My Reasons for BUYING This Ferrari!

- The new Ferrari Roma Spider is on order, but why!? Join me in Rome, Italy for a first drive in the new convertible that is joining the Shmeemobiles later this year. We'll run through the car, see what it's like (including a little rant), and discuss where it sits in my garage and why I've bought it!
The Roma launched a few years ago, but following the end of production of the Portofino, we now have the Roma Spider, bringing the 620hp 3.9l TT V8 to an open driving experience. A few months ago I announced that a new Roma Spider is going to be joining the Shmeemobiles in future as I placed an order a while ago for another member of my Ferrari collection.
However, there have been a lot of questions about why I would buy this car. Well, it's time to talk about all of the reasons and where it sits in the garage, what it will be used for, and why would I choose to buy one of these. There's the cliché "oh you had to buy it to get x, y or z" and it's time to discuss more about that and the real reasons it fits in the garage.
To find out what the Roma Spider is actually like to drive, I have joined HROwen Ferrari London at the customer event in Fiuggi, outside of Rome, where Ferrari have kindly made it possible for me to bring you along for part of the experience.

@@Shmee150I love the look of the Roma, its the perfect Ferrari for touring... but the 1 thing that annoys me about it is the color matched front grille - it kind of makes it look like an EV. Is there a piano black or carbon grille option?
Mark Mcann detailed this process perfectly. Want an SF90 XX then you going to need to buy x amount of our high volume dross and retain your SF90.
Lol I was about to say this its the only reason he's got all those Ferraris you can see he's lying to himself about enjoying it 💀😭
Regular SF90s are dropping drastically in price also.
I don’t disagree that he is roped in to play the Ferrari game. But it’s not like hasn’t done it before. He hasn’t bought a McLaren since the Senna (and he’s since sold that) and no news on a new AMG since the AMG GT BS (and he’s sold the C63, G63, AMG GT Pro, and AMG GT Roadster since).
That being said, he loves the brand, he’s not been shy about it. If they force him to get a line up so he can get the allocation he wants, he’s got choices. And it’s not like the cars he’s bought he isn’t enjoying. He’s driving them like they are meant to be driven. And I do see a future where the SF90XX, the Purosangue, and 296 GTS are in the collection for the long haul.

Mclaren, and Aston Martin too, dont really play that game. And nor does Lamborghini.
You could say Mclaren hasnt come out with a spectacular car since the Senna. And you are right. People, especially american kids, think this "game" is some sort of scam. But with a few cars built, everybody cant get one. Its really simple. But its not like they are selling people trash "filler-cars" As Shmee says, the entry level models are also fully valid Ferraris.
So what's the problem in that? His money, he says he like their cars, that's why he has bought them and Ferrari has now presented him with a nice opportunity of owning one of their special and limited production car! It's the same with every other supercar brand but always Ferrari will be pinpointed for this particular policy by the internet!
Cars I can only dream of, but what I like is your enthusiasm for all that you do.
You bought an awful lot of new Ferraris very closely together Tim. Nothing wrong with that, it’s your money but it would appear you were ‘required to buy a few’ for your new XX allocation. That’s the perception anyway. Not criticising, just pointing it out.

At this point, every supercar brand has this business practice for allocating special cars but somehow purchasing a number of Ferrari cars seem to catch the eye of everyone.

It's odd, but it isn't new; I've seen the same for how much I like AMG GTs, the Focus RS trio I've owned, even the FF and 2x Lusso. People assume you don't ever do something because you want to. It's a very strange mentality and I'd love to know what causes it.

You love Ferraris and you see to love our country too (Italy) so to quote our most famous poet (Dante) and his Divine Comedy I would tell you : “Non ti curar di loro ma guarda e passa” . Literally “don’t mind about these people, but just have a Quick Look at them and move on” . Don’t waste your time and energies with negative people .
@@Shmee150 Tim, I hope you won’t get this to be a hateful comment because it’s aimed at showing you the mentality we, watchers, usually have.
People watch more than one channel so just listening blindly to a single guy’s reasoning isn’t going to cut it for a regular person. For example one may watch yourself, JWW, Seen Through Glass, Stradman and DDR. So we have 6 channels, 6 opinions on the same topic so at the end of the day the watcher will try to come to a conclusion based on those opinions which some might coincide and some might be contradictory. Some of the watchers may have the benefit of their own personal experience on top of what I just said.
For instance your spat with the DDE logos on your gumball cars. In my opinion you were in the wrong because you look at them as competitors but they argued they were sponsors of the rally and instead of you addressing stuff or a direct apology chose to sweep things under the rug.
However let’s go back to the Roma. I’m not saying you dislike the car, it’s a Ferrari and every unit is special in it’s own way, but you own another convertible prancing horse although one is front engine, the other one is a mid engine hibrid, but I’m sure that people here have a point because you’re a smart business person and having 2 relatively entry level cars from the same manufacturer can be perceived as an overkill.
At the end of the day it’s your own business how you spend your money but sometimes it’s best not to offer any explanation just for the sake of it, leave it alone and move on because you’ll enjoy every minute of owning that car…getting hit by the depreciation is a different story though.
And, while I’m here commenting, you’re a very knowledgeable person and it’s unbelievable how many things you know about cars and about the community. The access you have to cars and people is amazing. You’re a likable, positive, person but sometimes the repetitive content gets annoying and I’d suggest to choose quality over quantity when it comes to uploads.
Some stuff are utterly boring as opposed to your roadtrips, the track experiences and the series you did with the road to Zenvo.
Again, not a dig, it’s a personal opinion with no bias.

