I met Berube when he came to Washington back in the early 90s. He stopped in my store with his wife and we made small talk. After a bit I asked him what he thought about the league's (empty) threat to eliminate fighting and - given his style of play - what he would change if they did. Without missing a beat, his wife chimes up, "First, he's going to have to learn to skate." The look on his face was priceless.
That’s a good wife.
🤣🤣🤣 what an awesome story bud!
Great story ... Mrs Berube sounds like a real firecracker !!! :)
A guy who marries a woman with a sense of humor is alright in my book.
I'm pretty sure Berube's resume for this job was just a cocktail napkin with the words "I Made Brad Marchand Cry in the Stanley Cup Finals"
Sounds good enough for me!
And they wrote hired on it 😂😂😂
I can put it this way. Berube being fired was the first time that I can remember that a STL fan base absolutely and vocally disagreed with a coaches firing. Kyrou made some offhand comment the game after the firing and got booed every time he touched the puck the next game. As a Blues fan I would happily still have Berube as our coach. I think the Leafs got a good one. I hope they let him actually coach in the way he wants to.
Fun fact: Just like Jordan Binnington is from the Greater Toronto Area, Joseph Woll is from the Greater St. Louis area. So who knows what could happen?
Blues fan here -- Excited for you guys. Curious to see who they get for goaltending duties. Woll is a great kid, but doesn't seem durable enough.
Berube will forever be my favorite Blues Coach. Toronto fans are really gonna love him. Quick story, my family owns a small deli in stl and this past December he came down before a blues game and got a sandwich and just to say hello. Coincidentally later that night he was fired. He is definitely missed in stl.
Coaching is brutal in the nhl
Yep. He will need some of the "goal Scorers" gone.
@@ginor8416no kidding. As a former flames fan I find it hilarious that Darryl Sutter took the team to the second round of the play offs and won the Jack Adams with the fans throwing out slogans like “In Sutter we trust”.
The very next year, everyone hates him, he’s terrible and he gets fired. Like in the span of less than 12 months you can go from winning the best coach award to fired. It’s insanity
What about Prof Caron?
The Craig Berube saga begins here!
As a Blues fan, we love Chief and I can now hope he takes you where he took us!
Craig Berube played only 40 games for the Leafs! He was involved in two separate trades !
I liked him as a Leaf and like most Leaf trades I was disappointed when he left the team.
That may be true, but when he left, we got DOUG GILMOUR!!!
@craigbrioux Yes that's true and won that trade hands down!
Regardless of hiring Berube, if his hands are tied from Shanahan with disciplining the core, a coaching change wont matter. I pray Berube has free reign
but he would have tre backing him up
I'd watch that scrap
I think it was actually Dubas who didn't like being too hard on the players. Keefe had a nasty habit of criticizing players and then walking it back the next day or two. When Dubas left, he wasn't nearly as back and forth. If Berube can be himself in this position, I think it will greatly benefit the Leafs.
@@Sir_Godz lololololol
@@ZoltanvamosOfficial Dubas wanted Marner out and wasn't allowed to deal with him how he wanted. That's what people refer to.
This is the coach this team has needed badly. Not strict, not relaxed but someone who gets the team motivated to win a game. That speech in that Cup Final Game 7 was the prime example of what kind of man he is. THIS IS IT.
Bahahaha PLAN THE PARADE 😂😂
@@adamCarter20 I aint no Leafs fan but this is a really good fuckin move for them. They can definitley make some noise with him as their coach
@@xViperGTR 😆😆😊 sure
@@adamCarter20 he did it with St Louis and changed the narrative that Mike Yeo put on them.

I'm from Owen Sound Ontario and I still have fond memories of Binnington playing for the Owen Sound Attack when they won the OHL Championship in 2011. I knew he would be a good goalie in the league and I was so happy when he won the cup in 2019. I forgot Berube came in the same time as Binner in the cup run season
2:55 Craig Berube coaching the blues in 1920 😂
Steve's like Michael Corleone. Just when he thinks he's out, they pull him back in.
