrnak takes up 12.8, and he is the second highest on your team.
Domi at 4×3.5 would be great.
nobody is signing domi oh except the leafs will overpay for failure
If Faber wasn't the future captain and heart and soul of Minnesota, i would almost package him.
If leaf’s don’t get rid of Marner. This year is going to be a a lot of cap pain
What about are old Pal Jack Campbel I would think that the Oilers would like to move him and might retain a lot. He played well for the Leaf's and he is good in backup situations.
Agreed, now that the Oilers are buying him out, Leafs should try to bring him back at league min.
The curse of DUBAS remains to haunt the team; too much money for four players.
Why is cap friendly going away?
Let's not forget about the Tampa Bay players getting old. I can see them starting a rebuild soon and an interesting target in my mind is Victor Hedman. I wonder what it would take to get him.
If they resign Marner, get ready to not make a cup run for another 4+ years.