@@Shmee150 I think it is plain jealousy...this cars are more beautiful then the hypercars, because it is all about the driving. Hypercars are for investors who don't like cars only the bankaccount. That are my thoughts...I like this video's the Rostand the trips around Europe .
It's because some of us have been watching the Shmee150 channel since back in 2011 blah blah blah.. Change is good and a necessary element of all things in life. But the channel has changed enormously in the last year or so. I myself am one of the people extremely dissatisfied with the content and subject matter Tim is putting out. However I also agree he doesn't need or deserve the onslaught of Rage Culture Rhetoric.

Truthfully, I couldn't afford it anyway. The car will be released later this year but I'm not in a position to keep doing the hypers game, it gets very expensive, very fast
I think what your saying is ferrari makes their loyal clients buy the Roma to get access to the upcoming hypers?
You need more to get an allocation for the F250 hypercar.

I think Ferrari like to have you as a customer because you actually drive these cars to their full extent, rather than them being hidden away in collections. I know people spend their money how they wish but Ferraris are surely meant to be driven like they are stolen. i.e., fast.

I think Tim fits their portfolio of what Ferrari wants from client. No aftermarket tampering, slammed or widebody kits. Car remains 100% factory spec and paint will always be like new because PPF❤

Tim, I love it that you are starting to collect Ferraris and it's so exciting to watch you experience the ownership of them, but please, please spec the colors other than blue! I mean your Shumuseum is about having full palat full of colorful cars and it just seem that the entire collection is starting to lean toward color blue..

Good for you Shmee enjoy. Two month ago I had my first Ferrari in the Portofino and I just ordered the Purosangue I hope you are enjoying yours. I now have the DBX 707 in addition to the Portofino which I love but it takes two years for the Purosangue so I have time to enjoy it:). I never knew how good Ferrari is until I drove one not to take away from anyone else. Thanks for sharing.

i totally agree with you tim. it will become the future timeless Ferrari of today with that long hood, gt body. it's an oddball out of the current lineup but the beauty of the Roma grows on you as time goes on.

Stunning car, in a terrfic color. It's like having a 250 GT Spider in 1962. Going everywhere, cruising the Veneto, powering through the Apennines, and coming up the PCH for dinner in Malibu or out Palm Springs. Old school works: luggage capacity, road clearance, soft top, got it all, with today's power braking and handling. (and you save 16 million over that '62 250!) Your reasoning for spec is spot on. Leave the goofy cosmetic packages for the Cigar Afficionado/Rob report crowd. And Congrats! You might be surprised, you might keep it for much longer than you think, a little patina on a well maintained car is quite lovely.

The Ferrari Roma somehow reminds me of the classic Ferraris. The well-known coupés from the 1960s. It's incredibly elegant to look at, and I really like that. I can not wait to see the Roma join your fleet in the near future!
Same here. Reminds me of a new approach to the Dayton from 68 to 73. If Sunny Crocket had a Ferrari now it would be a Roma Spider.
You say you would be going with blue again. Well, I believe it could be a somewhat lighter shade considering the fact it matches the ethos of Vantage Roadster, is an ode to your first sportscar and all other Ferraris in your collection adorn darker shade!
Beautiful car. If you can afford in your collection, then it's indeed a great option because it's different than the rest. It's a truly modern day GT with clean swift classic lines.

@@hakonvilvangI believe the next one he is spec’ing is the SF90XX. He has already spoken to the fact that if he were to get an 812 it would in the aftermarket as they are already sold and out of production in anticipation for the successor.

When you also consider Tim has worked hard to produce endless videos to be in a position to buy rhings like the GT, SF90, Senna & Zenvo he can start getting into the more special cars so it does make sense for him to follow this path with Ferrari and he gets to spec and own the cars which he can continue to gain revenue from making videos about these very things whilst working his way to the special products its literally a no brainer win win situation for him which differs to other owners not in the industry!
Brilliant video as always Tim,been a viewer of the channel for around 4/5 years now and the content keeps getting better! The Roma in that colour is beautiful😍…ignore all the negativity and arrogant comments!..probably only jealous viewers wishing there where in the position you are in!..so be it if bring content to the channel that Surrounds brands that you tend to own or like! I think regardless of what some may think of your reasons for buying this it is quite the privilidge to do so .. i dont think your also hiding the fact that you do need to buy other cars from the product to get the special cars but its the honest fun that i think is the true reason we all follow each youtubers story.
Well, Tim, you are going to have quite a garage of Ferrari's soon! When you did the first initial walk about for the Roma I wasn't really taken by its looks..But, now, the spyder version I am really liking the design lines! Especially the bonnet(see, some of us Americans CAN banter around some British terms!) 'chin' line and the tail lights.