As Silvio Dante likes to say over a hundred times

Because you’re gay? That’s what I’ve heard.
I'm sorry, Mikey.

Because you’re a Leaf fan. Smart woman.
Craig Berube: An Era STARTED
Let's hope
A few years later, An Era WASTED 😂😂
Ok.
Berube isn't afraid to call out his star players and tell them they're not playing well publicly. Play the right way and you'll earn your ice, don't and you'll be scratched or benched. Those who wanna (pardon my language) fuckin be here, will be; those that don't, there's the door and don't let it hit your ass on the way out. To quote Pelley, "We're not here to sell jerseys, we're here to win."
Berube will get chewed up and spit out by the toxic Leafs fans and media. He's a great coach, but really got his feelings hurt by his release and comments made after. Once the Toronto crowd starts their yapping he'll be gone.
Players will turn on him in six months especially Matthews and Nylander lol
@@OotoriKyouya Yes, it was the same issue with all the young "stars" the Blues chose over their champions that Berube forged.
True, Berube benched some big name players for a game or two as wake up calls, I wanna say he even benched Tarasenko for a game once? But don't quote me on that, unless I'm right...
If he's willing to actually criticize nonperformance, he'll get canned for creating a "toxic work environment" like Babcock (the Leaf's last "Coach Saviour"). The problem is the Leafs ARE here to sell jerseys and have been for 57 years. People who want to win go to other organizations to do it because they have to, full stop. Phil Kessel once got a lot of criticism for visiting Toronto and bringing the Cup with him; in his defense, he supposedly said "how else could it get here?".
Country Club just got interesting. Welcome to Toronto Berube, can't wait to see what you're going to do.
Hope Berube KO Matthews and the other divas when they don’t listen
You mean welcome back Berube!
They should play the Welcome Back Kotter theme at his first game
@@ginor8416 That would be Magnificent!!
Steve got the "YOU LOST TO A ZAMBONI DRIVER" haircut
As a Blues fan one thing that is underrated about Berube was his lineup decisions. Everytime he changed the lines up it worked, everytime he activated a healthy scratch it worked. I guess the only question with that is do the Leafs have enough depth to do that constantly?
Wow didn't see this coming

If Shanny forgets his role is to sell seats, beer, and hot dogs. Berube can remind him that they dropped the gloves as players, and Craig beat the brakes off of Shanny.

Thanks for that-I liked Berube before watching that, now I’m for putting him up on a pedestal.👍✌️
I needed that in the worst way lol shanny looked like Marner when Marchant went after him in the playoffs
What’s up Steve. Keep the content coming!
As a Blues fan, I don’t think this is the best move for Toronto. Part of why Berube and the Blues clicked so well in ‘19 and ‘20 is because Berube is best with a big, defensive, grinding type team, which the Blues absolutely were in those years. In ‘22-‘23, the Blues became less of that, and they had less success with Berube because of it. I think Berube is a good coach, I’ll always be grateful for what he accomplished for St. Louis, but I think he’s a coach that does best with a specific type of team, and I don’t think the Leafs are that type.
But, I am just a fan on the couch so I could be very wrong and the Leafs will win the Cup next year. Who knows?
Leafs won’t win the Cup ever, they are too soft. They don’t have the goaltending and tough characters that the half-breed Berube had in St. Loony. Berube is out after two years of one and done, bank on it.
The Modern 1-2-2 trap game the Berube had the Blues master in 2019 isn’t something that all teams are built for including the Blues who used it to devastating effect when they got a lead in a game 2019 and 2020. Although as soon as they weren’t a elite defensive team in 2021 the modern 1-2-2 trap that they had run the previous two years was all but useless which is why I believe the hiring of Berube will have some effect on the Leafs, but it will not be some X-factor that wins them a cup like like Leaf fans seem to think. The X-factor to all of the Leaf problems in their poor roster construction and until those issues are rectified the Leafs will continue to struggle in the playoffs with or without Berube.