I would say the Roma is one of some cars that does not need carbon visual components to make it look good or sportier. its like an art on wheels and would always look better on chrome/silver accents. I would prefer a Grigio alloy or blu Roma over silver accents.(if I had that kind of money😂😂)

I think the Roma is lovely. The 812 is probably my favorite Ferrari (also the GT4CL), but I'm guessing it's not a "daily Ferrari". The GTB also has my interest bc I like it's GT-like aesthetic, but I probably favor front engine.

Please go with Azzuro California, it would suit the curvy lines of this car super well. It’ll also pay homage to your OG Shmeemobile convertible, the vantage roadster.

Huge fan of the Ferrari Roma, not least because it looks like if Ferrari made an F-Type, which is one of the most beautiful cars on the road, but it's what I'd want a Ferrari to be, a fast, elegant GT car. It's the prettiest car they currently make and definitely the one I would buy. That pale blue is gorgeous!

I find the point about soft-tops quite interesting. Of course this soft-top replaced the Portofino hard-top, the new BMW 4-series returned to a soft-top, the new Mercedes SL did too. I wonder if we’re gonna see more of that as time goes on?

@@petegeorge6605 I disagree. A good soft top is classy. A folding hard top often looks tacky.
On your rant about the "safty systems" it´s so annoying i would not get a new car right now, rather have a 2 year old one without it. Another point to consider is that the first few meters people drive they are not focused on the road, but rather try to turn everything of, or when they try to turn it off when it does not work right.
I think the tricky thing to do is balance the reasoning. Buying a car to open opportunities for access to other cars in the future and then making deliberate choices about model and specification of the “entry-level” car, versus choosing an entry-level car and its specification and, oh, just so happens this helps open doors for future more exclusive models. How this is explained is the tricky bit.

You are sooo right. I won’t buy a car past 2016 or so bc of all the safety lane keep, proximity sensor, speed limit sensors, etc. They’ve replaced pops and bangs with pings and beeps 🤦♂️
Hi Tim. I think at the end of the day, yes Ferrari do push end users to buy lower end cars so that you can have an allocation for a special edition, but to call the Roma a lower end car is crazy!!! It’s a Ferrari!

This colour is amazing on this car. I feel like the Roma needs to be a light metallic colour... the pastels seem right for a car that belongs on the French Riviera or similar.
Stunning car. The tablet is kind of a miss for me. It doesn’t seem integrated into the rest of the dash and if it’s truly intended to be a daily (which I think it could be) maybe some more traditional controls would be better.
Ferrari Roma definitely sounds better than Scuderia Ecosse’s Ferrari Dundee.
Not jealous of you at all Tim honestly. I’ll never even see most of these cars in real life never mind own or even sit in any. Up where I am in Scotland there’s not exactly many supercars going around.

Tim if you can stomach the losses on the SF90, and the 296 for the hopeful upsides on the others then the model works. Of course the Shmee Ferrari budget could fund a LOT of other things. Time will tell

I actually like the Roma very much, except for the front grill. That looks like an alibi grill for an electric vehicle.
And yes, the constant EU overreach by uninvolved bodies, who don’t even know, or have anything to do with what they regulate, will at the end destroy a lot. Including manufacturers.

I’m with you Tim. It is still a Ferrari and most of the folks complaining about it will never grace the seat of one much less own one. I personally like the Roma and think it is a very understated, below the radar car. What people cannot fathom is how much attention cars like a Ferrari get from people, and I think the Roma is one that you can drive without all of the attention. I just own an Alfa Stelvio and people start discussions with me about it all of the time.
Gosh why so much negativity in the comments it’s unbelievable how many people try to tell Shmee what to do , it’s his life if you don’t like the car he bought don’t watch the video . This car looks beautiful....i don't really like the looks of the newer Ferrari's as they don't really look that elegant as the old Ferrari's looked (288 GTO my all time favourite) but this one looks absolutely stunning....the sound is perfect for a GT car and doesn't make you deaf like the SF 90....and the open top experience will be amazing in this car....

The thing is, I prefer the portofino over this, but if given the choice over the coupe roma and this I would take the convertible. That being said, the new 296 and aston martin vantage , even the purple McLaren see will get forgotten. I mean the 296 is also a convertible too. Seems a bit redundant for the collection to me.