How can you forget that Craig Berube was a Leaf? He formed part of the toughest, greatest, most hard-working, infamous line in Leaf‘s history - The Fault Line. Bonus points for anyone who still remembers who else made up the line without looking it up.
I have to say, the prospect of Berube with the addition of Savard as assistant coach, coupled with the rumblings of Marner getting traded for Saros (I think a straight up Marner for Saros, 1 for 1 trade isn't the "best" deal the Leafs can muster, but getting a solid goalie is assuring), makes me incredibly optimistic and hopeful for this franchise. We all have known for a while that the Leafs need a change, and this certainly facilitates that need! What an off-season this could be! Thx for the upload :D :D
Ok I was a high school basketball ref. I never believed in the concept that a foul is different in the regular season versus the playoffs. A penalty is a penalty regardless of what game is being refed. Right ?
Coach makes a goalie, goalie makes a coach...........remember that.
A decent goal with a good defense can make a team !
A solid goaltender with a great defense can make any coach look good !
Dang, too bad we aren’t a team maybe looking at trading a 10 million dollar forward for a top tier goalie getting some defencemen…. Oh wait!

So awesome we got him, welcome to Toronto Chief, I know your happy to be here. 🎉
So much for the soft, gentle, delicate, approach to directing Matthews to superstardom. It's always nice to get a new alarm clock at certain points in a career. I don't know if Berube will be able to handle the glass menagerie that is... the Toronto Maple Leafs. There will be a wake-up call. There better be a big box of tissues in the locker room so the Leafs can get it out of their systems fast. Keep the tears in the Locker room and the blood on the ice.
As a Red Wings fans I had hoped for the slim chance that Yzerman would can LaLonde and hire Berube. I didn't expect that at all, it was a dream. Congratulations to Toronto though. Expect some drastic changes in playing style. Players will be expected to "Man up", which will be a good thing. The Maple Leafs will be forever different in their playing style. The future is bright for you. Good Luck and enjoy!
I Love SDPN and love the Steve Dangle podcast. I'm an English hockey fan and Leafs fan in particular. What would it say about the Leafs if they went into the next season with Shanahan still in his job?
Based on the Leafs track record of beating the same dead horse into the ground for a decade, I would say it would say it would be expected for the Leafs to continue with what they are doing with the expectation that they will win a Cup doing it. It is one of my favorite annual comedy shows each spring and each show is more entertaining than the last.
Get some one in too fix the power play. Need this asap.
Die hard STL Blues fan. I have grown to like leafs and watch their games. because of you. I don’t need all this heartache. I blame you Steve.
As good of a higher as it may be, I think it doesn’t matter who’s behind the bench if you don’t make some changes to that roster, particularly Tavares and Marner need to go to free up some cap Space to reconstruct the roster and get it more playoff ready.
I’ve talked in some sdp comments before about how Berube wasn’t a fit for the Blues. But for all the reasons he wasn’t, they make him the perfect coach for the Leafs. So excited!
Berube was the perfect fit for the 2019 and 2020 Blues team that was stacked defensively and could perfectly run the modified 1-2-2 trap game in which every lead was a whether in the first or third period was almost a guaranteed win. The 2021-present Blues roster are more like the Leafs current roster which is more of a offensive team in which Berube is not a good fit. That is why I don’t see Berube’s impact going further than motivating players as the Leafs are not an absolutely stacked defensive team like the Blues were in 2019-2020 and as a result Berube’s preferred 1-2-2 modified trap system won’t be a good fit for the Leafs roster.
The new Leafs winning goal sing has to be Gloria now
nah, that belongs to the blues
0:30 You talk about is so casually from that Leaf POV. As a Flames fan, Craig Berube was part of the WORST TRADE IN HOCKEY HISTORY when Berube, The Human Pylon, a literal lemon, and two other guys were offloaded on Calgary for Killer, Macoun, Natty, Wammers and that Manderville guy. I can't really blame Berube for the trade that he 100% didn't orchestrate and was only a pawn in, can I? Oh wait, sure I can! Congrat Coach BOO-rube!
The Flames didn't want to pay Gilmour and they also didn't want him playing in the 1991 Canada Cup. That's why he was traded. Berube definitely helped protect guys like Theo Fleury
Let's not forget his no comment quote when Kadri was receiving tons of racist comments and death threats on social media
@DXAdamJensen such a dumb thing to throw a fit about. "Random people on the internet said mean things to Kadri!"
"*GASP!"
@@OotoriKyouyaBerube probably commented nothing about those social media post’s because Kadri In consecutive playoffs had injured the Blues best player in each series in Faulk(intentional) and Binnington(questionable) and he could have probably cared less that Kadri was basking in the being the victim to deflect from his actions in the playoffs that killed the Blues chances of advancing the year Binnington was hurt, intentional or not.
So countdown to the 'Fire Berube' chant by Leaf fans within the next 3 years. Same old same old where they hire a coach, go on about him then want him canned. Have fun with that as only a few coaches have won a Cup with one team then did it with another. Ain't gonna happen in TO
Berube was an amazing coach for our team and fan base in St. Louis. The Leafs will love playing for him and he’ll get full effort from everyone. Hopefully he can take you to the promised land that us Blues fans finally reached.
I am so whelmed by this news.
I like this hiring. He was my top pick next to Brind'Amor, but with Brind'Amor's new contract with Carolina stalled but basically done, that wasn't likely. Having said that, and maybe I'm alone in this, but I kinda wanted to see Doug Gilmour...he did win a cup as a player, and had some of his best seasons as a player as a Leaf...plus unfinished business (and never got a chance to try and correct this thanks to Dave Lowry). Sure he'd be a rookie head coach, but with a track record of winning a cup with Calgary and then getting as close to winning a cup with the Leafs as anyone else since '67, and IMHO, if not for Kerry Fraser, would have done so.
What in the world is that haircut, Steve 😭😂

Steve, as a NJ Devils' fan, I'm so jealous that the Leafs now have Craig Berube! The Leafs will be a force to be reckoned with next season!!!
I love Barbeque...
That's what we are talking about right???
I dunno...if Barbeque won a Stanley Cup with the Blues for the first time, after the team was the WORST in the league...then yes, we definitely ARE talking about Barbeque.
Incidentally, in the story Treasure Island, Barbeque was the nickname that a crew of pirates used for their VERY crafty, very gutsy, very duplicitous leader Long John Silver. So pretty cool nickname from that perspective.
Then again, "Barbeque" also betrayed and killed his pirate crew to join the "good" side before hightailing it with a stolen share of the treasure the "good" guys retrieved and took back with them. So make of that what you will.
Savard ran the power play this year for the Flames. It was horrible. He kept sticking with the same setup, guys, and refused to change either the setup or players until the Flames were basically eliminated. Then he decided to put the kids on the PP and change the way they set up and things started getting better. Good news is he only takes 60 games to make adjustments to something that isn’t working.
Also the year before Savard arrived the Flames had a middle of the pack power play with largely the same personnel.
Bro why do u have the 2015 combover still?
Dude got the skin cut, Steve going on twelve lol
“And Berube…is definitely that.” So true lol
Steve, you are perpetuating a myth, or at the least an incomplete story. You are not telling the whole truth. The St Louis Blues are said to have been in last place on January 2, 2019 only because they had the fewest points. They had also played the fewest games. Percentage-wise they were in 25th place out of 31 teams. Six teams had poorer records on that date.
New haircut looks great Steve!
Canucks in 6?
Rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic. Nothing changes until the roster does. These “stars” are butter soft, that stays the same.
Interesting that former Boston Bruin Marc Savard is joining the staff. Like Berube Savard has a cup too. I really liked him as a player. Sad that concussions ended his career young at 34.
I'm stoked to see him get these players in the winning mood and be more then a season team and we're a playoff team we eat nails for b fast
Probably the 2nd least surprising news that will happen with the leafs this offseason. (The first being the Keefe firing)

If the Core 4 stays expect the same result with Berube - a 100+ point regular season, Matthews chasing 70 goals. Nylander getting close to 50 goals and Marner finally getting over the 100 point mark.
Same playoff results as well.
Having Mitch Marner on the team is the equivalent of a hockey stick, that can skate and give up the puck all on its own. If you can get him to waive his nmc then send'em.
Finally! Someone who inspires toughness! Go Leafs go! The Leafs are on their way past Stanley Cup base camp, up the mountain.
Steve do u know the teams ullmark wont go to?
I guess we will see, but I can't help but think that Berube is highly overrated. No one can dispute his cup win, but aside from that, his coaching record has not been impressive. But at least he'll likely hold his players accountable.
Which leafs coach (dead or alive) would you want back behind the bench?
Pat Quinn will always be my favorite, because I started watching hockey at that time
@@Isabella-hd1gt Same. It's hard to believe that rounds 2 and 3 of the playoffs were common in the Pat Quinn era. How times have changed.
@@JamesVanderVeen Times have indeed changed. I think being both the GM and head coach helped a lot. He could build and coach the team the way he wanted.
Nothing wrong hiring Berube, but this is just another chapter in the Leaf fan blame game. At what point will Leaf fandom finally say "We were wrong. Wrong about the quality of our players. Wrong about what matters on a hockey team. Wrong about the qualities of a winner. We overvalued what we had and flip polarity on personnel on a whim. We do not understand how good hockey works."
You should have Brendan Shanahan’s job asking all of those questions as those are the correct questions to ask when you keep beating the same dead horse and failing every single time. The Big 4 NBA style roster that the Leafs currently have limits the amount of talent that the Leafs can have in any given year which puts them at a huge disadvantage against other elite team that are not limited by the same extreme cap restraints that the Leafs continue to impose on themselves by not shedding a couple of their big contracts. Berube will not solve the issue which I stated above even if some Leaf fan believe he will. What he will do is motivate players, but motivation will only take a team so far.
This won't make a difference. He will not get 46 wins. Mark my words. He won't set or break the wins record. He won't change the story in the playoffs. When you have 1 top 4 D you won't go far. Lets remember where the gm is from. Treliving was in Arizona lol. He signed a #1 goalie then ran the talent out of town in Calgary. Traded a franchise player in tkachuk for lol well you know. No Johnny hockey. The front office had 22 mil.this past offseason. Knowing they have 1 top 4 D. Knowing they never replaced muzzin, signed klingberg, lost to season ending injury. The front office job is, to provide the tools to win. You do not win when you provide your coach and team a bunch if 3rd pairing D and for good measure add some 7th dmen. Now we expect.a cup coach Keefe.
Best of luck to Chief in Toronto. He’s awesome!
So this can go three ways: 1 - welcome to Babcock 2.0. 2- oh, it turns out it wasn't the coaching. 3 - Auston just forechecked a guy... AGAIN! RIGHT INTO THE BOARDS! THERE'S BLOOD ON THE ICE! AUSTON IS LAUGHING! LAUGHING AT THE BLOOD!
What's Berube going to do. Score? stop pucks? You could hire anyone......ANYONE. You still have no show Marner and useless JT. Average goaltending and terrible D. You need new players and that's what you need. If you roll it back it'll be another first-round loss regardless of who the coach is the president is and the GM is. P L A Y E R S...........PLAYERS
Part of the problems Berube faced, Armstrong quickly dismantled the cup team. All the talent left and we were stuck with long contracts to mediocre players.

So other than winning the Stanley Cup, one playoff series win. Hmmm
A month into the season Berube will realize just how hard of a job he has taken on. Mentally he is a team of snowflakes that he has to rely on to get the job done. The first time he has to lay into them and they fold where does he go. The core 4 mentally are week and have now a long track record of cracking under pressure. Granted he probably won't have them all, maybe only Matthews and Nylander but to drop the 160 or so points of production on the regular season moving the other 2 out and he will have to crack down why earlier then if all 4 were still there.
Only four coaches have won the Stanley Cup with two or more clubs in the NHL era. Scott Bowman did it with three. Dick Irvin did it with two over seventy years ago. Tommy Gorman and Lester Patrick did it about eighty years ago. Think about those analytics.
You're going to like Berube and his coaching style. He's going to hold players accountable, and you may see that he gets his way with the refs at times. He's a force out there. Gonna be great for clips too!
3:04 A .662 save percentage?
It is so simple. The Leafs play on the perimeter in the playoffs. Goals in most cases are scored within 8 feet of the net in the playoffs with often 2 forwards in front of the net. Berube will change the cukture long overdue.
I love all the old school trades haha it was always like 5-6 players for another 5-6 players...good times
3/4 of the core of that team disappear when playoffs begins and they replaced the coach. Good luck.
Well said. I'm happy you mention Binnington. In 2019, he could have won the Conn Smythe for dragging STL into the playoffs (if there were such a thing). O'Reilly took the CS, but Binnington was more valuable. And yes, in 2022, Binnington was unbeatable, until Kadri knocked him out (because the NHL still doesn't protect goalies, per the endless goalie injuries and tandems). So you are asking the right question. Who is the Leafs Conn Smythe calibre goalie? Had he already existed on either TOR or EDM, #34 and #97 might already have Cups, or Finals. I know everyone likes to say both teams are far from a Cup. But so were the Habs in 1993 and 2021. But they had built those teams from the goalie out. If goalies always make the next save, invisible Marners or Matthews do score in OT. If goalies don't, there is no OT.
Without a stud D-man a Cup is unlikely. Everything you said is on mark.
The thing is, if we were asking this about the Blues in the 2018 offseason, we’d have the same answer. Binner didn’t get called up until after the season started.
Coaching wasn't the problem In toronto. The fact that we make the playoffs seems to skip ppls minds like we are entitled to a cup. Ownership needs to want a cup not just make money like a business for a team to win a cup. Leafs make enough money to just be happy with a first round loss every year. If that wasn't the case Shanahan would have been gone b4 doubts.
This had to be the worst kept secret for the past 3-4 months. Prediction : Berube has the same luck as Keefe, good in the regular season, crappy in the playoffs. Berube lasts at most, two years, bank on it.
Your prediction is solid except for the two years bit. Leafs gave Keefe 5 years. Berube will get at the very least 3
None of this matters if you keep the core group

Craig Berube took a team with the second longest Stanley Cup drought and brought them their first Stanley Cup. Maybe he can end the drought for Toronto!
I'm ecstatic about this. Obviously just having him doesn't automatically guarantee results, but I really feel a huge reason why the players aren't achieving their potential is they're just not being pushed hard enough. Berube will be giving these guys a major kick in the ass.
No more buying jerseys or buying home tickets until:
- Removal of Marner and Tavares
- Removal of Sheldon Keefe + staff
- creation of a leafs supporters club where members hold a minority stake in MLSE
- Make available whole sections of scotiabank arena where tickets go for 50-150 dollars for a seat. This is based the on common prices i see for the upper bowl of a decent size music concert. Charge the lower bowl whatever you want still.
- create standing areas that allow for casual viewing and an "ultra" atmosphere like in soccer... where someone isnt "shushed" for singing and dancing
- sell jerseys for less than 80 CAD.
Should have signed Queeneville
